McCoy to White Sox: "Your Ship Ain't So Tight"
So far, on this chilly Monday afternoon in Dayton, there has been no confirmation or announcement on the trade of pitcher Homer Bailey to the Chicago White Sox (with a couple of minor-leaguers tossed in) for outfielder Jermaine Dye.
As many of you might suspect - because there is no LAS VEGAS dateline on my newspaper stories, I am NOT at the winter meetings. The economy being what it is, it just made little sense for the paper to send me to the meetings for four or five days when news out the winter meetings is so scarce.
Let’s hope there hasn’t been a snag in the deal. My source, reliable and an insider with the White Sox, says there is a deal in place. Or was.

the idea was just to get them in place so i can plug and chug later
also: remember that those are all calculated assuming everyone gets 600 PA. for certain cases, this is a very bad assumption. i don’t really like the pitcher win accounting that much yet…part of that is the fact i only have marcel and bill james. those guys are fine in aggregate for veteran batters, but there just aren’t that many veteran pitchers in the same way. and then relievers? 60 IP? loooots of variance. to illustrate, the Sox normally get a ton more out of the their top 5 than the rest of the league and so just being average takes them a longer way than more injury prone staffs.

Bailey and 2 prospects? Kenny should pull the trigger.
Although I don’t understand why he supposedly turned down Sonnanstine from Tampa. He’s better than Vazquez right now. I’d ask for Balfour, too. Make him the closer and trade Jenks.

THE FIRST TEAM
The Chicago White Sox are on the verge of becoming the coolest team in the game.
President-elect Barack Obama wears a White Sox cap everywhere, and he is not a fair-weather, photo-op fan. At the same time, Kenny Williams defends his title as most proactive general manager in the game.
In trying to keep his team young, Williams has traded two veterans — outfielder-first baseman Nick Swisher and righthander Javier Vazquez — for prospects and payroll flexibility. Do not be surprised if Williams also trades outfielder Jermaine Dye.
Losers in the Ramirez and Teixeira sweepstakes would have to turn their attention to Dye, who has averaged 34 homers and 95 RBIs in the last four seasons. The White Sox would move quickly if they could get a center fielder-leadoff hitter for Dye. Williams could use Dye’s salary of $11.5 million for 2009 on free agents who fall through the cracks.
What happens in Vegas will be felt throughout the game.

Finally, Maddon talked a little about his honeymoon to Europe, mentioning that he was noticed a few times and only saw one (one!) Rays fan while he was overseas. Curiously, he said there was a lot of White Sox merchandise in England — something that seemed odd until another reporter pointed out that the South Siders are the favorite team of one Barack Obama.
I can’t say for certain that’s the reason there’s apparently so much White Sox merchandise abroad, but it certainly makes a lot of sense.

I never see any Sox caps, apart from the one I wear. I see hundreds of people wearing Yankees caps, lots of women too. I’d say %99 of them don’t have the slightest interest in MLB.
Maybe it’s different in London (I’m guessing that’s where he went) they have a big MLB store there so the stuff is easier to get hold of, but I haven’t been down lately so I wouldn’t know.

Williams shoots down Dye trade, for now, etc.
By Mark Gonzales, 7:53 p.m.
LAS VEGAS—"No we haven’t traded Jermaine Dye to the Cincinnati Reds or anywhere else," White Sox general manager Ken Williams told Chicago media members Monday night.
Williams said he spoke twice with Dye recently to reiterate that he hadn’t been traded but confirm that there was plenty of interest from teams, including the Reds.
“We’ll just have to wait and see, and this goes into regards to everyone on our roster,” Williams said. “We’ll just have to wait and see what the week brings us.”
Williams added that recently acquired catcher Tyler Flowers has the ability to hit on the major league level now. Flowers is likely to start the season at Double-A Birmingham.

Dye on hold
By Hal McCoy | Monday, December 8, 2008, 08:20 PM
While the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago White have had discussions about outfielder Jermaine Dye and pitcher Homer Bailey, Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said there have not been recent discussions.
A soure close to the White Sox told The Dayton Daily News Sunday that a deal was imminent and could be announced at baseball’s annual winter meetings this week in Las Vegas.
"We’re not close to a deal and while we have talked to the White Sox, there hasn’t been anything this month."
The Reds are seeking a righthanded power-hitting outfielder and Dye hit 34 homers last year. He will make $11 million in 2008 with a $12 million mutual option in 2009 – seemingly an affordable price tag with Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey Jr. off the roster.
So, the Reds and White Sox could announce a deal this week, re-visit it after the meetings or not make the trade at all.

Manager [Dusty] confirms Dye talks, notes economics as barrier
Economics played a part in the Reds’ trade talks cooling with the White Sox over Jermaine Dye, Reds manager Dusty Baker confirmed on Monday.
During a session with reporters at the Winter Meetings, Baker said talks haven’t been held with Chicago for a couple of weeks.
“You guys were late on that one,” Baker told reporters. “That was a couple weeks ago there was talk. I thought that those talks were kind of off because of the economics and because everybody wants young players, which we are trying to groom to keep.”
The Reds shot down a rumor on Sunday that they would send 22-year-old pitcher Homer Bailey to the White Sox in exchange for Dye.
Finding a right-handed hitter, preferably a corner outfielder, is a primary concern for the Reds this offseason. Dye batted .292 with 34 home runs, 96 RBIs and a .344 on-base percentage last season.
The 35-year-old Dye will make $11.5 million in 2009 and has a $12 million mutual option for 2010.
“Were we interested in Jermaine Dye? Most definitely,” Baker said. “It’s just a matter of how much it’s going to cost the team. The economics, whether you want to face it or not, is a big issue, and not only in baseball, but in the world. Right now we are in an economic crisis.”

more kenny
Over on the Sox beat, Kenny said he’s talked with right fielder Jermaine Dye a couple times in the last few days out of respect to Dye and to dispel the rumors of Dye being traded to the Reds. It’s still possible the Sox will trade Dye, but Kenny was quick to shoot down the Dye-to-the-Reds rumors.
If Dye goes, Kenny seems to think Carlos Quentin possibly could move from left to right. "There’s no doubt that Carlos’ most natural position is right field," Kenny said. "He plays a good right field. We were not displeased with the way he played left field. He played a good left field."
On other topics: "We like what we have in Jerry Owens. Jerry Owens was acquired to be Scott Podsednik’s replacement. He’s that type of player. Brian Anderson was signed, was drafted, to be an impact type player. We have to find out about these guys, find out who they are and what they are. If you put yourself in a position of payroll flexibility, contract flexibility, then you can have it both ways. You can find out about them. At the same time, you can maybe correct a situation if it doesn’t go as planned and then go out and make a deal to reinforce yourself if it doesn’t work out."
Kenny added that Dewayne Wise would be "in the mix" for the outfield.

part of the plan
General manager Ken Williams insisted his latest transactions have meshed with his plan that started three years ago to keep the White Sox’s organization stocked with young talent and not get stuck with washed-up veterans.
“If there’s anything I can impart to everyone, it’s that this is not a change in direction,” Williams said. “This is not a change n philosophy. We started this three years ago, after we won the World Series.”
Williams traded popular center fielder Aaron Rowand after the 2005 World Series, then dealt starting pitchers Freddy Garcia and Jon Garland in successive years before moving Javier Vazquez to Atlanta last week. Williams also is contemplating trading right fielder Jermaine Dye.
“One of my biggest worries over the years is to get an aged club to the point where they are ineffective, and then you have no value in order to get more players and continue the team rolling on,” Williams said. "If you get to that point and have done nothing, you’ve done nothyig with your drafting and done nothing to trade those particular players at a point in time where you can maximize their value, if you’ve done none of those things, you are going to be a club that suffers for a long time, and once you start suffering for a long time, it’s a deep hole to dig out of.
“So, this is necessary.”

You only get so many opportunities to gun someone down when your playing left field. The fact remains, he clearly has an arm, even if he didn’t get to use it.

Well
I’m all for Anderson starting if we add a left fielder who can hit. Owens of course would be miserable, but the more I think about it I guess I could see it.
If we don’t fill the other holes on this roster, no reason to fill Owens spot. Would just be a waste of resources during a rebuilding year. I imagine, if he finds a solid LF, and another SP, then he looks at Owens replacement, if not, no reason to upgrade from 75 wins to 80 wins.

Some interesting quotes re: Dye. The way I’m reading those quotes is that Dye is still very much on the table, with still a decent chance of him landing in Cincy. The more I think about it, the more I think it would be a really nice deal to get another young addition for Dye (even if it’s a question mark like Bailey) while using that available cash to go and find a LFer on the market.

Andy Sanberg has been the best part of SNL for last few years.
The show as a whole has really been good the last 3-4 seasons. Nice change of pace from when it was hardly funny a few years ago.

I actually think Bill Hader is the best
And that one lady who did the Suze Orman impression…she’s good. Hader has really good impressions, but SNL just makes too many skits that aren’t relevant, or reference stuff that was like 50 years ago.
What do you see in a 14 ppg with no jumper that makes one think he will be better than a 26ppg\ 12rpg guy? Is there some kind of magic formula that tells you 14 > 26??

CHICAGO — Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested Tuesday on charges of conspiring to get financial benefits through his authority to appoint a U.S. senator to fill the vacancy left by Barack Obama’s election as president.
According to a federal criminal complaint, Blagojevich also was charged with illegally threatening to withhold state assistance to Tribune Co., the owner of the Chicago Tribune, in the sale of Wrigley Field. In return for state assistance, Blagojevich allegedly wanted members of the paper’s editorial board who had been critical of him fired.
Blagojevich also was charged with using his authority as governor in an attempt to squeeze out campaign contributions, prosecutors said.
Blagojevich’s chief of staff, John Harris, also was arrested.

doesn't seem that strange to me.
some would consider it a better system of checks and balances to elect members of the executive branch independently rather than having them appointed by one person. in this case, i think we can all be pretty happy that the entire illiinois executive branch isn’t filled with blagojevich cronies.

I think that for most educated people, it's a running joke
but since the talking heads say it (O’Reilly and Limbaugh come to mind), much of those who listen to them think it is true. And those who listen to O’Reilly and Limbaugh tend to be the obnoxious jackasses that make the attage “the squeaky wheel gets the grease” true.
My Mom and Dad went to Oklahoma, and all they brought back for me was this signature.

It has nothing to do with
O’Reilly and Limbaugh. Look at WWII and WWI.
Notable French-only military victories include:
1) The 100 Years War
2) That’s it.
The Crimean War doesn’t count. Although the French played an important war, the primary players were the British and the Russians.
William the Conqueror of Normandy (William the Bastard as he was then known) was most likely of Celtic or Viking descent, not actually a Frenchman.
Napoleon was actually bad for France, it was worse off after he was finished with it than it had been. At least it was somewhat respectable before. (Although the French people were better off under the psychopath Napoleon than under the incompetent French royalty)
Indo-china…That was as pointless as the American attempt later on.

the imperialism of France was very cowardly. the civilizations that they actually conquered were very basic and unsophisticated.

I understand now that I may be wrong and that many people may actually believe that the French are cowards.
A bit off topic, but if you want to talk about WWII, I think you should be aware that many non-Americans I’ve encountered have said that the Russians were the ones who really broke the Nazi’s and “won” the war.

I've come back to this because it annoyed me
The French showed outstanding bravery throughout the First World War, and this can be capitulated in many battles. The first battle of Marne is a prime example. In 1914, the Germans made a large sweeping run towards Paris, deciding that it would be easier to take over France that make any large maneuvers East. In an intelligent and courageous attempt by the French armywith small help from the BEFthey succeeded in throwing back the German offensive, recapturing lost ground in the process. More importantly, the battle ended any hope of Germany effectively bringing the war in the Western Front to an early close.
The second Battle of Marne in 1918 was a similar affair, with France (with help from Britain and America) securing the area once more, and dashing the German’s offensive. France lost 95 000, Germany 168 000, Britain 13 000 and the US 12 000.
Lest we forget Verdun in 1916. Germany once again attempted to break the French lines, attacking the Fort which extruded into German land. For nigh-on ten months the French defences held their lines. The General in charge of the fighting in Verdun, Henri-Philippe Petain, was once quoted as saying “Ils ne passeront pas!”. Literally, “They shall not pass!”.
Petain held his word, and in December 1916, the French forces drove the German line backwards, capturing 11 thousand German soldiers and 115 heavy guns in only 3 days. France’s losses were said to be around 550 000, and Germany’s at around 434-.
You will excuse me if I make the leap of calling a total of 220,000 men (which was the original number, before reserves were drafted in) holding a line against one million enemy soldiers for over nine months an act of bravery.
Napoleone Buonaparte was born in 1769 in French-owned Corsica. He was a Brigadier General by the age of 24. Three years later he was made Commander of the French army in Italy, and defeated four Austrian Generals in succession, each with greater armies. In 1799 he seized power from the government and by 1804with the outstanding assent of the electoratehe was made Emperor of France. He was 35. When Britain joined a coalition with Austria and Russia, Napoleon turned his armies against the Austria-Hungary lines, winning the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805. He took Naples the year after and had his brother instated as the King.

I guess Edgar was OK and Thompson seemed competent (at least compared to the last two idiots).
I can only assume that IL state politics is so thoroughly corrupt that it weeds out even semi-honest people for the most part.

What will happen is Quinn will step in and make the Obama selection… Blago will bail out, and impeachment charges will be brought immediatly.

In 1969, Marge Lindheimer Everett, manager of Arlington Park and Washington Park race tracks admitted bribing then Governor Otto Kerner and his Finance Director, Ted Isaacs, to gain choice racing dates and to get two expressway exits for her Arlington Park racetrack. The bribes were in the form of stock. Amazingly, the scandal came to light because Everett had deducted the value of the stock on her federal income tax returns under her own theory that bribery was an ordinary and necessary business expense in Illinois.

So it’s probably Pie, Marquis, DeRosa, and Marshall for Peavy? WTF? That’s an insane steal.

If I'm reading it right, Zell is a scum too:
According to the affidavit, intercepted phone calls revealed that the Tribune Company, which owns the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Cubs, has explored the possibility of obtaining assistance from the Illinois Finance Authority (IFA) relating to the Tribune Company’s efforts to sell the Cubs and the financing or sale of Wrigley Field. In a November 6 phone call, Harris explained to Blagojevich that the deal the Tribune Company was trying to get through the IFA was basically a tax mitigation scheme in which the IFA would own title to Wrigley Field and the Tribune would not have to pay capital gains tax, which Harris estimated would save the company approximately $100 million.
Intercepted calls allegedly show that Blagojevich directed Harris to inform Tribune Owner and an associate, identified as Tribune Financial Advisor, that state financial assistance would be withheld unless members of the Chicago Tribune’s editorial board were fired, primarily because Blagojevich viewed them as driving discussion of his possible impeachment. In a November 4 phone call, Blagojevich allegedly told Harris that he should say to Tribune Financial Advisor, Cubs Chairman and Tribune Owner, “our recommendation is fire all those [expletive] people, get ’em the [expletive] out of there and get us some editorial support.”
On November 6, the day of a Tribune editorial critical of Blagojevich , Harris told Blagojevich that he told Tribune Financial Advisor the previous day that things “look like they could move ahead fine but, you know, there is a risk that all of this is going to get derailed by your own editorial page.” Harris also told Blagojevich that he was meeting with Tribune Financial Advisor on November 10.
In a November 11 intercepted call, Harris allegedly told Blagojevich that Tribune Financial Advisor talked to Tribune Owner and Tribune Owner “got the message and is very sensitive to the issue.” Harris told Blagojevich that according to Tribune Financial Advisor, there would be “certain corporate reorganizations and budget cuts coming and, reading between the lines, he’s going after that section.” Blagojevich allegedly responded. “Oh. That’s fantastic.” After further discussion, Blagojevich said, “Wow. Okay, keep our fingers crossed. You’re the man. Good job, John.”
In other words, the Tribune company wanted a deal that would save them millions. Harris, the governor’s aide, told them that if they removed the paper’s ed board, the governor would play ball. In response, Harris got the impression that Zell had received the message and would do what Blagojevich wanted. The governor was pleased

Absolutely.
Also, the fact that the ESOP of the Trib (that is, Employee Stock Ownership Plan which helped fund the privatization) is basically kaput, the retirement of the employees, while Zell is on the hook for $300M maximum and lives to fight another day, is reprehensible.

I wouldn't be so sure
The Trib knew this was coming, they were asked to withhold some stories in order for the investigation not get compromised. It’s a pretty safe bet that the Tribune heads knew Blago was going down in short order, I don’t think they’d want to be playing ball with someone like that.
