how does that look?
btw, when you click the stats symbol (
) it takes a long long long time to come up
can that be made faster?
For me it's only slow the first load
so if I'm adding 9 things, only the first one lags.
/also I've noticed some longer-than-normal lagginess on the site today. So it might be an isolated incident

Great Job With The Stats Widgets!
I will make it a top priority to speed up the Stats Widget Selector.

thanks
about the 'Lineup' widget
the 'Players Stats' widget has a checkbox named 'Extended stats?' that if checked gives you the more detailed version of a players stats.
Can an 'Extended stats?' checkbox be placed on the 'Lineup' widget, so that if checked will place the player's stats after his name?
like this in the last 2 tables above
the stats popup drop-down menu has a lot of choices
I thought creating a custom widget with the usual starters only
but the stats for that won't be updated yes?
that's great
can you also add a column for OPS? I know I could just do simple addition, but I'm (we're?) kinda lazy sometimes.
the stats come like this
I just select the 9 players in the lineup
cheat, can you/we ask someone in sbn to put an OPS column in the end?
No
I'm going to assume that readers of this blog can add two three digit numbers

Impressive...
I know I've been pretty busy lately with school and haven't been around that often on the board, but I am pleased with the progress of the gamethreads. Hopefully soon I can be a larger part of the discussions like I was last year.
The gamethread boxscore and lineup looks really good. Props goes to everyone who put it together and tested it.

Home stretch...
Everything is due in the next two to three weeks. It's really hampering my White Sox time! I've seen only about 4 innings of real games this regular season :(

Hope they weren't last night.
Pitching and defense.
extended lineup?
if you click a players his AVG/OBP/SLG re entered
if select the 'extended stats' and then click all the stats are entered
can this be done with the lineups too?
now if you click on the lineups, only the names are entered
you have to click each of the names manually
can it be modified so after the name you get all the stats?
doesn't show up on cot's yet,
but apparently the d'backs-chris young contract includes some type of no-trade protection.

Jim Thome - You make the call
Here's the vital statistics from Cots Baseball Contracts.
Big Jim (whom I love btw) was born 8/27/70, which means he'll turn 38 this season. As much as we hate to admit it, our favorite players don't stay frozen in amber forever. Sadly, inevitably, time catches up with even the best of them. So here's his contract, he waived his NTC when he got traded, what do you do with him?
IMO General Managers don't get paid nearly enough. They're getting $500,000 to manage $250mm enterprises, and every decision they make is open to public scrutiny. And for 29 out of 30 of them every decision is open to public ridicule. No thank you.
I don't like to second guess, so here's your chance to first guess. I think I identified the first chink in the Thomer's armour today, I would say the hell with sentiment and I'd start seeing what I could get for him from a contender. But then, you've got to balance that with the big dropoff in season tickets. I think if KW had his way he'd trade him, in the same cold-blooded way he let Frank Thomas loose. As I said, I would not want that job.

Thome doesn't strike me as the kind of guy
who would hang around after he really began to decline, nor do i think he would sign on as a platoon player. He has done a lot and made a lot of money. His back has become an issue. I doubt he will be around after 2009, at the latest. I wouldn't be surprised if he ended it in '08 if this year goes poorly. Most of all, though, I don't see him playing for another team. He sounded as if the Sox were an exception he made to waive his no-trade clause. I thought he said he wanted to end his career here. I really doubt we hear so much as speculation the Sox are shopping Thome, let alone him actually being traded.
by MarketMaker on Apr 10, 2008 11:01 PM CDT up reply actions
He's playing for the love of the game, not the money?
I think we should throw this over to the Let's Go Tribe blog and see what they think of that. He had 536 PA's last year, so if he gets another 564 PA's this year that $13mm vests for 2009. If he can stay healthy enough to gather that many PAs this year, I don't see him walking away from a guaranteed $13mm no matter how bad his numbers might be this year. The Sox better start talking up the press about his LHP splits so they have an excuse to start platooning him sometime soon.
Good job with that contract, Pete.
Pitching and defense.
Thank you
I'm not trying to give the impression that Thome is going to suck this year, and that he's starting to fall off a cliff. Odds are he'll end up with another good, solid Thomer season - but not anything like his peak years. I just think this in particular is an extremely tough decision to make, and this is the kind of jam you find yourself in when you commit yourself to a veteran ballclub. These guys are inevitably going to start their decline on your clock. Common sense says let him go because DH's are a dime a dozen, but in this case you're talking about the Thomer man. FWIW baseball prospectus says his MORP for 2009 is $6.5mm, which is half of what his option is.
KW's going to find himself facing a lot of these kinds of decisions in the next two years, if attendance and ad revenues are down his decisions will be pretty easy.
But they drew 15,000 in the 2nd game last year!
You know I'm kidding. And actually, you may have a point (without realizing it... or at least articulating it yesterday or today):
Last year's suckitude is certainly reason for concern about the potential for revenue decline (as you've stated). What may really tip the scales to the wrong side is the current general economic woes. Assuming even flat incomes among the fan base, the Sox have always been a team with "show me what you've got before I give you my $$" type attendees. If incomes aren't keeping up with inflation, or going down, the discretionary $$ could be even harder to come by and force some KW decisions that he otherwise wouldn't choose.
So, while I wasn't agreeing with you initially, I'm starting to agree. Where's WU with my sanity check?
Skanberg, if I wanted to hear your opinion, I would have brainwashed you by now-
Don Guillote
KW's moves make a lot more sense now
We speculated on his motives this winter, but it's becoming apparent now that the attendance figures are out. He's under orders to salvage the revenue base, and the only way to do it with fickle Sox fans is to win - and win NOW, not in 2010. It's pretty apparent that the nuclear half life of a WS didn't last very long.

thome never going to reach his option
so it doesn't really matter. the question is whether the sox regnegotiate.
somewhere in arizona, jerry owens silently weeps.
If he does,
it is another indicator Guillen is doing a piss-poor managing job.
LIKE TONIGHT----
ideal opportunity to get Ramirez or Anderson some at-bats.
but thome is batting
.455/1.200 against lefties this year. and was 1-3 with a double against willis last week. stats don't lie, son.
somewhere in arizona, jerry owens silently weeps.
Thomer might have made himself $13mm with those 2 "dongers" vs. CC
He should get a lot of mileage out of those, he'll see a lot more starts vs. LHPs - at least for awhile. I remember reading a thing or two in the spring from the coaches re his LHP splits.
by ChicagoPete on Apr 11, 2008 11:30 AM CDT up reply actions
honestly
if thome knows what's good for him financially (assuming he intends to play after 2008 and into 2010), he won't reach those PAs. he'll get more guaranteed money if he doesn't. the problem for the sox, if they want to keep him, is how to structure the deal so they don't lose the philly money. or how whether they can get thome to take a haircut to make it easier.
somewhere in arizona, jerry owens silently weeps.
Actually...
if Guillen denies ABs to Thome specifically so he doesn't reach that option, and the union has good reason to believe that that's the case, they have a grievance that they're likely to win.
Guillen's not supposed to worry about that kind of stuff when he makes out the lineup card.
by The Jerry Royster Experience on Apr 11, 2008 11:12 AM CDT up reply actions
That's why I mentioned the press and the LHP splits
They've got to start building a pretty solid case that they're benching him for sound statistical reasons instead of just trying to keep him from wracking up PA's - and the better make their case in the court of public opinion. On top of that they've got to sell it in the clubhouse, or else you'll have a team full of very unhappy ballplayers if they think management is juking things to take money out of someone's pocket. '
I think you're better off just trading him this year and trying to get something for him. Let some other team worry about whether or not that option vests.
by ChicagoPete on Apr 11, 2008 11:18 AM CDT up reply actions
by the way
what you missed about thome's option is that the phillies pick up half of it (or thereabouts). so the sox will be paying just about what MORP expects him to be worth.
somewhere in arizona, jerry owens silently weeps.
They pick up half of the option year too?
It wasn't clear from COTS, I kind of read it that the Phillies were only on the hook through 2008. Yeah, obviously if they're still picking up half next year it's a totally different story.
by ChicagoPete on Apr 11, 2008 11:22 AM CDT up reply actions
then better to sit him now rather than later
especially against lefties. jimbo (or ozzie/KW, for that matter) wouldn't cause those kind of waves anyway. thome will never see that option. he either will do what everyone expects and merely not reach it or the sox will renegotiate.
somewhere in arizona, jerry owens silently weeps.
This Crede thing makes more sense now too
They're sacrificing Field's future development in order to get better defense out there and squeeze a few more wins out of this year. Josh is already 25, he shouldn't be in Charlotte.
by ChicagoPete on Apr 11, 2008 11:34 AM CDT up reply actions
or they're ensuring he's not a super two
williams' twinning formula.
somewhere in arizona, jerry owens silently weeps.
I will reiterate - some of his coaches believed
in January that he was/is not ready for prime time at 3B, or at the plate. They might know a thing or two about his development.
I took the "under".

They might not, either.
This is the same team that thought that putting Scott Podsednik and Darin Erstad at the top of the lineup last year was an awesome idea.
by The Jerry Royster Experience on Apr 11, 2008 12:41 PM CDT up reply actions
If that
even remotely enters into Guillen's decision-making about lineups, it only further validates the notion of him as a tough, independent thinker uninfuenced by such forces is just a bunch of horseshit. I'm not sure what to think about all that right now.
Also, my apologies to DJ for last night
He made the comment that pitchers were coming at Thome a lot harder, which I thought was bullshit - who has the balls to come after the Thomer? But the numbers back him up, he was right on. As much grief as we give him and Hawk, I think it's only fair to point out when they come up with something insightful. I mentioned it opening day, but I think he's really picked up his game this year.
