PK! Anyway, back to Thome
He only has 2 BBs in 30 PA's. Small sample size etc, but even if he isn't hitting you'd expect his walk rate to stay stable wouldn't you?
I cat imagine such a huge part of his game would just fall off the table.
I don't think there's much precedent for it either.
dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.
I know, I'm worried
He's had plenty of slumps in the past two years, but he always managed to draw his walks. Ain't happening now.
that is reason to not be concerned really
stuff without precedent often stays that way

7 games, little early.
Sox without Carlos Quentin, 0 - 2. Sox with Carlos Quentin, 5 - 0.
Not really
Check out his BB% graphed throughout the year on fangraphs. Pretty erratic the past two seasons and the trend in '07 is not pretty

There's actually...
usually a spike in walks late in a good hitter's career, as pitchers still show respect, but the hitter knows that he can't catch up with the good stuff anymore.
It's actually pretty rare for a hitter to lose a good batting eye.
Anyhoo, it's a bit early to be worried about Thome. Check back in three weeks or so.

I know, that's what I thought too
They lose bat speed and can't catch up to stuff, so they lay off of more pitches and draw more walks. He's going the other direction, which is kind of strange. The way this offense is scoring, it's not like there's pressure on him to expand his strike zone. It's not logical Captain.
Best explanation is that his swing is off
pitches that he thinks he can so damage too become outs or misses.

Couple more here.
Sox without Carlos Quentin, 0 - 2. Sox with Carlos Quentin, 5 - 0.
Why are we swinging thru these?

Holy hell.
dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.
A variation on a theme.
A solo homer in each of innings 3 - 7 and we could head into extra innings.
Sox without Carlos Quentin, 0 - 2. Sox with Carlos Quentin, 5 - 0.
Provided, of course...
that the Twins don't score.

Testing DJ's statement
# of hitters to qualify for the batting title and hit over .300:
1965-1975: 198
1995-2005: 473
dj wins
1st time in Uribe's career.
4 pitch walk.
Sox without Carlos Quentin, 0 - 2. Sox with Carlos Quentin, 5 - 0.
Okay, that's kind of crazy.
Crede has put the ball in play hard five times this year, and has two doubles and three homers.

Farmer:
One over the wall will get us within 2.
I'm serious.
Sox without Carlos Quentin, 0 - 2. Sox with Carlos Quentin, 5 - 0.
These two used to come up with some useful stuff they got from talking to the coaches
They're such idiots that I don't think anyone wants to talk to them anymore, now they just make shit up.
unfortunately DJ feels the need to tell his own story for everyone Hawk tells
and Hawk is always telling a story
I don't even care if they make shit up
Hawk is too lazy to even do that, he just spins out the same old same old.
I don't like Harris
dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.
Because he punishes us?
I liked him at Tampa - always seemed to be in the middle of something good.
I took the "under".
yeah well now he's a dick.
dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.
He's pitching out of the stretch when he allows
his own baserunners. They haven't scored (yet). He's a stat man.
I took the "under".
fuck. Nick Magic is an asshole.

Here's how bad that walk was...
...was reading in BP today - Delmon Young, dating to last year, had gone 97 AB without a walk going into tonight's game.
Saw somewhere else
That he had seen the fewest pitches per PA of anyone else in the majors this year
This is the Masset...
we all know and love.

I was waiting for this to happen
I feel real bad for the guy, to be honest

The Twins had scored 23 runs in 8 games before THIS.
Sox without Carlos Quentin, 0 - 2. Sox with Carlos Quentin, 5 - 0.
So, I was working late and got home...checked on the game...
And by golly, I didn't miss a thing. That's the positive spin I've got...
So, that McCarthy trade is really paying dividends tonight. Thanks Texas -- you really helped the Sox out.....
Is that playing the game the right way?
If you're losing, is there supposed to be smiling in baseball?

At least the Scrubs are suffering. Not like us, but a little pain is good.
I took the "under".
Royala team ERA is about 2.28 as we speak.
Sox without Carlos Quentin, 0 - 2. Sox with Carlos Quentin, 5 - 0.
Anyone know?
Have any other MLB players that have had the same surgery as Joe Crede gone on adn stayed healthy?
I love the guy, but I keep waiting for him to swing real hard, collapse and be done for the year.

Stat of the game.
Piranhas - 7 BB.
CWS - 1 BB.
Sox without Carlos Quentin, 0 - 2.
Crede
not hurting his trade / free agent value (notwithstanding Colin's fine analysis yesterday).
Sox without Carlos Quentin, 0 - 2.
It's a good thing we had a longman like Masset...
to give up 5 ER in 3.2 IP. It might have actually been a game without him!
every bullpen of a contending team needs a long guy to go 4 or 5 innings once a week, after all.

Masset
If Masset wasn't here to get shelled on the mound, we would have had to put McDougal, Thornton, Wasserman, etc. out there. Yeah Masset might not have kept us in the game, but this team needs someone to take a beating when Danks, Contreras, or Floyd goes down in the 3rd, because it will happen again.
fratdaddy.blogspot.com
agreed. that goes back to the whole origin of the masset discussion,
which is that if you need a guy like nick masset, you aren't going to be very good because your starters are getting killed.
