Weekly Music Thread: Edition Three
WMT's curators prefer not to apply strict scrutiny to the traditional definition of "a week". As such, the third round of these is going up now. This week, it can be iTunes Most Played Lists? The previous computer contained a slightly embarrassing mix of Neutral Milk Hotel, American Football, Death Cab For Cutie and The Shins, a total significantly run up during an obviously lonely freshman year. C'est la vie. The new one, however, looks thus:
1)Animal Collective - Fireworks (18 plays)
2)Bon Iver - Skinny Love (15 plays)
3)Jesus and Mary Chain - Just Like Honey (11 plays)
4)Mazzy Star - Fade Into You (11 plays)
5)The Shins - The Past and Pending (11 plays)
6)Chris Knox - Not Given Lightly (9 plays)
7)The Kinks - Picture Book (9 plays)
8)Everybody's Down - No Age (9 plays)
9)Of Monteal - Heimdalsgate Like A Promethean Curse (9 plays)
10)Of Montreal - Gronlandic Edit (9 plays)
11)Slowdive - Alison (9 plays)
12)Blondie - Hanging On The Telephone (8 plays)
13)Galaxie 500 - Blue Thunder (8 plays)
14)Magnetic Fields - Sweet Lovin' Man (8 plays)
15)Of Montreal - Cato As A Pun (8 plays)
16)Talking Heads - Psycho Killer (8 plays)
17)Black Rebel Motorcycle Gang - Fault Line (7 plays)
18)The Kinks - Do You Remember Walter (7 plays)
19)m83 - Kim and Jessie (7 plays)
20)Magnetic Fields - Nothing Matters When We're Dancing (7 plays)
21)Michael Jackson - Thriller (7 plays)
22)Michael Jackson - Beat It (7 plays)
23)Of Montreal - Suffer For Fashion (7 plays)
24)T. Rex - Jeepster (7 plays)
25)Yo La Tengo - Little Eyes (7 plays)
I'm not sure what this says about me, other than I'm in college and white. I already knew that, I think...Anyone else care to offer themselves up for slaughter? And of course, feel free to throw out stuff in general that's caught your ears lately, either in list form or even some files/links. And I know it's mostly an exercise in futility, but links to good music writing is always welcome. Obviously, the usual bitching, moaning, of Kevin Barnes fun making and assorted assholery is encouraged. Also: it turns out that Chris Getz doesn't really give that much thought to his entrance music. I told him it was up to him to raise the standard, though. So here's hoping.

which i like. right before the old computer died, i went on a new zealand binge, but i never got super familiar with the stuff, so i’m kind of picking up the pieces.

This guy is hysterical. From Wiki:
In 1987, “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan and Khosrow were pulled over by New Jersey police after a WWF event, suspecting Duggan of DUI. After a search of the vehicle and the persons, police discovered that Duggan was under the influence of marijuana and alcohol, while the Sheik was high on cocaine. Small amounts of cocaine were also found in the vehicle. Duggan received a conditional release while the Sheik was placed on probation for a year. The mini-scandal that erupted after two in-ring enemies were found drinking and doing drugs together led to the end of the angle, the Sheik’s release, and Duggan’s temporary departure from WWE.

I burned a cd that fit both of this albums in their entirety
Its gotten play just about every day over the last vaguely defined week:
MGMT – Ocular Spectacular
Parliament – The Mothership Connection
about the only other cd that has gotten any play this ‘week’ is the Black Keys, the new album plus assorted old stuff to fill the disc.
In between NPR, WXRT, the Score, and the occassional 106.3 commercials, i go to the cds

So what do people think of the Led Zeppelin reunion rumor
with myles kennedy of alter bridge??
Personally I think everyone will hate it. I love Led Zep and don’t know how you can’t have Plant on stage in girl pants.
However I think Alter Bridge is awesome and Myles Kennedy has great range. He sings in a similar vocal range that Plant did 30 years ago, but the tone isn’t right.
When they were at my school they did a cover of Rock N’ Roll and I didn’t like it. 3 years later he might be their new singer. Crazy

Maybe I shouldn't have said "always"
But their performances varied so wildly in quality that I don’t think they were, overall, a good live band. Page is/was sloppy live, and Bonham’s solos could be pretty boring — and I’m a drummer.
I don’t think the BBC sessions count because they were working within constraints, which helped them.

not to mention the sharks…
But they were one of the greatest r&r bands of all time….
Speaking of which:
The Stones
Led Zeppelin

Yardbirds
Pink Floyd
lived in England, and it still amazes me that little island produced some of the best rock n roll of all time, thanks to Robert Johnson.

I think a Zep reunion is the worst idea in the history of music..even if they had Paige, Plant and Jones on board.
In ’80, when Bonham died, they purposely did not replace him and keep going with the band.
I have always really appreciated that about them – how many bands do you see in some form today, that only have one or two original members? (Shit, even Blind Melon has recently regrouped without Hoon (obvs)…and seriously, how the hell do you call yourself by the same name if you don’t have the lead effing singer???)
But seeing Zep today is not the same as the Zep of the late-60’s and 70’s.
And if you are going to mess with the original pieces, why even bother?
Do what the Black Crowes did around 2000 or so….they toured with Paige and covered a bunch of Zep songs on that tour. That would be better in my opinion, than throwing a random lead singer/drummer into the mix and calling it a “reunion.”

Yeah, if there was a God no 60+-year-old would be singing “Satisfaction”, but goodamn it, “Sympathy for the Devil” was THE best song ever written. And I will fight to the death on that one. THE best. And they still do it proud.

Yes and no. Though they did cover some BTO. And given that it was the week after 9/11, we pretty much all held hands and swayed to "Share the Land." ahhhh...my young(er) hippie days.
Was the Chicago Marathon in the Rosemont Theatre? That’s wild! And boring, I presume.

I'm not going to do most played because most of my music is on my desktop at the permanent home. As such, I'll do a shuffle and post the top 20 songs, hoping the embarrassing songs don't come up.
And away we go!
Last Night – The Strokes
Call it a Day – The Raconteurs
Mrs Robinson – Simon and Garfunkel
Bring the Pain – Method Man
Help – The Beatles
The People – Common
What if You Were Right First Time? – Arctic Monkeys
People Everyday – Arrested Development
Don’t Do Me Like That – Tom Petty
Runnin’ Down a Dream – Tom Petty
The Organ Grinder – Murder by Death
I Ain’t No Joke – Erik B and Rakim
You Don’t Know Me – T.I.
The One – Foo Fighters
I Wonder – Kanye West
Tobacco Island – Flogging Molly
Bankhead – T.I.
Don’t Tell Me To Do the Math(s) – Los Campesinos
The Devil Drives – Murder by Death
All I Need – Radiohead
Hmm… so Common is still on my iPod. I had a phase where I really liked his stuff about a year-and-a-half ago, but I don’t remember the last time I listened to a song of his in full. I really ought to delete some of the not-listened-to songs.

it’s a thursday night, and incidentally my first week of student teaching

but i wouldn’t be opposed to making the 3 1/2 hour drive right after school, going to the show, going home to arlington heights to catch a few hours of sleep, then driving back REALLY early in the morning.
that would suck, but i have a feeling it’d be worth it.

probably pretty fucking high
these are the only three u.s. dates in the brief merriweather post pavilion tour, and i know there aren’t any announced future tours… but that could change pretty easily, i guess.
i’m really hoping they’re going to do a major u.s. tour over the summer, or at least play some festivals (crossing my fingers for them to come back to pitchfork next summer, and if not then lollapalooza). i missed them at pitchfork this past summer — shitty summer job scheduling conflict.

also, speaking of neutral milk hotel
the bar i went to on halloween had five cover bands, and the last one played the entire “in the aeroplane over the sea” album. it was pretty cool. the four bands before them were (in order): the replacements, the white stripes, blondie, and a david bowie band of guys all dressed up like different bowies.

unfortunately the order was fucked
the white stripes (two dudes dressed and jack and meg… “meg” had fake boobs on, it was awesome) rocked, but they were too early in the night. by the time the bar was packed and everyone was drunk and ready to move, then came NMH to calm them down, save for about 90 seconds of king of carrot flowers pt 3.
but, when you have about 3 staff members of the bar in the NMH cover band, of course they’re going to go last.
and that album is a hipster classic.

Actually
I stated these are my 5 star rated songs. And if you take a close look they are in alphabetical order…..so the SuperBowl Shuffle is rated 5 stars and comes in 8th alphabetically.
Plus I really don’t listen to the radio for music. Only the Score. These just happen to be my favorite songs. I haven’t listened to B96 in like 10 years probably. I don’t even know what 101.1 is, though I may have to check it out if they play these songs…… the loop I will occasionally put on if Boers and Bernstien are annoying me.

I have no idea.
I like music…..but usually I will just hear a song I like and then download it….or in the case of many of my favorites, buy the CD (remember those). I do like a lot of Motley Crue- including their new album which is actually quite good. I also like a lot of west coast rap…Ice Cube, Dre, Eazy, 2 Pac…… love Biggie, Phil Collins, Guns N Roses… Really don’t listen to anything new that comes out. You will all understand when you get a few years older.

Jeez
Every time I read these threads I feel older.
With that being said, this Friday I’ll be playing with my old band on campus for the first time in two years and then Saturday I
I’ll be at the Chicago Theater to see the Pumpkins. They may be past their prime and a shell of the band that was, but dammit, I’m gonna enjoy every second of it.
As for what I’m listening to as of late the new Oasis and the last Kings of Leon album have dominated my various music players for a little while now. The lady has me slowly getting into Lupe Fiasco and I’m getting her into some Coltrane and Cannonball. That about sums it up.

I saw the Pumpkins at the Horseshoe Casino over the summer
we had mezzanine seats, so it wasn’t the full experience.
I won’t say much, just that the lighting and production was incredible (though that had a lot to do with the venue — it was the second ever concert there, so it was brand-fucking-new) and the second half of the show was pretty lackluster. Then again, this may have had to do with the venue and our seats. Sitting down for the Smashing Pumpkins kind of sucks (cheap, last minute tickets that someone was getting rid of), and the venue was pretty impersonal.
The first half of the show was fucking great, though. I hope they’re better this time.

I saw BB at the Chicago Blues Festival last summer
He wasn’t worth waiting for. Based on how often he broke up his songs to chat with the audience, this must’ve been his set list:
1. Thank you, Chicago
2. It’s wonderful to be here.
3. Thank you
4. It’s great to play for you.
etc.
He alternated 45 seconds of music with a minute of chatter that was pretty much inaudible over the lawn. Hopefully a smaller venue treats everybody better.

Saw William Elliot Whitmore last night -- fucking awesome.
he put on a great show with Murder by Death. If you like folky/bluegrassy (I think this qualifies) type shit, give Whitmore a listen.

Anyone hear the new Los Campesinos album?
They had some neat sounds on their first album — I’m not necessarily a huge fan of theirs but there were some songs I liked on Hello There Youngster. The new album is apparently only about a half-hour long so fitting it in this weekend probably won’t be a problem (not that anyone really cares).

Just to clarify
the “not that anyone really cares” comment was associated with my fitting it into my weekend plans, not the post as a whole. You guys don’t have to reassure me — I know everything I write is fucking golden*.
*I cannot be held liable for any of my writing that is not, in fact, golden. Or “fucking golden”, for that matter.

in terms of song for song excellence
i probably would’ve agreed with you up until ‘dear science.’ ‘blind’ alone is better than a lot of albums. but it’s easier to sustain brilliance over a 5 song EP than it is an entire album. have you spent much quality time with ‘dear science’? if not, i’d recommend doing so. pretty amazing record.
on an unrelated note, i can’t stop listening to bon iver. tremendous.

Return is a great great album too.
I mean “Wash the Day” might be the best song on the album, but it’s the last track. It’s a completely compelling and interesting album with some sweet grooves. As for DS: I’ve been rocking it all weekend. TVotR might be the best American band around right now.

start from the beginning
because their sound evolved over time. if you like the fall, then you will definitely like slanted and enchanted.
actually, if you wanna be a hardcore mofo, then you should really start with westing (by musket & sextant), which is a compilation of early singles on drag city. it’s not too shabby.

i started with crooked rain
and it’s definitely the most accesible of their albums. after CRCR, it took me a little while to get into slanted & enchanted, but i ended up liking it better in the long run. i’m also of the opinion that wowee zowee is severely underappreciated. the watery, domestic EP would also be a solid starting point.
