i know oc hit into the dp, but i blame that inning on ozzie
leadoff walk, pitcher with control problems, and he puts the hit and run on. that’s horseshit. after the dp, he walks another guy. awesome ozzie. so anxious to “manage” he didn’t pay attention to what was going on. that blows.
by MarketMaker on Apr 28, 2008 4:36 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Didn't he do that in another game recently?
I think in games where the Sox offense struggles Ozzie uses the rule: If “Need To Make Something Happen” and OC (The Bat Handler) is up—> Hit and run. And OC hasn’t handled the bat well either time.
by hitlesswonder on Apr 28, 2008 4:40 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
sometimes tough to handle the bat well
when the other team knows what ozzie is likely to do and either pitches out or pitches a nearly unhittable ball (which is what happened in the prior situation to which you refer).

the predictability of ozzie in these situations is a whole other aspect of the problem
but why would you want to make people swing against a guy with control problems? he’s giving you baserunners and adding to his pitch count and ozzie decides to take the pressure off the pitcher and put it on his hitter. it’s horseshit imo.

do hit and runs get batting averages up?
by MarketMaker on Apr 28, 2008 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
depends.
people were whining on here earlier about how the sox aren’t hitting the ball enough.

by larry on Apr 28, 2008 4:51 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
do you think the white sox will continue to score at the same rate if the team ba remains where it is?
by MarketMaker on Apr 28, 2008 4:54 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
shouldn't RS go up due to the low BABIP?

sure
scoring is a bit more of a function of OBP and slugging than it is batting average. i would have thought that would be commonly accepted, at least on this board, by now.
free jason bourgeois
by larry on Apr 28, 2008 4:57 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
do you think the white sox can maintain the same obp/walk rate if they do not begin to hit better?
i know how runs are scored, it just seems unlikely that teams would not challenge the sox more if they do not raise their ba.
by MarketMaker on Apr 28, 2008 5:03 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
because there are teams (and i might add, fans) still dumb enough to look at batting average?
again, who cares about that. OBP and slugging are more important. teams often don’t challenge hitters who have low batting averages because – you guessed it – they hit the ball far when you do. this isn’t a jerry owens batting average we’re talking about. there’s some significant punch behind it. worry about slugging and OBP. batting average is cute but it’s usually window dressing.

by larry on Apr 28, 2008 7:14 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Juan Pierre has nothing to do with this argument...
How many runners did we have in scoring position that didn’t score because none of our hitters could manage a measly single? Unless the Sox expect every pitcher to walk or HBP runs in, they better start hitting for some AVG as well. Not every pitcher we face is Daniel “Wild Thing” Cabrera. I realize that OBP and SLG are more important but AVG is important too.
by SSH2005 on Apr 28, 2008 7:18 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
you want someone to lift the sox' average
there ya go. you want someone to hit a measly single, he’s the poster boy. first or second in the league in singles ever since he became a regular.
always need something to complain about, don’t you? you spent all offseason complaining about sox players like jerry owens and so on who all they can do is hit for average and can’t hit for power or get on base frequently. now that the sox have addressed that concern with marked improvements in both categories, you’re back to batting average.
free jason bourgeois
by larry on Apr 28, 2008 7:24 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't want Juan Pierre...
I want OUR players to lift THEIR batting averages. What is so tough to understand?
So you can only have OBP and SLG and you can’t have all three categories? Quentin seems to get it and he has barely played a full season of baseball.
You are wrong and you are arguing with me just to argue. I’m sure you will have to get the last word in though.
by SSH2005 on Apr 28, 2008 7:30 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
and you're whining because you want something to whine about

sox cant close the deal
how many baserunners have they had? had the o’s on the ropes in the ninth and couldn’t close the deal

Not to mention that the two boppers (30 mil between them)
can’t get it done in these clutch situations

It sucks that the two boppers can't get it done at game's end
when they’re paid $30 mil between them…

i don't really care at all about how much money they make
or how they happen to do in any single at bat.
dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.

you mean you realize that if a hitter is successful in 1 out of 3 tries in such a situation that's pretty good?
why are you here?

If I had to put a slugger up in the ninth with 2 out and a man on in the final game of the WS. It would probably be Quentin, not Konerko or Thome1
by SoxfaninAZ on Apr 28, 2008 6:02 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah, of course you would because quentin is hitting the snot out of the ball right now.
will you say the same thing if he hits .220 in may?

Other than 2 real good games from Thome. And a grand slam in one game by Konerko. Those two don't do crap in the 4th and 5th spot.
When was the last time they won a game with a HR in the 8th or 9th inning. They’re old, overpaid, and over hyped!
by SoxfaninAZ on Apr 28, 2008 6:09 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Should be 3rd and 4th hitters. I guess i remember players like Dick Allen, Smokey Burgess, and Oscar Gamble. Those were players that put you on the edge of your seat, late in a ballgame. Thome did late in 06. But since then, Konerko and Thome and now Dye.

c'mon...it's late april. plenty of time to make sweeping generalizations!

I said, inthe beginning of the year that Quentin would hit 25-30 HR's. And I bet his HR's will be more clutch than Thome or Konerko's.
Teams have learned how to pitch to the Sox 3rd, 4th and 5th hitters!

you said he "could" due to playing in the cell...not that he would.

by Toonderstrook on Apr 28, 2008 6:49 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Your probably right. He could, not he would.
I did’nt mean 25-30 in the cell. I should have said 25-30 Hr’s total for the year. And that playing in the cell could aid him in acheiving that.

Hey I am really bad at looking up numbers...
can anyone tell me what Thome and Konerko make? The combined number is preferable.

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.
