OT: Movies of the year, that means 2008 bitches

Star-divide

It's a small city, but I think Boston is fantastic for seeing film of all kinds; there are several different venues that show films of the old/restored/art/foreign variety. I also miss the movie seeing experience in Chitown, particularly FACETS, Old Music Box, and the I.C.E in Lawndale (where I'd see the action flicks with bonus entertainment from the viewing audience). Anyway, here are several films I found most enjoyable, and that would make Larry's censored list for being too communist (in no particular order):

  1. Dark knight
  2. Milk
  3. Slumdog millionaire
  4. Chop shop
  5. JCVD (rocks!!)
  6. A portion of Berlin Alexanderplatz (recently restored version of Fassbinder's 16 hour epic)
  7. Encounters at the end of the world (Herzog documentary)
  8. The other side of the mirror (Dylan/Newport era documentary by Murray Lerner)

What were your favorites? Post away, but if I don't think you're list is worthy enough, I may have to flag you and make this an invite-only thread :p

There Will Be Blood was last year, right?

Because, damn, that was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.
Well, it’s up there, at least. I’ve got a tough “top” film list to penetrate, and it will claim a spot.

But, wow. What a staggering film.

Mmm.

(:P)

Most beautiful movie ever is "The Fall"

Also an awesome movie, not just beautiful

It originally made the film festival circuit in ’06, but David Fincher and Spike Jonze secured a distribution deal for it and it came out this year, so I will count it amongst my top movies of ’08

by jeeves on Dec 17, 2008 4:15 PM CST up reply actions

Saw it. Very beautiful - story and visuals.

The director, Tarsem, literally allowed the little girl to write the story, in a sense. He wanted it to be darker and go into more serious directions, but she didn’t like the dark parts, and wouldn’t act in the scenes.
He was open to whatever she said – he wanted that child’s perspective/influence.
I love how the story unfurls from her point of view. Gorgeous. :)

If you like it (and are describing it is eloquent, flowing terms, just like jeeves)

I’ll look at it. Is it kid-friendly?

(Also, jeeves, you are way too “sensitive” and “artistic”. You must get lots of chicks.)

Sorta kid-friendly....there is one scene that stands out as disturbing, but other than that....

There is the theme of suicide too…so maybe not too kid-friendly after all.

But I recommend it anyway. You’d be entranced, WU. The little girl is a charmer, for sure.

It would work with kids

except when it gets to this one part with stop-animation (i’m not giving much away, just a good indicator of when) you may want to cover the chillun’s eyes. That part even creeped me out a little bit

by jeeves on Dec 18, 2008 12:01 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed. I can't handle crap like that. It was like a Tool video reconfigured in a child's nightmare.

I was thinking more about the part where she observes the surgery/doctor’s room at the hospital – the mom and child….
That was pretty intense.

The way I usually sum up the movie is as follows:

The most beautiful (visually speaking movie) I have ever seen. It’s tragic and epic and leaves your mind spinning

The chicks…they come and go…except this last one who is now my girlfriend :)

by jeeves on Dec 18, 2008 11:59 AM CST up reply actions

I heard about them catering around the girl

but i didn’t realize how much impact she had. I was shocked at how good and natural a performance she gave until doing some further research. I really like what Tarsem did with her

DEFEND!

OK, I have a 6 year old daughter, so here goes:

1. Beverly Hills Chihuahua.
2. Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (he’s dreamy).
3. Camp Rock.
4. No Country For Old Men (she loved Javy’s performance).
5. Hellboy II: The Golden Army

Looks like WU’s life story, mainly the “get off my lawn” part.

1. Slumdog Millionaire (first IT support, then baseball players, now critically acclaimed movies. Ally yourself with India before we rape and pillage your lands with our 3 quarters illiterate population.)

Worst movies that were supposed to be good…..

5. Indiana Jones (the South Park episode was better)

I really, really liked it

As ozzie said, it was a typical Coen Brothers movie, very dark humor.

I think it’s a hit or miss movie, either you’ll like the humor and find it very funny or you won’t like the humor at all and it will lead to this review from my friend “Are you fucking serious? Don’t see that movie at all, you’ll be begging for 2 hours of your life back. Shit, I’ll pay you to not see that movie, well not really, but I’ll split a case of beer with you and you can spend your time doing something productive” (That’s pretty close to an exact quote)

By the way, anytime Brad Pitt was on screen, I laughed

funny memory of black sheep

ten years ago or so, i visited a friend at u of i for one of his fraternity’s big annual parties, and we decided to drop acid early that afternoon and really make a day of it. a few hours and several beers into our trip, we wandered into a room where some guys were pulling bongs and watching black sheep, which we’d never seen. after a few bonghits, we settled in to watch the movie just as it got to the part where the nitrous is leaking into the cop car. but, having not seen the set-up for it, we had no idea why they started saying “ro-ads” and giggling, so it was both hilarious and disturbing. at one point my friend turned to me and asked, wide-eyed, “why are they talking like that?” “i don’t know!” i replied, and then we cracked up. the other guys in the room looked at us like we were insane, which, for all intents and purposes, we were.

ah, college. good times.

07 had a lot of superlatively great films, but i digress.

Synedoche, New York (kaufman is amazing)
Pineapple express (I loive freaks and geeks with all my heart, and Apatows god status lets me see all my favorite actors 2x’s a year. Linda Cardellini please!)
Role models (just an excellent comedy, with a higher laughs per minute ratio than I can recall in recent memory.)

Anyone who puts Dark Knight in there lists . . . .

Clearly bought into the Heath Ledger hype.

It’s a good movie but nothing great by any means.

Story lacked. Ledger’s performance gets old quick (Think LL Cool J licking his lips for 2 hours long). Maggy Ugly is in the movie way too much. Batman is what seems to be the 3rd lead character in the movie. Two Face was not needed. Too much robot voice for me as well. Last I checked, Batman is human. why does he constantly speak in some robot voice?

I wholeheartedly disagree

I went into the movie hoping to hate on it because I thought that the whole Heath Ledger stuff was just hyped up because he died and he would not be talked about for an Oscar if he was alive. However, after seeing it, he was fucking awesome. Brilliant in every way.

The only part of the movie I agree with you on is Batman’s voice. It’s quite annoying really.

Great plot

Great acting by Ledger
Awesome action scenes
Rivoting characters (except for that burlap mask man)

The only drawbacks for me was the length of the movie, Batman’s weird ass voice, and that burlap sack man.

Scarecrow?

I agree the cameo was stupid, but he was a great villain in Batman Begins.

I think it was more a plot device

to just help paint the picture of the circumstances Batman had to face. It took obvious corruption for scarecrow to be back on the street

that Gran Torino movie by Clint looks pretty good

unfortunately no where around here or plainfield has it

Best

Best film i’ve seen Gommorah
Worst film by a mile was Dark Knight – felt like I’d wasted two hours of my life, man that film is a steaming pile of horse muck, I really hated it.

number one when it mattered!

Then you must have loved the end

Because the movie is almost 3 hours long.

Meh

Decent action flick, but the plot was semi-retarded.

I actually think the Watchmen trailer would be in my top 10 list of movies, because most movies were that bad. Remember Cloverfield and how fucking annoying that shaky cam fad is? Worst monster ever, should have just made it a Godzilla remake.

I think I've seen two movies this year

Dark Night (imax, as per many recommendations on SSS) and some other movie that I can’t remember.

So…Dark Night is tops on my list by default, although I did like it.

I’ve been inspired by recommendations above to exploit netflix for a few titles to enjoy during my days off over the holidays. Thank you SSS!

My Mom and Dad went to Oklahoma, and all they brought back for me was this signature.

recommend renting In Bruges

A little odd, but Colin Ferrell was really funny in it.

also I loved Taken

just to see Liam Neeson transformed into an action star was well worth the ticket price. I thought it would be like a crappy Steven Seagal flick but ended up like a euro Bruce Willis kind of thing, I loved it.

number one when it mattered!

Sidenote:

I’m naming my 2nd male child Liam. First being Aden.

Christmas highlight: Finally getting to see Tropic Thunder.

HILARIOUS!!!!
Had little expectations, didnt know the plot, just had an interest….but it shocked me in many hysterical ways. It was like a Ben Stiller movie on crack. (yes, rhythm, I said “crack.”)

...and then some depressed fucked-cake eating.

i just saw it yesterday

it was hilarious…the way i summed it up…role models (which my friend had just seen…finally) was wittier funny and this was just stupid funny, but really funny even though it was dumb

Most overrated movie of the year

Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Agonizingly boring, useless references to present day events, idiotic use of Notebook storytelling device. Also, 7 Pounds was horrific. Really, one of the worst holiday movie seasons ever.

Thanks for the unrec on Pitt's pit.

Going to see “Doubt” today with my wife. Will let you know.

I would rather douse a newspaper in gasoline, wrap it around my penis and light it on fire then relive that experience
