MLB The Show 2008

My bud recently got the Show 2008 for PS2 and I've played about a half dozen games in the past two days. I played as the Sox, of course, and I have some thoughts...

  1. The ball doesn't fly off Swisher's bat as much as I expected. I am not absolutely terrible at the game, but I got one hit with Swisher, and it was a blooping single. I went like 1-10 with him. I think his power is underrated in the game.
  2. Dye is absolutely atrocious in RF. I actually subbed him out and replaced him with Jerry Owens. I immediately noticed an improvement when Francouer hit a slicer down the line and Jerry got to it no problem. I had someone (I forget who) score an in-the-park home run on a shot down the RF line. The guy was half-way to third by the time Dye got to the ball.
  3. Small sample size, sure... but Juan Uribe is a God in the Show. I went 3-4 with a double shy of the cycle. Yes, you read that right... Juanny hit a triple. A legit triple. Another game Juanny went 2-4. I turned on a high fastball and sent it to the seats in dead center of Turner Field.
  4. Quentin has some pop. For some reason the Show made him a retard on the basepaths though. The game is kinda annoying with its pickoff sequence... especially when the catcher throws to firstbase in an attempted pickoff. Quentin trotted casually back to 1B and got CS. I was like "WTF?! Get back!"
  5. Fields got some serious pop. I caught a fastball down the middle and sent it flying. The homerun sequences are pretty cool, as you get to see an individual player's own Homerun strut. Fields just kinda stared at his as he walked down the line. Nothing special.
  6. AJ cannot catch a curveball in the dirt or throw anyone out at 2nd base to save his life. I seriously had 4 passed balls on swung-on-and missed curveballs that were low. This always seemed to happen when someone speedy was at 3rd base. Runs insued.
  7. Swisher is not awful in CF. He's a little slower, but he has a cannon of an arm that makes up for it.
  8. Bobby Jenks' curveball is impossible to hit. It's so filthy it's not fair. Throw in some high heat at 96 MPH, and a decent slider, and you've got a lethal pitcher. Every now and then someone will catch up to the slider and knock it to the wall, so I don't mess with it. I stick with the filth.
  9. Javy is pretty darned filthy, but he is far from unhittable. I had a typical Javy outing, striking out everyone I didn't allow hits to. Buehrle, I thought, is a little easier to succeed with because of his junk.
  10. Wasserman is filthy too. His sidearm delivery is incredibly hard to follow and his stuff has some really awesome movement. Aside from Linebrink and Bobby, I think Wasserman has the best stuff in the bullpen. Logan ain't bad either. I didn't touch Dewon Day, and MacDougal and Thornton had less than spectacular stuff. MacDougal's slider is kinda filthy though if thrown outside the zone. Bottom line... I am really impressed with Wasserman in the game.
  11. a) Some general thoughts on the game... I think it's glitchy in some parts. It freezes sometimes after you go to the menus, like say to the bullpen.
b) Your bud can scroll through your menus when you pause the game (like, say, to make a sub or warm someone up) You can see that when playing someone drunk how quickly this can get old. It makes no sense why they allowed this.

c) The guess pitch feature is kinda useful. If you're facing someone of limited pitches, like say a curve, and two fastballs, you can guess the curve. If the screen doesn't flash, you know you're getting a fastball. If it does flash, you know you're getting the curve. Pretty neat feature.

d) The pickoff ordeal is kinda tricky and favors the defense. Baserunners don't always get back as fast as they should and pickoffs ensue more than they do in real-life.

e) Don't pitch fastballs to power hitters. Ever. Like with Texiera. Ever. I sent him a high Bobby Jenks fastball, out of the zone, like at his face, and he hit a walk-off homer.

f) You can't argue calls, or get your manager tossed. When you visit the mound, you can't calm your pitcher down, or stall the game, etc. That sucks. The EA game was a bit superior in this regard. I kinda wish they still made the EA games.

Overall, the game is deserving of the 8.0 or so that IGN gave it. It is glitchy, and there are some issues, but I hear it's much better than 2K8. That's just from what I've read, as I haven't played 2K8. Maybe I will soon.

PS2? Time to get with the next-gen...
Anyways, I have heard that The Show on PS3 is better than MLB 2K8 on Xbox 360.  I have only played MLB 2K8 because I have a Xbox 360 and it's decent, nothing spectacular.

I have a 360...
My friend has the game for PS2 because he is still behind. Did you mean that the show for PS2 is better than 2K8 for 360? That's what I figured.

The Show on PS2 got a better rating than 2K8 did on 360.

Buy The Show for PS3...
I have heard from many sources that it is better than MLB 2K8.  Those of us with Xbox 360's are only left with one option.  MLB 2K8 is decent on Xbox 360 but it's nothing great.  I would love to try The Show but I don't feel like dropping $500 bucks for a PS3 and The Show.

I need a baseball game
but I hear 2K8 sucks so I was thinking of getting 2K7 again. I liked it but had other games to play. Then again Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is coming out this month. Then again my 360 is broke so none of this really matters

Dude...
Why not send it off to get it fixed? Isn't it still under warranty? Or at least pay to get it fixed, it can't be as much as a new one.

I'm lucky that my 360 hasn't broken yet (knock on wood) but I know of so many that have...

Sony has the licensing for the Show so don't expect it to ever come to the 360 anytime soon. That means you're stuck with 2K8 or getting the Show for PS2, which will run you about $150.

second time it happened. I'm actually playing God of War 2 on ps2 now since my 360 is broke and I'm at home for spring break.

its fun so far
The combat seems kinda slow compared to Devil May Cry 4 on 360. I don't really remember the first one since i played it like 4 years ago but its a fun game and i got it cheap

...Yeah I saw they are cheap...
re: GoW 1 and 2.

I am considering picking them up. I watched my friends play the first one to death and I enjoyed watching it.

I am a huge, huge DMC fan... loved the first one when it first came out and beat it probably half a dozen times on varying difficulties, trying to get all the stuff and unlockables.

The second one was... well... not nearly as good. I played it and beat it a few times on all but the hardest difficulty. I just didn't like the sceneries...

The third one was so awesome. I was very impressed. Beat it of course every which way but Dante Must Die mode (so flippin' hard...)...

I played the demo for DMC4 and was only moderately impressed. The graphics are nice, sure, but the moves just weren't as cool, IMO. I'll still buy it, but I am not sure if it will be better than DMC 1 or 3.

Btw, if you like DMC and the present era Castlevania games, you should check out an older game for PS2 called Chaos Legion

DMC4 might be my favorite
you should definitely get it. The demo didn't impress me much but the overall game is great. Since your a DMC fan, I seriously doubt that you'll be disappointed.

Done...
Picked up DMC4 for 360 and God of War for PS2. Between those two, Rock Band, and Guitar Hero III, I won't mind not being able to go to the beach for spring break next week...

BTW, Marco, do you play Halo 3 on XBOX live? If so, send a request my way... icebreakers04

I got it but don't really play it anymore
I stopped playing about after a month cause I got the Orange Box, Mass Effect, Assassins Creed, COD4 and just never really went back to it. I mainly play COD4 online but add me as a friend Marco es Drunk. Hopefully I get my 360 back in a few weeks.

Ah alright.
I've heard good things about COD4. I play Halo3 a lot online nowadays... I'm only a Grade 2 Captain though. I just can't seem to get my skill above 20.

Notice how Over-rated Dye is
In the game, though? I just went 4-5 with 2 hr and a  2b in a spring training game. Maybe I'll trade him, Uribe and Crede.

Dye is rated highly for batting...
but atrociously bad in fielding. He may be slower than Konerko.

Uribe is something of a God though, at least small sample sizes tell me.
