Weekly music thread -- Best albums of '08?
It's been more than a week since the last one, so I guess I'll be the one to man up.
Since it's December and there aren't any albums coming out that I'm particularly interested in the last few weeks of the year, I've been trying to figure out what my favorite albums were from 2008.
The list as I see it right now.
1. Hold Steady -- Stay Positive
2. Okkervil River -- The Stand-Ins
3. Eli "Paperboy" Reed -- Roll With You
4. Death Cab for Cutie -- Narrow Stairs
5. Raconteurs -- Consolers of the Lonely
6. Spiraling -- Time Travel Made Easy
7. New Pornographers -- Challengers
8. Brad Mehldau Trio -- Live
9. Flogging Molly -- Float
10. Old '97s -- Blame It On Gravity
And yeah, the Fleet Foxes aren't on it. Suck it.

Foo fighters? really?
The only thing on that list worthwhile is Flogging Molly. Go back to your site.

I was surprised it made it, too
They haven’t wowed me since The Colour and the Shape. But it’s good music for the gym. I listen to it a lot more than a couple other also-rans.
Dillinger Four’s album is making a run at the 10th spot, but I’ve only had it for a week and a half.

Sadly not that many so far
Nas’ Untitled was above average, but like all post-Stillmatic albums the over preachiness gets boring/annoying after a while.
Q-Tip’s The Renaissance was great. Very underrated album that gets no love cause of all the mainstream stuff out there. Kanye’s album was a C, I’ll never listen to a single song on that album after a month or so. I think Common’s new album will be a great one, kind of an improved Electric Circus.

Agree with you about Q Tip
Wasn’t really a fan of Common’s EC either (or some of the recent Q-Tip either).. Kayne is really hit or miss these das

I’d say 5 solid tracks on it… Jim continues to fight the good fight against the Fleet Foxes

Dear Science is on there, for one.
Maybe the newer Nouns by No Age. I need to give this more thought. I’ve been listening to Beggar’s Banquet and Entertainment a lot lately, along with Dear Science, which I am now very very into. I still haven’t listened to Stay Positive or the Stand Ins. I didn’t bother with DCFC.
Challengers also came out in 2007, Jim.

Damn -- it WAS a down year, then.
I saw them live in support of the album during the summer, so I assumed incorrectly.
I can’t think of a 10th. Ben Folds’ album was really a disappointment, which I thought I’d never be saying.
Stay Positive I’ll be playing for years and years and years. Stand-Ins is my favorite OR album yet. “Narrow Stairs” is great — and I didn’t pick up DCFC’s last album because I thought it was pap.

I think it's been a weak year too.
Stay Positive and Stands Ins are both good, but I think both bands previous two albums (Separation Sunday and BAGIA for Hold Steady, Black Sheep Boy and Stage Names for Okkervil) are clearly superior. I usually love anything Ben Gibbard touches, but I think NS is good not great. Long Division and No Sunlight are solid, but the rest of the album is nothing special.
My fav cd of the year is Animal! by Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos. It got panned by pitchfork (I’m sure they were too busy sucking off TV on the Radio – I’m sorry Colin that bands sucks a fattie), and it’s not as good as their previous album (Dust of Retreat, which is one of my favorite indie releases ever), but it’s still really really awesome.

yeah, thats cool
just not my style, i guess. Anything good scheduled to come out in 2009? I still really like the Strokes, i think they’re supposed to put out a new album, though I’m not sure how much street cred they have left. I’ve heard a bit of the new Killers album too and I think that sort of sucks. Human is like the worst song ever.

I still haven't been able to really get into TVotR so you're not alone
A friend of mine recommended Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s a while back and I was never able to get to it — I’m going to have to give Dust of Retreat a listen in the near future.
And I’m also eagerly awaiting the Strokes’ new album… I’m somewhat nervous as they’re basically my favorite (or very close to it) band and I don’t want them to release an album that sucks. Then again, it’s been three, four (?) years since their last release — I’m pretty sure the new album won’t be thrown together on a whim.

they are a grower type band i think. both of their last two albums took me a bit to really get. but first i get into the singles and then i find other songs and eventually the entire album just ends up fleshing out.

I've listened to Return to Cookie Mountain several times through
and Dear Science I’ve only gotten through once or twice while listening to a song or two more often than that. I like Wolf Like Me and I Was a Lover off of RtCM and Family Tree off of DS (then again, I’m a sucker for anything piano so it’s not surprising that I dig that track) but the albums as a whole I haven’t been able to get into. I won’t cast them aside by any means and occasionally I’ll fire ‘em up again but I haven’t reached a point where I really appreciate them yet.

I'll disagree with you slightly
I’d rank ’em 1) Separation Sunday, 2) Stay Positive, 3) BAGIA, 4) Almost Killed Me.
And I like the Stand-ins better than Stage Names as of this moment, but that’s probably on the strength of Singer-Songwriter, which is my favorite OR song to date.

i'd go
1) Boys and Girls (arguably my fav album of the decade. by the way, that should be a fun discussion this time next year), 2) SS, 3) Stay Positive
I think Stand Ins is really good, but there are only eight songs, and a few in the middle aren’t great, IMO. I think eight of the nine songs on Stage Names are awesome, but that was also the first Okkervil River cd I ever heard, so maybe that’s why I like it so much. Singer-Songwriter is absolutely the best song on the new album and it’s for sure one of my fav OR songs.
My list of best albums looks a lot like yours too, actually. I’d probably go
1. Margot – Animal!
2. Hold Steady – Stay Positive
3. Vampire Weekend
4. Okkervil River – Stand Ins
5. Death Cab – NS
MGMT and Beck get honorable mention.

though I’m not sure how well it’s going to hold up. Girl Talk’s new one was really good. m83’s saturdays = youth is good, if just for kim and jessie. magnetic fields’ distortion was very enjoyable, with a few really great would-be singles.

this sounds like
the peak value vs. overall career argument for baseball players. for all time greatness, staying power is an obvious issue, but for the year’s best, i don’t think it’s as big of a deal, since it’s difficult to predict which albums will stick around anyway.
but albums that come out at the end of a year do tend to get overrated more than those that come out toward the begining of the year because you don’t have time to get sick of them. for example, i really enjoyed the vampire weekend album when it came out, and then throughout this summer (great summer record), but now i’m not so sure i’d put it in my best of 2008 list, simply because i haven’t listened to it in a while. then again, my list wouldn’t be that long anyway, so why not.
as for other stuff, i’ll agree with rickhouse about stay positive and the stand-ins being good enough but not living up to those bands’ previous efforts. but i will disagree vehemently about tv on the radio. i like ‘dear science’ so much i can’t even figure out how another person with functioning ears couldn’t like it. definitely my album of the year. other 2008 favorites are bon iver’s debut and cut copy’s ‘in ghost colors.’ i also like what i’ve heard of crystal castles and ‘saturdays=youth,’ but haven’t listened enough to form an educated opinion.

Re: paragraph 2: So do college foootball teams.
Obviously in a memory sequence the most memorable components are the beginning and end. Middle gets muddled. A truism for all sequences of events. So your point is accurate yet a generalizable one.

Okay...
I don’t know why I’ve been thinking about this all morning…but I have.
1) The future has absolutely NOTHING to do with a list of best albums of 2008, made in December 2008. The idea of the list is not to predict how our tastes will be in two years, or any time in the future. If I happen to make a list of my favorite albums of 2008 two years down the road, I’m sure it will be different anyway because I will (hopefully) have learned a few things, maybe changed a little.
I think maybe this idea of yours has been bothering me all morning because it’s the same kind of fun-ruining arguement this blog is built on. Who cares if you knew Carlos Quentin was going to be good before he proved it this year? Who cares if you knew Dear Science was going to be the most highly regarded album EVER back when it came out in 2008?
2) Implicit in your point, and something I ignored at first, is the idea that I don’t know what I’m talking about. How you could be a judge of my tastes is beyond me. I’m pretty sure you know I’m a White Sox fan and nothing else about me. Have you even heard these albums? You’re basically calling me (someone you don’t know at all) out about some music I’m not sure you’ve even heard!

it absolutely was not implied, for one, that you don’t know what you’re talking about. it’s just a criterion i use a lot. i mean granted one’s taste in music does change, but when you listen to a shitton of music from eras as early as Gershwin’s, the notion of staying power seems pretty relevant. it’s less a question about how your tastes will change and more about how much the music really moves you. VW is a good instance of this. i listened the hell out of that album, but i could also tell you pretty immediately that it had a shelf life. it’s party music that lacks the special whatever it is that draws me back to songs and albums over and over.

not really.
just that you had a list and i wanted to talk about staying power. i don’t really tend to condemn others’ taste. and if you’re posting here, it’s because you give a shit about music and want to talk about it. that’s laudable, not something i’d want to discourage. honestly, i don’t know most of what’s on your list. the stuff i’ve listened to i think is pretty decent. dept. of eagles was good. devotion was kind of lackluster. i didn’t like liferz at all. but i assure you i wasn’t going after your taste, especially since i only know 3 of the 10ish entries.

I heard a small bit of them on a live clip from Gastonbury and liked what I heard — they’re a group from Leeds and are sounded sort of poppy/rockish like The Enemy (UK) and Arctic Monkeys.

At $35 I think I have some time to make my decision… I just don’t know — that’s a lot of coin for me (yeah — me not working last summer is really biting me, but c’est la vie). That amount of money usually gets me two-and-a-half concerts. In any case I’ll let you know if I’m heading down there.

i made similar comments about VW above before seeing this
but one thing that really impacts my listening habits is the weather. maybe i’m weird in this respect, but i definitely have albums that are warm weather favorites and cold weather favorites. since VW is, to me, a warm weather album, i won’t really be able to reevaluate their staying power until the spring. but now, as winter is settling in, the idea of cranking up ’blake’s got a new face’ on the first warm day of the year is pretty appealing. similarly, i think bon iver will be a winter favorite.
of course, the albums that transcend the seasons are the best.
by Ryno on Dec 4, 2008 10:14 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
i actually think there's a lot to this
music and mood are pretty clearly tied together, but given the existence of things like SAD, it’s pretty clear that weather and mood are also tied. so maybe i do need to wait on my VW verdict. apparently TNP transcend seasons, which is sweet.

"What albums do you like from this year, Colin?"
“What do you mean? Albums I like now, or albums I’ll like by the end of next year? Because obviously, if you’re asking me about the latter, there’s no way I could possibly know whether or not I like something at a time that hasn’t even occurred yet. And I have a hard time liking things that I don’t know if I’ll like later on. Things can sound sonically pleasing, sure, but I’m always concerned that I’m liking something I shouldn’t, like I’m being hoodwinked or something, so I prefer not to rush to judgment. And I don’t like to pigeonhole myself into a year, either. I mean, it’s fine if you do it, but given the wide period of time during which recorded music has been made available — it started well before I was born, mind you — I don’t think there’s any advantage in limiting your purchases to a single year, although I’m not even sure that’s what you’re asking.”

As far as some others that I enjoyed but am not sure how much staying power they have, there’s “Hold on Now, Youngster…” (Los Campesinos), “Age of the Understatement” (Last Shadow Puppets) and “Exit” (Shugo Tokumaru).

Between a lifetime of singing formally in choirs, a lifetime of dissecting and arranging the written word, and a lifetime of studying music as my main form of spirituality, I assume you can understand (in the same way that Larry remembers a bunch of statistical shit I could never remember) that lyrics and music on the whole, come very naturally to me.

I know to what lyrics you probably refer since there are some twisted ones in there; but one lyric in that tune stands out above the rest for me... "Somewhere beyond here(hell?), there is sun and spring and green forever."
(sorry if my recollection of the line isn’t entirely accurate, but that’s the gist).
When I first came to Washington and spent the weekend on the Olympic Peninsula, where I now spend most weekends, I could only think of that one line when I saw the rainforests here.
GREEN FOREVER. It was heavenly.

no matter how perfect you think an album is,
it’s okay to have a favorite track from it. if the artist wanted you to treat the album as one indivisible entity, they would present it as such: without separate tracks and track names.
i realize the album is particularly fluid in its transitions and themes, but you can still be attached to one track more than the others for a number of different reasons. maybe you just think one sounds prettier. maybe you think one is more inventive than the others. maybe you identify more with the lyrics of one.
insinuating that someone having a favorite track from ITAOTS (fuck yeah, abbreviations) diminishes his or her credibility in musical taste is the most elitist thing you’ve ever written (that i’ve read). i realize you were probably half joking, but still.
no album is ever perfect. and even if you think so, your opinion is likely not going to be the majority, let alone the monolithic majority opinion.

I usually don't have a sole "favorite" selected until years after acquiring an album.
I start off with a few favs, and then over the years, a favorite emerges.
At one point in time, I called “Oh Comely” my fav…but when all is said and done, “Two-Headed Boy” just does it for me. And it’s a lasting decision.
Sawry, it’s just how I operate with albums.
Very rarely is my initial favorite, my lasting favorite.
I don’t appreciate you penalizing me for choosing just one though. Again, the jealousy over the GBV cover band…..

I saw Julian Koster at a friend's house on Sunday
he of The Music Tapes and formerly of NMH. really cool guy, and obviously super talented. he calls his singing saw “badger”, in case that ever comes up on Jeopardy. he’s going on a cross country tour caroling/hanging out at people’s houses/crashing on the floor in support of the christmas album they released. you can sign up and he may/may not come. it was pretty cool. reminded me of seeing Andrew Bird in a 50-100 seat venue…except i was sitting on a bed with my friends in the living room they converted to a second bedroom.

microcastle wins.
crystal castles suck. alice glass is a whore.
tv on the radio sucked after the young liars EP. they’re just really marketable to hipsters who think they know the first thing about music.
vampire weekend is a bunch of queerboy rich kids from NYC who listened to some caribbean music and said, “hey, let’s turn this into music for middle class white kids and make money.”
i haven’t listened to the new q-tip album yet, but i’m sure it’s awesome, like everything else q-tip does. i’ll let you guys know if that challenges microcastle.
there’s my opinion, and i’m right. you’re wrong. if you challenge my opinion, i will respond with a long-winded, unnecessarily verbose micro-essay that does nothing to explain my stance and only further obscures the point of the conversation at hand.
oh, and you’re wrong.

by reardenmettle on Dec 8, 2008 1:23 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
me too
actually, i like coming up with hypothetical band names with friends. most of them are pretty offensive and/or vulgar, for example:
Intravenous Penis
and
Baby’s First Handjob
but the best formula for coming up with band names is just to take a first and last name of a funny celebrity like this:
Danny and the Glovers
any of you musicians out there, feel free to use these names (for a fee of $1000 per album sold, payable to me).

Because some of you don't suck,
and because I’ve already invited every worthy music-lover I know in real life, I’m offering up what.cd invitations. I have five of them, but I’m also offering them up to another board, so we’ll see how quickly you can reply and convince me you deserve it.
If you’re some no-name commenter who hasn’t posted in any of these music threads, don’t bother. My reputation and status on what.cd is influenced by the people I invite, which means I’m not inviting random people.

by onlysoxfaninboston on Dec 9, 2008 9:41 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
oh, yikes...
not sure I want to give you an invite if you don’t currently already use torrents. Read up on bit torrents. What.cd is a private tracker with over 200,000 albums on it, all high-quality rips (and different bitrates)
by mjthor on Dec 9, 2008 9:43 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Seems like a lot of pressure...is there an application and extensive interview process too?
I don’t think I qualify since I have to ask what torrents is/are…
:)
...and then some depressed fucked-cake eating.
by homesickalien on Dec 9, 2008 9:52 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Haha
I actually think you can “earn” an invitation by interviewing with someone from the site now, which is ridiculous in my opinion. I just want to make sure the people I invite will make use of the site (and know how to make use of it).
Also, a couple of people I’ve invited in the past were clueless, and I had to spend quite a bit of time teaching them how to use torrents. I’m sick of doing that!
Anyway, torrents are great, you should definitely google them and figure out how to use them. I get invitations twice a month, so I’ll definitely have some in the future if you decide to become more torrent-savvy.

High Quality you say?
I download torrents for movies and CDs all the time. Is this any better than the CDs I get from BitLord?
by JoeCoolMan24 on Dec 9, 2008 10:09 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not familiar with BitLord
but what.cd has a lot of rules in place that ensure quality, like including logs with rips that are uploaded, not allowing transcodes (taking one lossy format, like mp3, and converting it into another lossy format). I’m sure a lot of the rips you get on other sites are going to be high quality, but I just like having the trust factor there. If I download it from what.cd, I KNOW it’s going to be good quality.
by mjthor on Dec 9, 2008 10:19 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Hmm interesting
Does this site do movies? I am currently have problems with the movies on BitLord being either weird formats (that my PS3 won’t read), and having licenses encrypted on them which won’t allow me to play them without passwords.
