"We're not into a big type of rebuilding project," Williams says, "but more of a transitional endeavor where you blend in some young players with a good veteran corps. I know we've traded away a lot of players, but we're just trying to put the best club on the field while staying flexible."

"I wake up every day feeling that there's one more move to make," Williams says. "We'll keep the lights on and see who calls.

"But, to be honest, I think it will be the quietest winter meetings I ever attended. I just think there will be very little trade action because of the economic landscape. Like it or not, teams have to tighten up. You can not give someone a dollar if you only have 50 cents."

kenny found a quarter!

he was down to 25 cents a month ago

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

He used 75 cents. Remember, we said his budget had increase.

So basically

Kenny is thinking the market is going to stall (lets face it, its not going to be fun for the next few years, great time to graduate college) and is hoping these young guys develop?

by 815Sox on Dec 7, 2008 11:31 PM CST reply actions

When I say market

I mean the baseball market/trading… not the “market” which is already stalled

and he’ll have a crapload of cash on hand and a number of cheap young guys to make up the difference

I like that he's doing this now.

We all called for this last year. Kenny somehow pulled together a few small things to get younger and stretched out a few guys stays just enough to get a division winner. He’s getting more young talent this year and will hopefully be able to fill in the gaps with the extra money and have a few of these guys work out. It’s gotta happen sometime.

Oh, I agree.

For the most part I’ve found myself praising Kenny in the past though.

Agreed

I also still think he has a big move or two coming

by 815Sox on Dec 8, 2008 12:33 AM CST up reply actions

Also

With out division the only team we are going to have to worry about is the Twins, we are basically going to be competing with the Red Sox, Rays, Angels and Yankees for the next few years… especially if the baseball market really does stall out

by 815Sox on Dec 8, 2008 12:35 AM CST up reply actions

I would disagree rather strongly

Cleveland and MN are the 2 best teams in the division, and both have strong farm systems. They are probably co-favorites to win the division next season.

At this point, I don’t think the Sox are particularly better than DET or KC. We’re talking about a team that, as currently configured, has Richard and Marquez in the rotation and Jerry Owens, Chris Getz, and Wilson Betemit/Josh Fields starting everyday. That’s a pretty bad team.

The Sox may be building a better team for the future, and the offseason is far from over, but it’s crazy to talk about competing with the elite of the AL right now.

by hitlesswonder on Dec 8, 2008 12:43 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah...

it’s really not the time to compare this team to the rest of the division.

by colintj on Dec 8, 2008 1:15 AM CST up reply actions

Well...stronger than the Sox

For Cleveland, Miller, Lofgren, Wellgarz, Mills, Rodriguez, Lewis, LaPorta…I think that’s pretty good. Granted, a big question is Miller’s arm.

For MN…well, I know less but Hicks, Revere, Ramos, and Swarzak are all good prospects and I’m assuming their deal with Satan for the best scouts in baseball continues…

by hitlesswonder on Dec 8, 2008 8:52 AM CST up reply actions

by larry on Dec 8, 2008 8:58 AM CST up reply actions

I thought they thought no one would claim him because of his injuries

Because no one would spend a MLB roster spot on a guy that physically isn’t ready to perform again.

Anyway, I forgot Santana on the Indians list…so if it makes you feel better, switch the names :)

by hitlesswonder on Dec 8, 2008 9:06 AM CST up reply actions

i don't see anyone on there that i'd take instead of

Beckham, Poreda and Flowers. Laporta is slightly more advanced, but is already stuck at a corner OF spot. Miller pitched 22 innings last year. The guy I like best offhand is a guy you didn’t even mention, Carlos Santana (whom they picked up in the Blake deal, iirc). The others are either less advanced, don’t play premium positions or haven’t performed as well. In the very least, this is arguable.

As for the Twins, their position players are all miles away from ready and they don’t have a prospective ace on the way. All of this is with minimum research, so I won’t say I’m definitely right. But I certainly quibble with the idea that the Twins and Indians have significantly better talent on the farm at this point.

nothing gets ‘em wetter than infrequent postings on the city’s second favorite team

by colintj on Dec 8, 2008 10:01 AM CST up reply actions

Again thats counting that Kenny doesn't bring anyone else in

If he doesn’t then I’d agree that Cleveland and Minn will compete with them… but Det and KC better then the current team we have??

Minnesota was just as lucky as we were last year to be in the position that they were in, if they didn’t have that dome then I doubt they would have been in contention. Cleveland ended up doing better at the end but unloaded some of their talent.

BTW I never said they are competing with the AL elite with this team, I said that is who the future opponents will be and that is who they will be competing against.

The Rays are still young, we will see if next year was a fluke. The Red Sox will be good. The Yankees will be able to spend whatever they want of course (unless the market really craps out)

by 815Sox on Dec 8, 2008 8:37 AM CST up reply actions

In my mind it's too early to say the Sox

are going to compete for anything this year. And the same goes for years to come. The Sox don’t have the young talent of the Rays, so I don’t see how anyone can project them as an elite team for the next 5 seasons or whatever. And the Sox don’t have the money of LAA,Bos, NYY.

The Sox could absolutely be a very competitive team in the coming years, maybe even this year with some moves. But Kenny has not cornered the market on young talent this offseason. He’s added 2 interesting prospects (assuming Viciedo signs) that are not sure things to a system that lacks any top 50 prospects.

Bad reporting or just weirdness?

From a recent trib story:

Another major-league source said talks linking Jenks and the New York Mets never progressed. Williams scouted Mets pitching prospect Bobby Parnell at an Arizona Fall League game last month, but New York is disinclined to trade Parnell, the source said.

Is this really suggesting the Mets would not trade Parnell for Bobby Jenks? Really? I just don’t get it — either this is bad reporting (I notice there’s no direct link made between scouting Parnell and Jenks, just an implication) or Jenks trade value is low beyond my imagining….

by hitlesswonder on Dec 7, 2008 11:58 PM CST reply actions

Its slightly possible

The league knows something about Jenks injury that we don’t? Who knows though

by 815Sox on Dec 8, 2008 12:07 AM CST up reply actions

if the market really is in this bad of shape

in terms of supply, i’d imagine it would be much stronger at the deadline, considering the inevitable injuries, contenders looking for bullpen help, extra bat, etc.

Sox clippings from THT transaction analysis
12/4/08

Atlanta Braves acquired RHP Javier Vazquez and LHP Boone Logan from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for C Tyler Flowers, INFs Jonathan Gilmore and Brent Lillibridge and LHP Santos Rodriguez.

This is a great move for the Braves. They add an innings-eater (eight years of over 200 innings pitched) who is only 32 despite 11 years of service. He can rack up the strikeouts, and despite his 4.67 ERA, his xFIP was 3.96, making this a potential bargain for the club. The 2009 Bill James Handbook projects him to pitch 214 innings of 3.80 ERA ball, whiffing 195. Keep in mind that this is with Vazquez pitching in The Cell, a hitter’s park, so he may do better at Turner Field. Also, don’t rule out peace of mind because he finally gets his wish to pitch closer to his native Puerto Rico, a fact that spurred him to request a trade from the Arizona Diamondbacks three years ago. Logan is a young left-hander who hasn’t experienced success at the major league level yet and probably won’t win a bullpen job.

For the ChiSox, it opens the ability for the club to chase after a young pitcher via trade. Rumor has it they have their eye on Cincinatti Red Homer Bailey, possibly in exchange for outfielder Jermaine Dye. Flowers is the real prize here, as Kenny Williams reportedly salivated over him after seeing him play fall ball. He has questions defensively, but the ChiSox are hoping he is A.J. Pierzynski’s replacement. Gilmore is too far off to project while Lillibridge will compete with Jayson Nix and other retreads for the second base job. He can also fill in as a utility man off the bench and has excellent speed. He could be Williams’ answer to Chone Figgins, who he has coveted for a long time. Rodriguez, 20 and pitching in Rookie ball last year, could be the gem of the trade. He whiffed 49 in 25 innings while walking just 13, giving up nine earned runs and zero homers.
12/5/08

Chicago White Sox signed RHP John Van Benschoten to a minor league contract.

Van Benschoten won’t follow in the footsteps of Rick Ankiel and Adam Loewen, at least not yet. The former college slugger remains adamant as staying as a pitcher despite having baseball’s worst career ERA in at least 90 innings pitched. While his minor league track record suggests an ability to be a back of the rotation starter or capable middle reliever, he certainly hasn’t translated it to ability at the major league level. Perhaps White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper can spin another feel-good story.

that is really stretching it

I mean, seriously, ATL is closer to PR than Chicago but I’d be willing to be there is more PR culture and immigrants in CHI than ATL.

He has peace of mind because he went from one of the largest markets to one of the smaller ones and he isn’t pitching for Guillen anymore. Javy will do well in ATL because it’s the NL and a pitcher’s park. I wish him well and hope the package the Sox got for him turns into something decent.

the reason he wants to be close to puerto rico is because his family does not live with him, they live in puerto rico.
