Pass.
There are times when I just don't have a lot to say about a game, and this is one of them. I could have written a recap before I ate dinner -- Portillo's, if you were wondering -- but didn't really have much insight to offer at the time. Sometimes it comes to you after you let the game sink in. This isn't one of those nights.
I've got nuttin, and don't feel like faking it tonight.
Here's something: Video 400k 800k (mms links) of Quentin's 3-run HR from whitesox.com. I can't find video of Alexei's throw; CSN will repeat the game at 1am though (The Wizard).

I lied... I've got one
If you’re near a TV they’re gonna shot Quentin’s bat flip - Better than Iguchi’s. He really throws that thing - and hopefully more frequent than Juan’s homer hands.

that bat flip was money and not what i'd call modest

The bat flip was awesome, it almost went into the stands
btw Cheat – if you have Comcast, the Sox games go straight to On Demand after completion. They sit there for 48 hours, I think they’ve buried it under the “Local” tab.
''It's a grinder-type attitude, energetic attitude, confident-type attitude, and if it grinds on some people, then I need to know who those people are so we can move them on''
They're just strippers!
Seriously though: anyone else like Hawk’s little chuckle on that Mancrush shot? I also love how it was a no doubter as Q had a magnificent and delicious bat flip before he started trotting and Hawk went slightly mad.
God damn—I forgot how much fun it is having big league outfielders.
Ramirez showed well with two warning shot drives, one of which fell for a very long double. In the early part of the game (can’t remember exactly which inning) he made a great play sprinting to his left for a ball in the gap before spinning and firing a good accurate through to 2nd to get the runner rather easily.
I was at work and only watched Danks sporadically but he seemed to be getting ahead mostly and pitching with good command and control.
Good win and some more reason for optimism, at least for another night.
Ramirez hit the ball hard a few times yesterday, I don't think he wants to go to Charlotte
If he can sit on the bench and then come out and produce like that he’s very valuable.
''It's a grinder-type attitude, energetic attitude, confident-type attitude, and if it grinds on some people, then I need to know who those people are so we can move them on''
I've never had a problem with him
I’m all about getting the young guys out there. Throwing money at the guys on the wrong side of the curve is what I have issues with.

That thing is absolutely delicious. Milwaukee is terrible for those almost-but-not-quite-fast-food joints that serve delicious hot dogs, burgers and beef sandwiches.
Same here
There are two places that could be great hot dog stops, but instead they either come with meat sauce or tsatsiki sauce. I usually end up hitting Portillo’s or Doggie Diner twice when I come back.
Right now, I could go for a beef and sausage combo.

in the village is pretty good. Apparently there are a couple of legendary brooklyn joints around DUMBO. “Johnies” in South Slope Brooklyn is like an institution in my neighborhood. A 60 year old white haired Italian man brings it with a smile and says, “Johnie’s, always fresh, always hot”.
I’ve only been hear a little over 2 years, any native NYC’er could probably point out the best.
IMO you can’t really go wrong with any of the mom and pop places in the outer boroughs. Some of the manhattan places charing 3.00 for a regular slice are rediculous.
DUMBO
I work in DUMBO (I’m here now). Grimaldis is the place that everyone labels “best pizza in NYC”. It’s pretty good, not too expensive. It’s a good place to take out-of-towners.

best deep dish I have ever had… over Giordanos, Lou Malnottis, Ginos east…. is Vita bella in plainfield and 1 in shorewood. best thin crust is Vito and Nicks II. I am so lucky to have these 2 places right across the street from me. Worth a 30 minute drive.

"I'll bring the awesome." -The 'Swish'
Pequod's
on Clybourn is another place I would put above the Gino’s, Lou Malnotti’s, Giordano’s holy trinity. Their deep dish has carmelized cheese around the outside of the crust and the sauce is excellent.
Also, all of you should be thankful that you never lived in Philadelphia. Worst pizza there is. It’s so bad that people traditionally douse it in ketchup and salt. Papa John’s was literally the best pizza in town.
Its good
but the Art of Pizza on Ashland is better.
Ha!
I don’t know, I’ve only been to St. Louis once and didn’t have pizza, but the only pizza I’ve had that was worse than Philly was from room service at a hotel in Puerto Vallarta. It tasted like someone else had already eaten it.
As for Art of Pizza, I agree with Rock that it’s awesome. Their thin crust is excellent and they have an enormous delivery area. Also, Pizza Metro on Division costs a fortune but is pretty amazing, particularly the Garbage pizza.
Anything below, Champaign
From Champaign up there are too many students & transplants from the Chicago area that would not accept a bad pizza, but once you get past UofI it’s all downhill.
St. Louis, Louisville, Charlotte.. it’s just a disaster all the way through. Truely not edible.

christ carter = jim thome
99. Chris Carter, 1B, Athletics
Carter was an in-demand commodity in the offseason after a breakout full-season debut with the White Sox that saw him hit .291/.383/.522 for Low-A Kannapolis while finishing third in the Sally League in both home runs (25) and RBI (93). He was briefly the property of the Diamondbacks after the Carlos Quentin trade, but was then quickly flipped to the A’s as part of the package that netted the Snakes Dan Haren. After wowing team officials this spring, Carter is off to a brutal beginning at High-A Stockton, batting just .122/.217/.220 (5-for-41) without a single home run. As a one-dimensional slugger, Carter needs his bat to carry him to the big leagues, and so far it’s not holding up its end of the bargain.

he had at least three really good full seasons after the contract and one good not quite full season. worth that much money? probably not…but it was the dodgers and then yankees, which is a giant leap from the rockies spending tons o’ dough on hampton/neagle.

don't really have a problem with listing brown somewhere (maybe a bit too high)
those teams were paying like $4 million per marginal win. which was obviously an even more ridiculous sum over 99-05 than it is today.

where is '07 clemens, then?

rule #1 of free agent signings
and even heyman probably knows this: there is never a bad one year deal. the perception surrounding a lot of the deals cited is the atrocious seasons, usually at the tail end of the contract those sometimes mixed in, that make it seem like a x year deal would have been better than y year deal.

i just can't believe that
the dodgers and yankees (especially the dodgers), with money to burn, were so worse off for having kevin brown for at least four of those seasons at that rate, as to make it one of the worst ten signings ever relative to all of the other signings that big, medium, and small market teams make.

we like to throw around the "money to burn" concept
and that’s true to a degree. but it’s still dumb for me to spend $300 on an average meal, even if i can afford it more than mr. toondergovernmentsalarystrook. there’s a reason the teams you cite are moving away from that model.

no argument there.
but brown wasn’t “average” for most of that contract. also, the dodgers must have just started moving away from it (exhibit a: juan pierre, exhibit b: not as big a deal because its two years, but andruw jones).

gotta develop the minor leaguers first
before you can put a plan in action at the major league level. i can’t say i really have a problem with the jones signing. i wouldn’t have done it – i certainly was not SSH pining for the signing because he looked kinda like a pumpkin to me – but it’s an easily defensible signing.

weren't ethier and kemp in the minors and projected when pierre was signed?

projected for kemp
not arrived like ethier. i think you were around for my discussion with robert about whether one should call someone who is in the minors or has played the same number of games as chris snopek and produced just as well should be called a “success.” the dodgers wanted to win last year, too, apparently. still in the bonfire of cash mode.
somewhere in arizona, jerry owens silently weeps.
robert s. side? yes, i think i recall that.
i don’t think the fact that ethier and kemp weren’t ready that day justifies the pierre deal. and if it’s somehow excused because they wanted to win last year, well, i guess we’re at square one.
on another matter, looking at some other atrocious contracts along the way, i found a resigning of one jason kendall signing in 2001 for 6 years, $60 million by the pirates. YIKES.

i don't know if heyman was considering
resignings regardless. i still think jaime navarro’s white sox contract was worse than the kevin brown deal.

Portillo's
I go for the Big Beef (no jokes, please) with sweet and hot peppers, fries and chocolate cake for dessert. If you dine in, you can get a “schooner” of beer (no wimpy mugs at Potillo’s).
On the pizza front, out in God’s country (Batavia, IL) we have Nancy’s (great deep dish) and Rosati’s. Sure, we have Domino’s, Papa John’s and Pizza Hut, but I never go near that trash. And they are building a Giordano’s in North Aurora – 5 minutes from my house! Sweet!
