Buehrle gets the Opening Day start
and Javy gets the home opener says Joe Cowley:
The way the rotation sets up right now - with a slight subject to change - It will be Buehrle against Cleveland in the opener, followed by Javier Vazquez and John Danks. Jose Contreras would then start the three-game series in Detroit, followed by Gavin Floyd and then Buehrle. As far as the home opener, that will fall to Vazquez, rewarding the veteran right-hander for his 15-8 2007 season.

shelby reports to camp
...
On to Kannapolis last year, he recovered from a slow start to bat .301 over 122 games, with 16 homers and 79 RBI. He became more disciplined at the plate, with a .352 on-base percentage and .508 slugging.
He hit .322 with 13 homers and 54 RBI after the all-star break and had a 24-game hitting streak. His move to center was not an issue.
Lessons learned include his approach at the plate.
"I had a big leg kick at UK, and you can't get away with that now, with people throwing 96, 97 (mph) or their closers," he said. "I had to kind of settle down. Now my swing is a little more compact, and it's actually got me a little bit more power -- a little-bit-easier power."
He also learned to hit to the opposite field, using the whole park, rather than try to pull as he did so often for UK.

Maybe this is why Kenny is so pissed off...
Impact Sports
Somehow, the Boston Red Sox are adding another pitcher.
There was talk of OdalÃs Perez, but the left-handed went to Nationals.
This Friday, was informed Impactodeportivo.com.do, Bartolo Colon has been summoned by the Red Sox.
And that the offer could be better than the White Sox.
So what Ozzie Guillen cancanea, Columbus could landing at the Fenway Park in Boston.
The media has reported many of Kenny's moves this offseason before they were made official -- the possible Hunter signing, the Linebrink signing, the Ramirez signing, the Dotel signing, and the possible Colon signing. The only moves Kenny made that were "under-the-radar" were the Garland for Cabrera trade, the Quentin trade, and the Swisher trade. Kenny is probably fed up with getting scooped on his signings and near-signings. He probably feels that he lost out on Hunter and now maybe Colon because of the mass media.

And another, hehe...
Josh Beckett
Daisuke Matsuzaka
Clay Buchholz
Tim Wakefield
Jon Lester
Clay Buchholz and Jon Lester are much better than the combination of John Danks and Gavin Floyd. It seems to me that Colon would have a much better chance of landing a spot in the White Sox rotation, than the Red Sox. Even if Schilling misses the entire season, the Red Sox have more than enough protection for their rotation to the point that signing Colon wouldn't make much sense for them. What do you guys think?

crede back to normal practice
Crede was plunked on the left hand by Mike MacDougal on Thursday, and was taken to the hospital for X-Rays. All the tests came back negative, but the hand was swollen enough on Friday that Crede was shut down from any batting practice.
After another day of treatment, the hand was noticeably back to normal size and Crede was cleared to go ahead and participate in the full workout.

2009 spring training: pinar de rio, cuba
With the resignation of Fidel Castro as Cuba's president, there's been speculation as to whether the communist country would open its doors to a free market.
White Sox pitcher Jose Contreras, a Cuban defector, sees advantages to returning spring training to Cuba.
"It would be good for the baseball in Cuba," said Contreras, who defected in 2002. "Fifty years ago there was spring training and a winter baseball league in Cuba. If it happens now, it will be really good for the people in Cuba."

Crede's hand heals in 2 days;becomes better hitter
By Mark Gonzales, 12:56 p.m.
TUCSON, Ariz. -- White Sox third baseman Joe Crede took live batting practice Saturday and showed no effects from getting nailed Thursday on the top of the left hand.
Crede hit a home run off batting practice pitcher Omer Munoz, and then batted off pitchers Carlos Vasquez and D.J. Carrasco without favoring his left hand.
Crede did admit to some soreness afterward but said he would be ready by Wednesday's exhibition opener.
Crede hit a homer. Start the C.T.C. (Crede Trade Countdown). ; )

chicago writers already trying to stir things up
Third-year center fielder B.J. Upton chimed in.
"Guys are so excited [because] anything could happen this season," said Upton, whose brother Justin went to the playoffs with Arizona last fall. "Anything. It's going to be fun. It's going to be a lot of fun. I think everybody wants to win and I think with that attitude it's going to take us a long way this year."

Shannon Stewart back to the Blue Jays...
Now, the Jays are on the verge of bringing Stewart back.
Stewart, who turns 34 on Monday, is close to signing a minor-league contract with the Jays. He will compete with Reed Johnson to be the right-handed hitting part of a platoon in left field with Matt Stairs. If Stewart beats out Johnson, he'll likely get 300 to 350 at-bats.

Colon to have workout with Red Sox at Fort Myers
Impact Sports
The Dominican pitcher Bartolo Colon could finally landing at the Fenway Park in Boston.
And from this Sunday, it could be in Fort Myers training with the world champions.
A relative of the player entrusted Impactodeportivo.com.do, Columbus was required by the club.
That would be this Sunday to Fort Myers for a meeting with the personnel manager Theo Epstein.
Still nothing is sure, but Colon said to be in good shape and if they can convince demonstrates Boston.
The man already has almost work.
So is it possible that the White Sox were close to signing Colon but then when this news leaked out, the Red Sox jumped in offering a better contract? Maybe this is why Kenny is so pissed off at the media reporting these rumors? I realize that neither might ever pitch for their respective team but I would rather have Bartolo Colon than Tomo Ohka.
by SSH2005 on Feb 24, 2008 9:24 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
I doubt it
Colon's not some secret project -- he's a former Cy Young winner who can be had for pretty cheap, and there are probably a dozen teams calling. The agent isn't going to keep all offers confidential and then award a team Colon's services; he's going to use them as leverage against each other. Impacto Deportivo is not giving any team Bartolo Colon news first, unless it's of the fabricated variety.
It seems more to me that Kenny's complaining that it's harder and harder to even put out feelers because everything gets blown up, and he has to answer questions about it and correct wrong jumps to conclusion.
It's more work, more unnecessary work. Like if somebody saw you socializing casually with a co-worker and assumed you were hooking up with her. There's nothing technically slanderous or malicious about the rumor, but it's annoying to have to clear the air about something that never came close to happening.

The deal could be made official on Monday.
Kenny wouldn't guarantee Colon $1 million if he made the roster? Wow.
by SSH2005 on Feb 24, 2008 8:24 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
might there be more to it?
perhaps fatolo and his agent believed that the white sox were more likely to give their young starters a lot of rope and the veteran white sox pitchers were less likely to sustain a major injury (as opposed to schilling, etc.).
or perhaps they decided that at least if he made the red sox he would have a real chance at a world series. or that he would have a better shot latching on somewhere else post-boston farm than post-chicago farm.
i just have a hard time believing it's as cut and dry as "kenny wouldn't offer him a minor league contract worth $1M if he makes the team." if i put myself in his position, i would need a lot of excuses (maybe an extra number at the front of the seven digits) to not gravitate toward the red sox.

Will Colon go to the minors?
I don't know, I don't think KW dropped the ball here. Colon was bad last year and it sounds like he's not in shape now and doesn't have much fastball left. If that's true, I rather see the Sox give Danks, Floyd, Egbert, Haeger, and Broadway shots before Colon. Maybe I'm nuts, but if someone's going to put up a bad ERA, I'd just as soon we see a young guy do it.
