Minors -- April
Looks like even I'm not exempt from the newly imposed 75 word limit, so I'll just say that Lucas Harrell is gonna open some eyes this year, if he hasn't already. He had a great debut in his first game after arm surgery following the '06 season. 5 IP, 1H, 1BB, 4K

Is trying to convince me he shouldn't be in the bigs platooning with Thome.

I kind of feel for the guy
It's gotta be pretty demoralizing for him to be at Charlotte, it's going to take some effort to get into the right frame of mind.

Nice job...
by Charlie Haeger yesterday.
I'm hoping against hope that he can take a big leap forward this year and justify keeping him around for the long haul.

Big storm killed most of the action Friday
Charlotte was the only team to get a game in
Fields went 0-4 3K and BB bringing his season total to 0-8 6K 1BB
Poreda had allowed 3 runs by the third inning when the game was postponed (power outage) with the bases loaded

I think that tells you all you need to know about eggy
Charlotte's played 4 games -- Haeger, Ohka, Broadway, Whisler...
Hard to believe a fully healthy Egbert would be starting behind all of them

yeah
i didn't even know whisler was going to be in charlotte.
i'm fine, however, with extended ST for egbert if that's what he needs. he's on the 7 day, by the way, along with carrasco.

ely
"Warthogs starting pitcher John Ely was stellar in his Carolina League debut as he tossed six innings of shutout baseball, but did not factor in the decision. Ely, a top-rated prospect in the White Sox organization, limited the Hillcats to two hits without allowing a walk and striking out five."

poreda
[W-S J]:
Aaron Poreda, a first-round draft pick by the parent Chicago White Sox in 2007, settled down after a bit of a rocky start to go five innings, and the Warthogs’ bullpen finished strong from there....Poreda, a 6-6, 240-pound left-hander who is rated as the top prospect in the White Sox organization by Baseball America, made his Ernie Shore Field debut and endured some early-inning struggles.
Poreda gave up a run in both the first and second innings, but was able to work himself out of jams and then finished by retiring the side in order in two of the final three innings he pitched. He gave up five hits and one earned run, walked three and struck out two in five innings.
"It seems like it’s been a month since he’s thrown," said Blackwell, referring to the fact that Poreda got only brief work after an opening-night game at Kinston on April 4 was suspended because of a power outage. "Once he got a sweat going, he seemed to settle down and make some pitches.
"He threw a few too many pitches, though. We’d like to have him go a little deeper in the game."

For whatever it's worth....
On April 9 White Sox 3rd round pick of 07 threw 6 innings of 1-hit shutout ball (no BBs) in his first start of the season for Winston-Salem.

he has "3rd Rd. Pick - 07" on the back of his jersey.

ha...sorry guys.
Not sure why I didn't put his name in the post. BTW, Josh Fields two more hits today (SUN)...now over .350. JO with another 0-4, putting him at 0-8. And on a very random note, former Sox prospect Kris Honel (who informed KW of his retirement last summer) is now at Springfield (CARDS' AA) and struck out 5 in two scoreless innings of relief today.

Egbert made his 2008 debut tonight.... in AA
I’m not sure why they sent him back to B’ham, but I assume it’s only temporary.
He gave up a run on 5 hits in 5 innings, struck out 4. Everything was on the ground. His 1 run allowed came on 5 consecutive ground balls, the first two found holes, the last three pushed 1 across.
He stole my man Harrell’s spot in the rotation, but Harrell picked up the win with some scoreless relief….
Also check out one Charlie Shirek—23rd rounder with top 3 round talent. He fell for a variety of reasons, Sox took a run at him and got him to sign for about 5th round money.
Righthander Charlie Shirek is an even bigger enigma at Nebraska. He has the best pure stuff on the staff, with a fastball that has reached 96 mph and features good sink and run, as well as a solid slider and changeup at times. But his delivery is shaky and he hasn’t fooled hitters, getting touched for a 6.39 ERA entering the NCAA regionals. After losing his spot in the Cornhuskers’ weekend rotation in mid-April, Shirek was arrested. Police charged him with vandalizing a bike and a car and said his blood-alcohol level at the time of his arrest was .158. He was briefly suspended and has pitched just three times since rejoining the team. He strained his oblique muscle in the Big 12 Conference tournament.
He’s off to a killer start, as he probably should coming from Big 12 ball to Low-A ball. 9 hits, no walks, 16 K in his last three starts (18.2 IP) Look for him to be quickly moved up the chain.

The Knights got another strong pitching performance from Lance Broadway (3-1, 1.25) who went eight innings, giving up just five hits and striking out six. Jason Childers (1-0, 1.00) came in to relieve Broadway and picked up his first win of the season.

broadway
No IL pitcher has exemplified workhorse quite like Charlotte RHP Lance Broadway (White Sox). He’s averaging 7.2 innings per start after last night’s handcuffing of Norfolk (8 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 SO, 1 HR). The 15th overall pick in 2005, Broadway has gone 3-1, 1.25 in 36 innings this season, and while he’s struck out just 19 batters, he’s been stingy with walks (eight) and home runs (three). Efficiency has been the name of Broadway’s game: He’s throwing strikes with 64 percent of his pitches and keeping the ball on the ground (2.37 G/F)
