Week After Jim's Weekly Music Thread: Best albums YOU WERE INTRODUCED TO (NOT NECESSARILY BEST ALBUMS OF NEW MUSIC RELEASED IN 2008 YOU GODDAMN KNUCKLEHEADS) IN '08? Edition
It's been a while...so yeah. Let's move this one up.
Because the previous FanPost wasn't good enough for colin, I thought this would better satisfy his nerdy tendencies that we're all fond and sick of at the same time. Over the last few years, I find myself increasingly overwhelmed and consequently less aware of contemporary music, so if you find my list dated, to not include anything relevant to Sox offseason activities, and not be worthy for Pitchforkmedia or Now That's What I Call Music (i.e., Kenwo the kickboxer), feel free to flag.
In no particular order:
- Velvet Underground - VU, a previous collection of unreleased recordings
- TVOTR - Dear Science
- Brian Eno - Music for Airports
- Lo Cor De Plana - Tant Deman
- Sea and Cake - Car Alarm
- Fred Anderson Quartet - Vol 1
- Stereolab - Chemical Chords
- Fela Kuti - Original Sufferhead
- Amon Duul II - Phallus De
- Lucifer Rising sountrack for Kenneth Anger film
- Goblin - Profondo Rosso sountrack for Dario Argento film
- Spacemen 3 - Perfect Prescription
The first snow just hit Boston, and I'm off to work on a friggin' Sunday to knock out a paper.

I found some great records this year.
These are the ones I’ve listened A LOT:
Gun Club – Fire of Love
Buzzcocks – Singles Going Steady
Public Image Ltd. – First Edition
The Band – Music From Big Pink
Todd Rundgren – Something/Anything?
Pere Ubu – Dub Housing

Oh, they're great.
I had Secend Edition (Metal Box in a non-metal case) for a long time before I really started liking it. I was looking for First Edition for a few years before I finally came across it this summer. It also rules.

by first edition, do you mean first issue?
jah wobble is awesome. i borrowed a bass guitar last summer, and one of the few songs i learned was socialist, because its simply one line, but its so hypnotic.

Yes!
I went and checked Second Edition, thinking that’s the one I had the title wrong for.

the cool was released december '07, btw
but ignoring that, as it’s not the point of the fanpost, as a segue into my list:
Lupe Fiasco – The Cool
Lupe Fiasco – Food & Liquor
i strongly liked ‘eardrum’, but wouldn’t put it on a “best of” list.
I don’t want my beer to taste like fruit or honey. I want pussy to taste that way.

unless from his perspective, the best shit he listened to in 2008 happened to be new music released in 2008

I need to listen to some more Velvet Underground over break. Sweet Jane is a snapping-your-fingers, head-bobbin', sly-grinning good song and I'm down with Lou Reed, so...

Buddy Guy - Sweet Tea.
Excellent Mississippi blues.
i guess if you think a guy who is missing both testicles is healthy,
sure.

Sweet Tea....
One of the first times Buddy really changed the tone of that Strat for the backwoods, deep sound. One of the most phenomenal guitar players ever. Hoytsstash’s personal favorite of all time. Walkin’ Through the Woods a timeless classic. Started playing the guitar 20 years ago because of him.
Good call WU

No shit. I thought I was being obscure.
Big props, HS. I am kinda fond of Look What All You Got and Tramp meself. Hope he plays them when I see him in February.

Buddy Guy was given his honorary doctorate by Columbia, on the day I graduated in 2006.
He performed acoustic at our ceremony – in his cap and gown. It was pretty fucking sweet.

Beirut - "The Flying Club Cup"
I can’t remember if I got into this in the actual calendar year of 2008 (could have been late 2007).
But I like. And their previous release, Gulag Orkestar.

Oh, and another 2007 that I got into this year...

Damn -- I don't know why I haven't brought up this CD earlier...
Mark Ronson’s “Version” is pretty neat, kind of a collaboration of covers and some rock+jazz stuff. “Valerie” by Amy Winehouse is such a great great song — I wish I was able to see that sung at Lollapalooza (not by AW, I don’t think, but in any case…) a few years back.
