Hoover or Oreck?

They suck to completion. Do the Tigers?

Who cares who sucks at the end?

I care about sucking at the start. THAT'S what I want.

The Sox have 3 blowouts (5+ run victories) over the Tigers

They had 3 blowout victories versus all of baseball in the first 3 months of last season.

a little of both.

Rhetorical, sir.

It's always a balance. Well, mostly. You are always right (at least lately). Some of us don't yet trust that. We'll learn.

Go play the lottery - you are on a roll. ;0

"atomic wedgie": new name for blowouts!!

According to our SBN brethren:

Apparently, that 11-0 atomic wedgie the White Sox laid on the Tigers was the breaking point. That was all he could stands, and he can't stands no more! After the game, Leyland lit into his woefully underperforming squad. We don't know what he said to the team, but we know he kept the media out of the clubhouse while he did it, and refused to elaborate on what sort of tirade he might have thrown when asked about it afterwards. And the players took their verbal beating like men.

The question now is whether this accomplishes anything. Even Leyland knows he can stomp and flail and yell all he wants, but it's on the players to start putting in a far greater effort. And therein lies the risk. If the Tigers continue to lollygag, what does he do then? Maybe Leyland should start holding himself accountable.

It helps...

that Podsednik, Erstad, and Andy Gonzalez aren't around to kill innings any more.

The Tigers' pitching is awful.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Apr 14, 2008 3:06 PM CDT up reply actions

current ops against of .800, tied for worst in the AL

interestingly, five national league teams are worse.

Somebody's shoved a red-hot poker up our ass, and I want to know whose name is on the handle!

by Toonderstrook on Apr 14, 2008 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions

agreed.

was just putting a number next to jerry's "awful." really i found it more interesting that the five worst OPS against staffs in the young season face a pitcher or bench player every time through the order.

Yeah I admit I far underestimated

The potential problems of the pitching staff. They will of course hit but geez I dont know if it will matter.

by Tdogg on Apr 14, 2008 3:14 PM CDT up reply actions

maybe underestimated the injury problems, as well

somewhere in arizona, jerry owens silently weeps.

by larry on Apr 14, 2008 3:16 PM CDT up reply actions

If you mean the impact of missing Rodney or Zum yes

Sheffield was never expected to be healthy. Grand and Cab were flukes.

by Tdogg on Apr 14, 2008 3:21 PM CDT up reply actions

polanco, guillen...

miggy wasn't a fluke. this is the same injury he's been fighting since winter ball. very expected.

somewhere in arizona, jerry owens silently weeps.

by larry on Apr 14, 2008 3:23 PM CDT up reply actions

I guess

I never studied any other players. I only felt like Maggs wasnt an injury risk (increased)

by Tdogg on Apr 14, 2008 3:38 PM CDT up reply actions

By the way Cab and Polanco were greens.

Guillen and of course Sheff were a big red.

by Tdogg on Apr 14, 2008 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I've always wondered why that is

The top hitters, ie Pujols, Feilder, Howard, any colorado rockie, etc. seem to murder the ball at a little bit better rate than AL guy. But the pitchers like Peavy, Webb, Carpenter, all have slightly more dominant howings as well. It seems like it is jut a much more top heavy league.

Well Oz doesnt suck and he certainly will win and rebound.

Im not against him, I just thought he was no longer Top 10 pitcher wise in Fantasy. I would trade real life for him in a second.

Another crazy stat

In '07, Guillen's most used lineup played only 8 games together (two different lineups got 8 games together)

This season, he's already used the same lineup 7 times.

he did add this useful nugget.

White Sox leadoff hitters rank third in all of baseball in OBP at .453. (Oakland enters this series at 26th). Last year, we ranked 27th (and last in the AL) at .321.

Still rooting for Crede to fail, JRE?

Just become a Royals fan and rid us of your constant "if they fail now, we'll better in a few years" gag reflexes. Jesus, man.

Out-underacheiving the other guy.

by defensive indifference on Apr 14, 2008 4:29 PM CDT up reply actions

I hope he does well, now.

That way the Sox might actually get something in trade for him.

A slump won't do anything to get him out of the lineup at this point - the first few games mean that the Sox will stick with him now.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Apr 14, 2008 4:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Or even better...

if he has a great year, he might even be a type-"A" at the end of the season.

Of course, knowing Ken Williams, he wouldn't offer Crede arbitration...

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Apr 14, 2008 4:39 PM CDT up reply actions

That's always a factor.

Williams is good at the "buy low" part of a trade, not so good at the "sell high" part.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Apr 14, 2008 4:42 PM CDT up reply actions

i agree, he's has taken some nice chances on low-risk, high-reward players

but i think he is generally unwilling to part with Sox that were valuable but simply cannot sustain their most recent production.

by MarketMaker on Apr 14, 2008 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I think he gets a certain image...

in his head of what a player is worth, and it's really hard for him to adjust when reality shows him wrong. Crede and Dye are good examples - his initial assessment of them is what he's sticking with, and if other GMs disagree, well, then fine - he'll just hold onto them.

Look how long he was obsessed with Darin Erstad. He didn't let the fact that Erstad was always hurt and sucked when he wasn't hurt during his last few years with the Angels stop him from giving Erstad a contract.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Apr 14, 2008 4:53 PM CDT up reply actions

i agree, it seems he has decided to keep dye for the duration

but i thought in light of the sox slipping away in 2006, he was remiss for not agressively exploring the market for dye after the extreme abberation of a season dye had that year. perhaps he did, but i would have bet there could have been a nice haul to be had from some foolish gm looking to upgrade their corner of'ers.

Well...

he's never had an issue trading youth, and the return on Sirotka wasn't really that great. Either he knew that Sirotka was FUBAR, or he got really lucky.

Garcia, I'll grant you - he's the one veteran that I thought he got good value for.

I was just thinking that, with Buehrle on the mound and the lefty-heavy lineup the A's feature, it would be nice to see someone other than Jermaine Dye standing in right field.

PS Didn't Leyland do the same thing last year

in April? Called out the team after a particulat sucky series? And they proceeded to go on a roll for (almost) the rest of the year?

We'll see if it has the same/similar effect. I bet not - it's like what was said about Skiles/Pat Riley and other intense coaches - they get tired of the same speech. This may only be the 2nd year, but I bet Pudge has heard it many times before.

A's DFA Fernando Hernandez,

[SFC]:

Saarloos back, Hernandez out

From Chronicle Staff Writer Susan Slusser in Chicago

The A's kept Rule-5 draftee Jay Marshall all last year, but this year's Rule-5 pick, reliever Fernando Hernandez, didn't last the first month.

Hernandez had two rough outings on this trip, including allowing four runs at Cleveland on Sunday, and with the A's needing more depth in the bullpen, the right-hander was designated for assignment today and right-hander Kirk Saarloos was called up. Saarloos, a former 10-game winner for the A's and a clubhouse favorite, will be the long man for now.

Hernandez must go through waivers and if he clears, he must be offered back to the White Sox, and they can take him back for $25,000 if they choose. A's assistant GM David Forst said if Hernandez clears waivers, Oakland will have some talks with the White Sox, which means the team might be open to swinging a deal with Chicago to keep Hernandez.
