I saw the comments first

and as I was reading the lineup I was wondering what the Sunday and the yeesh were about and then, well, we’ll just say that if the bottom three combine for say 2 trips on base, I’ll be happy

the lineup may look brutal,

but AJ definitely needs a day off with no off day until next monday, and what better day than against a lefty strikeout pitcher; thome could use the day off against that same left-hander.

Somebody's shoved a red-hot poker up our ass, and I want to know whose name is on the handle!

yeah, can't say i have a real problem with the lineup

probably would flip q and crede but crede has had a hot bat so can’t really complain too much. it’s not like last night’s lineup produced much, either. if you’re gonna start ramirez and ozuna, eveland is certainly a guy to do it against.

The lineup

looks fine considering the pitcher, the schedule, etc. I’m certainly happy to see Thome getting a little rest.

Good point about BA.

Sure...

but that doesn’t preclude Brian Anderson from being in the lineup.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Apr 15, 2008 12:29 PM CDT up reply actions

for whom?

so we can make the lineup even less potent by replacing JD or quentin? you get one or the other, not both.

Can't Ramirez play second?

I don’t particularly see the need to play Pablo Ozuna.

i don't. not sure where you're getting that from.

we’re talking ozuna or anderson against a lefty. the choice is pretty stark.

somewhere in arizona, jerry owens silently weeps.

by larry on Apr 15, 2008 12:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Well...

if we’re benching the guy with the worst numbers against lefties, the choice is obviously Carlos Quentin, who’s been pretty awful.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Apr 15, 2008 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions

obviously, eh

except which of brian or carlos is better against them? oops. and on a unsustainably low BABIP, too.

Meh.

Six of one, half-dozen of the other.

And Anderson has more defensive value than either Ozuna or Quentin.

But it’s beside the point – I don’t see the need to have Pablo Ozuna on the roster, much less in the starting lineup. He’s really not good at any aspect of the game.

Nothing wrong with that lineup.

Yesterday? Different story. Ozzie HAS TO GROW SOME BALLS where Thome is concerned. That situation will cost us more than a game or two if he continues playing him against lefthanders. I think it is a real lithmus test for him-- a real statement about the man’s integrity insofar as his image as an independent thinker who doesn’t allow politics or other dynamics to guide his thinking about how to run his team——especially when there is no defensible rational…..as is the case with Thome.

by dantesox on Apr 15, 2008 12:26 PM CDT up reply actions

benching thome for two straight games

doesn’t seem like a particularly good idea.

somewhere in arizona, jerry owens silently weeps.

by larry on Apr 15, 2008 12:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Why not?

I understand where you’re coming from…...but Thome will get his 500 plate appearances one way or another. So, this time he coincidentally misses two straight STARTS. hE COULD VERY WELL WRACK UP TWO PLATE APPEARANCES ANYWAY….IN SITUATIONS WHERE IT MAKES SENSE AND HE CAN MAKE A DIFFEERENCE IN A LATE-GAME SITUATION.

by dantesox on Apr 15, 2008 12:30 PM CDT up reply actions

you're the one who said there was no defensible rationale

there it is. i’m not particularly concerned about him getting a certain number of plate appearances in a season. i am concerned about fucking with the routine of a player. two straight days without live pitching isn’t a good idea.

somewhere in arizona, jerry owens silently weeps.

by larry on Apr 15, 2008 12:32 PM CDT up reply actions

iT'LL

likely happen three or four times in a year. The only difference in routine is…well, practically nothing. He should prepare just the way he always does…as though he’ll bat in his regular turn….or whatever. That is a very weak argument…..really weak.

by larry on Apr 15, 2008 12:59 PM CDT up reply actions

no, i actually don't know what you mean

i’m not going to sit thome for two days. he doesn’t like that. it’s probably not good for him even if he doesn’t mind it. players like to play and, except for a precious few, tend to do better when they do play regularly. if they don’t want to play, there’s something wrong with them and they should retire. i’ve noted that his two worst months as a sox player in each season has, coincidentally, been june. i’m sure you can figure out what happens in baseball starting in late may and into june. whether there’s causation or not i see a hell of a lot of smoke. enough for me to say don’t mess with it.

somewhere in arizona, jerry owens silently weeps.

by larry on Apr 15, 2008 1:12 PM CDT up reply actions

I like Thome. Alot.

He is crucial to this team’s success. HOWEVER: 1) His splits are so wildly one-sided over the last THREE years it justifies what I’m saying 2) O f course, I’m not naive enough to think you can avoid having to play politics….etc. I just think there are times when certain decisions are so vital to the won/loss column you have to take a stand….it just so happens that this one involves a manager whose public image is built on yadayadayada…..

by dantesox on Apr 15, 2008 1:19 PM CDT up reply actions

there's a reason computers don't manage teams

this is one of them. and it’s not necessarily politics. intermittent playing time is not good for a player, especially one like thome who has never platooned probably in his entire life.

somewhere in arizona, jerry owens silently weeps.

by larry on Apr 15, 2008 1:27 PM CDT up reply actions

It

wouldn’t be a strict platoon. And, he’s 38 years old and likely not what he once was. Slicing 150 nonproductive plate appearances is all I ask.

by dantesox on Apr 15, 2008 1:30 PM CDT up reply actions

what are you talking about then?

if you don’t want him to face lefties two days in a row, that sounds like – you guessed it – a strict platoon.

somewhere in arizona, jerry owens silently weeps.

Call it what you want.

There are probably a few times I’d play him against lefties….oh, maybr 20% of the time…..and no higher than sixth in the lineup. I’m exhausted.

Thome has a cold bat, Uribe still can barely hit. So the move of Ramirez and Ozuna is almost a wash right now.

Toby Hall is a major downgrade from AJ, but AJ needs the day off.

I don't think...

he’d see much playing time in that capacity. Thome is going to get at least 140-150 starts at DH, and Crede isn’t going anywhere. Fields would rot on the bench.

The guy to bring up, as suggested below, is someone like Bourgeois, who can play multiple positions.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Apr 15, 2008 1:49 PM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn't mind seeing the Frenchman

But I’m not sure Fields is going get much better in AAA. If the Sox actually had a good hitting coach I would think he’d be better off in the bigs even with fewer at-bats.

by hitlesswonder on Apr 15, 2008 1:51 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm just saying...

that Fields would sit, basically every day. There’s no room to play him anywhere as the roster is currently constructed. He’d be the backup to a third baseman who plays every day, and a fourth-string DH.

It’s all just “tough plays” I guess. I was at the Yankees game last weekend and Jeter threw an easy DP assist into CF. Ruled a hit.

Yeah but that's Jeter.

He walks on water. Or hadn’t you heard?

Alexei

Why can’t he get some play at 2B or just more in general, no reason he can’t play CF one game, 2B the next and get a few games in a row out there.
Really should be able to get him 2-3 starts a week considering Swish can play all three OF spots and 1B. Should be able to get him a start in the OF and a start or two at 2B, especially if he can hit lefties.
I just don’t see where it would hurt us considering the age of JD, Thome, Konerko and the badness of Uribe, not to mention Quinton not being proven yet. Could always have Uribe play a game or two a month at SS too. Just seems like with the flexibility we have, Alexei should be getting a few more starts then he has.

by Grinder in Training on Apr 15, 2008 2:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Alexei is "rawest" at 2B

This ain’t the minors. Spelling O-Cab at SS and Swish in CF seems to make the most sense right now.

I took the "under".

by winningugly on Apr 15, 2008 2:28 PM CDT up reply actions

so we replace a not proven quentin

with a not proven alexei. makes sense.

i think this team needs to stick with their “proven” players as much as possible to do what they’ve set themselves out to accomplish. the days off have ended for a while to we’ll probably see more of alexei.

somewhere in arizona, jerry owens silently weeps.

by larry on Apr 15, 2008 2:32 PM CDT up reply actions

I think I didn't explain myself well

I’m just saying once a week or two Quinton sits out and Alexei get’s a start there, considering all the moving parts, each starter would only probably sit out once every two weeks. Typical 10th man situation. Quinton would still be starting 9 out of 10 games. Just was saying we don’t have anyone in our line up who has played so well they shouldn’t sit out once in a while besides maybe Swisher. JD has played great but he’s old no reason to not rest him once in a while. Sit Thome vs. some lefties, sit Uribe .. once a week or more as long as Buehrle isn’t pitching. No reason Alexei can’t be playing more.

by Grinder in Training on Apr 15, 2008 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions

So all 3 Sox OFs are OPSing over .800.

It’s been awhile since that happened. Big swing from having 2 guys stuck under .700.
