Hey Wiz
for the rest of the week, can we make the Gamethread headlines shorter? Move the stuff after the "--" to the body in some H3 tags or something...
It doesn't look very good on the homepage, and the headlines section is cluttered. That won't be a problem in the future, since I'm pretty sure gamethreads don't get put in the recent posts box, but we still need to trim up the gamethread titles.

I've watched all but 2 of the televised games so far (the first 6 innings at least). I don't really see anything different from BA that assures me he's going to succeed this time. Could I be wrong? Yeah.

no, he's correct
When you leave the page open, all new incoming auto-refresh comments will pop in as new (yellow), and when you reload the page, only the comments added new since you last opened the page will be new.
So I suppose you want to avoid leaving the window open on a thread for a long time and then refreshing (or closing) the page before you've Z keyed through the new stuff.
Does that make sense? This behavior seems to make sense for most users, but now that I type it out it sounds sorta complex :)

Probably not too useful in a gamethread like this one, but it will come in handy for those longer meltdown threads where somebody drops some worthwhile knowledge.

I think...
he'd have to put up a sub-.200 batting average (and a sub-.250 OBP) for about ten weeks before the team cuts bait on him.
Something tells me this is a "we're not trading the fan favorite unless we get something in return" situation.

$5.1 million for 2008 seems like a calculated risk by KW to me...
A healthy Crede could net a decent bullpen arm or a high-risk prospect.
I think that risk is worth taking when it makes up less than 5% of the current payroll. It's not my money.
Now...the fact that he is blocking Josh Fields is frustrating. I think K.W. took the risk, lost, no it's time to unload.

by BoKnows on Mar 24, 2008 4:00 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Problem is...
that Spring Training isn't enough time to show anyone anything, when you're coming off a season-long injury.
Even if Crede was having a good spring, teams still wouldn't want to trade value for him, because of the risk of re-injury and his contract situation. Would the Dodgers or Giants give Crede a low-risk contract were he a free agent? Sure, but they're not giving up talent for him, no matter what he did this spring.
Crede has no trade value, no matter what. He didn't have any trade value a month ago, and he's not going to have any trade value in three months.
We're left with hoping that either (1) he's great, so at least he'll help the team win a few ballgames and give the fans a thrill, or (2) he's awful, so the team dumps him for a PTBNL and moves on. Meanwhile, Fields mashes AAA pitching.
by The Jerry Royster Experience on Mar 24, 2008 4:06 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, that's the situation now...
If Crede was having a great Spring scouts would be singing a much different tune.
Crede had more trade value a month ago than he does today. That's the problem.

by BoKnows on Mar 24, 2008 4:08 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think so...
teams weren't willing to give up anything for Crede until he showed he was healthy, and I think another contract problem like Scott Williamson would be the best the Sox could hope for in that case.

I'm with you jer
If half a season of an average 2b (Gooch) was worth an A ball reliever, what's a dinged up more or less average 3b going to be worth for a year? If Sox fans perceive Crede as being better than he is, then I guess there's no attendance loss, but Josh is an asset and should be treated as such. Crede is not and he should be treated as such.

One Suggestion
I have been lurking on SSS for awhile but the redesign has prompted me to make a suggestion about the new layout..
I have no problem with the new site except that on the main page, I wish the middle section (where all the blog posts actually are) was wider. The right bar is much less important but gets almost as much space as the blog posts. It just leaves a very cramped feeling when trying to read the blog. I imagine other people feel the same way. Besides that, keep up the good work.

Yeah...
That's the most frustrating thing. For the nth year in a row they'll have problems with LHP. But this time, they'll have a guy who mashes LHP playing for Charlotte. What's the marginal value of keeping Fields to platoon with Thome over Ozuna or the last reliever in the pen? Is it a full win over the course of the season? I'd be more upset if Fields could play defense (he's on the Ballplayer's with Ironic Last Names list). But it's still an annoying move. One I'll to my litany of minor moves that bug me:
1) Ozuna on the roster. What's the point if the team already carries Uribe and Ramirez? Every infield position is backed up.
2) Dye not being in left field
3) Thome playing against LHP
4) Not cutting bait on Toby Hall

We are in midseason form
Insert Lefty Here, has had a marvelous day today. 6 innings, 3 hits, no runs and 6 or more strikeouts.
Its like a replay from the last few years. Thank god we have Crede on the team to pop up repeatedly to the 2nd baseman. I forget, he won a silver slugger and is healthy. So when the bell rings he will start to mash the ball and catch everything.

This...
always remind me of the situation where a player is hurting but tries to tough it out. On the one hand, he's tough and trying not to let his team down. On the other, he's not 100% and might be hurting the team.
On the one hand, I want Thome to be confident that he can hit lefties and Dye to be confident that he can play a competent right field. On the other, I wish those guys could show leadership by saying...hey, Don Guillote, I am willing to sit down against some tough lefties (Thome) or play left field (Dye)...without being labeled as sissies, because we all know Ozzie won't even think about it otherwise.
It's one reason I never really dug Cal Ripken and his streak that much...there is just no way that his team wasn't hurt by him never getting a day off to recharge.

Guillen...
is a "players manager", and players hate, hate, hate to be platooned.
If they're benched, they can try to work their way off the bench, but if they're platooned, they're always afraid that they'll be stuck with the "part-time player" label forever.
Look at how much AJ Pierzynski howls every time someone suggests that he shouldn't face lefties, even though he sucks against lefties.
Honestly, I think Dye would try to play left if they asked him to, but Guillen is a big believer in not taking players out of their comfort zone, and Dye has played right field for a long, long time.

Seems like 2 simple conversations.
1. Jim, look at this
Last 3 years vs. LHP. - 209/.325/.344.
2. Jermaine, last year there were 35 triples (guess) hit to RF when you were out there, 50% more than the next OFer in MLB. Roll the tape, Bob (clips of the 35 3B).
These guys are not malcontents, not Elijah Dukes'. They are (I think) great team players who want to win. Show 'em the facts.

I think the plan is...
to play Ozuna at 2B vs. lefties, which I don't quite get (if Uribe's the starter at 2B, he's better vs. lefties than he is vs. righties).
But whatever. I'm not sure what place Pablo Ozuna has on this team, period. As far as I'm concerned, he's completely redundant. He can't do anything that two or three other guys on the roster can do better.

Saw a piece by Barry Rozner
the other day (don't know if anyone has already mentioned it), which half-jokingly suggested trying Fields at 2B. It's incredibly unconventional, no doubt, but it's definitely some food for thought. I'm not saying I'm in any way in favor of trying it, as the transition makes no sense, but it's a way to get Josh on the roster while making one part of our super-second-trifecta (not named Ramirez) unquestionably expendable.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Mar 24, 2008 4:59 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
The money doesn't seem like the issue to me
It's that they would seem to be the team best situated to contend in a couple years, and Nathan might have had more value by turning into a two regular players in two years time versus a part time player (a closer) who might be declining at that point.

Nathan will be thirty-five. There aren't many closers who are still effective at that age.
Rather than throw all that money at Morneau, Cuddyer, and Nathan, I'd have brought Johan Santana back.

Those guys are the exception, not the rule - that's why they're either Hall-of-Famers or close to it.

My point was...
that most relievers aren't really that great for more than a half-dozen seasons or so. Those that are are really, really special.
If you want to lay claim that Joe Nathan is really, really special, then okay, but I think it's a risk.
by The Jerry Royster Experience on Mar 24, 2008 5:21 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
duh
of course it's a risk. welcome back to JRE, also known as charles comiskey, the man who thinks every player should be on a one year contract. i'm failing to see, however, how someone who is concerned about risk thinks it's a better idea to tie up all their risk in one player instead of three. diversification, anyone?
by larry on Mar 24, 2008 5:24 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well...
I guess it's the specific three players they picked.
I'm always leery of giving long-term contracts to relievers (any reliever). I think I've made that clear.
I think Morneau and Cuddyer are pretty overrated.
But that's just me.
by The Jerry Royster Experience on Mar 24, 2008 5:26 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
morneau is overrated
but i don't think the money he gets isn't worth it. he's signed through, what, his age 32 season or something? basically they're paying for the prime of a player who will put up between 120 and 140 OPS+, maybe better. that contract looks fine now and will only look cheaper. cuddyer is a fine enough player who they signed for his prime and nothing more. nathan is a bit trickier (but he's a lot better than signing a linebrink for 4 years - had to get that dig in). if one uses a tool like, say, MORP, that's the only contract that looks not so good. the others are pretty much in line with it.
by larry on Mar 24, 2008 5:49 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe...
I just like Santana more than I should - there's risk involved there, too. I just would rather have one superstar than two above-average, but not great, players and an aging reliever. But that's just me. The Twins have their own opinion, obviously - they traded Santana for less than I would have.

On bb-ref...
Nathan's top comp both for "Most similar by age" at 32 and "Similar pitchers through age 32" is Hernandez. Not that that's concrete evidence, but at least an interesting side note.

Dr. Don explains it.
"We're not looking for lefties to get lefties out or righties to get righties," pitching coach Don Cooper said Monday. "We want our relievers to get both lefties and righties. That's what good bullpens do. We're not looking at them as specialty guys."

Thome's day vs. LHP.
AB1 - Strike out swinging.
AB2 - Strike out swinging.
AB3 - GO 3 - 1.
AB4 - GO 1 - 6 - 3?
Gotta love him but not good.
Really not good for your DH.

Well...
really, winning games in Spring Training doesn't mean a whole lot.
There are things that concern me about this team, but Spring Training results aren't really one of them.

the problem with SSS on iPhone
is there's no Z button! Only a virtual keyboard. But I will not get a Crackberry just to post from my deck.
Otherwise, the new site is growing on me.
Next time, Bhoov, do some research.

Frandsen Fried
This is supposed to happen to the old players on the Giants:
San Francisco Giants infielder Kevin Frandsen ruptured his left Achilles tendon in a minor league game Monday and could miss the entire season.
Frandsen, who was expected to be a key utility infielder and perhaps start at times at second base, injured his leg while running the bases after getting aboard on a single.
The fact that he was expected to be a utility infielder amazes me. At this point, he's more a futility player.

yeah, this is a bug
testing to see if it happens for me below. thanks for finding this--you guys have been a big help.
Now this is a story all about how
My life got flipped turned upside down
And I'd like to take a minute just sit right there
I'll tell you how I become the prince of a town called Bel-Air
In West Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground is where I spent most of my days
Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool
And all shootin' some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys who were up to no good
Started makin' trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
And said you're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel-Air
I'm one of the guys who built the new SB Nation. Please don't hesitate to give us feedback.

Not relevant...but
I got my tickets today --- bring on the frustration with the team.
So instead of a big splash, there were ripples -- enough to change the tide, Williams believes
