The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

the sox should not even lift their bats off their shoulders until this guy shows he can throw strikes. he’s had surprising control the last few games but i don’t buy it lasting based on his history. hopefully the sox are the team to get him back off track.
free jason bourgeois
Indeed...
He still has great stuff but he can’t get it over the plate consistently. But when he is getting it over the plate, he is almost unhittable. I would love to see what a good pitching coach could do for him.
glad to see you give the orioles' management the same benefit of the doubt you give the sox'

I can't complain...
Danks and Floyd look great and Contreras is even pitching decently. Buehrle and Vazquez will come around.
it was a "baseball" decision
only to the extent that trembley apparently didn’t like mazzone’s style. or, perhaps more appropriately, saw mazzone as a bigger figure than him and a holdover from perlozzo and, thus, a threat. obviously it’s not good for two guys in those positions to not be able to work together for whatever reason. but trembley (and maybe mazzone) perhaps should have made a better effort to get it to work. mazzone is obviously a better coach, setting aside these other differences, than kranitz.

I'm sure you know this, SSH, yet at the risk of being redundant:
“In his book, The Baseball Economist J.C. Bradbury titles a chapter, “How Good is Leo Mazzone?” Using statistical analysis, he analyzes whether Mazzone had a significant impact upon the pitchers that he coached. The sample is all pitchers who have pitched at least one year under Mazzone and one year under a different pitching coach. Bradbury found that Mazzone lowered the ERA of pitchers by an average of .64 points, and that after leaving Mazzone, pitchers’ ERA increased by an average of .78 points. Bradbury believes that such an impact is deserving of Hall of Fame consideration. [2]”
What WOULD we do with an extra .64 run/game?
I took the "under".
by winningugly on Apr 28, 2008 12:56 PM CDT up reply actions
Hmm
So how do they control for age and park factors? Those would be my questions, and I’d use something better than ERA to show effectiveness.
And league
I mean, how many pitchers came from the AL that Mazzone then took over? An ERA drop is expected regardless of how good he is.
And I’m not saying there isn’t a demonstrable effect from Mazzone. I’m just skeptical until soundly proven.
do you seriously think
someone would do a study without attempting to account for these things?
free jason bourgeois
The numbers wouldn't prove it, anyway
They’d just confirm a likelihood or trend. Do with it what you will. The point is, he’s not an idiot, and some folks believe, and numbers support, he brought a great deal of value to his pitchers.
It’d be interesting to see what Coop’s numbers would look like with the same study.

Farmer just said on the radio that the game will be played eventually but that right now the infield is covered. They are waiting for that fabled “window” to get going. Its really crummy outside right now. I’m glad I’m not out there watching this one but I don’t want a rain-out either. Baltimore is not coming back anytime this year, so scheduling a make-up would stink. They’ll wait a long time to get this in.

Since at least 9 this morning an hour west of Chicago, no rain though. Either way it’s basically a blizzard outside, so they couldn’t play in this weather anyway. Closer to the city it sounds like it’s raining.

White Sox | Quentin, others to be encouraged to run more
The Associated Press reports Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said he’s going to push OF Carlos Quentin and others to steal more bases. “We’re slow,” Guillen said. “You watch the same game I watch. We don’t have a speedy team like Tampa Bay or Minnesota. But one thing we do, so far, we run the bases well. I want to push Quentin and a couple other guys to steal more bases. I don’t want people to come in to town and think if we don’t hit home runs, we’re not going to score.”
I don’t think encouraging Q to run is a good thing
if the throw wasn’t off yesterday Q would have been out comfortably
Q is fine doing what he’s doing
I’m afraid this will make more harm than good if implemented
The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.
Q running more
While my mancrush is slowly moving from Joe Crede to Q, I don’t think the guy should run “more,” but at opportune times is fine – pitchers napping, catchers with rag arms, etc. As already pointed out, he got a really nice jump and still would have been pegged easily if it wasn’t for a lousy throw.
Am I imaging things, or is Q’s approach at the plate extremely similar to Jose Conseco? Crouched down, waving the bat, with a quick, powerful swing.
"We're gonna bring it all day, everyday...we're gonna keep grinding it out." - Nick Swisher (4/1/08)
RE: Canseco
That is a reasonable comp, unfortunately Quentin has already passed Canseco’s 40-40 year in terms of age.
As for the other stuff: large frame, decent speed for his size, good outfield arm, plate discipline, plus power. I doubt Quentin will ever hit the 40 homerun mark, but I wouldn’t be super shocked if it happened. If he is really beyond all his injuries, then he may finally be able to fully to tap the power potential.
On the plus side
Q is not an admitted steroid user or to my knowledge a complete douche bag. To get to 40 home runs naturally isn’t very common. If Q gets on base at a high percentage and hit just 30 HR’s he’s still a steal for us.

Chris Stewart back in the majors...
Yankees purchased the contract of catcher Chris Stewart from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Stewart’s stay figures to be a short one if Chad Moeller clears waivers. If some team decides to pick up Moeller, then Stewart could stick as Jose Molina’s backup. The Yankees would look to upgrade, but Stewart’s as good of an option as any free agent, assuming that Damian Miller can’t be coaxed out of retirement.

Ed Farmer wants you to know:
Daniel Cabrera is 6’9’’. Apparently this needs to be noted every 3 minutes.
At least Ramirez lasted

In general, making contact is better than striking out 24/7...
Obviously not all contact is good but the more you hit the ball, the more chances you have of actually getting a hit. Hard to get hits when you are missing the pitch by a foot.
Sorry, Juan Uribe is not Adam Dunn...
He doesn’t walk a lot to make up for his pathetic strikeouts. He just hits the random ¡Profundo! which hasn’t really happened much this season. I would rather see what someone else can do. Dangerous ground here
But what Ive seen of Ramirez from Spring Training till now is that he often likes to swing first pitch. I’d say over 50% of the time, and I would imagine that he was particularly geeked up with the bases loaded.
So: I may be wrong about the first-pitch swing percentage and I’m projecting with the “geeked up” assessment and “shocked” should have been “surprised”...but I stand behind my irrationally arrived-at observation. Flame away although it’s probably not worth the time.
