Who wants Ken Griffey Jr?

Multiple teams, according to this MLB.com article. This could be good news for the Sox who might be able to pick up an extra draft pick by offering Junior arbitration. Though given the Sox recent reluctance to offer arbitration to departing players, I doubt they'll be willing to take the risk of him accepting.

What to do, with Larry Hughe?

by Rudey on Nov 28, 2008 7:31 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They would be nuts to offer him arbitration

with him coming off of whatever he was making ($14million?) Just like he would be nuts to turn down the arbitration offer.

He is looking at $3-$4 million max, I would guess, as a free agent. In arbitration, he makes some multiple of that – his case could start and end with pictures of the only four guys in history with more home runs.

The Sox should not offer Griffey arbitration.

I like Griffey a lot. With Thome on the team though there is nowhere he can realistically play for 162 games. (though I still like him better than the in house candidates of Anderson and Owens)

The Sox are nutsy if they don’t offer it to Orlando Cabrera though. If he accepts I would be happy as I think he is a better option for a year than anything else they will have in the middle infield. If he doesn’t (which he won’t) you get 2 picks in the first round.

Its funny

that you think that GS is actually capable of playing 162 games. And a candidate for what? CF? What drugs have you been mixing tonight?

So would anyone object if OC does accept arbitration?

Falls into the oh shit category, but we can live can’t we. Che back to second?

Or can we trade him after arbitration, and if so, do we eat the salary?

I’m sorry I’m a novice for the business end of baseball

well most of the times you trade the salary, unless you really want to get rid of the player and agree to pay some of his salary (like Phils did with Thome). But yeah, OC does hate here: cold weather and strong veteran personalities in the club house are just killing him. No one gives a crap about him when there is Thome, JD, Buerhle, etc to talk with about baseball and other stuff… And then on the field Q! and/or Chelexei took all the attention with them.

I thought he was solid, but I will not miss him much.

Wow the holiday traffic around here is killer,

We have to offer OC arbitration….. He won’t sign it…. he hates it here..

2 more picks is just good to pass up…..

Our farm system is looking more and more like it’s on the right track. If we were to add 3 (our pic plus the 2 from OC) more high updside guys to Beckham, Poreda, Dayan. Our future might actually look bright….

Just so long as kenny doesn’t trade it all away…

so you can choose one or two of them to play and trade the rest for stars. I have ZERO problem with trading prospects. Most of the time they are busts anyway

Agreed..... but,

I’m very interested to see who of the three prospects pans out.

Looking forward to spring training and hearing more about Viciedo’s light tower power and want to know what kind of defense he has…

The talk that Poreda could be a solid reliever right now has me hoping that he can develop another average to plus pitch to be an effective starter…

I quietly think that Becks has star potential…it seems to me though that he is extremely streaky with the bat

Getting a better read on how far away Jordan Danks is….. 2010…? If the sox season goes badly does he get a cup of coffee.

holy shit.

highly recommend reading the whole thing.

ATTN KW: Statistical Analysis of Willy Taveras & How To Fix Him, Read this, then call up Colorado and do the deal right now

Now here’s my thinking. Willy came up in his first full season of ’05 and played relaxed the whole year and that is why his numbers deep in the count, most specifically in the 1-2 and 3-2 counts are so good. He was not thinking about getting on base and fulfilling expectations of a lead-off man, he was just watching the ball and reacting. I cannot believe that the level of pitching in the National League improved so much to cause this, because if it did his other numbers would be affected, which they have not been. Somehow after ’05 the pressure on him mounted and he probably ended up overthinking at the plate. When he went to Colorado, maybe somebody told him to walk more or something, or he felt that he needed to. If there was a stat about called third strikes on 3-2 counts it could be very telling in regards to Taveras.

All Willy needs to be a better player is a manager that will 1) encourage early and often bunting, especially on the slower grass at the Cell that will make it harder on the 3B to come in and will force the catcher to make a throw behind the runner more often, 2) a hitting coach who will take pressure off of him and basically do nothing at all except tell him to NOT worry about the walk and instead be aggressive, especially on 3-2, and 3) a winning environment in front of loud fans who will cheer him for every stolen base or bunt hit and boost his confidence, allowing him to focus on his best skills and forget about whatever it is that is causing him to lose confidence late in his at-bats.

So in all, TRADE FOR WILLY TAVERAS!!! He’s a great buy-low candidate and all he needs is a confidence boost, which I strongly believe he’ll get in Chicago. Don’t wait around, he could end up our next Podsednik, except this one can actually play CF.

and then proceeds to conclude that the reason he’s a shitty player is that he doesn’t have enough confidence. quite rich.

The words "encourage", "pressure", "expectation", "overthinking",

and the phrases “if there was a stat”, “winning environment”, “boost his confidence”, and “forget about whatever is causing” do not lend themselves to any statistical analysis. Hell, even I know better than to post that shit anymore.

to the change now that more stringent steroid testing has change the style of baseball being played. IIRC the Twins scored more runs than us and they had an unproven leadoff hitter to get things going. 3 guys in their line up had pop… the rest were… well… BA’s and JO’s.

So let me follow your logic then

the Sox tried a high OBP guy that worked for a little, but ended up not for a little, so they moved him out. Now since that didn’t work, you feel like it’s not a bad idea to give a guy with below average power, below average OB skills, and below average bunting skills a shot at lead off because it can’t be worse. Agreed!

Unless we sign someone, what harm is there for Owens to play center? Who’s the other choices, Wise and Anderson? Wise did well towards the end. Not guaranteed to see it again. I would rather see BA as a bench player who pinch runs for the dinosaurs on the team presently. He is good player, but not an effective starter due to his hitting, which is just below average.

If Kenny signs a center field like Taveras or even not likely Gary matthews Jr, then yeah the talk of dismissing JO should go. But the kid hasn’t even played a full season and when he did play towards the end of ‘07, didn’t look all that bad. Can’t hurt to give the kid a shot.

If only it was listed on free, independently-run reference site.

For those wondering…

Taveras took 29, 32, 28, and 38 called third strikes in ’05, ’06, ’07 and ’08, respectively.

Clearly, those 8 extra events over 500+ PAs are significant

With Several Bullpen Spots to Fill, Mets Are Making Sure to Explore All Options
The Mets remain interested in the free-agent closers Francisco Rodríguez and Brian Fuentes, but they will continue to scour the trade market for relievers before engaging in substantive discussions with either pitcher, according to two people in baseball with knowledge of their strategy.

While General Manager Omar Minaya has had only preliminary conversations with the agents for Rodríguez and Fuentes, he has had continuing discussions with at least four teams about their relievers. Minaya has had discussions about José Valverde of the Houston Astros, Huston Street of the Colorado Rockies, J. J. Putz of the Seattle Mariners and Bobby Jenks of the Chicago White Sox.

In addition to Minaya’s trade targets, the Mets are also evaluating the free agents Kerry Wood and Trevor Hoffman because they will be cheaper to sign than Rodríguez or Fuentes. Rodríguez will pursue a five-year, $75 million contract, and Fuentes could ask for a three-year deal for at least $30 million. Paul Kinzer, one of Rodríguez’s agents, has acknowledged that his client may not secure a deal worth what he is seeking.

As much as the Mets want to stabilize their bullpen, their strategy is to have options in addition to Rodríguez and Fuentes.

If the Mets add a reliever through a trade or by signing Wood or Hoffman, they could still pursue Rodríguez or Fuentes and would have more negotiating leverage.

The Mets want to add one of the top free-agent closers, but if they end up with two relievers from their other options, they seem convinced that they do not have to sign Rodríguez or Fuentes. …

a “closer” arguably on the decline for a “shortstop” who arguably might be a top 5 player in mlb (#7 in 2008 vorp rankings)???

perhaps you’re insulting kw’s intelligence suggesting that he’s waiting for the mets to fold and hand over reyes…i would like to give you the benefit of the doubt.

just come up with something a tad more realistic, that’s all…

SATURDAY: John Fay got Walt Jocketty to admit he’s talked to the White Sox (nothing is close). Jocketty’s non-denial about the Dye rumor seems to indicate it’s accurate.

Talking to Walt

Posted by JohnFay at 11/29/2008 5:51 PM EST on Cincinnati.com

Walt Jocketty got back to me since the previous post.

He said things have been quiet.

“Most clubs shut it down on the holidays,” he said.

On the Jermaine Dye report: “I’m not going to comment. But we have talked to the White Sox about some players. Nothing is close.” (Blogger’s note: The way tampering rules work, Jocketty can not say he’s pursuing Dye. But, in the case of Khalil Greene, he was comfortable with shooting down the rumor). So there’s probably some interest in Dye. But I’ve seen reports where the Phillies, Braves, Rays and Cardinals may be interested as well. That puts the White Solx in a strong position.

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

I really don't see how people on here are even comparing Jerry Owens and Willy Taveras

Willy T in my eyes is clearly better. I can’t think of one thing that Jerry Owens does or will do better.

If Owens were to somehow leadoff and bat 280, steal 50 bases while being caught say 8 times, play above average defense with 6 or 7 assists everyone would go crazy….

Those are Willy’s averages from the last 2 seasons in 230 games….

Oh and he is 10 months younger than Jerry Owens.

Atleast BA plays solid defense (3 errors in his career). BA is a 4th OF

To me Owens shouldn’t even be an option… I know i keep bringing up his age but he will be 28 before the season starts…. and he hasn’t proved anything…. no arm, no pop…. How can people on here honestly think that he is going to learn to bunt right now…. as if at no point in the last 15 or so years he has been playing baseball not one coach thought “Hey, we should get Jerry to work on bunting he’s really fast.”

I am going to ask you one time, and i'm gonna ask you nice. Where the fuck is Ringo bitch.

i'm not saying i dig him...

but looking at the numbers he is much steadier than owens or BA

and that fact that he’s younger and managed to hold down a job for the last 4 years says something…. i know that he has platooned and had a little injury but, compared to BA and Owens he seems like a dreamboat to me…

You can’t talk about Owens potential…. or Ba….

If Taveras can be had for cheap then i think he’s a better option than the 2 we have….
He’s a leads off hitter, he steals bases, he provides good defense and, he possess a strong arm…that’s more than what we have…

It’s not like i’m saying that this is my go to guy of the off season. I can think of atleast 15 other center fielders that i like more. I just think that he is better than what we currently have.

good man

agreed. I really appreciate the attention to detail in that film — good example, scene where little bill’s wife is getting railed on a towel at one of the colonel’s parties and he’s talking about the lighting or photography, he’s so upset that he says “my wife’s got an ass in her cock”

Just Little Bill in general is funny.

The portrait of him that Sheryl Lynn paints that is on the wall after he goes apeshit.

Anything that Buck Swope says about stereo equipment.

The pool scene where Reed and Eddie meet and are talking about weightlifting.

When they talk to the record exec about needing the tapes to get the contract to get the money for the tapes. And the fact that they own the magic on those tapes.

The entire documentary of Dirk
