A Day at the Tropi-can't Field
[Note by The Cheat, 04/20/08 11:56 PM CDT]: I've been sitting here with the editor open for about an hour, paying more attention to the Food Network than I'd like to admit, unable to come up with anything to write, which is becoming far too regular when covering a team playing so well. So here's WU's first-hand account of the game in my place.
* * * * *
I just returned from a place worse than Hell itself - the alleged baseball stadium in St. Petersburg, Russia (er, Florida) and had to relate the experience. I also thought from my up-close-and-personal vantage point I'd give a few impressions on our guys at play.
First, I had paid the egregious price of $40/ticket to sit 11 rows behind the Rays dugout. Once my buddy George and I settled into our seats we began to realize we were in Pedophile Heaven. For the 1 1/2 hours before game time we were subjected to everything Disney that is musical - Hannah Montana, Raven, the Jonas Brothers, you name it. We were also sereneded by a warbling, off-key 10 year old girl who sang both the Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America (that one at the 7th inning stretch). While she belted out the national anthem a group of 8 year old boys had taken the field and "maned" each position. Bottom line - Tampa has gone from playing to the Depends crowd to playing to the "tweens".
For those who mentioned the cavernous, echoing stadium ambience, Kevin Costner (via auditape) touted the referendum that will be voted upon in Novmeber for a new stadium on the site that Al Lang Stadium currently occupies. So we might not have the Trop to kick around by a couple of years from now (the new stadium is only seating 34K, so it appears that no one is expecting big attendance any time soon).
George happened to mention that his daughter is in the same sorority at Florida State as the Sox' podiatrist's daughter. Lo and behold, via the magic of cell phones, the said podiatrist tells us he's at the game, is leaving soon, and sure, we can take his seats behindthe Sox dugout.
We slide over to the Sox side and the guy brings us down to Row A, mid-dugout. The Doc's buddy accompanying him is the Sox dentist (tells us his best buddy is Bart Johnson). Both guys have the actual WS ring adorning their ring finger on their right hand - I hadn't seen one up close, and it's pretty impressive. Within the half inning the podiatrist drives off to his home in Jacksonville, and an inning laterthe dentist takes off. So we have 3 seats to ourselves to see the Sox up close and personal.
(These are how good the seats were - my hand to God, a woman comes up to George, who is 60 and Greek. She's in her 50's, probably, and says to George "I just wanted to say, Mr. Einhorn, that you've done a great job with the team this year. We've followed you down from Ft. Myers, and wish you the best this year." George, unflappably, says "Well, thank you", shakes her hand, and turns toward the game. So we're in the owner's seats.")
For my rundown on our boys:
1. Thank God Swish can draw walks, because he's not "on" the ball at the plate. And his speed fits right in with the middle of the order guys - didn't score on the first single by Thomer (granted, it was roped) and should've been thrown out on the 2nd single by Thomer (catcher didn't come up with the throw). And his hair is grayer than mine, and I've got 23 years on him.
2. O-Cab is steady - the exact same play he made in the 8th was muffed at the top of the 9th by Tampa's SS. Not bad AB's either - he roped his last out to LF.
3. Thomer sucks. Cut him. No, really, he was all OVER it today, and his K was questionable (looked like he held up his swing).
4. Except for his 3b (?!) JD looked overmatched all day.
5. AJ is on fire, JC is not.
6. Q looks OK - steady.
7. BA needs to go back to AA. He looked terrible, terrible, terrible. Ramirez' batting practice hacks looked better than BA's. BA should be the defensive/baserunning replacement only.
8. Uribe is FAT, so maybe that's why he's more patient at the plate. We've analyzed him to death, but he looks here to stay.
9. Danks was DEALING. Froze many guys at the plate, even though he was between 73-89 on the gun. Guys were very off-stride. Also, I was able to look directly into his face every inning he came off the mound as he entered the dugout- he looks confident and intense.
10. Boone sure shook off the "L" from Thursday - looked in command. I cringed when he went out for the 2nd inning of his turn but he did fine.
No real comments on defense (Uribe had a tough play to his right and slipped on the ground-up used tires they call "turf" there) but Danks and Logan were so good there didn't seem to be any tough chances. Fox held Swish when he should've, and sent him when he should've, so maybe our 3B coach is settling in.
All told, a great day to be at a game. Just not in Tampa's crypt, though being mistaken for an owner made our day.

The Trop
It really is an abomination. I went down there the first week it was open. The Sox were, I think, the second team ever to visit there and my wife and I went down to see them. It was April, 1998. Its easily the worst park in which I’ve ever watched Major League baseball. On principle, I’m against public financing of almost all stadiums, but that place really needs to be put out of its misery. The new park can’t be anything but an improvement.
BTW, why is it conventional wisdom that Florida teams have to have domes? I heard Hawk going on about how great the new park looked and how, of course, they had to have a retractable dome? Well, why? The Marlins don’t and they’ve drawn well enough when they’ve won, especially considering the way their ownership has pissed on their fans.

Yeah you can't have day games there, that's for sure
For what it’s worth, the renderings I saw of the new TB stadium proposal lacked a roof. It featured a sail-like tent structure that would appear to keep most fans dry during the rain, but left the field exposed to the elements.

Here's all I got (and it's about the Rays)
I was recalling a particularly whiny post last season in which I was upset that we missed the May ‘07 version of Edwin Jackson
To top it all off, the scheduled starter for Saturday’s game was former Dodgers’ top prospect Edwin Jackson, who hasn’t been good since 2003 and has never experienced any sustained period of success above double-A. When the Sox and Rays meet again for the make-up game on August 27th, with rosters set to expand just days later, I’m sure we’ll see one of the Rays top pitching prospects instead. Andy Sonnastine or Jeff Niemann probably would have little trouble with this offense right now, let alone with another 3 months of minor league experience under their belt.
For his part, Jackson is once again showing the promise that made him the top pitching prospect in baseball following the 2003 season. I was glad to see the Sox take it to him with a much better approach than they displayed against Sonnanstine.
The Rays have a bright future with these 3, plus Rowand’s Cuz, Kaz, Davis, and Price. Niemann, whom I’ve coveted as a reliever for a couple of years, may be the least impressive of the bunch, which is saying a lot.
That’s enough pitching depth to still have a solid rotation if somebody gets injured, or in the more likely event that one or more of them fail to develop.

Hawk and DJ commented that even the players observed the Trop stadium gun to be a couple ticks slow. Danks was his usual low 90’s with the fastball according to both the CSN gun and Gameday…
Jackson was sitting at 94 on CSN touching 97.

Then heads need to roll. The offense is rolling with the worst BA in baseball because of OBP and home runs. Quentin can get on base, Owens not so much. Owens can be a pinch runner late in the game.

For different reasons I agree
I think Alexei is probably a better player then BA, but I still think he should get sent down first, but not for Owens, but for someone who can play in the infield.
I’d Rather keep BA up just b/c I don’t think he’s ever going to be an every day player now, so no reason to put him down to get every day at bats, and he makes a good defensive replacement late in games. Alexei I still have hope for, but I think he should go down to AAA first just so he can prove that he can hit (or that he can’t, either way). No reason to keep him around when Pablo, Bougois, and others can do what he’s currently doing. Owens makes for a better bench player then Alexei in my opinion.
My true preference if we are still in it in June and Alexei hasn’t taken the job would be to just trade for a veteran back up middle infielder and just keep Owens (so he’s not hurting us) and Ramirez (to see what he can do as an every day player) down in the minors.

Guys on the 60-day DL aren’t counted on the 40-man roster.
I think I remember reading somewhere that, because Sisco got hurt so early in the season and won’t pitch in 2008, they can apply for another option year on him, but I could be wrong.

Ramirez definitely needs work in the minors, but he is more valuable to this club because he has speed, versatility, and is an obvious hit among his teammates. BA on the other hand is an underachiever who has only screwed him self by not putting in the work needed to be a quality major leaguer. BA has way more talent, size, and defensive ability than Swisher but Swish will out work him any day of the week. BA should stand for Bad Attitude.

Agree withb larry, WTGTD
BA is a better defensive CF, and we occasionally need help there. Watching him shag flies was inteesting compared to Alexei (who I have touted for weeks). He’s just much more polished in the OF. We don’t need his bat as much as the OF help, IMO. Neither he or AR is ready for prime time pitching – the difference is , A-Ram might be, with some work. BA is who BA is, and we all (that’s right, Wiz) may as well get used to it. But he’s more valuable now on the ML roster. No doubt AR is next year.

You make valid points WU
but Jerry can throw the leather around too he just has no arm. I think that the sox love the energy that Ramirez brings to the ball park every day whether he is playing or not. You can see that the players have really accepted him and want him to succeed. I just believe that if JO was in the plans to be a starter this year he should at least have the 4th outfield spot. Ramirez also gives the sox the chance to replace Uribe if they need a pinch hitter. Uribe’s batting is awful, just awful at the plate and I think we all know why. He stands too far off the plate and he uses too short of a bat for his swing. His stance is far too open to be able to stand that far off the plate and use a small bat. When he plants his left foot he is wide open and unless he’s guessing inside fastball he is going to make outs. They should give him a 40’ bat so he can actually make contact on that down and away slider he consistently whiffs at. I have always felt he could be a good hitter but, I know he will never be if he gives up the outside corner like he does.

My son and I watched the Sox last year in Camden Yards. Front row, immediately next to the Sox dugout. Well worth the Stub Hub prices. It was a rare treat for a father/son outing. Drove straight through from Chicago. Camden was fantastic. We even met Boog Powell at his BBQ stand.

Its interesting the you find it harder to write when the team is going good. Was it the same way in 2005? Granted, we are all flint-souled Sox fans who believe in our core that things will end badly, but are we (you) really so jaded that we can’t enjoy this run? Or is it just that, as millenia of dramatists have discovered, tragedy is more interesting (and easier to write) than comedy?

And for hockey, Jim Hughson is where it’s at - I don’t think there’s anyone better. There are some announcers who I can listen to that can pull me into a game just because of how they describe the events unfolding - Hughson is one. Pat Foley is another, as is Vin Scully. Probably Gus Johnson, too, which is odd, because about a year ago I said somewhere that I detested his “obnoxious” style.

The Trop
I am a Southside White Sox fan living in Sarasota, FL. I understand that The Trop is not the most aesthetically pleasing park in the league I do feel that it is unfairly trashed. The park is easy to get to, has plenty of parking (free if you have 4 or more in the vehicle), has ample space in halls and restrooms, and most importantly is an air conditioned dome. Living in FL for 9 years now I can say without reservation that a dome is a must for baseball here. As mentioned the Marlins have led the league in rainouts most every season. What that does not take into account are all the games where it rained (and I am talking about FL summer downpours) during part of the day (usually late afternoon) and you did not have to worry about the game. I know there have been many times that I may not have gone to the game due to rain (or threat of) if there had not been a dome. Also the air conditioning is huge. Forget day games in the summer and night games would be miserable as well. It is just plain hot and muggy for 4 months and sitting next to some old fat guy in the heat and humidity is not the way to spend an evening. Going to The Trop is like going to the movies where you have a fairly comfortable seat and guaranteed comfortable climate. Again I go to many games I would not if not for the air conditioning.
I was at the game yesterday and the whole “Disney” thing can be somewhat annoying. However take note that this was a Sunday afternoon game and it was “Little League” day so the entire experience was somewhat slanted. Saturday night was wrestling night and the atmosphere was very different.
Lastly, while the park is not pretty to look at there are some unique intricacies that help. Thome’s HR on Friday hitting off the cat walk is more memorable because of the structure. I remember that first series that another person alluded to when The Big Hurt hit a ball similar to Thome’s from Friday. It was funny because there were no foul pole extensions way up there back then and it seemed like nobody knew what to do. No when you look up into the rafters there are foul poles hanging from the catwalks stories above the field.
I am not in anyway saying the park is perfect but for someone living here I have really come to appreciate it.

Positives re: the Trop:
-No waiting at food/drink counters.
-Clean restrooms, with your own attendant! (Almost – there’s a guy sweeping up in there.)
-Players hear your comments. (Once the deafening sound system is quiet you can hear the guy in the right field stands from behind the Sox dugout – no, really.)
-Cheap!
-Friendly ticket takers (they are mostly 70 years old)
-A legitimate shot in getting the T-shirts the Rays cheerleaders throw into the stands.
-A legit shot at autographs. Crawford was signing right up to the moment the players took the field.
-72 degrees! Always.
-The visiting team usually wins, so come out and see your REAL team’s performance!

since the days of the first exploding scoreboards. I think Bouton said as much in Ball Four, describing how the Astros fans waiited until the scoreboard told them to cheer. It was just more pronounced in an indoor stadium because of the small, OLD crowd.
Getting bummed out here re: trends of civilization. Must remember Sox are in 1st!
I took the "under".
