The trades of Nick Swisher and Javier Vazquez reaped another benefit in Chicago on Friday, as the White Sox officially announced the signing of free agent third baseman Dayan Viciedo.

Viciedo will receive a $4 million signing bonus and earn $1 million in 2009, $1.25 million in 2010 and 2011 and $2.5 million in 2012.

Speaking of "shape", Ozzie says Dayan is a fat sack of shit:

Like I say, he’s got to come in shape," said Guillen of Viciedo, who was told by the White Sox to lose 10 pounds before reporting to Glendale. “Spring Training is not [the place] to get yourself in shape.”

Added Wise and Viciedo to the payroll chart

http://www.southsidesox.com/pages/White-Sox-Payroll-Info

With the signing bonus, that puts the Sox at something like $91M with Jenks and the near-minimum guys yet to be added.

Looks like about a $100M payroll from here

Didn’t Colin (or was it Keith?) put together a draft of the 5 year plan with projected starters at each position going forward? Hardly perfect, of course, but a useful thing to have around. Can you find the link and put it up next to the payroll chart?

So..it's a 4 year deal

Do the Sox have arbitration rights after the 4th year? Anything?

That’s a short time frame for such a young guy.

by hitlesswonder on Dec 12, 2008 5:16 PM CST reply actions

My thoughts too

there is hope in that the deal was structured such that there was a big jump in the 4th year, which would be his first year of arbitration.

No

All international players come in as free agents.

He signed a major league deal, and thus that’s the concern; that he might have a clause like Contreras and Iguchi (and other older international guys) whereby they are declared free agents on November 15th (or some similar date) after their contract expires.

Some other interesting non-tenders...

- Daniel Cabrera. He’s certainly no worse than our current fifth starter candidates and Williams was rumored to be interested in the past, so we’ll see.

- Takashi Saito. If he’s healthy he’d give the Sox another good arm back there in case they do deal Jenks.

- Ty Wiggington. Somewhat surprised to see him non-tendered, although I can’t say I know much about the Astros’ financial situation. I bring him up not because I think the Sox will sign him, just because he looks like a pretty useful player. He’d certainly make a heckuva bench player.

Sox currently over-budget according to KW

And that’s without the arb raise to Jenks.

To me, that means dealing Dye frees up very little money. I would expect that someone besides Dye needs to dealt which leaves at least one of Jenks, Buehrle, and Dotel on the block I would think.

by hitlesswonder on Dec 13, 2008 3:47 PM CST reply actions

I would imagine he has the Jenks arb figured in his assessment

While it’s unknown what the final figure will be it’s pretty simple to ballpark in the $5+M range

It's hard from the radio to tell

Also, “a little over” is pretty vague. Either way, the Sox will shed more salary — KW said he wasn’t under pressure to get under budget right now. But I think that just means that there’s time left and he’s not against the wall yet. Really, I think he’s being honest about this and it means at least 2 things:

1) That one of Dye or Jenks are almost almost a lock to move.
2) That the FA signings following such a move are not going to be high profile. Which means no Abreu. The Sox need a SP and CF so I’d think Willy T and something Cabrera-esque (although he’s maybe too pricey).

I’d be unsurprised to to see Owens and a more established “leadoff man” in the OF together batting 9 and 1 respectively.

I love this...

I thought he looked really good…

It looked like he hit a lot of game winners… and he must drive in a lot of runs.
He didn’t have an errors at 3rd base in the video i watched….
He was just killing and i mean killing the soft toss….

seriously… this reminds me of when iguchi signed and people were breaking down his swing from grainy you tube videos.

I prefer to trust the scouts and slate him in as our # 3 prospect…. with potential to be our # 1
The only thing i saw from the video is that he could be a beast of a man… Huge shoulders and looked very fluid borderline athletic. If that was recent video he doesn’t really look like he needs to drop that much weight.

You don’t really draft and follow, same JUCO conference as Buehrle (38th)… Those guys usually aren’t taken until day 2 — give them another year of play, during which you don’t have to pay them, then decide — Both Buehrle and Pujols received bonuses significantly above their slot (though I don’t know what either figure is)… The Sox and Cards both new they had something when they signed them…

who wants to read some stupid, ahem, analysis?
To truly assess Flowers’ prospect value, one simply can’t ignore the following information:

   1. Shortly after the calendar turns to 2009, Flowers will be 23 and will not have an at bat above A+ ball. In comparison, Delmon Young is four months older than Flowers and has logged well over 1300 big league at bats. (thanks for the totally irrelevant comparison; in comparison, my left forearm currently itches)
   2. While Flowers currently plays catcher, from everything I’ve read, I would put the odds of him remaining behind the plate at 70/30 against. ( charter member: future oddsmakers of america) A move to first base means the power isn’t a bonus, it’s a must sapping much of his additional perceived value.
   3. The Braves traded him QUICKLY after the end of the AFL! This is huge as the deal reeks of the Braves selling high and jumping at an opportunity to land a 200 inning workhorse without dealing Freeman, Heyward, Hanson, or Schafer. (considering KW’s history, blind squirrel may have found nut)
   4. Flowers STILL ranked in the bottom quarter of Baseball America’s top 20 AFL prospects. (who cares?)
   5. I have not read a single analysis of Flowers’ performance saying his stock has significantly risen post AFL as he was, and still is a borderline top 100 player. (that’s because that would be a really stupid thing to write; how many times can a guy re-state the same point about the AFL, just slightly different…?).
   6. AFL statistics can be misleading as Eugenio Velez and Sam Fuld were two of the breakout performers from the 2007 AFL season. While both are not the prospects Flowers is, it’s a good indicator of how misleading AFL output can be. (apparently, four times)

When combining his .291/.400/.488 career minor league line, AFL performance, and anecdotal information, I’m left agreeing with most prospect analysts who consider him a borderline top 100 player even after his dominating fall. At this point, too many question marks surround Flowers to consider him an elite talent.

While the writing reeks with attitude, I don't think the conclusion is wrong

The consensus of stuff I read was that Flowers was a B/B- prospect unlikely to stick behind the plate. He’s hasn’t faced a significant amount of advanced pitching yet. My opinion is crap, but saying he’s borderline 100 seems eminently reasonable to me. And his age is an issue — is Soto a better comparison? He was more advanced at Flowers age as well.

interview with richard dotson, former sox pitcher and charlotte pitching coach

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=8368

David Laurila: Comparing eras, how did pitching in the 1980s differ from today?

Richard Dotson: From my perspective, gosh, the cutter is a little bit bigger pitch now than it used to be. I mean, there were guys who threw somewhat of a cutter, or a small slider, but I see that as being used more now. I’d say that the style of pitching in the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s included a lot more drop-and-drive type of guys, sort of along the lines of Tom Seaver, as far as his delivery to the plate—you know, the emphasis on using your legs. We still try to use the legs, but as far as the posture of the pitcher, at least here with the White Sox, we try to emphasize staying taller and creating an angle to the plate instead of actually kind of almost pushing the ball, which certain guys can do. Other than that, pitching is what it is.

if you acknowledge that most of kanye’s lyrics are his usual whiny self-centered ego-stroking, the cd comes off as pretty solid. not a lot of artists in that area go that experimental, imo. it’s nothing earth-shattering, but it’s an interesting (to me, at least) venture into what can be done from a minimalist perspective.

Free agent Willy Taveras has received interest from Cincinnati, Washington and the Chicago White Sox.

http://www.denverpost.com/rockies/ci_11227465

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

by The Wizard on Dec 14, 2008 7:02 PM CST reply actions

So, Taveras would actually cost money....

I’m thinking I’d actually rather see Owens play CF instead of throwing $2-$3M Willy’s way. Would it be more? Punto got $4M per year, so maybe….

by hitlesswonder on Dec 14, 2008 7:29 PM CST up reply actions

if Willy only gets 2-3M, he'd be a pretty good deal.

i’d throw him into the CF mix.

There are 4 teams interested in Willy. $2M seems like reasonable guess….

by hitlesswonder on Dec 14, 2008 9:16 PM CST up reply actions

i guess...i just keep looking at his numbers...and punto's...it's just that they both pretty much suck.

there is no reason nick punto should be making $4M. none. i don’t think that should be used as a barometer for taveras’ worth.

paying 4M at a market rate gets you 1 WAR.

Punto can apparently play a solid shortstop, as well as Uribe in fact. Supply of such talent is in demand.

Sober, I was appalled at the women. Drunk I was told I danced with them all.

by colintj on Dec 14, 2008 10:12 PM CST up reply actions

last year was the only year that punto played more than 1/3 of his games at SS.

can you even be sure in 168 career games at SS that he is a solid SS? and would you give him 2 yrs/ $8M with that amount of evidence and a career 74 OPS+?

by MarketMaker on Dec 14, 2008 10:51 PM CST up reply actions

by the way, here's the number of games that punto has played each year at SS since his first callup in 2001:

1, 1, 7, 11, 34, 26, 27, 61.

i’m calling horseshit on the deal, and punto as well.

Cashing checks and having sex.

by MarketMaker on Dec 14, 2008 10:55 PM CST up reply actions

Check his fangraphs card and tell me what his skillset profiles best at. I see a stellar defender with no bat. What does that sound like to you?

The math says a replacement level offense for a +5 run SS is a ~ .272 wOBA. Punto’s career wOBA is .294, 1 win per full season better. 1 win above replacement went last year for $4.4M. The Sox paid Uribe 4.5M to be a utility INF.

Are we sure he’s that good at short? No. We’ve got 1/3 of the sample we’d like to be certain, but between the fans (included in CHONE) and the assorted metrics, he consistently scores well. I’m sure the Twins have self scouted that one. The Sox don’t know for sure that Alexei is going to be adequate at short, but again, there’s decent enough evidence and I’m sure they scouted it.

It isn’t the best deal ever, but the Twins are looking at guys like Ty Wiggington right now after whiffing on Casey Blake. I don’t think there’s a serious opportunity cost for them here because their sights are set so low. I will say that a tiny all-hustle type like Punto is probably an injury risk, especially at 32. If he only gets 300 AB, all at short, they still haven’t vastly overpaid.

Sober, I was appalled at the women. Drunk I was told I danced with them all.

by colintj on Dec 15, 2008 1:32 AM CST up reply actions

The risk is that Punto hits like he did in 2007 or 2005

He’s a fine defensive player at 3 positions. But he’ll hurt them if he’s posting an OPS around .600. If he hits like last season and plays SS, he’s worth the money.

by hitlesswonder on Dec 15, 2008 9:39 AM CST up reply actions

by winningugly on Dec 15, 2008 9:45 AM CST up reply actions

and i would say he's probably not worth the money since his "acceptable" seasons

have generally been years in which his babip is well above his career average. of course, he seems to be one of those players who probably has decent “intangible” value outside of his baseball value since he’s the type who dives into first base and, thus, is a favorite of fans and the media alike.

I think one point being missed is that when you have a

2008 payroll of approx $55M, you can’t spend $4M+ on utility infielders. Maybe their payroll pushes $60M this year (he is part of the reason) . . . but I don’t think this is money well spent. I think it is stretching it to make a case he is 1 win above replacement . . .

They have Buscher at 3rd, right?

So, they could resign Harris to place SS for less than that . . . sign Uribe as the RH platoon with Buscher for at 3rd . . . their are other internal options as well . . . Luke Hughes, Steven Tolleson . . . would have to jump AAA, but I sure wouldn’t be signing a utility IF to a 2 year deal. I’m pretty sure there are more than that as well as I just gave it a curosry glance . . . plus, that doesn’t even address the trade market either.

if he's playing 150 games in CF, he's worth at least 2.5 million.

but if we’re just collecting 4th OFs and he’d be willing to be paid as such, perhaps less. but there are plenty of teams that need CF on the cheap.

Really? at $2M or $3M I wouldn't want to see the Sox get him.

Looking over his stats, I’d guess healthy you’d see a .330 OBP and sub .700 OPS in a good year. With plus CF defense.

If the Sox are currently over budget, I’d rather see them spend the money on a vet starter.

by hitlesswonder on Dec 14, 2008 7:46 PM CST up reply actions

ramirez has played one year in the majors. lillibridge is probably a utility player. getz is a rookie who may be a utility player. nix is an AAAA player who may be a utility player at the major league level. konerko will likely not be playing first base next year. flowers has never played above a ball.

i do not see a single player in that group who is good enough to block anyone at any position. this seems like a merit competition that will decide itself.

Cabrera's probably not a good investment, but choosing Marquez/Poreda/Richard is punting on 2009

Which is fine. Sometimes, a team simply isn’t in position to compete. But if you have a rotation with Richard and Marquez it doesn’t make any sense to keep Dye and Jenks. And ditching Dotel would be good as well. They aren’t going to contend.

If the Sox want to try to string together some kind of competitive team, the need to sign or acquire a SP with a reasonable chance not sucking. Cabrera is not that guy I think. Something more like the El Duque signing would be better (Pedro?), there you had an older guy with an injury history but someone who had demonstrated competence in the past.

Giving a rotation spot to Marquez isn’t the same giving it to someone like Cueto. There are young guys that have a good chance to pitch effectively. Marquez is not one of them and Richard really isn’t either. The Sox don’t have the prospects to fill 2 rotation spots from their minor league system.
