White Sox have "inside track" on Abreu
Bobby Abreu and his agents haven't heard from the Yankees since the season ended, but the free-agent outfielder is garnering interest from several teams. The White Sox seem to have the inside track, according to a source familiar with the situation, but Chicago would have to trade Jermaine Dye before signing Abreu.

Bobby also met with the Rays today
According to a headline of an article I cannot currently read because my work has a damn internet filter
Why? Didn't the Rays just get Joyce?

Seems like the Rays are meeting with everyone though. It would probably help to have a fanbase first.
Supposedly the Cubs also have interest in Abreu

If I'm Abreu, I go to Chicago, I don't care how good the Rays are.
Quality of life (though no state tax here). I’d have to think we’d offer more jack, too.

Kenny on the nyy
Williams certainly wasn’t surprised that the Yankees came up with this sort of mammoth offer for Sabathia, who has allowed 141 hits over 165 career innings against the White Sox, while fanning 162. Williams also realizes the big man’s addition doesn’t guarantee a World Series title.
“Believe me, I respect the Yankees and the tradition of the Yankees and what they’ve done for years,” Williams said. "Growing up, I watched how they operated, and it’s exciting. The Yankees create excitement for the game and I think it’s good for the game.
“However, it’s not a recipe for success. There are no recipes for success in this game, and no manuals to get you to a championship. They do what they have to do, and we do what we have to do.”

We just added nine guys to our system, whether it be trades or (Dayan) Viciedo. We just added nine guys, nine plus-type, high-ceiling type guys. Part of the plan with that is the extra two picks we’re getting next year for (Orlando) Cabrera’s free agency. That was a necessity that had to be done.”
http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=257361
The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.
Dye vs Abreu
Why would anyone give up anything for Dye when they could sign Abreu? The Yankees didn’t offer arbitration, so there are no draft picks to lose. I’m assuming the answer is money – that Abreu will demand more cash over a longer period than Dye so you’re better off with Dye. But, is there really a big market for Abreu? He’s not going to get anything like the $16mm he earned in 2008.
I like Dye alot, but without looking closely at the projections and stuff, I’d rather have Abreu than JD going forward. They are the same age but Abreau has been more durable and his better eye and wheels suggests he can remain a useful player after JD has been reduced to a one-dimensional slugger whose only skill is hitting mistakes to the warning track.
It all seems unlikely to me, but if Kenny can turn Dye into anything and replace him with Abreu for three years or less, that’s a good move.
Years
Abreu is probably looking for a 3-year deal… Dye is controlled (for sure) for only one more year.
When talking about older, poor defensive corner outfielders, those extra years are a burden that most teams don’t want to take on
AIM: SouthSideCheat
Three is the magic number?
Three years for Abreu seems right on the line to me. Again, I haven’t looked at any projections but I kind of expect JD to fall of soon. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if he’s league average in 2009 and a scar after that. I don’t feel that way about Abreu. It would really surprise me if he weren’t good in 09 and I’d certainly take my chances on 2010. But 2011? That’s where the rubber meets the road. He’s a fairly unique player so the historic comparables don’t really help much.
What’s your gut? Would you give him three years?
because i don't think he'll be worth the amount of money he would be paid for such a contract.
let alone a three year one.

Ok, I'll bite
Assuming that Kenny trades Dye (for the purpose of this discussion the return doesn’t really matter) what do you think Abreu would be worth for 2009?

Right now, I think the Sox have two options
1. Trade Dye — bring in a young starter better than [Starter Candidate 5] which shouldn’t be hard. Fill the Hole through free agency. Keep contract front-loaded and/or demand there be zero no-trade clause after the first season.
2. Keep Dye — Sign free agent starter better than [Starter Candidate 5] off the scrap heap. This could be a Pedro/Randy Johnson type guy, or even a couple of our old retreads Freddy/Garland. Same rules apply, zero no-trade clause after first year, and heck, try to make it a 1-year deal.
From the sounds of the Sox financial situation, option 2 might require the Sox to move another high-salary player. Since Buehrle/Pierzynski don’t make sense, and since Thome/Kong have NTCs as well as little trade value, Jenks and his soon to be $5+M seems to be the logical option. The return for Jenks could be significant, and allow the Sox to fill multiple areas of need.
AIM: SouthSideCheat
i'd send poreda to the 'stros for him.
but beckham is untouchable in such a deal.

I'm starting to think now is the opportune time to deal Jenks...
I say “starting” because I haven’t really thought a whole lot about it, but I keep thinking about the expression “better to deal someone a year early than a year late.” If you wait till next winter you’re only looking at two more (right?) of Jenks at what will be a more hefty price-tag. I wonder what KW is looking for in terms of value back - two Flowers type (not in that they’re catchers, but B/B prospects)?
So you think either but not both Bobby and JD will be gone?
Sober, I was appalled at the women. Drunk I was told I danced with them all.

Logically, I think the Sox need to trade Dye and Jenks
The Sox are looking at question marks at 2 SP spots and 3B, 2B, CF. They have no money for FAs and the minor leagues don’t have any depth to trade from. They are not realistically going to contend this season.
With Dye on a one year deal, they need to move him for a high-level prospect if they want to be good soon. But trading Dye for pushes the Sox farther from contending this season. It opens a hole in RF and the rotation is still lousy on the backend. So, moving Jenks if you can get something like Rasmus makes sense.
After those 2, the only movable contracts are Buehrle (whom I can’t bring myslef to think they should move) and maybe Dotel. They might not get anything back for Octavio, but someone will probably take the money off the Sox hands. Maybe.

Since you state . . .

Maybe should call the Rays and get David Price, that would totally be a better deal.
Aiming too high? I don't know...
Rasmus didn’t set the world on fire at AAA in the PCL. Maybe the Cards think he’s a lot more of a surefire all-star than I do, but I don’t see offering Jenks for Rasmus or Jenks+Sox prospect for Rasmus as ridiculous.

I find it amusing that all the people that
have bitched about Dye’s defense, or lack thereof, are now in support of signing a longer deal for a guy worse defensively who brings nothing additional to the plate. Amuses me greatly. Where is all the ‘we don’t need anymore DH types’ talk?
Not necessarily pointing at you landfill, but the consensus from the previous thread = Abreu > Dye.
Well I cant speak for anyone else
But for me its simple.
A) He would play LF
B) The money wouldnt be extreme
C) We would acquire another, better SP with upside
D) In his small sample he rakes here.

This is like how signing Erstad would have been OK if he was platooned properly. That’s true, but Ozzie has given no indication that he would manage that way. I’d be shocked if the sox signed Abreu and moved him to LF. Just my opinion….

Put me in the anti-abreu camp unless
it’s a very short, very cheap contract. He may be the worst OF in the AL. He was -24 by fielding bible, -25 by UZR, -12 by PMR (worse than Dye in every system). Very bad defensive players are almost always overvalued. If you can get him for 1 yr. and 8 mill (or 2/16 and switch him to DH in a year) then OK. O/w Pass.

If we keep Dye and sign a SP I can live with that also.

And I think people need to calm their expectations that Dye (via trade) is going to bring major league ready pitching that will provide a significant upgrade to what we see today.
A pitcher almost ready with significant upside

They usually don't
happen for aging corner OF who are making $12/yr. I am just saying it isn’t likely. Sure, bad deals happen all the time, I just would go ahead expecting one.
I think people will be disappointed in what Dye brings back
He alone isn’t enough to get Homer Bailey, who is a pretty risky proposition at this point.
Just my opinion, but no trade of Dye will give you anything close to a league average starting pitcher in 2009 — you are simply not going to get that for 1 year and $11M of a corner bat.
I’m all for trading Dye to get an advanced prospect, but I think trading Dye is a silly path to shore up the rotation in 2009.

that dye = bailey, and others if we kick money in….
dye= bailey straight up but, we were waiting to see if we could get more…
I am going to ask you one time, and i'm gonna ask you nice. Where the fuck is Ringo bitch.
My impression
The “others” are window dressing — Reds aren’t going to add a top prospect to the deal for a few $M. Which leads me to believe that Dye doesn’t really bring back Bailey unless the Sox send money to the Reds.
But in any case, even if he does bring back Bailey that’s not a guy that is going to solidify the rotation to compete in 2009. I’ve read enough stuff about Bailey’s loss of velocity and lack of interest in the game (preferring AAA to the bigs? WTF?) that I don’t think he’s the next Volquez.
by hitlesswonder on Dec 11, 2008 9:40 PM CST up reply actions
just speculation
if that deal goes down, then is he an upgrade next year for the rotation over other candidates? Over Candidate #5, probably, but I don’t think he is over others.
The fact that Bailey is an upgrade over Marquez
is a testament to how ridiculous it is to have Marquez as the #5 SP. I guess the Sox scouts saw something, because his minor league numbers just suck. I don’t get it.

There are so many holes in your A,B,C,D . . .
A) I don’t think the difference between an awful RF and an even worse LF makes a significant difference. So, why the change?
B) ???? That doesn’t even make sense. More than likely, Abreu will get similar $/year that Dye makes . . . except for MORE years. I have no idea where you are getting this assumption.
C) See B, baseless argument. Where is the extra $ coming from? Do you think Abreu is going to sign for $2M/year or something. Let say in a make believe world that Abreu signs for $7M/ year . . . that leaves $3M for a SP. How will that provide an upgrade? Oh, and Abreu will sign for more than $7M.
D) Does Javy get to pitch to him in his time here or does the other team have to pitch to him? I tend to think its not the park, but the pitching? Maybe?
I saw your response above so okay
but in response
A) I don’t believe Q would be an awful RF. That would likely add to the difference.
B)I pretty clearly said the money would have to be right earlier. In this market not sure why you think he is going to more money. And with Thome gone after this year, he slides into DH.
C)huh. This is all an assumption. If Kenny doesnt get his SP he doesnt trade Dye. What does money have to do with it?
D) I kind of like you know said small sample size. It was like a joke?

He's does make the important point that Abreu will not come cheap
I don’t see any significant cost savings over Dye (maybe $2M at most) for 2009. I don’t see any realistic scenario in which the Sox sign Abreu. They don’t have the money if they need to move Dye.
by hitlesswonder on Dec 11, 2008 7:15 PM CST up reply actions
My reference
to A was regarding the bitching about Dye’s defense in right . . . so, we sign Abreu and have even worse defense in left. Don’t understand that at all.
And he made $16M last year, so I don’t think he will make anywhere near that . . . but thinking he is going to go much below $10M . . . if Nick Punto gets a 2yr $8.5M deal . . . dio you really think that Abreu is going to get much below $10M?
And sorry, missed the joke . . . fair enough on that.
It's Simple
Abreu is a good bet, even if he falls off next year he least puts up a 280/360/400 line.
I can take that with the OBP.
If Dye falls off he could bottom out around 250/300/430, which is offense killing from a corner position.

No team takes MacDougal; Sox likely will pay
LAS VEGAS – The fish weren’t biting for the White Sox in Monday’s Rule 5 draft.
Bullpen flop Mike MacDougal, signed to a three-year contract after pitching well down the stretch in 2006, wasn’t claimed. He had been outrighted off the big-league roster on Nov. 14, making him eligible for the draft, but no team wanted to pick up his salary.
That means the White Sox still owe him $3 million, even if he is released or spends all of next season with Triple-A Charlotte. MacDougal, a 2003 All-Star as a rookie closer for Kansas City, made 38 appearances there in 2008 and only 16 at the big leagues. He had a 2.12 ERA in those appearances but walked 10 unintentionally in 17 innings, losing Ozzie Guillen’s confidence.
The Sox may try to deal MacDougal but apparently would have pay the bulk of the money owed him.

look at this - I'm like lightning
LAS VEGAS — The White Sox are expected to tender contracts to Bobby Jenks, Wilson Betemit and DeWayne Wise prior to Friday night’s 11 p.m. CT deadline for all arbitration-eligible players. This trio stands as the only three arbitration-eligible players on the team’s 40-man roster.
number one when it mattered!
I don't think they'll offer a contract to betemit
:p
The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.
FFS this is what you do
I’ve no idea what any of it means, I think it might be Sox related. I’m trying to help .

I might be in the minority
But i want nothing to do with Abreu.
I was in full fledged youth movement and loving it,
Bobby is poor defensively, 35 yr’s old before the season starts.
We already have a left handed hitting DH… we certainly don’t need another..
I know i know he has good stats, high obp lots of doubles….. i’m not saying he isn’t good… he doesn’t do anything for me though….
I know what his ceiling is…. i’d rather take a chance on someone else…
I am going to ask you one time, and i'm gonna ask you nice. Where the fuck is Ringo bitch.
With you! So we're must both be in the minority.

I don't think you have to worry -- Abreu is likely to be too $$
if the Sox are at the payroll limit now. I can’t see Abreu signing for less than a ballpark $10M per year for 3 years. The savings over Dye’s contract won’t even cover Jenks arb raise, so I don’t see how that would work out.

but I've been much too SSH-y with regards to the Bears this year, so I'll cut them some slack
I didn’t expect six wins much less eight (and a reasonable shot at nine or ten). And hey — they’ve found a pretty legit RB and it looks like two pretty capable receivers in Olson and Hester.
Thoughts on Orton? Is he good enough to actually hold down the spot for the next couple seasons? I’ll admit to (a) not watching the Bears enough this year to make a judgment, and (b) not being terribly knowledgeable when it comes to judging QBs in the first place (too much dependency on others… Is it his OL that’s making him look bad? Are his receivers shit? Is the system he’s in a poor one?), so I’d like to read some thoughts…
His receivers are shit
Rashied Davis shouldn’t be in the NFL.

My comments were more general re: evaluating a QB, not in particular to Orton
yes, I understand that when Brandon Lloyd (although he’s been halfway decent when healthy this year, yes?) and Rasheed Davis are seeing as much time as they are, your WR core isn’t too good. I was happy to hear from an announcer a week or two back that the Bears are now running a good percentage of plays with the two TE set. I always thought it a waste to (a) not have Olson on the field (even with Clark out there) and (b) to put a fullback out there if he isn’t very good.
Yah, Lloyd was doing well
One of my roommates is from San Fran, and he was shocked and very bitter over how well Lloyd was doing
-Jeeves Life in the Cell
olson is the best receiver on the team. he will be the go-to guy for a while. he's got wr speed in a te body. great mismatch.
hester is meh. sometimes he looks good, like tonight, but he’s not a top tier nfl receiver by any means. the problem is the rest of the wr’s on the bears are terrible. that and they still suffer from abysmal play-calling for long stretches of every game by turner/lovie.

what do you mean by abysmal play calling?
Sober, I was appalled at the women. Drunk I was told I danced with them all.
The complete absence of Forte in the second half was pretty noteworthy.

that seems more like a personnel selection problem
i was thinking more like play sequencing, running sufficient counters for base plays, achieving a maximal run/pass mix. most people when they have play calling issues point to one or two plays in isolation from the rest of the game and i usually wind up thinking that those are baseless arguments. but he said “long stretches” which makes me think of the above.

Personnel selection? Wha?
Forte was on the field. He didn’t get the ball. You’re overthinking again.

no i'm not
i didn’t see the game. i was just curious about the playcalling thing.
Sober, I was appalled at the women. Drunk I was told I danced with them all.
first off, the bears coaching staff (and management at large) suffer from a major ego problem.
they’ve very vocally announced that they are a running team, which is fine, but then they proceed to always run out of run formations and pass out of pass formations. the idea that they are going to telegraph to the opponent what they plan to do, and then do it, is just arrogant.
obviously, the main advantage that the offense has over the defense is that the offense knows where they’re going, and the defense has to react. the bears have decided to negate that advantage by taking predictability to the extreme. time and time again, we have to watch the old guard/wisdom of the nfl act as if the man’s way to play football is to line up against the opponent and run into them.
the teams that have continued to have success over the last decade have been highly adept at deception, i.e. lining up 4 wide receivers and running up the middle because the defense is spread out. the bears love to go 3 te’s and the i-formation and then run right up the middle. the bears think they have balanced the offense by running/passing equally, but they don’t seem to understand that it’s about the unpredictability of play-calling that makes it effective.
Cashing checks and having sex.
And by the way, Forte's
biggest plays this year have come from running out of a 4 wide set . . . i.e. against the Colts. So, they do it just not enough.
that is about the worst group
of NFL receivers you will find and he has been pretty good despite that. They have many other issues they need to address, but for once, I don’t think QB is one of them.
The bane of so many posters here apperently.

I'll agree with despite knowing nothing about football
The Bears have many positions weaker than QB — WR being one of them. Orton seems like a generally competent QB at the least. He’s far from their biggest issue.
He’s had several great games this season. And he’s seems pretty accurate on short mid-range passes — I’ve actually seen him hit receivers in stride. I’m not convinced he can go deep and I’ve read that he’s “a single read QB” whatever that means (presumably that is ineffective if his first option is covered). But I think he’s OK.

I'm hearing now that the Sox have.........
the inside track as long as they’re willing to pay him more than any other team – 3 years/$45 mil.
