It's just one game...

...but already it feels like our offense will be better than last year. Swisher/Cabrera at the top of the order looks like it works really well.

I'd like to see the replay on that one

this is a fun team to watch

Swish and Cabrera have done a great job getting on base so far. Uribe and Crede look lost.

Farmer and Stone say yes, but couldn't he have gotten farther down the line. Even if the ball is caught, Michaels is running toward the left-center wall. Crede has time, in that case, to get back. But, caution makes sense here.

by Landfill on Mar 31, 2008 4:55 PM CDT reply actions

Okay...

someone's going to have to give an update.

Gameday currently has runners on second and third, and one intentional ball to Swisher.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Mar 31, 2008 4:55 PM CDT reply actions

Update

Swisher walked. OC slow chopper, throw home if off-line. The catcher pulled off plate swipes at Crede coming home and misses the shoulder. Umpire allows himself to be screened and calls the runner out. Then Thome batting with bases loaded and one out. Ground ball to second. Cabrera thrown out at second and then Thome called out on runner's interference. Very controversial call.

will say Ocab reached out but that's bs...Ozzie shouda got him self run. I guess now we'll see if our new bul pen can hold them.

by spadog on Mar 31, 2008 5:00 PM CDT reply actions

For those without a view:

Bases loaded, no out. OCab hits a grounder that they go home to get Crede. Bad throw goes high and Crede sneaks in under. He had no business scoring, so the ump just called him out. He was in bad position to see. Then OCab gets called for interference at second on a could be double play. But it was another terrible call. We should've scored on each of those plays.

Meh.

Sometimes the umpire calls things in your favor, sometimes he doesn't. I don't get too worked up about it.

Frankly, I'm just shocked that the team is still in this game.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Mar 31, 2008 5:04 PM CDT reply actions

The call at 2nd

was correct. Throwing your arms into the fielder when he is clearly off the bag is runner interference. It isn't always called though. If you go in to him with your feet it can be called a natural slide to the bag and it's legit. Nothing natural about trying to grab the fielder by the leg as he throws.

by Bull Pain on Mar 31, 2008 5:05 PM CDT reply actions

Call at 2nd: They leave it to the ump to decide

Rule text:

Rule 7.08(b) Comment: A runner who is adjudged to have hindered a fielder who is attempting to make a play on a batted ball is out whether it was intentional or not.
If, however, the runner has contact with a legally occupied base when he hinders the fielder, he shall not be called out unless, in the umpire’s judgment, such hindrance, whether it occurs on fair or foul territory, is intentional. If the umpire declares the hindrance intentional, the following penalty shall apply: With less than two out, the umpire shall declare both the runner and batter out. With two out, the umpire shall declare the batter out.

by CatBrains on Mar 31, 2008 5:08 PM CDT reply actions

Is Gagne Brewers' closer?

if so, how are they going to compete in NL Central?

that guy blows!

by The Scoper on Mar 31, 2008 5:30 PM CDT reply actions

Sick of discussing the Sox's woe

So I will ask, what exactly has Gagne done in his recent history to be handed a closing (or important relief) role on any team?

by CatBrains on Mar 31, 2008 5:30 PM CDT reply actions

Woes*

Unfortunately the Sox do have more than one

by CatBrains on Mar 31, 2008 5:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Lots and lots

of steroids

I really want to like the Brewers, but from the top down they are a team of losers.

by Bull Pain on Mar 31, 2008 5:31 PM CDT up reply actions

That whole division is a joke

The Cubs can win that shithole with 83 wins.

by Ozzie Montana on Mar 31, 2008 5:32 PM CDT up reply actions

According to Phil Rogers

The Brewers had a better offseason than the Cubs because they picked up Kendall and Gagne while the Cubs only got Fukudome and lost Kendall, Floyd and Jones. Phil Rogers also picked Drake over UCLA in his hoops pool.

Too bad Sam Smith can't join in on the festivities anymore.

by Ozzie Montana on Mar 31, 2008 5:38 PM CDT up reply actions

More than Octavio Dotel, that's for sure.

Aside from his Boston troubles for less than one half of last season, he's pitched pretty damn well, including his time in Texas prior to the trade.

Well, Kenny, I have to hand it to you. It's the best mindfuck yet.

by Toonderstrook on Mar 31, 2008 5:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Hmm...

Texas number are indeed better than I thought. Still, I'd want to make sure he was right. As far as Dotel is concerned, I was not a fan of that signing, so that shouldn't hurt my assertion that Gagne shouldn't be handed the job (though his Texas numbers do hurt that assertion)

by CatBrains on Mar 31, 2008 5:42 PM CDT up reply actions

I wasn't arguing with your assertion.

I was just showing you that he isn't the only one, and steroids or not, he's got a track record.

Well, Kenny, I have to hand it to you. It's the best mindfuck yet.

by Toonderstrook on Mar 31, 2008 5:43 PM CDT up reply actions

That is why I originally said "recent history"

and I will now retcon "recent history" into meaning the last half season...
So... I win!! :)

Wood

good to see Wood suck it up as the closer

by The Scoper on Mar 31, 2008 5:32 PM CDT reply actions

Why?

I don't see it. However, I do find it hilarious that the Brewers have Gagne closing, who does nothing BUT fail now that he's off the 'roids.

Out-underacheiving the other guy.

by defensive indifference on Mar 31, 2008 5:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe the umps blew some calls,

but as others have said (or in some people's cases, beaten to death), there is no excuse for not being able to get a ball out of the infield with the bases loaded and nobody out. Also, when you give up six two-out runs you really don't give yourself the best chance to win.

Well, Kenny, I have to hand it to you. It's the best mindfuck yet.

by Toonderstrook on Mar 31, 2008 5:46 PM CDT reply actions

These kinds of games are going to be pretty common this year

Looking at the AL, there aren't many reliable pitching staffs. Makes for fun games, albeit tons more heart-wrenching losses like this one.

by Ozzie Montana on Mar 31, 2008 5:48 PM CDT up reply actions

i think that depends.

sloppy games like this one don't do it for me. give me a low scoring game with crisp defense and a few timely hits any day.

Well, Kenny, I have to hand it to you. It's the best mindfuck yet.

by Toonderstrook on Mar 31, 2008 5:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Don't forget missed defensive plays in the 2nd inning...

I mean, really, we had no business being in this game once we gave up a 7 spot.

But we were because the offense, even with the missed opportunities, still produced a lot of runs. So if there's a silver lining, I think that is it.

by vince_ on Mar 31, 2008 5:53 PM CDT up reply actions

that's the spirit...

i think 161-1 and would probably still win the division.

Well, Kenny, I have to hand it to you. It's the best mindfuck yet.

by Toonderstrook on Mar 31, 2008 5:54 PM CDT up reply actions

If it were guys other than Thome and Cabrera

I'd give more credence to the notion. But 8 runs is supposed to win by 3 not lose by 2.

This game

was an embarrassment to the MLB. Whoever said this looked liked an NBA game is absolutely right. These umps had money on this game... that is why they were squeezing Buehrle early. 3 horrendous calls on top of it and about 14 pitches that were strikes but called balls. If I was Ozzie I would drop a copy of this game off at their hotel rooms for them to go back over. Baseball NEEDS INSTANT REPLAY! If you demand it and your wrong you get an out. 2 instant replays per team per game.

by Where Triples Go to Die on Mar 31, 2008 6:31 PM CDT reply actions

No I am serious

They say it will slow the game down too much but really it is more beneficial to the fans that they get to watch a game called fairly. Today is a perfect example why managers are pining for it. At least give the umpires time to meet and discuss rules before making a hard headed calls. What a great game though... The game really felt like it was the last game of the season and we were in a tie for first with the tribe. I know OCab fucked up bad today but I really feel like he was just trying to hard... once he settles down watch out this guy is a true gamer regardless of his avg. w/ bases loaded!

Coop

[JC]:

Pitching coach Don Cooper watched his starters post a 4.73 ERA this spring. Considering the collateral damage caused to his staff in Tucson in the past, he was feeling good about where the group is heading into Opening Day. ''If I look at everybody individually, I want to say each guy seems to have had one poor start, maybe other than [Mark] Buehrle,'' Cooper said. ''They got all the work down here that they needed to get; the innings and the pitches are where they need to be. And now the bell rings, and the stuff will count.''

Mak had his bad start today...
