Welcome to the new South Side Sox and SB Nation
Hey South Side Sox,
Today is the big day. We've switched your community over to the new SB Nation sports blog platform. My name is Trei, and I'm here to help you get adjusted to the new home we've built for you. If you have questions or trouble with the new system, post a comment in this thread and myself or one of the team (lovitt, sixfoot6 or odacrem) will try to point you in the right direction.
Before we begin, I want to let you know that South Side Sox is one of the first blogs in the SB Nation family to make this transition. We still consider this a beta platform, so don't be surprised if you find a few bugs or if everything isn't exactly right yet. We hope you'll take the time to report any problems you encounter at bugreport@sbnation.com.
Please take a few minutes to read about what's new below. But if you just can't wait to jump in, here are some quick things to check out:
- Sign up for your SB Nation network account and claim your old blog accounts
- Once you're logged in, press your Z key in any thread with new comments
- Explore your dashboard and setup your profile
- Read the guide to the new FanPost editor
- Install the FanShot bookmarklet and post videos to South Side Sox from YouTube or images from Flickr
- Click the "Rec" button on posts and comments to help other people find the good stuff.
What Has Changed
SB Nation Network Accounts - the Big Change
Readers across all of our blogs told us they wanted one account to use on every SB Nation blog. To make this work, we're requiring that everyone create a new SB Nation network account. In most cases you should be able to keep your old username, but a few of you may have to choose something new, since every other community in SB Nation will be going through this same transition. We tried to be as fair as possible in deciding who gets to keep which name, using a formula that takes into account length of membership and frequency of activity.
We want to make it as easy as possible for you to participate on all of our blogs, but we don't want to encourage everyone to start visiting rival team blogs and initiating flame wars. To maintain friendly communities we ask that you explicitly join each blog in order to participate. It's a two-click process, but it does means accepting each blog's community guidelines. Just as you join each blog individually, you can be banned on each blog individually.
You can claim old accounts from multiple SB Nation blogs, and your new username will be retroactively attached to all your old comments and diaries. So now you'll be able to access all your writings from your single profile page... like magic.
To get started, click here to claim your old blog accounts and create a new SB Nation network account.
FanPosts (the Section Formerly Known as Diaries)
We changed their name. Why? Because we took this major upgrade as an opportunity to leave behind some vocabulary that never made much sense for a sports blog. SB Nation is the network of, by and for fans, and these are the blog posts we make. So we call them FanPosts. When you're at a bar telling someone to check out your online sports opinions, you don't have to suggest they read your diary.
FanPosts are displayed differently on the homepage - we include your avatar to give more credit for the time you spend writing great posts. The new post editor has a WYSIWYG view that provides easy formatting. It also auto-saves drafts so you don't have to worry about losing your work when you compose a post within the web browser. And you can now associate teams, players and games with your posts: these tools promote your FanPosts on our new team, player and game pages - across the entire network.
The new system does not work like the old diary editor. For example, in HTML mode the new editor doesn't auto-create a new paragraph from two line breaks. But it does offer a whole array of new features. Look for the blinking help button on the right side of the FanPost editor for quick tips, and take a look at our full guide to writing FanPosts on the new platform.
IMPORTANT - if you write your posts in Microsoft Word or some other off-line editor, you will get the most reliable behavior if you cut & paste your post into the HTML view of the FanPost editor. And if you do that, remember to wrap <p></p> tags around each paragraph so your text doesn't run together.
Visual Redesign
This one is probably the most obvious change of all. Like other major websites working to improve readability for their audience, we've adopted a fixed-width layout optimized for the 1024 x 768 resolution used by the majority of South Side Sox and SB Nation network users. We introduced a navigation bar with quick links into old and new sections of the site. We also polished a few edges, made some things larger, others smaller and moved a few boxes here and there. More changes and adjustments to come.
Search
We've completely replaced the old search engine with a new one. We're excited to make it easier to find old posts and comments, but we've only taken our first pass on the tools we're offering. We're focused on making search even better than what you had before, so please know that we're aware search is missing key features and we're working on it.
What's New
Schedule, Scores, Stats and Roster
South Side Sox now has all the basic information about the Chicago White Sox and hundreds of other teams. During games you'll see a regularly updated line score, and as the season progresses we'll track team stat totals and leaders. This is just our first step, so look for us to publish more detailed and archival stats in the future. The best part about all this sports data is that we've integrated it directly into the blog so. We now have special pages that aggregate all blog posts written about games, players and teams.
Recommending FanPosts
Some writing deserves more attention and more conversation. If you want to bump a FanPost up to the top and keep it there for awhile, just click the 'Rec' link under the body of the post. When a FanPost receives enough recommendations it will make the recommended list.
Auto-refreshing Comments
You no longer need to refresh the page to see new comments. If you're logged in, new comments will automatically appear on the page every few seconds. When you post a comment, the page will not refresh either. If you want to quickly cycle through all the new comments, you can press the C key on your keyboard. Unmark a new comment after you've read it with the X key. And use the Z key if you want to umark comments as you're cycling through them.
As you use these shortcuts to cycle through comments, press the R key to reply to the current comment. All these helpful keyboard shortcuts are listed at the top of each comments section for reference.
Recommending Comments
Now you can reward those folks who take the time to look up stats and make smart arguments in the comments. Next to each comment there is an 'actions' link that you can click to find the recommend and flag options.
Flagging Comments
To help the moderators on a site, we've built-in tools that let you flag comments that are spam, trolling or just plain inappropriate. Only moderators can see those flags.
FanShots
Many members of the community just want to post that one link, video, photo or quote, but don't need a full FanPost. We've got you covered: FanShots let you share YouTube videos, Flickr or PhotoBucket photos, quotes from articles, portions of chat transcripts, top 5 lists and simple links. If it's a video or image we'll put a thumbnail on the homepage when you post it.
For those of you who are experienced internet hunter-gatherers of Chicago White Sox material, install the bookmarklet onto the links bar of your browser and share FanShots with the community from wherever on the web you find that killer quote or photo.
Archives
It's much easier to find that post about a certain deadline trade or prospect retro feature. You can browse by year and month.
Avatars
Upload an image so folks can see your custom avatar on your profile, your FanPosts, and all your comments.
Network Profiles
Now that we have unified SB Nation network accounts, your profile will be your central hub for all of your activity on any blogs where you are a member.
Network bar
The top bar stays with you on all SB Nation blogs. It's a quick way to login and logout. When you're logged in, you'll see your avatar and screen name which links to your profile. The icon to the right leads to your Dashboard area where you can edit your settings, profile, account details and any FanPosts or FanShots you've published. As we add more blogs to the new SB Nation network, the My Blogs menu will be a handy way to navigate between the blogs you've joined.
-------
There are plenty more small changes and additions we've made, so please take a careful look around and explore this new system. We appreciate your patience and hope you'll help us improve the new platform for this and all the other SB Nation blogs.
And in case you missed it, you'll want to start by claiming your old blog accounts and creating a new SB Nation network account.
SouthSideSox is a community driven site. As such, users are able to express their thoughts and opinions in a FanPost, such as this one, which represents the views of this particular fan, but not necessarily the entire community or SouthSideSox editors.

First complaint?
I actually like what I've seen so far...but one thing's bothering me: the width allotted to site posts on the home page. The navigation bars on either side of the main site content have grown, while the actual space for content has shrunk. It makes reading posts directly on the home page a lot less enjoyable. That right nav bar with the fanposts and fanshots is just taking up too much of the precious 1024 pixels.
Individual entries look a lot better because the left navigation bar disappears...but the right nav bar still seems wider than it needs to be.

We've heard this before
We're still listening and collecting feedback from users as we move additional blogs to the new platform. We may ultimately make changes to address this issue. Thanks for letting us know what you think.

CSS Woes
Congrats on the new site, but the CSS needs a bit of tweaking. I use a light colored text, and the entry boxes are only setting the BG color. So, I see something like this when posting:

Can you tell me more about your setup?
What browser and operating system are you using? And what specific customizations have you made in order to use "light colored text"? (E.g, are you using a custom style sheet? If so, what does it look like?)

Firefox / Linux
I'm not using any fancy plugin to override CSS settings. Firefox just uses the default color of text that the system specifies. Windows Firefox also has a setting in Tools->Options->Colors->Text and Background. You can check it to "Use System Colors," where it then uses a default color based upon the global desktop settings. I *had* been getting around this by manually setting the bg color to be white and the text to black, but more and more 'm seeing entry boxes and such not setting the colors properly (I'm assuming the sites can set these colors).
I posted to the Firefox/Mozilla boards about this very topic.
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=517839&highlight=
I've been looking through the blog-colors.css to try an dfind where it handles the textarea box you have, but I can't seem to find it in there.

Invoking in Windows
Go into the Control Panel, and select Display. Click on the tab for "Appearance," and then click "Advanced." It opens up a panel that lets you change every single system color (text, background, you name it). Now, I set those consistent for my system, so my Window color is black, and my window text color is light gray.
I've also confirmed that it behaves the same way with IE7 under Windows.

One more test
In Firefox, in the setting I described above, there's a checkbox for "Allow pages to use their own colors instead of my select," which I always keep checked. So, check that, but uncheck "Use System Colors," set the BG to black and the text to white, and view your sites. The ones that don't properly set the text and/or BG color will show up wonky.

Looks good...
...only complaint I have and share with others is the width of the comments being shown. Kind of like reading a newspaper column and sometimes that hurts the eyes on a computer screen. Otherwise, I dig it.

So...back to baseball.
Looks like Crede is going to stay, Fields is being sent down, Uribe is going to stay, Ramirez will stay on as a Utility guy, Wasserman may stay (I hope).
Quentin and BA are still fighting it out for the last OF slot?
MacDougal may be sent down if they don't trade/cut Masset?
I like the idea of BA staying up and being the fourth outfielder for the time being...until Quentin gets 100% healthy.

Can we get some baseball chatter started up again?
Bobby, I agree with you on all accounts.
It really pisses me off that Crede has not been dealt yet. K.W. is in a tough spot, but he should just take the best offer at this point. Being pessimistic....Crede has shown that he is not health thus far (I don't care what Chris De Luca thinks) and there is a huge risk that he does nothing to improve his status in the eyes of other clubs. If management is really serious about winning this year, then they would make the tough decision to move Crede for nothing in order to give Josh regular AB's.
I like the idea of Quentin being sent to AAA until he is 100%. There is no point to have him on the bench playing every 2-3 days while he should be in AAA working out the kinks.

Well,
They want Marquis to get hot like he normally does early on so they can trade him. Dempster they are stuck with, and he isn't a closer - so they are plugging him back in the rotation. Not sure if he will hold up or if he can pitch through 6 innings though.
Lieber will be starting in May.

Nah
Lieber is 38 and hasn't pitched 200 innings since 2005.
You don't want Marquis pitching 200 innings...because the last 100 he would have an ERA of about 6.50.
Dempster hasn't pitched 200 innings since 2002 - don't think he will this year either.

I am no fan of Marquis or
his outrageous salary. He didn't make the Cardinals postseason roster in 2006 and he barely made the Cubs in 2007. Now he says he should start or be traded...well, you can have that kind of player and his ups and downs.

It ought to work well in most modern browsers
Including Firefox 2+, Safari 2+, and Internet Explorer 6+.
I just tried out the latest version of SeaMonkey, and it seems to perform similarly to Firefox (which is unsurprising, given that they both use the same Mozilla Gecko engine).
The site seems to load fastest in Safari 3 and Firefox 3 Beta. As I said, we'll be working over the couple of weeks to improve the load time of threads in the other browsers.

"we only put the most basic search tools and results on top of that [more powerful engine]. We're now in the process of improving those. It's one of 2 of our highest priority projects and we expect to make a first release of the next version of search in [a few weeks]."
So we have to live with the truncated search for right now. But the only thing really missing is the ability to search comments. Relevant FanPosts (diaries) and FanShots show up in the sidebar, with the relevant stories in the center (main content) column.

A visual indicator would be nice
Also, I noticed that when you're reading a regular post or FanPost, there are lists of recent posts and FanPosts on the right side, but not recent FanShots. It would be nice if the FanShots list was included on every page instead of just the home page. Also, if possible, an alert at the bottom of the screen similar to the new comments alert, but for new FanPosts and FanShots, would ne a nice touch. At this point it seems to me like the FanShots get lost in the shuffle a little bit, since you have to navigate away from the page you're commenting in to even know that a new one has been posted, much less click on it.
Just some suggestions. Overall I'm really enjoying the new site.

I have the ability to add the Recent/Recommended FanShots
to all the interior pages as well... Wiz and I debated putting anything on the inside (before FanPosts became a default) since it just adds clutter but increases utility...
I was going to put it to a vote... we'll give it a couple of days or so.

Wiz posted some FanShots
which don't look right, and the FanShot page is whacked out right now. Though I assume it could be an FF3 issue.

I deleted the offending FanShots
but you guys might want to check out the chat type fanposts more closely. The rounded corners werent' rendering right, and it was throwing off the formatting of the entire page.

Looks like we have a blockquote bug
at least in the comments...
You can't put a return line inside a blockquote. You have to manually edit in paragraph breaks.
See this post for an example

We discovered that the home team is displayed on top in the box score
Home should always be on the bottom

suggestion
the placement of the 'xx comments, xx new' varies between posts[center] and fanposts/fanshots [rhs]
so when they all end up in the same page they're confusing
consistedcy would be nice

Similarly
On the main page sidebar, comments and recs are displayed on the same line for FanShots, but a separate line for FanPosts.
As a result, the FanPost section is cleaner and easier to see when there is new comments.

edit post link
in sbn1 there was an edit link beneath each post on the frontpage
it was quicker
oh, I don't think having all the buttons, that are inside a thread now, on the outside would be good either
too much clutter...
a single link to an admin page for that post would be enough

I couldn't get the reply
to this comment to nest
does it stop nesting after a certain threshold?

Yeah, the nesting stops after a certain point
to prevent the comments from becoming illegibly narrow.

Do the comments in the wide section have a higher theshold before we break them?
I know the thread we broke yesterday stayed broken, but that was because we hit the default limit. Will the limit be increased in the wide version?

Not yet, but they will
We're going to add a few indentation levels to the maximum in the wide layout. We'll make that change sometime in the next few of days.

space
in this fanshot the space between the last 2 words in the title keeps getting converted to ampersandnbsp when you view it from the frontpage
I type "to be" and it shows up as "to be"
if you click the fanshot and go inside the display is ok

We've got some CSS issues
with the text in the current series box now positioned at the top of the site.
The comments, recs, views aren't really visable.

new message indicators at the front page
(besides the 'red to standout' thing discussed above)
in stories they are like: (55 new)
can you make them like this: [55 new]
make the parenthesis a bracket, easier to search
same for the fanstories/fanshots

Possible feature request
I just posted a quote FanShot 7 minutes after the same thing had already been posted. It would be useful to have a simple check to see if a link had already been posted in a previous fanshot.

I tried using [pre] [/pre] tags in comments
didn't seem to work, can I align stuff somehow else?
ps. I used brackets instead of the larger/smaller-than symbols in the pre tags in the title of this message just so they'll display
