weekly music thread
since our faithful associate editor is busy with schoolwork (trust me, i laughed as incredulously as i'm sure you are right now), i'm posting the surely much anticipated "what the f$#k have you been listening to in the last week?!?" thread.
i saw a LOT of great funky and bluegrassy music at a festival outside of yosemite thursday-sunday. if any of you are still in chicago and dig some rippin' progressive bluegrass, you should check out cornmeal at the vic the saturday after thanksgiving. they play lots of originals, as well as funk up some classic covers from the likes of pink floyd, santana, bob marley, and the bee gees. they have tons of shows available for free (and legal) download on archive.org (if you make it over that way, i'd suggest their halloween show from last week, their big meadow set from early july, and the sets from this past weekend at the festival mentioned above).
i''ve also been bouncing some "southern rock opera" by the drive-by truckers, continuing to hit the new deerhunter record a lot, and returning to my old g n' r roots.
what about all y'all? and what about chris getz?

no big bands = specifics would bore everybody to death. not to mention the specifics may in fact be quite incriminating.

i used to live in west virginia, Appalachian/bluegrass music quite popular down there. i remembered donna the buffalo being quite popular..

yellow house
i have a similar relationship with yellow house. i liked it when i bought it, and listened to it pretty frequently for a while, but then once it got bumped out of the rotation by some newer stuff, i never had the urge to go back to it. but then when i finally did give it another spin, i really liked it again. it has some sort of reverse nostalgia quality.
anyway, this week i can get enough of cut copy’s ‘in ghost colours.’ i’ve also been listening to okkervil river’s ‘the stand ins,’ which is good but not great.

I've had a chance to get through Microcastle a couple of times now
I like it as an album, it’s very well put-together. I don’t think there are any standout songs (if I was forced to name two I’d say “Nothing Ever Happened” and "Agoraphobia") that I’d put particularly on my iPod but I’m really digging the ‘flow’ of the CD and the whole of the CD rather than any individual parts.

the original cody chesnutt version is pretty swell as well.
i still love the roots, but wish there was more “do you want more?!?” and “iladelph halflife” in the newer records. everything after “things fall apart” has been fine but not great.

Agreed re: the newer stuff, particularly Rising Down. I never got into it a whole lot (I do like the individual song Rising Down, though).
Then again, I don’t know a whole bunch of their early stuff either. I had a chance to see ‘em live a few weeks ago but didn’t want to pay the $20 (or $30) and instead saw Local H (who were okay) at a smaller venue for a cheaper price.

I have a couple of their albums that I think are great (Never Hear The End of It, One Chord to Another), but all their old stuff is out of print, which makes their catalog hard to fill out.

Also, can somebody explain the Fleet Foxes' appeal to me?
Whenever I ask people what they’re listening to, FF are one of the top three bands mentioned.
So I’ve given them something like five chances. And… I don’t get it.
It’s not like they’re bad. They’re actually somewhat pleasant. But it’s wafer-thin to me, and commands every ounce of my attention to not get distracted from it. What’s the universal payoff I’m missing out on?

there are bands who use the elements FF use arranged more interestingly, so it isn’t like they’re pushing some especially new direction.

As I’ve said before, I think they have a long way to go to be as interesting as they could be. But I feel like they might get there someday….evolving is necessary.

I have always loved morel orel
the hunting episodes were some of the funniest/most unsettling pieces of entertainment i’ve ever seen. also, for some reason, I find broken marriages hilarious. The father is the greatest part of that show, and his completely depraved twisted advice is hysterical/depressing. I like the combination of those two.

I just listened to "Golden Age" from Dear Science
what a fucking great song. I listened to it again and then again 10 min later. Here’s a list from just now:
1)TVotR – Golden Age
2)TVotR – Wash the Day
3)The Apples In Stereo – Lucky Charm
4)The Avalanches – Live at Dominoes
5)Beat Happening – I Love You
6)Beat Happening – In My Memory
7)Beck – Devil’s Haircut
8)Blondie – Hanging on the Telephone
9)Bob Dylan – Tombstone Blues
If you’re looking for a common thread (aside from "awesomeness"), there isn’t one other than these were songs I’d tagged to go listen to again later sometime.

Released in November 1968, Astral Weeks is a work of such singular beauty, such sustained emotional intensity, that nothing recorded before or since sounds even remotely similar – or, indeed, comparable. Elvis Costello would later describe it as ‘still the most adventurous record made in the rock medium’, adding that ‘there hasn’t been a record with that amount of daring made since’. When I spoke to Nick Cave about it a few years ago, he spoke enviously of ‘its power to mesmerise and disturb’, and wondered ‘at the sheer nerve of this young guy to attempt something so obsessive and uncompromising, and then actually pull it off’.
