Chone Offensive Projections
On first glance: Carlos is being viewed skeptically, which makes sense. If he does it again, there's no worries. And hes Q! so are there worries to begin with? No. No there are not. I haven't digested much else. They look somewhat pessimistic, I guess?
Also, I don't know if they have been park-adjusted or not. Per Tango it's still in beta and not everything's rolled out yet, for example, Sox pitchers aren't up. Chone's reputation is as good as PECOTA's and Nate Silver in this arena, so the massive grain of salt necessary for James and Marcel need not apply, but I'm not sure what league average is yet and other such pertinent details.

nobody even close. leads the team by 10. if that holds, i see him needing to go to the plate in full armor by the ASB.

I'd be more concerned
if his swing didn’t look so repeatable with the naked eye. Clearly I’m not a scout, but I don’t think he’ll have trouble hitting as long as he is healthy.
It wasn’t as if as the season went on pitchers figured him out or anything. He improved in the second half and he was considered a top prospect at one time before injuries. This isn’t a guy coming out of no where. I imagine the power numbers may go down a bit, but otherwise I don’t see anything to make me thing he won’t be Q! again next year.

It wasn’t like he had a point where it looked like he was over matched, or that what he had done in the first half was a fluke. I was pointing to his consistency as a reason to believe what he did was legitimate and could be duplicated.

Furcal signs w/ Dodgers, contract interesting:
Furcal gets $6.5 million next season, $8.5 million in 2010 and $12 million in 2011. The deal includes a $12 million team option for 2012, and the option would become guaranteed if he has 600 plate appearances in 2011. He also can earn an additional $1 million annually, including the option year, if he remains healthy.
Only $6.5MM for 2009 ($7.5MM if healthy)? Not a bad deal for LA.

Konerko Pipe Dream
If Q does regress, Konerko isn’t a waste of space any more at first and makes up for it! .260 with 28 homers is a pipe dream for Paulie.

He hit .240, and still had 22 HR’s in only 430 ABs. If he didn’t hit 28 home runs and near .260 I’d be stunned.

I mean, if the Sox are hovering around .500 and say Fields for example is hitting 200/250/380 then it might be smart to fill in Betemit, try to contend, and then find a 3B next year.
I’m not sure though. I’m actually happy as hell the Sox made the playoffs last year, and that has bought them a rebuilding year or two (if you count 2007 I guess) in my mind, including this next season.

I'd be shocked if there wasn't a
semi-platoon with Betemit-Fields, at least to start the year. And by “semi-platoon” I don’t mean Fields sits against all righties, just that Fields sits against certain righties (maybe righties with av. fastball velcoity < 91?). Maybe give Fields 40% of the righty starts, so about 60% of the total 3B at bats. Betemit actually hits righties pretty good (.814 OPS last 3 yrs.) and should get a sig. chunk of those 3B ABs against righties.

• The Reds, Braves and Rays are still showing interest in Dye.
• The Dodgers, White Sox and Mets could be possibilities for Jon Garland, who’s two years younger than Burnett with a better lifetime record (106-89) but not nearly as coveted as a free agent.

indeed. and egbert shouldn't be allowed in a major league rotation at this point either.
"They will surely make fewer home runs," Guillen said. "Defense players and worthy pitchers will likely take over the protagonist's role."

Egbert is just another name for [Starter Candidate 5] right now
Basically, If he’s not K-ing 1 batter per inning in Charlotte while posting a K/BB > 3 by the All-Star break, it’s probably time to remove him from the 40-man

Unlike the Law of Masset
[Starter Candidate 5] will not abide by your silly rules.

If Raffy Furcal is only getting an AAV of $10 million, I doubt Garland gets that much
Not that Furcal doesn’t come with his own concerns, but I’d be surprised if Garland even lands as much as his last deal with the Sox (3/$30, right?). I think the truly premium players (Sabathia, Tex) will get their money but other than that I think you’ll see a bit of a ‘market adjustment’.

agreed
I haven’t expressed a desire to bring Garland back, but that’s because his value is the ability to eat innings at a league average ERA. The Sox aren’t in a position to pay for such a pitcher right now.
I’m waiting for the market to crater. I’m know it would be dumb for the Sox to sign Garland now, given their apparent financial state. But by the time Groundhog Day rolls around, there’s a decent chance there are some bargains to be had out there, of which Garland may be one.
