WOW, some nice hitting
Hooray for Jermaine, this doesn't stop my wanting to see you in left-field but continue your hitting and I will be happy.
gameday is showing the In play, no out. Did Paulie not score from second on a two-out base hit?

single right to delmon
vince coleman probably wouldn't have scored on that.

Say what you will - I believe Crede is leading the effin' MAJORS in RBI's with 10.
What a pisser - my wife calls me to dinner and I miss the granny by a few pitches. Women.
I took the "under".
surely PK would score from 2nd on an owens single.

seriously
Joe just raised his trade value to a high B prospect. In addition to blowing the lid off his year long WPA.
WAY TO GO JOE! Prove me wrong about you being washed up damnit!
Our boy Joe comes through again
Boy he has won many games for us. Konerko though is still a poor baserunner, poor being different than slow.
it totally does

It's not just this game though
It didn't really work last season, but prior to the terrible '07 team, new thread mojo worked most of the time.

dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.
Joe has some bad looking swings
for pop-ups but when he concentrates he is a different hitter. Late-inning Joe, as Hawk says.
smallish sample sizes in some cases but
1-3: .716 OPS
4-6: .736 OPS
7-9: .793 OPS
extras: .863 OPS
"Aw, how could he lose the ball in the sun, he's from Mexico."
so there's a little something to it?
ha, oh Joe you enigma
dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.
there's a lotta something to it
though i believe he's best in the third inning (outside of extras, which is the small sample size alert - but fits the trend)
"Aw, how could he lose the ball in the sun, he's from Mexico."
That's actually pretty unusual.
Most hitters do worse in the late innings (from having to face the other team's best relievers).
by The Jerry Royster Experience on Apr 7, 2008 5:45 PM CDT up reply actions
all the more reason to call him clutch crede
if you define clutch as being better than your particular norm.
"Aw, how could he lose the ball in the sun, he's from Mexico."
in his career, crede hasn't really been spectacular in late & close situations. he has been a little better than konerko and a whale of a lot better than dye, though.

reality check
Early in the game Hawk gave a long treatise on why it’s OK to bunt to break up a no-hitter in a close game, but against the unwritten laws of baseball to do so in a blowout. He recalled a game pitched by Moe Drabowsky of the Kansas City A’s where a "little second baseman from Washington" (he couldn’t recall the name) did so in the late innings.
One of the things I like to do is to match memory against facts. Turns out Hawk had SOME of the details right. Drabowsky did lose a no-hitter on August 20, 1963, when Don Blasingame bunted for a hit, and it was the Senators’ only hit of the game. But it was not a late-inning effort to break up the no-hitter. In fact, Blasingame bunted to lead off the fourth inning, with the Senators down 5-0. I don’t have an updated copy of the unwritten laws of baseball, but I don’t think no-hitters qualify for bunt immunity until at least the seventh inning.
good work. if you're going to do this with any fair share of hawk's memories, i hope you have a lot of free time.
Just because you are a character doesn't mean you have character.

In the last year, I have'nt seen him
do much with men in scoring position. I know that having Dye struggle last year, probably forced him to try to do too much. Resulting in ground ball DP'S to third. He draws alot of walks and hits for avg. usually. And solo HR"s add to his OPS. i think having Dye hitting might take the pressure off of him now. And he'll try to hit too all fields and let the HR's come in due time. I think stats are deceiving, I watch games alot, and he just has'nt come up with many big hits since he faced Rivera and hit the opposite field HR. Dropping him to 5th or 6th might be another option. Maybe I'm wrong I don't know!
do you know if this is that jeff guy from arizona who used to write posts
about how he played against anderson in college and didn't like ba's strut?

Back from the game. Great victory.
Re. Fukudome.
The word was that the Sox offered him more than the Cubs, but he liked the broader recognition of the Cubs.
What was Williams plan? We had Swisher and Quentin at that point.
'08-to-date --- 1 triple to RF against the Sox.
I read that the Sox wanted Fukudome in CF and offered him more money than the Cubs...
Fukudome took a bit less money from the Cubs because he wanted to play RF and also be the team's first Japanese player. We already had Shingo and Iguchi.
what's more believable is the bigger marketing opportunities with the cubs
sure, the sox may have offered a couple million more in salary. but that's probably a pittiance compared to what he can command in endorsements - especially in the likely scenario he continues to play the way he has.
somewhere in arizona, jerry owens silently weeps.
Cold enough for ya?
Someone had pity on me and gave me a ticket when a client backed out. I don't care what you say bally, baseball in April is cold brrrrrrr when you're sitting in the shade and I refuse to wear a snowmobile suit to a baseball game. But who cares if the Sox win, Joe Creeeeeeeeede woohoo!
Jeans and 4 layers.
This morning seemed warm. I thought it would be balmy. When the sun was out, It was nice. But it was chilly. I was in 540, 1st row behind handicapped section. Bit breezy up there. Being a mile or so from the lake, both parks can really reek havoc with dress. You can always take it off.
Remember Pete, dress appropriately.
Great game. My biggest concerns - defense and Contreras / Floyd. Defense looked good today, but the early games were terrible. Unearned runs are just hard to digest. Worse is a 7 spot w/ no errors called (G1).
'08-to-date --- 1 triple to RF against the Sox.
swisher was traded for in january
fukudome signed in mid-december.

scratch that
since atlanta and Milwaukee haven't played yet, we are the #1 run scoring offense in the majors.
Looks like the village idiot
may know a little bit more than you give him credit for. Hey cheat you still sure we are not going to win 90?
by Where Triples Go to Die on Apr 7, 2008 6:21 PM CDT reply actions
I'm still sure about that.
It's been a nice five games, but it'll take more than five nice games to convince me that this is a contender.
That said, fun fact - the White Sox never won as many as five games in a row in 2007. The last time they won five in a row - Aug. 10-14, 2006.

Oh give me a break!
I will grant you that it has only been 5 games. The point is... the reason why we have been winning is the reasons why I stated we would be awesome this year... before the season.
by Where Triples Go to Die on Apr 7, 2008 6:32 PM CDT up reply actions
i don't remember you saying anything
but that's because 3/4 of what you write is unintelligible
dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.
I think certain
players on this team have really stepped up. Crede, Uribe, and Dye have played great! Quentin's been a pleasant surprise. I think Contreras is the key to this teams future. If he can just pitch somewhat consistently, this staff might be alright!
Not that I am The Cheat
But I could see us winning 90... I think this is largely dependent on if Cleveland and Detroit pans out or not
My biggest points during the preseason
were that the bull pens of detroit and cleveland would fail this year. Another point of mine was agreeing with Kenny that we should re-up our veterans including Crede and trade Fields. I have never been sold on Detroit's starting pitching.
by Where Triples Go to Die on Apr 7, 2008 6:39 PM CDT up reply actions
Agreed regarding D-Towns pitching
I also had some Mich. Friends tell me the same thing.
Glad I finally started to post, I started lurking when I was living in London

Or does it seem like we have 10 new regular contributers?

When I really started to find all the excellent baseball (and Sox) related resources online. I've been on and off here and at Soxtalk since then. I even wrote a couple of guest posts for Cheat in 2006.

There wasn't a single moment in time last season
when you could feel as good about the Sox as you do this season. What a relief, another repeat of last year would've been absolutely brutal - let's keep our fingers crossed and hope we see some good baseball all year.
Today's win was especially encouraging
as it had that "plodding along" feel to it...yet they figured out a way to win.
Last year, oftentimes they'd plod along and then figure out a way to lose.
"We're gonna bring it all day, everyday...we're gonna keep grinding it out." - Nick Swisher (4/1/08)
i agree, last year there were a lot of games where down a run or 2
a comeback seemed impossible. not to mention innings without 1 real hitter coming up. that sucked.
Last year, if they were down by a run by the 4th you felt the game was over
And you were usually right.
Why are you reminding us?
