In his defense
Ours looked like this
1. Fautino De Los Santos 147 2. Gio Gonzalez 144 3. Jack Egbert 109 4. Chris Carter 105 5. Ryan Sweeney 101 6. Aaron Poreda 78 7. John Shelby 63 8. Lance Broadway 55 9. Jose Martinez 49
after the trades, Egbert as #1 isn’t exactly inspiring.

and it's not like the risers (Allen and Richard)
deserved to be listed last year.
Allen’s always had the tools, but didn’t look like he’d be able to put them together. And Richard had a good pitching body, and a fine athletic pedigree, but zero inspiring results.
AIM: SouthSideCheat
i'd call that a legitimate list.
except, of course, for the idiotic “i hate aaron poreda because he’s not rick porcello and carlos gomez told me to” crew that skewed the voting.

Usually a few relievers and a few mid-level players
get picked off the board in the first hours or days of Free Agency. But nothin was happening this year
(I suppose because FA signing period started on a friday, they (functionally) extended it 3 days.)

More focused on trades, perhaps?

we can’t allow the FA market to seize up. it’s become too large for us to let it fial. that’s why as part of our next stimulus package, we need to authorize the fine gentlemen of the treasury department to buy up all of these bad FA contracts on the books so that GMs and owners have the ability to keep day-to-day operations going and handing out retarded contracts.

White Sox claim pitcher from Toronto
By Mark Gonzales
The White Sox claimed right-handed pitcher Kelvim Jimenez off waivers from Toronto and placed him on the 40-man roster.
Jimenez, 28, spent the 2008 season in the Cardinals organization, posting a 1-6 record and 2.92 ERA with 12 saves in 46 games at Triple-A Memphis. He had a 5.63 ERA in 15 games with St. Louis.
The Blue Jays claimed Jimenez off waivers on Nov. 3. Jimenez has 617 strikeouts in 728 innings in nine minor league seasons.
….
The Sox should know no later than Tuesday whether bench coach Joey Cora will be hired as Seattle’s next manager. By Cora’s recent comments in Seattle newspapers regarding the position and the Mariners’ future, he sounds optimistic about his chances.
Cora has ample knowledge of the Mariners’ player personnel, but it remains to be seen which direction new GM Jack Zduriencik will steer toward.

I remember. Boring as hell.
I mean given what has happened. I’m asking for kind of a combination what you think Kenny should be attempting knowing his needs and his tendencies. As I remember, yours was kind of a stand pat plan along the lines of what Jerry Royster might submit. I’m not necessarily saying that’s a bad move….but just not even close to the way Kenny will procede. For that matter….probably not what would make for any excitement, either== attendance/$.
in the current economic climate
a stand pat plan may be one of the best non-moves you can make.
number one when it mattered!
I’ve seen a lot of positives views on the deal. Doesn’t change my opinion we got garbage for a valuable asset.
by Grinder in Training on Nov 17, 2008 3:02 PM CST up reply actions
what I can't understand about is
why move so fast (on Swisher)? If they wanted him out fine, but surely they could have waited to see what other teams may have offered.
Or maybe Williams just couldn’t wait to get rid of him because of other reasons, but all that kind of stuff is speculation. All we have to go on is his numbers and they say he was undersold.
number one when it mattered!
That is a fear of mine with Kenny.....and the first thing I thought of when I heard the deal.
Even so, if those are the driving forces, it doesn’t necessarily mean it will TURN OUT bad….he deserves some benefit of the doubt given recent history.
i knew that when i watched him try to hit big league pitching.

Yeah.
I’m with you. Ever since being mocked in Moneyball, he has been completely driven to either shove it down Billy’s throat and/or prove to the world he’s just as good. Funny. Both are likely egomaniacs…..but I don’t care. Maybe that’s not so terrible. How’s this….as long as Kenny is honest with himself that these are the dynamics in place….then at least he won’t allow that fact to affect his rationale for any specific move…yet not denying what is truly happening psychologically. Damn….I think the Sox should hire me as a psychological consultant….will you put in a good word for me, lar?
I hope not.

I"m still going with financial
This move eliminates not only Swisher’s salary, but also the need to consider bringing Juan back. So in a sense – KW just cleared the books of a fairly large financial burden. For that matter, I expect KW to not sign any free agents this year, expect to see Armstrong as the backup catcher and a couple other minor league players making an appearence.
Part of my thought is based on a survey the Sox sent to season ticket holders before the end of the season – there were quite a few questions regarding the economy and its impact on spending with the team. There were also questions regarding how the fans would like to see a team structured and assembled.
Don't look back because we are going forward!
I don't see Armstrong as a backup
Two lefty-hitting catchers?

ok get it now
do you you think that will be Betemit’s role, a utility man, filling in in numerous positions or the starting third baseman? (bearing in mind that KW was bigging up Josh Fields only a couple of weeks ago).
number one when it mattered!
A Fields/Betemit platoon
seems to be our best option for optimizing the offensive production at 3rd (working only with parts we have now)
makes it more unlikely that they
will sign that Cuban lad then I guess, well not for loads of cash anyway.

i can't remember the last teenager to compete successfully in the big leagues

i posted my own "larry plan" re: starters
1)Danks
2)Buerhle
3)Vazquez
4)Gavin
5)The Unit/Richard/Poreda
That kind of depth projects to do what every Kenny team since the 5th Starter Debacle has done: get more IP from non-replacement level starters than anyone else in the league. Richard would be swingman/long/loogy in that scenario while Poreda could move at his leisure. If Vazquez gets dealt for a CF as may be the case, such a signing makes all the more sense. FWIW, Getz really likes Richard to stick as a decent starter. But then again he was in Clayton’s wedding.

Further, when the DBacks were in their first season, the local media thought it necessary to make sure they explained the rules of the game to the audience on the TV during games. No sht.
