Masset off to a good start - 3 runs

Well...
I like Swisher's patience, just letting the count work for him. Then OC ground ball to short, and Jim right back to the pitcher.
Get him on, get him out, get him back in the field.
I'll bring the awesome.

Say what you will about Juan's size
But him even getting to that ball was impressive.
The throw not so much though, but it was a tough play.

Does it matter

Also
Masset pitches poorly to both LH and RH hitters, unlike Wasserman who is limited to a ROOGY role.

Zito
Wouldn't be that great in the AL either right now.
Switching to the NL typically helps a pitcher because NL teams do not have the DH and the pitcher bats. Also, look at the AL right now and some of those offenses compared to the NL.
Santana should have an unbelievable year for the Mets this year and I think Haren will have a great year too.
Zito was one of the worst signings in the history of the game.

Because...
it's kinda choppy for me and was wondering if it was just my crappy campus connection.
My Cubs fan friend and I played the Hawk/DJ drinking game during the Cubs/White Sox game 2 weeks ago. We threw in some extra rules... such as whenever the opposing team scored we had to drink, and whenever an inning passed that our team did not score we had to drink. Any Hawkism resulted in a drink, and any reference to Yaz resulted in having to down a beer.
Home Runs were deadly. As you had to drink for every Stretch!, the Put it on the board!, and the runs scored.
We were tanked.

two points
I don't buy that spring stats don't mean zilch -
1. If you are a good hitter then you should be able to hit no matter what time of year. Especially against guys who are not everyday major leaguers trying to make a team. If anything, they should have higher avgs. Looking awful at plate in spring or in season still is looking awful.
2. Normally, I would agree. But given the atrocious offense last year, it doesn't make you feel any better that this year would be different if the numbers are still down.

That... and...
1) The players haven't seen pitching in 4-5 months.
2) Small sample size.
3) The people guaranteed of a roster spot don't care whether they get a good pitch to hit, they are either experimenting or just trying to get their swings in.

If you believe that ST stats matter,
or are fair predictors of season-long output, then you expect Craig Counsell to hit somewhere around .485 for the season.
The at-bats that regulars get during ST equate to roughly 15-20 4-AB regular season games, or about 10% of a season. People slump, people get hot.
by onthemark12 on Mar 27, 2008 5:04 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
if spring dont mean zilch
then why is there that stat floating around that no team with a losing record in spring has made playoffs? meanwhile, someone posted that '05 ST the team led almost every game into the late innings
its an indication of the ability of the individual/team. does it translate to respective failure/success either way? no, not 100%. is it an indication? yes
by The Scoper on Mar 27, 2008 4:32 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
floating stats like that need to be swatted down

exactly. ST stats hold no predictive value.
The only thing to glean is in watching mechanics, but that's hardly an easy task.

Pooper Scooper
Phillies 11-18 in '07 and made the playoffs
Oakland 15-17 in '06 and made the playoffs
Sox 12-18 in '05 and won the WS
Are you seeing a pattern yet? ST records and stats mean NOTHING! Absolutely nothing!

nothing to do with spring training performance......

but you were definitely wrong about ST records correlating to regular season. in addition to the others, the year the sox won the world series 5 of the 8 playoff teams had losing records in march.

it's one thing to say...i wish that swisher, etc. hit better in spring training because then i would be happy and be able to dream of unicorns and the tooth fairy at night...and quite another to say...i wish swisher, etc. hit better in spring training because the fact that they haven't means they won't hit well during the season.

Mid-season form
May I just say, gentleman, that it does appear many of you are already in mid-season form.
Plenty of lol comments - I suppose Masset pitching and a Moby Dick reference will do that for you. A refreshing from the recent bickering none the less. Many thanks!

I am glad we drafted Carrie Schueler v 2.0
Oney's college stats.
He hit .227 in 2006, with a .293 OBP, and he slugged (LOL) .253. WOW. He had 26 Errors with a .882 fielding percentage.
Carrie says hello to Oney
Here is a quote from his time in a collegiate summer league.
He's a sophomore from North Park University in Chicago. He hit .190 and committed 23 errors in 47 games as a second baseman for the Thunder Bay Border Cats (Ontario, Canada) of the North Woods League in 2006 (the NWL is a collegiate summer league).

Do you know how bad North Park is at baseball? Absolutely terrible...
In fact, they are horrible at every sport in that conference. You could have drafted every player on the team that won the CCIW that year and they would have been better than Oney.

Had the pleasure of facing them once in college
I faced them once back in college. I went 5 innings, gave up one hit, and struck out 14. Now granted I was cheating by making the ball move, and changing speeds. But I am certain that I could of just pumped in fastball after fastball and would of gotten a similar result. But watching them fall over when I broke off a breaking pitch after 2 strikes was too much fun. The only teams worse than they were that I had faced, Trinity Christian in Palos Heights and Concordia.

Yea, I played football at IWU. Nothing like facing North Park. They always made you feel like an All-Star.

Cloudy with a couple of showers and thunderstorms possible.
Was that a ground out to 2nd for Owens?

Just heard it from Hawk
"If this is the first spring training game, you have missed Jerry Owens. When he was in there he picked up from where he left off last year where he showed that he is a solid major leaguer. He had a slight tear of the groin, then came back. And he I tell you covered every possible part of the centerfield ground out there. With him in the leadoff spot this is a completely different and dynamic offense"
Okay I did throw up after I heard it on the replay broadcast. That god jessie has speed. Speed doesnt slump.

Same stuff they spewed with pablo/pods/erstad out
You know DJ, this team really misses (insert name), he's that spark that just gets the team going... blah blah blah
So instead of a big splash, there were ripples -- enough to change the tide, Williams believes

This team misses talent...
Actually if you imagine substituting "talent" for "Jerry Owens" Hawk's paean becomes much more listenable:

No doubt
if the rose colored glasses were taken off for alot of people. They'd face the fact that this team has'nt been dynamic for the last 1.5 years. I consider a team that can't mount an attack of 3 to 5 runs in an inning, on a somewhat consistent basis. A less than dynamic team. The only time this team is somewhat dynamic is when Thome's hot and he's batting against a RH'd pitcher!

the no doubt I've reached is beyond any no doubt ever recorded. Seriously tho, i hope this team has a good year for Kenny Williams sake. But the gap between the wannabee's and the hasbeens is just too great! And the solid athletic position players to fill the gap, are sorely missing!
