Around SBN: Two Minutes Of Thunder Basketball Wins The Game

It's Community Projection time

This is the most boring part of the year. We're a couple weeks away from pitchers and catchers reporting. We're not desperate enough to celebrate Truck Day. And, I don't know about you, but College basketball just doesn't hold my attention anymore until I get to fill out some brackets.

To keep us busy in this terribly boring period of the off-season, I thought we would try our hand (again) at some community projections.

First up a couple of 2B candidates, Danny Richar and Alexei Ramirez. We haven't seen much of these guys, but that's where the wisdom of crowds can really shine through. Links are in the right sidebar under recent diaries. Reply to each thread with your own projection, and I'll tabulate the results in about a week.

Wimmin be crazy, man
"EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The estranged wife of Los Angeles Dodgers coach Don Mattingly was arrested and charged with public intoxication and disorderly conduct after police say she refused to leave his property in Indiana.

Police arrested 45-year-old Kim Mattingly after they were called to the home of the former Yankee first baseman to investigate reports of a person refusing to leave on Saturday, a probable cause affidavit said. The affidavit, signed by a Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Deputy Chad Howard, said she smelled of alcohol and screamed at officers.

The couple filed for divorce in November on the grounds of irreconcilable differences. The divorce has not been finalized, and no further action has been taken."

From MLBTradeRumors
Coco Crisp being signed through 2009 or '10 is an impediment for teams like the Cubs, White Sox, Twins, and Reds - they don't want to block their young outfielders.  The Red Sox may not have a trading partner for Crisp.

According to WSCR,
Ken Hawk Harrelson has been extended for three years. Say what you will, but he is a big part of "White Sox Baseball." Even though I've grown tired of his inability and/or stubborness to embrace some more modern ways to think about baseball(ie sabermetrics, for example), I love him and White Sox games won't be the same when he's gone.

I agree. I can't say I have the same level of "love" I had for him a few years ago, but still...he is the one and only Hawk. I don't get tired of his cliches and Hawkisms, but the kind of stuff you refer to can be infuriating.

by dantesox on Feb 6, 2008 10:56 AM CST up reply actions

I think...
Harrelson was an excellent color man, and could be excellent again if put back in that role.  At his best, he's entertaining.

I've got nothing particularly against Darrin Jackson.  He's pleasant enough, and there are worse broadcasters out there.  But he's too genial and laid-back; he lets Harrelson dominate the broadcast.

The Sox need to bring in a professional announcer to do play-by-play.  That way, Hawk can be Hawk, and it won't get in the way of the game anymore.

as far as color goes? or play-by-play? because I've noticed a difference. His color commentary is "okay". Not great, not awful. When Hawk goes on a break, however, and DJ does play-by-play... I'm not sure there are any worse out there. And I had MLB.TV.

Hawk needs to be relegated to color. DJ can't really do either. His play-by-play is B R U T A L. Even worse than his color commentary.

by dantesox on Feb 6, 2008 11:05 AM CST up reply actions

I kind of had this idea in my mind
since watching him last September vs. the Cubs, and after just reading an article in Baseball Prospectus, I am absolutely gungho on it. We need Jeff Keppinger from the Reds to play second base and bat leadoff. No, I'm not kidding. What's more, it's doable, since Cincy has Brandon Phillips and Gonzalez in the middle. What could we give them? Expand it some how? Check out Keppinger's numbers. He's what we need and it would be a fantastic under the radar, potentially big-time payoff sort of move.

by dantesox on Feb 6, 2008 11:26 AM CST up reply actions

He can also
play third (his natural position) and short in a pinch. He is worth an inquiry by Kenny.

it's not under the radar if it's posted on BP
lordy, so, in the last nine months, the sox have traded for one 2B, re-signed another likely 2B, signed another potential 2B, already have a guy whose natural position is 2B, and now they should trade for another one. the word "overkill" comes to mind.

it's not as clean as we'd like, but, still, it makes sense, lar. I think it's worth the chance...I BELIEVE he could give us 2-3 years of high OBP and versatility defensively at the top of the lineup....and Brian Anderson might be enough. WE CAN FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO WITH rICHAR AND uRIBE LATER. aCTUALLY, this is a bit wild, but I don't think it crazy to entertain the notion of Richar trying centerfield in AAA if he is to be sent down.

by dantesox on Feb 6, 2008 11:49 AM CST up reply actions

i'm not being "smug"
a guy like keppinger is perfect for an NL team -  can play 4 positions (heck, he seems to be a quick learner so maybe more), provide a stick off the bench, and generally be "super-utility man." the reds don't have anyone else who can fill that role so why would they trade him? he's a defacto 10th starter for them. there's nothing we have that would replace that production for them.
2/6/1958: flowers of manchester

by larry on Feb 6, 2008 11:56 AM CST up reply actions

freel is close
can play OF, 3B, 2B.
but either way, i dont see how the sox would want to acquire another 2B.
12/12/07- We'll miss you Andy Gonzalez

by The Deacon on Feb 6, 2008 12:03 PM CST up reply actions

they key is keppinger can play SS
what turns a player from utility to super-utility is the ability to play CF and/or SS. in the land of the double-switch - and you know dusty loves him some double-switch - keppinger is worth quite a bit. and i did a disservice to him earlier - it's five positions he can play.
2/6/1958: flowers of manchester

by larry on Feb 6, 2008 12:08 PM CST up reply actions

the point
is that freel and keppinger are complementary players and are really great for roster construction. because of their flexibility, the reds are able to carry guys on their bench who are largely worthless in the field (like a scott hatteberg) but provide some pinch-hit ability. bench construction in the NL is their counterpart to the AL's DH: you've gotta have something pretty good on it if you want to compete.

not sure how i feel about his case in particular, but this seems to be more and more of an issue every day. i usually end up feeling worse for guys who are sold on programs like louisville by somebody like bobby petrino who wasn't fired but instead bolted for the dough.

carr's "resignation," on the other hand, was not quite voluntary. seems to me that the risk of a coach being pushed out/fired is a possibility that every student-athlete has to face when determining whether to accept a scholarship.

regardless, this does remind us all (as if we really need it) of why athlete should come before student (UM >>>>>> UA).

Carr could have coached forever if he so chose.  He was asked, actually, to coach an additional year by the AD (this past one) when he wanted to retire at the end of 06.  Mallett expected there to be far more continuity between the two regimes (as we all did, frankly), but Rodriguez was too good to be true.  He deserves to play immediately.

While I'm trying to feel positive
about the 2008 version of the Sox (at least the offense will be fun to watch again), I'm hoping someone can tell me why I should feel good about Contreras, Danks and Floyd.

Are we banking on Father Time making a comeback and the youngsters "maturing"?

Without at least "decent" years from all 3 (I won't even mention the outstanding performances that will be needed by the revamped bullpen), 60% of the season has a good chance of falling in the crapper.

Any ray of hope is appreciated, so someone please provide the rose-colored glasses.

"Rays officials were still awaiting details Tuesday night on the legal status of infielder Willy Aybar, who has been jailed in the Dominican Republic on domestic violence charges. A court official in San Cristobal told the Times there was a hearing Tuesday in Aybar's case but did not know what had happened. Appeals court prosecutor Jesus Fernandez Velez told espndeportes.com Monday that Aybar's lawyers said Friday that the wife had agreed to withdraw the complaint, which could lead to the charges being dropped. Aybar, 24, has been in custody since Thursday and could remain jailed for at least three more months, espndeportes.com reported Monday. The Rays are counting on Aybar, acquired last month from Atlanta, to have a key role, potentially starting at third base until prospect Evan Longoria is deemed ready then becoming a "super-utility" player. If Aybar is unavailable, the Rays would seem more likely to look elsewhere for a third baseman to compete with Joel Guzman rather than rush Longoria. -- St. Peterburg Times

Swish's online Journal
Copied from his website

January 24, 2008
Hey there!

I flew in last night from the Bay to Chicago for SoxFest 2008 and let me tell you...it is so cold--negative 15!

The last three weeks have been so hectic; I can't even begin to explain.  The sting of the trade is almost gone now and I'm really looking forward to a new baseball season.  The White Sox are a great organization with great players, in a great city, and they are a team that wants me. I am excited!

But let me take you back to a few weeks ago....Thursday, January 3 to be exact.  I took my mom out for an early breakfast and the last thing I would ever dream was about to happen.  Our food had just arrived when my phone rang and it was Billy Beane.  "Hey Billy....Happy New Year!!!"

He said..."Swish...this is a really hard call to make but I've just traded you to the Chicago White Sox."  From there on everything went into slow motion.... He said it again....and I thought....No way... ....Me....Swish....traded?  I just signed a long-term contract with the A's, I just bought my very first home and was in the midst of moving in, and with the Haran trade, I was going to be the only player to actually live in the area in the off season near my team .... So... why me and why now?

As the weeks have gone by I realize that change is just part of life and being traded is part of baseball.  It's just hard and that first time really hurts. There is so much uncertainty in baseball...but then there is uncertainty in life.  The truth is I'm still living my dream and playing a game I love....just in a different uniform and in a different city.  But hey, it's major league baseball and it doesn't get any better than that!

Let me say how much I love the fans here in Oakland and the Bay Area, my teammates and my friends....that's probably the real tough part.  I've built some amazing relationships.  But, I'm keeping my house and will be in the Bay much of the off-season --  and you better come out to the park when we come into town both in San Francisco and Oakland.

To all the A's fans....thank you for all of your letters and pictures. They mean the world to me.  Please know I read all of them and do my best to answer each one in a timely manner.  Thanks for being patient if I get a little behind.  Please keep them coming!

And to my new fans in Chicago, thank you for welcoming me with your letters and I look forward to getting to know you and working hard with my teammates to bring another World Championship to the Chicago White Sox in 2008.

By the way, I'll be wearing number 30!

he was in the Palmer House bar
at midnight on Saturday of SoxFest.  I'm fine with him partying.  What I didn't like was him standing and talking with Jerry Owens.

Man, don't let any low-OBP stank rub off on you...

I can't say this enough
I'm stoked to have Swisher on the Sox.  If my luck with jerseys wasn't so terrible, I'd get myself a #30 before Opening Day.  His personality and performance make him a difficult player to not like.  If we're doing community projections for most/all of the Sox players, it'll be tough for me to not go with the ZiPS 'optimistic' line.  If there's a Sox player primed for a 150 OPS+ this season, I'd say it's gotta be Swish (or Thme, if he stays healthy).

(Alright -- enough slobbering from me.)

Not that it matters....
but Swish is my #1 sleeper in fantasy this season, at least for me. Our league doesn't count AVG., but just OBP, so he takes a huge boost. I think Swish is going to have a fantastic season.

Let's talk Fantasy...
Not the werewolves and middle-earth kind... but baseball.

What stats do you guys keep? Sounds like not your standard 5x5... see I'm the commish for the second year in a row and I'm looking to mix it up. I want to do away with Wins and Losses and replace them with OBPA and Quality Starts. I added OBP to the standard 5 offensive cats, but I'm considering doing away with AVG and replacing it with SLG. I wanted to hear your thoughts on categories.

Fantasy
I'm really big into the standard 5x5 league, but the league im in does a total bases category, so in reality we are a 6x5.  IMO, i think a 5x5 league with OPS, R, HR, SB, RBI and W, ERA, WHIP, SV, and K's is ideal.

total bases, huh?
That sounds kinda cool. Rewards players for triples and doubles without having to have those categories as well.

I like that.

I think if I did away with AVG people would freak out. I'm afraid people will freak out if I leave out wins too. But quality starts is such a better measure!

TB's
yeah, at first, i thought it would have a direct correlation with whichever team had the highest HR total would have the highest TB's, but that wasnt the case at all. so it makes a lot of the smaller named players a lot more valuable.

Swish's Website
Who's sending him photos?

Just for fun...
Hello to everyone on the board. I'm a long time reader, new poster,  and in light of the slow times before pitchers and catchers report, thought I'd throw a little something out there:

Trade Paul K for prospects, and/or back-end starter. And let Fields have 1st base (keeping Swish in the outfield for now).

I think Crede, if healthy, could once again man 3rd.

Let the hazing begin.

I think we'd all be okay
with that, but it hurts our immediate chances, which is what Kenny is fighting for.  It's not likely to happen.
dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.
