Around SBN: Knicks 90, Raptors 87: "Shump and Lin wouldn't let us lose."

CBS's Scott Miller pens an article on the White Sox Youth Movement™, and peppers in some quotes from Ken Williams. Normally, I'd just pull the most interesting Williams' quote, but I can't tell which quotes are fresh and which are stale and used to frame the story Miller is trying to tell. Read, and decide for yourself.

Per KG:
Year in Review: Samardzija is a high-profile pick who suddenly clicked in a bullpen role and pitched some important innings in the big leagues down the stretch.
The Good: When he’s on, he can dominate on his fastball alone; he can get it into the upper 90s, and it features explosive late life. His slider gives him a second plus pitch that can generate swings and misses. He’s a big, strong athlete who shows a lot of confidence and aggressiveness on the mound.
The Bad: Samardzija’s performances are wildly erratic from day to day, as his mechanics can become inconsistent, leading to drops in velocity, a flattening of his breaking balls, and serious command issues. He struggled for nearly two years before finally finding success, leaving many to wonder if he’s a bit of a fluke.
Fun Fact: While at Valparaiso High School in Indiana, Samardzija was the second-place finisher in Mr. Football as a senior, was named to the all-state baseball team as a center fielder, and also lettered in basketball while remarkably not missing a single game in any of the three sports over a three-year period.
Perfect World Projection: Samardzija flashes the stuff to become either a closer or a solid front-line starter, but not consistently enough.
Glass Half Empty: His track record is in large part awful, and in his last 10 regular-season games he allowed 10 runs and 20 baserunners in 8 1/3 innings. What you saw in August was a fluke.
Path To The Big Leagues: Barring some kind of disaster, Samardzija will open the year in the majors.
Timetable: He wants to start again, but the moves the Cubs make during the offseason will define his 2009 role.

I'm not sure what to make of that article

The Kenny quotes all seem to be fairly guarded and non-specific. Before ‘07, we were bombarded with the grinder/leadoff nonsense. No specific narrative means he’s not especially sure what his team is going to look like as of the date of those quotes.

Things that are irksome: Acting like a team's top ten prospect list is filled with future MLB players
In Alexei Ramirez (who will move from second base to shortstop in ’09), slugger Carlos Quentin, a healthy Josh Fields at third, Flowers, second baseman Chris Getz, 19-year-old Cuban Dayan Viciedo, Lillibridge, Gilmore and Jerry Owens, who currently projects as the leadoff hitter unless (or until) Williams makes his next move, the White Sox collection of young position players with potential — both near and far — is growing.

Out of those listed Quentin is an impact player. Ramirez might be above average, but his D and OBP are big questions still. The rest are a bunch of question marks at best (Viciedo, Fields) and guys that are virtually locks to not be even average in the MLB. Is Viciedo any better a prospect than Kendry Morales was?

I pretty much agree with you.

But Beckham, and to a lesser extent BA, Allen, Shelby and Danks, all add to that foundation. Betemit is a piece that matters also. And Dye and Bobby are apparently on the block.

Alexei is going to be a serviceable SS at least (say 1.75 WAR) as will Getz, Quentin above average at a corner. Between Betemit and Fields, we’ve got the same at third. BA gives us serviceable CF. So we need a C, 1B and DH by 2010 and the other corner OF by 2009. Flowers is a C/1B type, Viciedo is a 4C type, Beckham’s bat and D will make him potentially viable anywhere on the infield. So there’s a serviceable 2009 and 2010, plus Danks, Allen, Shelby and the Dye/Bobby yield. If Kenny intends to be in contention he’s going to have to spend beyond that, but he’s put himself in position to do so with Thome, Dye, Vazquez, Swish and Bobby’s arb all coming off the books shortly as a result of trade or terms of contract.

I'm actually not that pessimistic about the Sox future

I just object to glorifying/exaggerating a “youth movement” by implying that players like Lillibridge, Owens, Gilmore, and Getz are the foundation of a young contending team. None of those guys is close to being a top 50 prospect in baseball and most top 50 prospects in baseball never become very good.

I know KW has gone +3 on the Rogers scale with the two trades, but Flowers is the only really intriguing player he got and there’s a real good chance he pulls a Daric Barton. I’m not sure if Williams is punting on 2009 or not. Right now I think he’s just slashing payroll without the intention using the “saved” money — and I’m not objecting to that. If the finances of the team dictate moving players in bad market, that’s the way it goes. I don’t think he’s building a team like TB or AZ just stocked with A prospects with these trades.

KW has always tried to contend, so I’ll be interested in seeing if that’s true for 2009 or not….

by hitlesswonder on Dec 3, 2008 11:12 PM CST up reply actions

What about this guy?

Had a 2.02 ERA last year. Gives up a lot of hits, but really knows how to keep the hitters in the yard. He has allowed 1 HR in the past 120+ innings. I think he could be a solid piece in our bullpen. Doesn’t have great peripherals, but he seems to be good at not letting them score, and obviously not letting the ball leave the yard.

Robothal: Risky business for White Sox
Free-agent shortstop Orlando Cabrera had a tumultuous season with the White Sox, sparring with manager Ozzie Guillen and right fielder Jermaine Dye.

Why, then, would he want to return?

Money.

The White Sox offered Cabrera arbitration to ensure that they would receive two high draft picks as compensation if he signed with another club.

Cabrera, though, could choose to accept the White Sox’s offer, knowing he likely would receive a raise from his $9 million salary last season.

He then could go back into the free-agent market next winter, when the economy might be stronger — and the free-agent class at shortstop will be thinner.

The flaw in that scenario is that Cabrera would not start for the White Sox next season.

The White Sox already have decided to move Alexei Ramirez from second base to short. Cabrera might prefer to leave a team that doesn’t want him.

Then again, he also could return and request a trade. By offering arbitration, the White Sox diminished Cabrera’s value in the free-agent market, forcing any team that signs him to lose a high pick.

Move Alexei to CF or maybe even 3B. Trade him if the team tanks, or ride him all the way to the playoffs. The Sox will be a better team in 09 with him.

Therein lies Vazquez’s true value: He pitched well enough over the course of a season to allow the Sox to have big games. It doesn’t matter if he couldn’t handle the heat – and evidence supporting that theory is merely anecdotal. Without Vazquez, the Sox don’t even stand in the kitchen to begin with.

Actually, I was being facetious

I don’t think he’ll actually be good. In fact, I’m stunned that a guy with his track record has been handed the #5 starter slot on a major league team. Injury issues and all, I think Egbert is probably a better prospect still (or at least no worse).

Granted, I was wrong about Floyd and he’s another AFL scouting pickup. But my personal opinion is that no team that thinks it will contend should seriously consider relying on Marquez for 1/5 of its starting pitching. So, I’m assuming that the Sox will pursue another cheap, young starter using Dye and/or Jenks as trade bait.

But I’m also assuming that if no deal happens, Marquez starts the year in the rotation as the Sox seem to really like him.

No #5 on the immediate horizon. Poreda probably needs more time, the “Z” boys (Marquez, Jimenez) not ready/able. Fortunately, as we ananlyzed/discussed to death last year, the average ERA of the #5 starter is 5.6 or something ridiculously high. Thus, just a serviceable guy works just fine until/if Count returns.

SOX FINALIZE SIX-PLAYER DEAL WITH THE BRAVES

The White Sox completed a six-player trade with the Braves today, sending pitchers Javier Vazquez and Boone Logan to Atlanta for catcher Tyler Flowers, infielders Jonathan Gilmore and Brent Lillibridge, and left-handed pitcher Santos Rodriguez.

Flowers, 22, was named to the Class A Carolina League All-Star Team in 2008 after hitting .288 with 17 home runs and 88 RBI. More recently, he batted .387 with 12 home runs and 23 RBI in just 20 games in the Arizona Fall League.

Gilmore, a 20-year-old third baseman, combined to hit .294 with four home runs and 35 RBI in 94 games with Advanced Rookie Danville and Class A Rome in 2008. He originally was selected as a sandwich pick (33rd overall) in the June 2007 First-Year Player Draft.

Lillibridge, a 25-year-old shortstop, spent most of the 2008 season with Class AAA Richmond, hitting .220 with seven triples, four home runs, 39 RBI and 23 stolen bases in 90 games. He also appeared in 29 games with Atlanta, batting .200 in 80 at-bats. Lillibridge was ranked by Baseball America as the No. 6 Prospect in the Braves organization following the 2007 season.

Rodriguez, 20, went 1-2 with a 2.79 ERA, five saves and 45 strikeouts in 29 innings with the Gulf Coast League Braves in 2008. He was named to Baseball America’s Rookie League All-Star Team and led the GCL with 13.9 strikeouts per 9.0 IP.

Does anyone else think that KW is rebuilding this year because he thinks that the division will be terrible again, and any team he throws out there will “compete”.

Also, will the influx of young talent lead KW to acquire some older short-term players like Mike Cameron or Bobby Abreu?

We had a top 5 payroll last year, we’ve made what seems to be an effort to compete every year, I don’t know why we should expect Kenny to just leave a bunch of holes all over the field.

Looks to me like Kenny is setting himself up very nicely for this down market to pick up a few short term veterans while also stocking up his system for the long term. Let’s wait until spring trianing before we assume Jeff Marquez and Jerry Owens are the cornerstones of the 2009 season.

He then could go back into the free-agent market next winter, when the economy might be stronger — and the free-agent class at shortstop will be thinner. The flaw in that scenario is that Cabrera would not start for the White Sox next season.

i don't know what i was thinking (freal)

what i think you’re saying, is that of course oc would want to sign somewhere else for more years, $, etc, but if he can’t get it, he can’t get it, and he’s got to take arb. i get it then. end of story.

i don’t mind oc for another year either. anyway, let’s say he takes the arb, we can go through the same cycle next year and offer him arb, if we hadn’t traded him by then, ASSUMING his playing abilities are still worth a 2 year contract. who knows, if he kicks as during the 1st half, he could increase his trade value during the season that may equate the 2 picks.

by onlysoxfaninboston on Dec 4, 2008 2:35 PM CST up reply actions

that's part of it.

also, the value of cabrera at the deal he would get in arbitration would very likely be worth more to the white sox than the value of the draft picks (in addition to the possibility that the sox would get to try this whole thing all over again next year in such a scenario). unless you masturbate over prospects like wiz does in his mom’s basement. then i guess you’d want the draft picks to add some more variety to your fantasies. ;)

It's "matey", BBS, for pirate-speak.

Hoodie brings the actual “mate” proper usage to the table, and larry is filching it.

Baby is only 3 weeks late – I think it is embarassed by its looks and thus wants to stay in. I have to say, I can’t blame him/her/it.

last year reads a whole lot like 2007 to me. you know, considering it's currently 2008 (secretary just confirmed this for me - she's good with dates and shit).

but i see. you mean last season.

I am sure Reinsdorf was really impressed with Q, Danks, and Gavin in terms of their salaries. “Kenny, why can’t we make the whole roster like that? I say go do it son”

doesn't poreda have more trade value now

before his lack of secondary pitches is exposed by better hitting?

or are the scouts well aware?

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

considering it's a prospect list compiled from performances over a month and a half

he was a tick above average in K rate, and about two times worse than average in BB rate

the impressive thing was the 1 HR in 19 IP. sounds like the set up man/closer that KG’s (post AFL) prospect list describes.

no, the impressive thing is his stuff.

which is why you watch baseball games and don’t care much about what happens in 19 innings in the fall.

"and i'm rating them on their performance in the AFL"

all reports said his stuff was electric. some said the best they saw outside of hanson. hence why he’s ranked there.

it would be a really fucking stupid list if it was the one you think it is. “here’s a top 100 list. cross out all the players who didn’t play in the AFL and post it on the blog.”

i haven't read any scouting reports from the AFL.

i don’t have a subscription. all i have is what i can infer from a list that has literally zero additional context. if his stuff was even more impressive than previously considered, i would not know that.

and, once again, i'll note that actually clicking the link can provide the "additional context"

which is not “literally zero.” there’s a chat, which had already begun and discussed norris, linked right there from the person who made the list. goddamn amazing this internet.
