It's just one game...
...but already it feels like our offense will be better than last year. Swisher/Cabrera at the top of the order looks like it works really well.
I'd like to see the replay on that one
I, too, was taught karate by an old asian man who was the maintenance man in my building.
Ack.
Fun game though. Come on bullpen!

Good job...

No way they do this last year.

Still in shock about Masset
what a terrific outing. He really stepped up today.
Boone dealing too.

this is a fun team to watch
Swish and Cabrera have done a great job getting on base so far. Uribe and Crede look lost.

no kidding...but I'll deal, I guess

Hoo boy...
I don't know if I have EVER seen Hafner take such a weak swing. He looked completely fooled there
lol
That was hilarious. I don't even think he moved the bat until it was in AJ's glove.

What the hell is going on here.
Our bullpen is getting outs, and were hitting Relief pitching. One actual bad call away from being in the lead right now, feeling much better about taking a half day.

Alright.
We've gotta win this thing. I've up and pacing around the apartment for the last hour. I haven't actually cared since last May!

Crede can't score on the double
but it really looked like Michaels was gonna get that one.
AIM: SouthSideCheat
Good baserunning?
Farmer and Stone say yes, but couldn't he have gotten farther down the line. Even if the ball is caught, Michaels is running toward the left-center wall. Crede has time, in that case, to get back. But, caution makes sense here.
Oh yes!
Here we go!!!
What a way to start the year with a win like this!
I can't handle too many of these kinda games though

Farmer mans up
Says it was the right call because OC went after him with his hands. I think he's probably right.
Okay...
someone's going to have to give an update.
Gameday currently has runners on second and third, and one intentional ball to Swisher.
by The Jerry Royster Experience on Mar 31, 2008 4:55 PM CDT reply actions
Update
Swisher walked. OC slow chopper, throw home if off-line. The catcher pulled off plate swipes at Crede coming home and misses the shoulder. Umpire allows himself to be screened and calls the runner out. Then Thome batting with bases loaded and one out. Ground ball to second. Cabrera thrown out at second and then Thome called out on runner's interference. Very controversial call.
Wild.
This is just unbelievable. We have to win the f*cking game.

Doesn't make the other two calls legit.
We've still had two+ runs taken away from us and two outs that we shouldn't have.

What the hell
He got the base, and although his hands were up, they in no way effected the play.

This is where it all falls apart. The team is reacting badly to the calls. Regardless of if the calls are right or wrong the team can't get overly emotional.

the ump
will say Ocab reached out but that's bs...Ozzie shouda got him self run. I guess now we'll see if our new bul pen can hold them.
For those without a view:
Bases loaded, no out. OCab hits a grounder that they go home to get Crede. Bad throw goes high and Crede sneaks in under. He had no business scoring, so the ump just called him out. He was in bad position to see. Then OCab gets called for interference at second on a could be double play. But it was another terrible call. We should've scored on each of those plays.

by Toonderstrook on Mar 31, 2008 5:05 PM CDT up reply actions
It was close
But the ump was out of position, the catcher was between the ump and the runner and it he got the tag down so from his angle it looked like he got him - but he didn't
well, then that ain't the right call as SSH says.
Well, Kenny, I have to hand it to you. It's the best mindfuck yet.

yeah

Any one of those calls...
I could see going either way.
I think what is hard to swallow is that *all three* went against the Sox. You'd think at least one of them would have gone our way.
Meh.
Sometimes the umpire calls things in your favor, sometimes he doesn't. I don't get too worked up about it.
Frankly, I'm just shocked that the team is still in this game.
by The Jerry Royster Experience on Mar 31, 2008 5:04 PM CDT reply actions
The call at 2nd
was correct. Throwing your arms into the fielder when he is clearly off the bag is runner interference. It isn't always called though. If you go in to him with your feet it can be called a natural slide to the bag and it's legit. Nothing natural about trying to grab the fielder by the leg as he throws.
"natural" is the last refuge of the inexact
dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.
Call at 2nd: They leave it to the ump to decide
Rule text:
Rule 7.08(b) Comment: A runner who is adjudged to have hindered a fielder who is attempting to make a play on a batted ball is out whether it was intentional or not.
If, however, the runner has contact with a legally occupied base when he hinders the fielder, he shall not be called out unless, in the umpire’s judgment, such hindrance, whether it occurs on fair or foul territory, is intentional. If the umpire declares the hindrance intentional, the following penalty shall apply: With less than two out, the umpire shall declare both the runner and batter out. With two out, the umpire shall declare the batter out.
the irony being
that when trying to break up the double play, all hindrances are intentional.
I, too, was taught karate by an old asian man who was the maintenance man in my building.
Arguing about two close calls when...
our hitters couldn't hit anything but infield choppers with the bases loaded and no outs it ridiculous.
Blame the hitters...
Two infield choppers with the fucking bases loaded and no outs is absolutely pathetic.
Still, the other team should be forced to execute their defense.
In one case they didn't and in the other case it was at least up for debate (though I think they made the right call).
7 runs.

dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.
inconclusive
on one of those views, it appeared to me that he may have been tagged, albeit barely, on his right side.
And if we play well enough
there is no reason to even have umpires out there!
But back in reality we still need them to make the right calls.
I, too, was taught karate by an old asian man who was the maintenance man in my building.
well the starter gave up 7 runs in the second
and they were able to hold it until now.

Bases loaded and 0 out, and they can't get a ball out of the infield.
It sucks that the umps blew those calls but you need to execute in those kind of situations to win.

Hawk keeps comparing the Blake's slide to OCab's
Which I find absurd. OCab was right on the center of the bag when Blake hit him. A. Cabrerra was quite a bit off to the centerfield side of the bag and OCab definitely had to reach over to make contact.

Maybe the umps blew some calls,
but as others have said (or in some people's cases, beaten to death), there is no excuse for not being able to get a ball out of the infield with the bases loaded and nobody out. Also, when you give up six two-out runs you really don't give yourself the best chance to win.

These kinds of games are going to be pretty common this year
Looking at the AL, there aren't many reliable pitching staffs. Makes for fun games, albeit tons more heart-wrenching losses like this one.

Especially disappointing that one of them came from OCab
Since we were sold on his ability to "handle the bat"
Don't forget missed defensive plays in the 2nd inning...
I mean, really, we had no business being in this game once we gave up a 7 spot.
But we were because the offense, even with the missed opportunities, still produced a lot of runs. So if there's a silver lining, I think that is it.
that's the spirit...
i think 161-1 and would probably still win the division.

This game
was an embarrassment to the MLB. Whoever said this looked liked an NBA game is absolutely right. These umps had money on this game... that is why they were squeezing Buehrle early. 3 horrendous calls on top of it and about 14 pitches that were strikes but called balls. If I was Ozzie I would drop a copy of this game off at their hotel rooms for them to go back over. Baseball NEEDS INSTANT REPLAY! If you demand it and your wrong you get an out. 2 instant replays per team per game.

No I am serious
They say it will slow the game down too much but really it is more beneficial to the fans that they get to watch a game called fairly. Today is a perfect example why managers are pining for it. At least give the umpires time to meet and discuss rules before making a hard headed calls. What a great game though... The game really felt like it was the last game of the season and we were in a tie for first with the tribe. I know OCab fucked up bad today but I really feel like he was just trying to hard... once he settles down watch out this guy is a true gamer regardless of his avg. w/ bases loaded!

[JC]:
Pitching coach Don Cooper watched his starters post a 4.73 ERA this spring. Considering the collateral damage caused to his staff in Tucson in the past, he was feeling good about where the group is heading into Opening Day. ''If I look at everybody individually, I want to say each guy seems to have had one poor start, maybe other than [Mark] Buehrle,'' Cooper said. ''They got all the work down here that they needed to get; the innings and the pitches are where they need to be. And now the bell rings, and the stuff will count.''
Mak had his bad start today...
