over/under on the number of times the word grind is used?
His stats are as good as Fields -- that's the sad thing
the fit wasn't good enough even though kw is sure swish will have a bounceback season next year.
I SHOULD HAVE FOLLOWED LARRY’S ADVICE!

You should cut up…not across.

what i learned.
swisher is great and will be great for the yankees but is not good enough for the white sox.
marquez has the kind of sink that made garland such a success.
nunez throws harder than swisher.
betemit will push fields to start at third, but will likely be the super sub.
uribe will have to eat his way out of some other organization.
swisher fucked freddy garcia’s wife and by extension fucked ozzie and was therefore traded.
"too many ob-gyns aren't able to practice their love with women all across this country."
my logic was twisted on the whole fucking on the side thing
thanks for setting it straight

Anyone know why Marquez didn't pitch from '05 to '06?

there we go
thanks! Not that his numbers are much better. Also for what it’s worth Gonzalez said Marquez had a lat injury for most of this year

Thanks
I’m not much for the offseason, but this trade stunk enough to disturb my peaceful baseball-free slumber.
I think Keith Law sums it up best:
The White Sox gave up Gio Gonzalez, Faustino de los Santos, Ryan Sweeney and $3.5 million, and their return is one year of Swisher plus Betemit, Marquez and Nunez. That’s an impressive run of trading down in value.
It was a good season.
Didn't Law like the original Swisher deal? I think so -- so the jackass is contradicting himself to pile on here
It’s unnecessary. This Marquez debacle is bad enough that no badness need be added to it.

RE:
He liked the Swisher deal, as a deal for a moderately priced decent outfielder. Not one year of said outfielder and one utility player and two fringe players.
Did Williams ever say he had one goal this offseason: to acquire a player “like” Wilson Betemit?
He said "run of trading down in value"
Implying that KW has twice traded down in value. Which contradicts his previous opinion about the deal with the A’s.
by hitlesswonder on Nov 13, 2008 11:03 PM CST up reply actions
This reminds me of the Ritchie trade...
The similarity is that Williams identified an unheralded player that he thinks is primed to break out big. Which is fine, or great even, if little is given up for the unheralded player. But KW gives up value for the unheralded player that’s way out of line. He trades like the guy has already broken out or is a sure thing. Swisher should net a Jon Garland in return, not some #19 Yankee prospect who profiles like Garland and did well in the AFL….
Anyway, I’ll sit back and await the trade of Vazquez for Luis Castillo
yeah not much else you can say
nothing would surprise me at this point

shit, i wasn't paying attention at all...
Cliff Lee wins AL Cy Young in landslide.
"this is your life and it's ending one minute at a time."
When Cleveland wrote in the "Cy Young" incentive into Lee's contract
I imagine an unnaturally short man with a top hat and outlandish sideburns scrawling on a piece of paper with a quill, thinking to himself, “This’ll shut em’ the fuck up.”

don't let Lee's Cy Young get near it.
It might break Q’s hand in reaction.

This is a HR (human Resouces) trade (my spin on it)
Swish probably did the blow up dolls – embarassed JR (goes against what he tries to promote)
Like I said in an earlier thread – doesn’t bother me – what value did he bring in 08 that can’t be replaced, especially without Toby to be there for the pies. Whatever the case, something wasn’t working and KW made a change.

nothing gets ‘em wetter than infrequent postings on the city’s second favorite team
And the hits just keep on coming
The Swisher trade worked only for the first two weeks of the regular season and when he filled in at first base when Paul Konerko was on the disabled list because of a ribcage strain in late June.
I’m starting to get the feeling that we’re in Invasion of the Body Snatchers or something. Everyone keeps trying to say what a necessary trade this was and yet the Sox are contending for a championship next year. I wish someone would ask KW ‘are you rebuilding?’ Because to me and the majority of us, it certainly looks like it. One week after saying KW would prefer an OBP guy to a speed demon who can’t get on base, they’re talking about Owens again. Did 2008 happen or did we all just imagine it?

I think the rationale for the Swisher trade is summed up by this BTF comment:
This looks like a panicky ‘oh no I’m on the hook for another $27 million for a .219 hitter’ salary dump to me on the White Sox’ part./blockquote>
The Sox have to think Swisher is going to suck from here on out. There’s no other explanation
Some early predictions based on this trade:
1) Vazquez gets dumped and the rotation includes both Richard and Marquez at the start of 2009. Notice that Williams said Cooper will help Marquez — they’re planning on him being in the bigs.
2) The Sox get a “true leadoff man” in CF. Right now, I think it will be Jerry Owens. I expect the return from the Vazquez trade to be something like Parnell or Kunz.
3) Betemit will be the Sox starting 3B in 2009
4) ??
5) Profit

I just don't buy that at all.
Maybe the physical will reveal something?
nothing gets ‘em wetter than infrequent postings on the city’s second favorite team
It's a confusing trade, but I see no other explanation
I don’t think Swisher is damaged goods (ie that a physical will show problems). I doubt KW wants to piss off Cashman and exacerbate his rep for dealing hurt players.
It is possible the Sox think Swisher will be good again, I suppose, but just decided they needed to move one of Swish/JD/Thome/PK NOW and had no choice but to accept the package a .219 hitter will bring. But if they thought Swisher would be good, why not trade JD? He could fetch a fringe AAA pitcher and crappy utilityman you would think.
So, I really think the Sox must have decided Swisher will suck, and anything they get back is worth getting out from under paying Swisher the remainder of his contract. Having read about Marquez now…I don’t see how anyone could make him the centerpiece of a serious trade. This had to be a salary dump and rumor-fodder the people who are waiting to mention PEDs….
by hitlesswonder on Nov 14, 2008 12:40 AM CST up reply actions
I have a hard time believing that
It could very well be true, but I would have thought that KW would not decide to give Swisher away just because he didn’t like him. That would be really, really incompetent.
by hitlesswonder on Nov 14, 2008 12:56 AM CST up reply actions
you seem pretty confident about this, cheat, and i'll concede that it's one passable explanation for what can only be called a puzzling trade.
but i still find it unlikely that kw would sell so low for that reason on what was one of their more valuable assets.
Cashing checks and having sex.
You of all people know "value" is what someone is willing to pay.
The “fleece” here may have been Beane of KW, not Cashman of KW.
Whoosh!
