difference is Manny may not always be on board but will produce anyways. Imagine his bat protecting Q was great last year with really not having much protection with Thome and Konerko slumping all year. You are right though… they don’t deal with Boras but stranger things have happened. For instance, trading our best pitching prospect at the time for a guy we knew nothing about and a guy who sucked but netted us Griffey at the trading deadline.

we need middle infielders.
I have never seen a team so poor at handling ground balls or making accurate throws to first base. We lost our first 3 games by 1 run and only got mopped up once… we ended up like 4-8. I think in the end we lost maybe 5 games by 1 run and mostly because of fielding gaffes in the 7th inning when we had the lead.

Major league baseball’s award season is more drawn out than Game 5 of the World Series. With the MVP awards finally being handed down Monday and Tuesday, here’s a look at some of the worst MVPs. One thing is clear: Old-school baseball writers loved scrappy middle infielders.
1Marty Marion, 1944 NL MVP: The St. Louis Cardinals’ shortstop was one of the top defensive players in the game, but he hit .267 with six home runs and one stolen base that season. He barely had a better offensive season than AL winner Hal Newhouser — a pitcher. The Cardinals ran away with the pennant, but how about Stan Musial? A .347 season with 51 doubles, 14 triples and 12 home runs seems pretty valuable.
2Roger Peckinpaugh, 1925 AL MVP: OK, home runs weren’t flying out of the park unless you were named Babe Ruth or Rogers Hornsby, but would it be too much to ask for a few doubles from an MVP? Peckinpaugh, a 34-year-old shortstop, batted .294 and hit four home runs and only 14 doubles for the Washington Senators. He didn’t finish in the top 10 in the league in any offensive category. It apparently made him more valuable than teammate Goose Goslin, who hit .334 with 18 homers, 34 doubles, 20 triples and 113 RBI.
3Dick Groat, 1960 NL MVP: The Pittsburgh Pirates’ shortstop hit two home runs. He did win the batting title by leading the league in singles, which, of course, is the most valuable play in baseball. He also never stole a base — a no-no for scrappy middle infielders — and drove in only 50 runs.

dick has an interesting history
Groat was signed by Pirates general manager Branch Rickey just days after graduating from Duke, where he had been a 2-time All-American in basketball. Interestingly enough, he did not play baseball at Duke. Both the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Giants were also interested in him, but he had always hoped to play for the Pirates after growing up a few miles away from Forbes Field. He broke in with the Pirates in June, never playing in the minor leagues, and batted .284 over the rest of the year. Afterwards, he pursued his basketball career before serving two years in the Army. He led Fort Belvoir teams to worldwide Army championships in both sports, the first time a single base had won both titles in the same year, hitting .362 in baseball and averaging 35 points per game in basketball.
Returning to the Pirates in 1955.

closer a was far superior to closer b. so why did closer a receive three third-place votes in the al cy young voting while the other garnered 7 second- and 11 third-place votes? likely because closer a, mariano rivera, ended up with only 39 saves (in 40 opportunities) while closer b, francisco rodriguez, broke the saves record with 62 (in 29 more opportunities). this is just another example of how inane the bbwaa voting is. additionally, rodriguez’s saves record-breaking season has had the effect of overshadowing one of what is likely the best seasons a relief pitcher has ever had.

because the save is a worthless stat.
Didn’t the agents come up with the stat to get their guys paid? I am kind of in the boat when it comes to using your “closer” in the most high leverage situation. I mean what does a save really mean? Frankie was opportunistic to be on a team who, when winning, was not winning by more than 3 runs more often than not. I think the peripheral stats are the most important stat when evaluating relief pitchers. JMO
