Previously: "Dye trades are 'dead' for now"
by Jon Heyman

LAS VEGAS — A person familiar with the White Sox’s thinking said late Monday night, "The Jermaine Dye trades are dead … for tonight, anyway.’’

The Rays, Braves and Reds are among 10 teams to express interest in Dye. The White Sox already have traded Javier Vazquez and Nick Swisher, and are letting shortstop Orlando Cabrera leave as a free agent.

They’d consider dealing Dye, but surely not for fallen Reds pitching prospect Homer Bailey. They’d need a lot more than that for a middle-of-the-order hitter like Dye.

The White Sox are always one of the most aggressive, creative teams, so it will be interesting to see whether they will utilize all their new-found spending money.

kenny's blueprint?
One National League general manager sensed that White Sox general manager Ken Williams is following a blueprint somewhat similar to what he did before the 2005 season.

When Williams traded outfielder Carlos Lee to Milwaukee, it enabled the Sox to not only acquire Scott Podsednik and Luis Vizcaino but also sign free agents Tadahito Iguchi and A.J. Pierzynski. The GM added that Williams could “bottom-feed” from the pool of free agent still available in January, especially with money freed up from any trade involving Jermaine Dye.

more dye
The White Sox have been relatively low key at the Bellagio. The market for Jermaine Dye may not be fully realized until some of the free-agent options (Manny Ramirez, Adam Dunn, Bobby Abreu and Raul Ibanez) start signing deals but look for Dye to eventually be moved

Indians Close to Deal with Wood

According to MLB.com’s Anthony Castrovince, the Indians appear closer to a two-year deal with Kerry Wood. The deal may contain a third-year option.

by colintj on Dec 9, 2008 1:25 PM CST up reply actions

why exactly?

are they not planning on contending next year? i thought the indians would be a popular pick to win a week al central next year. Getting wood to help a poor at best bullpen would probably enhance their chances.

in terms of dollars/win

i doubt there’s a bargain to be had in a high profile reliever and shapiro doesn’t have a big payroll.

nothing gets ‘em wetter than infrequent postings on the city’s second favorite team

by colintj on Dec 9, 2008 2:41 PM CST up reply actions

true, but if they see this as a piece to getting into the playoffs

and therefore having home playoff games and more revenue… the extra cost for wood would be made up by that extra money coming in. while i don’t know or have a number, i would imagine making the playoffs + hosting even one playoff game is quite a bit of extra money for the franchise

this would have to be the precursor to more spending, in other words?

unless the Tigers, Twins and Sox are also done for the season, the Indians are not a 90 win team now.

if Wood manages a 3.5 FIP for 60 IP, average for a reliever is 4.25 and his leverage is 1.75

that’s about 1 WAA.

by furby2056 on Dec 9, 2008 5:41 PM CST up reply actions

I realize you are using Marcel for Wood's FIP, but

to me that is really high. His FIP was 2.32 this year. I think the bigger issue is predicting 60 IP, but I will bet anyone his FIP is well below 3.5 . . . and I think Shapiro thinks so as well. Plus, look at the upgrade from last year’s stack of shit they had at the end of games.

by jc2313 on Dec 9, 2008 5:09 PM CST up reply actions

i was trying to get an approximate median between

his IP expected and FIP expected, which realistically are going to be in very high variance (optimally, i’d be expressing these as probability tables). it’s a solid signing and all…but i just don’t like the idea of spending a lot of money on a closer. i haven’t even seen the money yet, so yeah. i don’t have a solid opinion on this yet.

I wonder if Dye would bring back one of the Braves’ three potential CFers Brandon Jones, Jordan Schafer, or Gorkys Hernandez. Jones is already in the majors and Hernandez looks like a slap-hitting speedster, but Schafer looks like the best of the bunch to me.

Shafer and Hernandez can

I don’t know about Jones… He shouldn’t be in the discussion anyway.

Shafer’s the best, at least right now, as he’s both good and closer to the majors. But he also got busted for PED usage, had to sit out 50 games, then had a really slow start to AA. Hernandez has ridiculous upside, Kenny Lofton type upside. He has the opportunity to grow into someone with all 5 tools (though I don’t know about his arm).

Josh Kalk: The engima that is Javier Vazquez
Javier Vazquez has some of the nastiest stuff in the big leagues yet hasn’t really ever emerged as a consistent front line starter. With two years and $23 million dollars left on his contract the White Sox traded him to the Braves last week. Was this a keen pilfer by Braves GM Frank Wren or will he be getting the same headcase that Ozzie Guillen has been complaining about for years? Why can’t Vazquez translate that immense talent into results?

Did you know about his (Werth's) lineage?

Werth comes from an athletic family. He is the son of Jeffrey J. Gowan (who led all Division I wide receivers in receptions while playing football for Illinois State University in 1976, and played in the St. Louis Cardinals minor league affiliate, the Johnson City Cardinals in 1978) and Kim Schofield Werth, who competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials in the long jump and 100 meters. He is also the grandson of Ducky Schofield and nephew of Dick Schofield, both Major League Baseball infielders, and stepson of Dennis Werth, who played in parts of four seasons with the Kansas City Royals and New York Yankees from 1979-1982.

Robothal: A's show interest in Cabrera
The A’s, who last week withdrew their four-year offer to Rafael Furcal, met late Monday night with the agents for another leading free-agent shortstop — Orlando Cabrera. The team’s interest in Cabrera, however, is “very limited,” according to one source, “mild at best.”

If the A’s do not sign a shortstop, they will simply use Bobby Crosby as their starter again next season.

I can’t say as I blame him for staying away. Or maybe he’s training a new personal assistant?

This is all very pertinent stuff we are discussing

there isn’t any real news when it comes to the Sox just yet, besides the typical smoke and mirrors. I think we need to wait until Cowley hits the free mini bar at the Bellagio and starts manic twittering.

Believe me. The S-T is NOT popping for a room at Bellagio for Cowley.

He may be hanging around the bar hoping a hooker buys HIM a drink, or throws him a charity fuck, but he’s staying either downtown or at a Motel 6 on the outskirts. Besides, Bellagio charges $10 for touching a minibar drink.

In the mid-late '70's, U of C

had the UGLIEST women I’vew ever seen. 2 best friends were roomies there (Breckenridge Hall) and invited me to a spring break party in 1978. THE drunkest I’ve ever been, hands down, was that night – I remember about 1/2 of it (drank gin for the first and last time). I do remember throwing up as we were driving down the Dan Ryan at 4:30 AM (out the window – I had some class, after all). Sober, I was appalled at the women. Drunk I was told I danced with them all.

Good times.

10:49am: According to Ken Rosenthal, the Marlins don’t expect to trade Dan Uggla or Jorge Cantu at the Meetings, “but they remain open to all ideas.” Cantu has been linked to the Giants and White Sox in recent days.

It’s been debated for years.
The reasons that it’s been talked about so much
Santo has been pumping it up for the last 5 years or so.
The Cubs have an enormous and largely ignorant fan base.

If this were a 9 time all star 5 time gold glover with a 277 Ba who played for the Twins his whole career we wouldn’t even hear about it.

If the guys who played with him and the sportswriters that saw him EVERY SINGLE DAY don’t think that he is worthy, then NEWS FLASH…… He isn’t

An incentive laden deal for Pedro would be something to look at, but the Sox might just want to plug in some of the in house guys at the 4 and 5 spots. Pavano and Penny are other guys that could probably be had for very little.

Taveras going to Nats?

9:23 p.m. — Nats discussing deal for Taveras
The Nationals are discussing a trade in which they would acquire center fielder Willy Taveras from the Rockies for right-hander Tim Redding, according to major-league sources.

The addition of Taveras likely would lead to another trade by the Nats, who have four other right-handed hitting outfielders — Josh Willingham, Lastings Milledge, Austin Kearns and Elijah Dukes.

The Nats have been trying to acquire a leadoff hitter who can play center field, a move that would enable Milledge to possibly move to an outfield corner.

Kenny: no talks with Atlanta since the Vazquez deal
A rumor linking the Braves to having serious interest in Dye on Tuesday doesn’t stand up presently, with the White Sox not having talked to Atlanta since the Vazquez deal. That trade brought the White Sox four prospects, two in Brent Lillibridge and Tyler Flowers, who could help the 2009 squad. Sending Nick Swisher to the Yankees also yielded right-handed hurler Jeff Marquez, who will contend for one of the rotation’s final two starting slots.

Comments from Williams on filling the fourth and fifth starter from within just might have presented a sign of things to come. As the free-agent market settles, the White Sox could move in and add a veteran arm or outfielder who remains available. With the White Sox bumping up against their payroll limit now, even with the subtraction of almost $17 million in salary through Swisher and Vazquez, Dye might have to go or the White Sox will have to get more creative.

A deal for free agent Rafael Furcal has an outside shot at being completed before the general managers start fleeing Las Vegas on Thursday morning.

Kansas City is working to come up with the money, and the A’s are back in, as are the Dodgers and Toronto. The Royals also have been talking to Orlando Cabrera. The most likely Furcal timeline is Friday to Monday, but then, as one GM said Tuesday night, “If we weren’t here, a lot more could get done.”
