.294/.403/.503 in 2007-2008 says deluca
Viciedo most recently played for Villa Clara in the Cuban league before he defected in late May. During the 2007-08 season, he hit .294 (52-for-177) with 10 home runs, 38 RBI, a .403 on-base percentage and a .503 slugging percentage. In four seasons in Cuba’s top league, Viciedo hit .287 (300-for-1,045) with 36 home runs and 162 RBI in 327 games.
He can play third base, first base, shortstop and used to be a pitcher with a 90 mph fastball.
The Sox see only a third baseman for now.

That's pretty impressive
Cuban baseball is something similar to high-A, right? A teenager OPSing .900 against guys much older is rather impressive. Color me cautiously optimistic — this has taken part of the bitter taste of the Swisher trade out of my mouth.

Is there a Cuban baseball primer around? Probably not, right?
or is it on the person (in this case, me) to go about and collect various bits of info. And by primer, I mean stuff like league averages (i.e. what does a .300/.400/.500 line mean in the Cuban league) and average age (among other things).

It's VERY offense friendly
If we’re gonna compare it to A-ball, think California League, with lots of hit batters thrown in for good measure.

Furthering the comparison
Boston’s top position prospect, Lars Anderson hit .317/.408/.513 in the CAL league this year at age 20.

clay davenport did a comparison of the cuban league a few years ago.
basically said it was comparable to the new york penn league. if you’re a bp subscriber, it’s easily found.
it's gonna be sweet with wise starting in center.

Depending on how Viciedo and Ramirez progress from here
this comparison could seem less apt.

no. quality of competition. two players amongst hundreds aren't going to change that.

well
maybe that is the case as a whole….. but the Cuban stars who have come to the US have been pretty good…. Orlando Hernandez, Jose Contreras, Livan Hernandez have all had good careers. Alexei Ramirez was 2nd in the rookie of the year voting. Yuniesky Betencourt has been good for the mariners. I am not sure how many have defected and busted…but most of the guys I have heard defected have been pretty good.

Having a NYP team in town
I’d like to think that’s understating the quality of the Cuban league. I’d really, really like to think that.

Ken Rosenthal comes up with a few possible suitors for Mike Lowell if the Red Sox sign Mark Teixeira. He lists the Dodgers, White Sox, Tigers and Brewers as possible fits.

btw
Viciedo turns 20 on March 10. He will get a five-year, $11 million contract — a better deal than the Sox gave fellow Cuban Alexei Ramirez, who got a four-year, $4.75million deal last December.
http://www.suntimes.com/sports/deluca/1291817,CST-SPT-deluca21.article
The four-year deal — worth $11 million, a club source told ESPNdeportes.com — is expected to become official as soon as Viciedo clears a physical examination.

and phil rogers says $10 million
The ’05 World Series champions have reached an agreement to sign 19-year-old power hitter Dayan Viciedo to a major-league contract worth $10 million, according to sources. Agent Jaime Torres confirmed the deal, but the official announcement is on hold until Viciedo, a third baseman who also played right field during a tryout earlier this week in the Dominican Republic, completes a physical.

A scout with another team told the Tribune that Viciedo is worth a “very high” first-round pick because of his hitting ability.
Because he’s capable of playing right field and third base, Viciedo gives the Sox some options. Williams has been shopping veteran right fielder Jermaine Dye this winter, possibly with the idea of moving Carlos Quentin from left field to right field.

keep the pipeline flowing kenny!
The Sox’s pipeline to Cuba might not stop with Viciedo. Torres also represents left-hander Noel Arguellez and shortstop Jose Iglesias, who defected at the World Junior Championships in Edmonton last summer.
