Steve Stone has joined the White Sox as the team's full-time radio color analyst, joining play-by-play man Ed Farmer in the booth, as announced by the White Sox and flagship station WSCR Radio (670 AM) on Tuesday. The deal was hammered out Monday night, with Stone fulfilling Chris Singleton's one-year deal for 2008. Singleton came to the team and requested out of his contract on Friday, when a television opportunity came his way. A source close to the situation told MLB.com that Singleton will be joining ESPN's "Baseball Tonight." ... The first broadcast for the new Farmer-Stone team will be Friday's Spring Training game against Arizona at Tucson Electric Park.

this looks like it's a pretty sudden move. if i were stone, though, i'd want to make sure i was doing some tv. and the sox should also consider auditioning some other broadcasters in case stone decides one year is all he wants to do. so we'll see how it all gets resolved.

If they're having trouble selling the radio

then I imagine they're not doing so great selling their TV ads either. After last year corporate Chicago probably has probably tuned out the spin, and instead has their beancounters looking at the projections. Those ratings took a huge dump last year.

it's early march. advertisers have been reallocating/reducing their dollars and reevaluating their strategies in the face of the present economic downturn. i don't doubt that team performance and ratings are playing into this but there's a bit more than that going on. i'd be holding off on my commitments, too.

That Swisher trade came out of nowhere, and it really didn't make a lot of sense given the age of the team and their chances of winning in this division. I wouldn't be surprised if KW was forced into doing something drastic by the finance people in the front office because of bad ticket and ad sales.

But Sox fans are notoriously fickle. If they're not selling their ad time and attendance takes a big drop, I don't think they can support this kind of payroll. Should make for an interesting trade deadline if they come out of the gates slow this year.

probably 1.5-1.7m. the calculus has changed some with the increased revenue from mlb stuff and online. attendance has become more like gravy (it always was after a certain point, but that point is lower now) than a necessity. and that certain point is getting pretty close to a slam dunk point even for the teams with low attendance.

then I'm right back to square one and completely befuddled by all these maneuvers. If they can breakeven at 1.5mm what's the point of shipping out every single prospect in our minor leagues this winter? If there were a mandate to get competitive NOW to salvage 2008 financial issues, then it makes sense. But if that's not the motivation...

Unless...KW was so disenchanted with the state of our minor league player development that he decided to clean out the stables and start over from scratch. Seeing how ill-prepared our minor leaguers are for mlb, that would explain a lot of things.

you need to keep in mind

what the ownership group cares about. they aren't particularly concerned about making a large profit. they are concerned about incurring a large loss. they are also extremely reticent to take on debt and don't do that. they also like to watch competitive teams. i'd imagine, if anything, the latter is what primarily animated teh sox this offseason.

i said that's what primarily motivated this offseason's moves. they would still be acting with consideration to the prior interests. saddling the team with aaron rowand's contract probably was a bad idea for the longer-term health of the balance sheets.

and, yes, i think they should be worried, too. but remember that a lot of these guys are 75+. ;)

So they're worried about a Rowand deal, but they sign Linebrink to a 4yr with a NTC, extend JD with a NTC, extend MB with a NTC, extend AJ, see PK get vested with a NTC.

well

none of those contracts is particularly burdensome in a fiscal sense. like i said, they can pay for what they are committed to. more, or how much more, who knows. if you're talking about fielding a competitive team in 2010, i understand your point. but lots of those contracts are gone by then, too. the sox don't sign many real long-term deals. who is under contract for more than 3 years, MB and linebrink? and for a comparative pittiance? these guys aren't dumb businessmen. may not be the best baseball businessmen, in terms of maximizing both revenue and wins, but they don't lose money. not by a long shot.

Before they won the WS they were always quick to toss their cards when it looked like they had a bad hand, being patient about seeing the next deal. You must believe that the front office can pull a trade out of their respective hineys at a moment's notice. The trade seems fairly even (after the initial sturm and drang most opinions were fairly even), so they certainly didn't get fleeced. A "forced" trade usually has a pretty clear winner and loser, don't you agree?

Plus, the one of the initial risks was that they'd pissed off the fandom by castrating the farm (animals) - I do believe many folks were initially PO'ed and talking about cashing in tickets. Is Swish a draw, to the extent he now is the difference in whether or not you buy a ticket? Maybe later, after he assumes the Rowand mantle, but now?

I wasn't able to catch the game and judging from the boxscore, I can't get a good grasp on how he pitched. 3 ks and the other 3 outs he recorded were groundouts, which is usually a good sign. Did he get hit hard or were they bleeders?

Question.

Brian Anderson has 24 ABs so far this spring. This is 70% more than any Sox player I had heard of before spring training, next is Jermaine Dye with 14 ABs. (Eldred & Negron are sandwiched between BA & Dye).

Why so many ABs for young Brian?

Crede needs to show some more with the bat. And stop committing errors, dammit.
Anderson is once again showing he can play in Arizona. Perhaps we can trade him to the D-Backs for Miguel Montero or Wes Roemer and Max Scherzer. Wishful thinking, maybe.
Konerko is swinging the bat really well. Hopefully he can keep it up all year long, or at least until the AS break, when he can get flipped if the Sox aren't contending.
