Good to see...

Jose has his third straight good outing. I’m happy for him, and I hope he can continue it.

That's who I would have been pulling for.

At least a five run lead going in, give him a chance to shake off the some of yesterday’s shitty outing.

Seriously. I liked the signing a lot...

but Dotel’s conditioning must have gone into the shitter. I have never seen him look this fat and old before. He used to always be in decent shape.

I know, small sample size.

But I could have gotten LARGE ODDS that after 24 games our starters’ ERAs would have looked like this.

G Floyd 2.84
J Danks 3.00
J Contreras 3.98
J Vazquez 4.40
M Buehrle 5.65

Pitching and defense.

by ballyb on Apr 27, 2008 6:15 PM CDT reply actions

Yep.

And the A’s and LAAAAA Angels are the only teams in the league with a better record than us, with the O’s and Rays 1/2 game behind us.

I’m sure all of these trends will extrapolate exactly the same until the end of the season.

I took the "under".

yes, they will

the sox will continue to be top 5 in rbis while staying in the bottom 5 in ba and last in hits.

by MarketMaker on Apr 27, 2008 6:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Your right

People walking in front of those homers, why that is just impossible.

by Tdogg on Apr 27, 2008 9:12 PM CDT up reply actions

It won't keep up...

I love the high OBP over AVG like everyone should but at some point you have to rack up hits to knock in those runners on base. We have failed quite a bit recently with runners on. A lot of putrid double plays to kill a scoring opportunity. The AVG’s need to come up a bit. You can’t expect them to keep coming through with the big hit with such low AVG’s.

by SSH2005 on Apr 27, 2008 11:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Really?????

You mean Swish, Konerko and Thome won’t hit above .240? An avg is still just an avg. Things will even out over time assuming the players are healthy and on the field. And if the players are talking walks and stay reasonably patient then OBP wont become avg dependent. If the OBP is in the middle and the teams slg percentage is in the top half. Sorry that equals runs. I understand your point. But I don’t give a damn how they get on base as long as they do. Sure I would prefer a team avg of .300 but the reality over the past 6 years the team has rarely ranked high in team ba and still scored runs because they hit the long ball.

Focus on whether they can continue to pitch and field decently that is the key to the season…...

by Tdogg on Apr 28, 2008 6:57 AM CDT up reply actions

That's my point... I expect the AVG's to go up...

but it better happen soon or else we will start losing games.

by SSH2005 on Apr 28, 2008 8:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Team BABIP is .258

Which is the lowest in the league. But if I understand that stat correctly, doesn’t that stat being below .300 just mean we’re making contact and getting unlucky?

by vince_ on Apr 28, 2008 11:56 AM CDT up reply actions

well, it's a bit more nuanced than that

not every player/team averages .300 – we’ve got two starters at least in uribe and crede who are pretty far below that. but .258 is really low – unsustainably low. so, yeah, you’re basically correct.

Dude

Carlos Quentin is flirting with a 4 digit OPS after today’s game. He’s not going to keep this up but damn: this guy can hit, run, field and throw!

The #20 jerseys will soon be donned by 1/2 of the females entering the park.

They ought to offer an “amnesty period” where a woman can turn in her #22 for a discount on a #20.

I would be pissed if I was a Diamondbacks fan...

I know they have young studs all over the place but I’d rather have Quentin than an aging Eric Byrnes.

by SSH2005 on Apr 27, 2008 11:07 PM CDT reply actions

i went to the DBacks - Dodgers game

on Thursday and it was really heartwarming to see the Dbacks run out an Upton-Young-Salazar outfield when it feasibly could have been Quentin. Also Upton and Young make for one hell of an outfield defense. If anyone should be signing Bonds, the DBacks have room and it would probably put them into contention with the AL titans.

by colintj on Apr 27, 2008 11:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Am I missing something with Salazar?

he’s 27 and in 170 bats in the majors (2006 Rockies, 2007 Dbacks, 2008 Dbacks) with an OPS of .804, which is helped by the .602 slugging this year. Just glancing at his statistics, admittedly I’ve never seen him play and haven’t heard any hype, he looks to me like a .750 OPS kind of guy in the majors when his slugging falls back to where it seems like he should be ~ .400.

I thought that those numbers were more like 4th OF numbers, not taking into account his defense. Does he play a stellar CF?

Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos.

by rhythm on Apr 28, 2008 10:41 AM CDT up reply actions

I was wondering the same thing...

His minor league numbers don’t indicate that he would be such a stud in the majors… but he looks like it. I guess it still may be a small sample size?

Notes

I missed much of the game today. I didn’t see count throw a single pitch-though I did see Q! drive in a run like a man-so no recap tonight.

Don’t look for much from me the next couple of days. I’m headed out of town for a funeral, so I probably won’t be around much and might miss both of the next two games.

On a lighter note, I bought Mario Kart Wii today… Friend code is (4382-2378-3212)... I’m not very good, but I’ll be playing that one a bunch (though not in the next couple days)

I like that

From here on out, I propose Carlos Quentin simply be referred to as “Q!” every time.

Q! with the base hit.

Man, Q! made a great throw from the track.

You know, if two men could procreate, I WOULD have Q!’s offspring.

Any backers?

agreed

i like to think of him as Q, ManQrush, CQ, and CanseQuito, depending on my mood.

i’m also eagerly anticipating the next time i’m on a gamethread and he hits a homer at the cell so i can unleash “Q the fireworks!”
