Dye-ing For Fresh News
Last week we pointed to a report stating the Sox were shopping Jermaine Dye to the Reds, looking for a young pitcher (and more) in return, and were looking to trim some payroll. Baseball essentially shut down over the Thanksgiving holiday, and there won't be any real news until teams make their arbitration offers official sometime Monday, so here's some stale news.
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe says that Dye is a fit for a number of teams, but they seem put off by the price.
The White Sox right fielder fits so well with a few teams, including Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, and the Mets. The Rays are trying to deal the back of their starting rotation - Andy Sonnanstine or Edwin Jackson - for a power-hitting righthanded bat, but the White Sox would want more.
John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer gets Reds GM Walt Jockety to issue a non-denial about the Dye talks.
As for talk that the Reds could be interested in outfielder Jermaine Dye, whom the Chicago White Sox are reported to be shopping, Jocketty said:
"I'm not going to comment. But we have talked to the White Sox about some players. Nothing is close."
The way tampering rules work, Jocketty cannot say he's pursuing Dye. But in the case of San Diego shortstop Khalil Greene, Jocketty was comfortable shooting down the rumor.
And finally, Mark Gonzales acknowledges the reports adding a couple more names to the fray.
The teams appear to be a match because the Reds are looking for a right-handed hitter to go with young left-handed hitters Joey Votto and Jay Bruce, and the Reds have a wealth of talented pitchers, including Homer Bailey, Josh Roenicke and Matt Maloney.
Of course, here I am writing about it without much to add. I will add that if the Sox are going to trade Dye for the proposed packages, I see it as the first of a series of moves. They can't go into another season with one-and-a-half outfielders. And now Jerry Owens can go about dominating the third consecutive thread here. Paradoxically, it will be the first time he's ever dominated anything three consecutive times.

Merkin on Dye
Dye stands out as a steady, and oftentimes spectacular, performer from year-to-year since coming to the White Sox in 2005. He also has earned the respect of everyone from general manager Ken Williams to manager Ozzie Guillen and right on down the line for his approach to the game, with the ability to adapt to something like a change to his spot in the batting order without complaint.
That sort of player doesn’t often get shopped, but then again, Williams will listen to offers for pretty much any and all of his charges. If the deal makes sense, bringing back a quality starting pitcher and some sort of low-risk, high-reward outfielder — like Carlos Quentin was last December, as an example — Williams could take this chance to go a little younger for the future while staying competitive in the present.
I didn’t knew JD was so good…

In your opinion, why should the White Sox keep Jose Contreras on the team?

If Dye is traded...
I wonder if Juan Rivera is a possible target (he is a free agent, right?). He would seemingly be a decent, cheap buy, assuming after the leg injury that he can still play a non-terrible LF (moving Q to right).
At the very least it’s looking like there’s a pretty good market for Dye, which is always nice…
I was thinking about that last week too.

I read on mlbtraderumors
that the Brewers will be shopping Cameron for pitching if they don’t resign C.C. Do we have anyone for them? Richard?
I wanted Cameron last year. Would have been nice if we had him instead of Swisher in CF and still kept our prospects.
www.stallingtheman.blogspot.com
He's pretty much exactly average in wins per 600 AB
+3 def + 2.5 pos adj – 3 off = 2.5 runs above average ~ 1/4 win abavg
using marcel + bill james/2 for wOBA found on fangraphs, tango’s pos adj’s and chone’s d-proj.
at 2.5 M per half win above replacement, that’s ~ 5 half wins * 2.5 = 12.5 M per year. he’s due 10 on the team option. so he’s a nice asset, in any case. on top of that, i think he’s a decent bet to beat that, since he’s a good athlete. 36 year olds projecting for above average CF? pretty impressive. i’d bet he’s an A type, too, but don’t feel like looking it up. in any case, you could replace prospects pretty rapidly provided you didn’t give up too much. really, though, the Sox should be looking for a stop gap, not a rental.

your numbers are different.
the degree and efficacy of ass pulling is debatable. however, it is still present.
slightly. they pegged him at a ~.360 wOBA, which is slightly above his career average, for his age 35 season.
it’s a reasonable assumption is all i’m trying to say. use 5/4/3 weighting for adjusted wOBA and you get ~ .370, a half win better on 600 PA. makes sense to make a conservative estimate there anyway, since there are age concerns and all that. if that’s still ass pulling to you, okay then.

i think daniel's point
if i’m reading him correctly, is that one can easily game such numbers to get the result one wants to argue. most especially when the valuation is, no matter which reasonable assumptions one uses, a close one. the stridency of the argument doesn’t match that which underpins it. that would certainly be my point.
and its import was totally ignored
we killed logic, they killed mirth.

It takes a magical ass to produce numbers supporting that one or two years of Dye is anywhere near as valuable as the next four years of Sonnanstine.
Jackson, maybe.
Beyond the Boxscore // Calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy.
considering the substance of the post didn't address sonnanstine
i would imagine the point was more directed towards edwin, no?
It takes a special kind of numbers cruncher to completely fail to address whether the move would make the Rays a better team
I would think that, if one were going to put energy into calculations based around replacement level, one would actually bother to address the actual replacements, marginal wins over true replacement, if you will.
Jackson arguably has a negative Marginal Wins Over his True Replacement, David Price. So, jettisoning him for anything of value is a net win for the Rays.
Add in Dye’s MWOTR be it Nick Evans (as speculated in the post) or more accurately Ruggiano, and the Rays come out way on the positive side of the Win ledger.
With some acknowledgment that marginal wins are more valuable to a playoff team, one which was a few wins away from a world series, one which figures to be in baseball’s toughest division again next season, and I don’t see how “This Rumor Stinks” any more than the analysis/rationale provided.

One might also want to consider money...
…since paying $10+MM to Dye could just as well go to a number of free agent mashers without paying trade costs.
And one might also want to consider more than just the 2009 (and possibly 2010 with Dye) season.
And one might want to consider that just because trading Jackson for just about anything would make the Rays a better team doesn’t mean that trading Jackson for Dye is a smart move. There’s a significant chance they could get something more valuable.
But, you know, dramatic rhetoric is the most important thing.

number one when it mattered!
I mean if you were really clever, then maybe
you would take a look at the scene in Hamlet , you know “The Murder of Gonzago” scene.
number one when it mattered!
You assume that there is a free agent out there that gives the Rays more net value than a -Edwin Jackson, +Jermaine Dye
which is a steep assumption indeed. The perturbing part isn’t that R.J. suggested that the Rays are better off solving the problem within, which is perfectly tolerable; when he suggests that Jackson will automatically gain value, especially considering his peripherals, and when he suggests that Dye will automatically regress, it seems as though he’s simply manipulating imaginary numbers to his advantage. We don’t know whether this will happen, but here’s what we do know; there isn’t a player on the free agent, in the Rays price range, market that outclasses Dye in all facets. For one, they seem to love the idea of Giambi coming over, when he is older, less durable, equally offensively productive, and can’t play in the outfield at all. They think he won’t cost as much, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he did. If it’s a DH they want, fine, but it seems as though the Rays are searching for a right fielder at the moment.
There also seems to be the assumption that Dye will cost more financially than the free agents. There isn’t enough fact to support that right now. Most of the free agents in question would be taking a significant pay cut to go under Dye’s salary.
If they don’t like the idea of acquiring a player for whatever reason, that’s fine; however, it looks bad when you make such an assertion as “This rumor stinks” with a sloppy argument.

Some Win Accounting for 2009
I was mostly doing this to see if I could do it. I took the average of Marcel and Bill James from fangraphs. These are probably the least desirable of all the projection systems out there, but fangraphs provides wOBA which is super easy to convert to runs and wins. Defense is from Chone’s projections and position adjustments are per Tango. I used the -10 for AJ’s defense as a reasonable estimate if he’s really declined, as it’s apparently about what Mike Piazza was on average per the new THT annual.
The oddest one by far is BA, but if he can get above .320 with his wOBA, he becomes pretty much average because of his defense (I plugged in a +5 runs rather than Chone there, which is -2).
I didn’t feel like figuring out the platoon and seeing what happened if we totally punted is valuable. Getz didn’t have anything more than a Marcel, and it was pretty much all regressed afaik, but I still think it looks about right. Alexei becomes far more valuable by moving across the diamond.
I’m not sure about how to do the pitchers as of yet. I’m getting too tired to remember what to do with leverage. For the pitchers 3 year weighted, I did 5/4/3 weighting and if they weren’t in the majors, I substituted 6.00 tRA for that year. that obviously hurts Danks and Richard the most. the average starters is just kind of whatever…it’s varied enough that i don’t know what it’ll look like in ’09. might be better to use tRA+.
And of course, I suck at math, so who knows. I like practice. It looks like we’re an above average starter and position player away in ‘09. that’s kind of a lot.

you're probably aware, also, that substituting 6.00 tRA where I did was a smidge much, at least according to BtBs

Can the Sox get Sonnanstine and Balfour?
I’d love to do that. Balfour can become the closer.
Trade Jenks and load up.
Get a good outfielder back for Javy.
Balfour is a one-pitch pitcher.
He’s a good set-up guy, not a closer. He also seems to be a pretty emotional guy, not necessarily the cool gunslinger type. (Channeled, the emotion is fine. He seems to be somewhat unchanneled.)
Jenks will not bring back those 2 without giving something else up.

I think he was saying for Dye.
One year of Dye with an option is not going to bring back a #3 starter and a top setup guy.

because of contract status. but that’s not an unfair return for two years of dye depending upon what the contract situation of two players looks like.

The really notable thing: 3 Sox pitchers in the top 20 in the AL (Buehrle, Vazquez and Danks). Vazquez obviously wasn’t the 4th best, but he was still better than most realize I suspect. In any case, just underlines that pitching carried the Sox in ’08.

just what he said.
he can’t say anything to the press about it without permission from the white sox.
which presumably they never give until it doesn't matter?

also: anyone watching the State - Minny replay from the college hockey showcase?
it’s on B10 network and it’s a friggin scorefest. 4 – 3 with 5 left in the 2nd. kinda makes me wish more CCHA teams had Oly ice.

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

FROM STNG WIRE REPORTS
Police are searching for a man who robbed a Downtown bank Monday morning and fled on foot.
The Bank of America bank branch on the 500 block of North Michigan Avenue was robbed about 9:40 a.m., according to police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak.
According to unconfirmed police dispatch reports, the robber was a 5-foot-8 black man wearing a tan coat, tan fedora and black business clothes underneath. He was believed to have fled on foot to Lower Michigan Avenue following the robbery.
He allegedly slipped a note to a teller informing them he was armed and demanded money, according to unconfirmed reports.
The FBI and police remained at the scene at 10:20 a.m.

Weakening the outfield again?
Trading Dye would just weaken the outfield even more. Stay with the outfield we have plus maybe one free agent. If we trade Dye though, we would have to get some top prospects to deal Dye.
The Trade-Maker
So here's the question...
It appears everyone with a select few are against JO in center, i myself would entertain it but would rather someone else
BA isn’t a proven starter IMO
And no way are we stargazing with Gen Soreness again
So who would be the ideal CF for the White Sox that’s available?
Just wanted to get your guys thoughts
Besides Tavarres
