Weekly Music Thread: 4th Edition - The Music That Makes Us Thankful
I noticed it had been 9 days since Colin's last music post, so I thought I'd swoop in and get a new puppy up. It's Sunday, and a new week is presently materializing while the sun sets on the West Coast, and is gone already in the East.
Most of us will have shortened weeks at work; and the college representation of SSS probably has the entire week off! So I wanted to make this the music thread of gratefulness.
This is my favorite holiday - actually, the only one I really like, I should specify...
So take a moment or seventeen thousand this week, to reflect on all of what fills your own buckets of joy, including having music to fill our ears, senses, days, nights, dreams, and thoughts.
I often wonder how many people go through life, never tapping into talents and abilities simply because the opportunity to do so seems out of reach, or out of resource. I first came to this thought while I was listening to an album in a troubled time...and I considered how my life would be less fulfilled if this artist had never picked up a guitar....or if they never attempted to compose a song...think of all the enrichment wasted, in the lives of so many!
I imagine there are thousands of us who have more capabilities than we'll ever pursue. Thousands more, too poor and never pushed to do things simply because they were born into the wrong environment. Maybe there are great composers among us, who choose to focus their energies on other pursuits...or great athletes who choose to become engineers instead of short-stops...
From this consideration, I want to give a blurb about an album for which I am grateful. And an artist in particular, who has filled my entire life (literally) with guidance, appreciation, clarity, and wisdom. Without him, I would not be who I am.
The 1971 album, "Collaboration," by Shawn Phillips, is a concept album that contains more sagaciousness and coherence than most anything else I have ever heard. Shawn's lyrics are crafted as skillfully as the greatest poet you can recall; his passion evident in every strum of his guitar. And even greater yet, is the band who masterfully accompanies him on this album (and all his albums produced in this era)...each instrument blends together as though they were simply meant to be unified in such harmonies and dissonance alike.
Shawn's roots are in folk. But the evolution of his music is never stagnant nor repetitive - especially his direction in the early 70's. On "Collaboration," he journeys through acoustic storytelling and wondrous questioning; to funky speculation and lyrical tilt-a-whirls; to absolutely bitching climactic jams; to finally "Coming Down Soft and Easy."
I could never select one favorite track from this album, but one in particular has stood out for me recently.
When I was a young teen and going through all the changes and freak-outs of any person at that age, part of my necessary growing was simply accepting and adapting to change. I hated change. (I used to cry when players were traded). I didn't like high school versus my comforts of junior high, for instance. It was around this time that I learned the lesson that everyone and everything is changing, and nothing can remain as is forever (especially, and tragically, not the best stuff). And more importantly, the sheer necessity of change for positive growth, became evident.
That is such a simple concept, but truly so difficult to stomach. Just this past week, in a time where I am facing big, uncertain changes and making tough decisions that impact my future, I put on "Collaboration" to provide perspective. The song "What's Happenin' Jim!" began, and I was quickly returned to the mindset of a 14-year-old me; embarking into high school, surrounded by strangers, and suddenly realizing the smallness of just me; wondering how and where I would fit with my own quirks and influences.
I listened to that song endlessly as a teenager. And still to this day, when I put it on, the words impact me and give me strength while enduring enormously arduous times. That is a superb indication of the lasting power of great music. A decade beyond when I was first starting to understand the weight of what Shawn was writing, and more than two decades beyond when I first began hearing his music, I am still using his wisdom to keep my head straight and help me find my truths.
I know between Chiburb and me, you have heard his name several times on SSS...and maybe you even checked out a track here or there and have gotten scared or turned off because he is not to what you are accustomed...
But if you have to give just one album a try, "Collaboration" is my recommendation. It is so freaking funky and unique...and so utterly captivating in its wisdom. If you have a truthfully open mind towards music and you cannot appreciate the sheer musicianship and craftsmanship of this album, I'm not sure what could impress you.
Anyway, enjoy it if you decide to check it out. And if not, enjoy something wonderful this week! And be eternally grateful that a fraction of those among us with abilities to move masses through their arts, are doing so; working hard, taking risks, venturing out on limbs, and gifting us with their creations and knowledge.
I would love to hear some of the music that you all are grateful for (not simply enjoy...but are grateful for, and incomplete without). Please....appreciate!
Could be a case of velleity
On your part my part
Or anyone who thinks they see
Through a decade an epoch
Or maybe even centuries
What do you think could be your reality?
Does your breath go away
For anything you plainly see?
Talking to God or going on the nod
Or freaking out a fancy free
Take your time in the morning sun
It lasts for half a day
Speak your mind to your only son
If that's what you have to say to him

I was playing some Guitar Hero this weekend
Anyway, the game features Unwritten Law, among countless others, which in turn sent me searching for my old Unwritten Law Music in High Places CD, which I couldn’t find, of course. Acoustic Punk — You’d be surprised the crazy responses you get when you ask someone to guess who’s playing.
So anyway, that’s a CD I lost in the digital crossover. Anyone else wish they could get something back—but probably wont’ buy?

I had my cds swiped from Sea-Tac in 2006. Devastating...I was vacationing and had every album that ever meant anything to me in that case...all my essentials.
In the two years since that happened, I’ve slowly replaced most of them. But I had a Radiohead bootleg from their short 2006 tour, in which they debuted and toyed with all the music that would (a year) later be made into “In Rainbows.”
That concert was absolutely irreplaceable. I hope whoever took my case has a deep appreciation for what they got. But then again, it was probably just sold on the street for $10.

That's something I need to get back to
Piano was the first instrument I played and I enjoyed it. Unfortunately, my teacher was the church pianist and as such I was learning church songs and got bored after a while. He was a good teacher, don’t get me wrong, but playing “Lamb of God” (and boy howdy can I play a mean “Lamb of God”) endlessly got a little tiring.
Is piano tough to ‘relearn’? It’s been a long time since I’ve actually sat and played for more than five minutes…

I think I got back to where I was pretty quickly
Toughest for me was recognizing notes that were octaves higher or lower than the staffs.
Then again, I never was that advanced of a player to begin with. I really didn’t play any four-fingered chords when I was learning, and these songs are rife with them. I’m basically teaching myself as I go along. It’s pretty slow for me, but rewarding.

Lonnie Smith "Live at Club Mozambique"
with Archers of Loaf “The Speed of Cattle” and Miles Davis “Bitches Brew” coming close.
That Lonnie Smith recording blew everything else out of the water (and pretty much still does). The first time I heard it was before “Let’s Go Bowling” came on at a show at the Fireside Bowl. I absolutely love seeing bands live, but there was no point in staying for Let’s Go Bowling because after hearing a few cuts from album, anything else was going to be a disappointment.
Archers of Loaf was a chance find at a rinky dink used cd store in Mong Kok and reminds me of a great time in my life. “Wrong” is such a great track. Bitches Brew just kicks serious ass and has some incredible instrumentation. It opened my mind and steered me in new musical directions.

Was just going through the old hard drive and stumbled upon "Pithecanthropus Erectus" (Mingus)
I forgot how utterly delicious the title track is from that album. Oh yeah, the rest of the album is bitchin’ as well.
Definitely worth putting on every so often and if you don’t already have it, highly recommended. It’s nice to hear that others appreciate Bitches Brew, it gives me hope for the older generation ;)
Let me know how “Live at Club Mozambique” treats you, I may be able to offer some more useful suggestion (although I wouldn’t bank on it…crack is a bitch).
BTW, your above endorsement of “Collaboration” has inspired me to check it out. Well done!

i had rage against the machine “live at the grand olympic auditorium in LA” on my video i-pod.
i had the cd, put it on itunes and in a perfect storm, lost the cd, deleted the itunes and the ipod broke down.
that album used to be one of my go-to morning albums to pump me up on the way to work. good memories, thinking of playing that album while walking towards the fullerton brown line stop. hard to believe that was only a couple years ago. anyhow, the version of “born of a broken man” from that concert made that my favorite ratm song. gets me geeked out just thinking about it.

From the Utne article that Toonder linked in the last music thread...I thought this really fit in with the theme that I touched on in my blurb above:
Artists offer consolation: “It’s like you’ve been cut off from your emotions, and suddenly there’s another person feeling what you want to feel. They’re on the cliff edge with you, and, more than that, they’ve taken their despair and turned it into a beautiful piece of art. It’s inspiring.”

I am thankful for John Coltrane, BB King, and Muddy Waters,
without whom there would be nothing called “Rock and Roll”.
I am thankful for Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Jethro Tull, without whom I might still be listening to my parents’ music from the ’50’s.
I am thankful for early Chicago and Santana, without whom I never would’ve been allowed to play loud music in my home in high school.
I am thankful for “Tea For the Tillerman”, without which I would not have been intimate with Julie Axelrod in high school. (Not the first time I was above my pay grade.)
I am grateful for Pearl Jam, Bush, Collective Soul, Alice and Chains, and Garbage, without whom I would not have immediately bonded with my younger wife (these were in her CD collection the first time I went to her home, and she was impressed I knew her music and was “dark” like her).
I am thankful to all of you for reminding me that each generation has it’s thing and it isn’t supposed to be mine. (And, conversely, mine is not supposed to be yours, except in a historical sense.)

To Jim, before the comment and its indents were deleted:
I haven’t heard the version of The Entertainer of which you speak, but it sounds fabulous.
Separating left and right hands is one of the bigger challenges in learning the instrument, but some songs are far more difficult to coordinate, and require lots of work on each individual hand (and are so much more rewarding when mastered).
The song I posted here (you’re right, I should not have been so weird about the topless thing, but I thought I was alone!) is one of the more challenging that I’ve ever played in terms of left vs right.
In the final section of the song, the right hand bounces around the upper octave, alternating notes exactly one octave apart from each other, in a more playful style.
The left hand, at the same time, plays arpeggios all over the lower octaves; but more fluid and connected. The hands are probably 50 keys apart during this part, and completely separate in thought.
I’ll have to send you the new link when I re-post it.
Sorry to all who responded to that blurb…I asked Cheat to remove my comment (which took away everything else) because I didn’t want my photobucket account linked in stone. :(

Not just splinters...but potential wooden projectiles. Frying bacon nude is certainly dangerous, but possibly worth the pain in some sort of thrilling, sadomasochistic way.

Do lions go for wrinkly, old human though? Maybe you should go for vultures or hyenas or something more scavenger-esque.

I liked a few songs, none that I would actually buy it. Oh well, Def Jam will pick up the tab so he can go 3x platinum again.

Books and Music....maybe some people here would care to contribute?
For five years now, Continuum Publishing’s 33 1/3 Series (named for the speed at which an LP record spins) has given music-loving bookworms over 50 hip little volumes that marry their two obsessions beautifully.
Written mostly by musicians and music critics, each book in the series concerns a pop album that played a momentous role in the author’s life, and can take the form of an essay, extended review, memoir, novella, interview with the artist—or some hybrid thereof.

I am thankful for
Nas (nothing says thanksgiving like albums tentatively titled the N-word), John Legend (who else can I pilfer love poetry from), Chicago hip-hop, never forgotten greats like Rage Against the Machine, Dr. Dre, Warren G. Also thankful for Bollywood music, because I am amazed as to how the country that releases more movies than anyone else can make nothing but love movies, have 5 songs per movie about love, yet never run out of material.
Finally, I am thankful for the Internet and mp3s, because radio makes my soul bleed.

Was going through my hard drive listening to things that I posses but have never listened to and I came away very impressed by “Diseases”.
I also discovered that Pete Yorn isn’t horrible, for whatever that’s worth.

I have always categorized him as one of them "20-something pussies with a guitar."
But in all honesty, I never gave him, John Mayer, Ryan Adams, and whoever else you can think of along those lines, a fair shot because I was too busy making fun of my best friend, Mike, for listening to that shit.

and I’d like to point out that “isn’t horrible” is not any sort of endorsement. Just that I didn’t feel like bashing my computer to pieces while hearing some douche play his acoustic guitar, which is my normal reaction to such music. Mr. Yorn may have just caught me on a good night.

Agreed
But I tend not to like music with acoustic guitar, possibly because there is so much horrible music out there that utilizes said instrument. Obvious exceptions to my rule are classical and Spanish guitar music.
In general, I agree with Hoodie that the best music lacks guitar.

Because I noticed I'm only 50 of the 104 comments on my Fanpost, as usual - here's another one.
I’ve had the Bon Iver album since Spring. Been giving it a listen here and there, thought it was well-done, but never really gotten into it. Summer is a hard time for me to want to get into moody, acoustic music.
But Fall/Winter is the PERFECT time for this album (“For Emma, Forever Ago”)! (Now that the sun is gone from Seattle….)
I have finally found my mood to enjoy this music. What a beautiful album. Highly-recommended.

there are a number of good songs and i like it
but for whatever reason it ends up feeling monotonous as a whole album. there’s something missing there, but i’m not sure what. i do like that it’s short. albums as a whole are almost always 20 minutes too long.

fuck yeah, thanksgiving.
recorded thanksgiving day, 1976:

listened to the entire 4-disc box set on the drive back to school yesterday.
“caravan” with van morrison is incredible, as is “the weight” with the staples singers (mavis staples has one of the best voices i’ve ever heard — actually, had, because she sounds like a man nowadays)
the film is even better than the discs, too. for anyone who hasn’t seen it, GO. NOW.
