by colintj on Apr 9, 2008 8:36 PM CDT reply actions

PK! Anyway, back to Thome

He only has 2 BBs in 30 PA's. Small sample size etc, but even if he isn't hitting you'd expect his walk rate to stay stable wouldn't you?

by ChicagoPete on Apr 9, 2008 8:37 PM CDT reply actions

I cat imagine such a huge part of his game would just fall off the table.

I don't think there's much precedent for it either.

dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.

by colintj on Apr 9, 2008 8:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I know, I'm worried

He's had plenty of slumps in the past two years, but he always managed to draw his walks. Ain't happening now.

by ChicagoPete on Apr 9, 2008 8:39 PM CDT up reply actions

that is reason to not be concerned really

stuff without precedent often stays that way

7 games, little early.

Sox without Carlos Quentin, 0 - 2. Sox with Carlos Quentin, 5 - 0.

by ballyb on Apr 9, 2008 8:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Not really

Check out his BB% graphed throughout the year on fangraphs. Pretty erratic the past two seasons and the trend in '07 is not pretty

by 3E8 on Apr 9, 2008 8:42 PM CDT up reply actions

There's actually...

usually a spike in walks late in a good hitter's career, as pitchers still show respect, but the hitter knows that he can't catch up with the good stuff anymore.

It's actually pretty rare for a hitter to lose a good batting eye.

Anyhoo, it's a bit early to be worried about Thome. Check back in three weeks or so.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Apr 9, 2008 8:43 PM CDT up reply actions

I know, that's what I thought too

They lose bat speed and can't catch up to stuff, so they lay off of more pitches and draw more walks. He's going the other direction, which is kind of strange. The way this offense is scoring, it's not like there's pressure on him to expand his strike zone. It's not logical Captain.

by ChicagoPete on Apr 9, 2008 8:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Best explanation is that his swing is off

pitches that he thinks he can so damage too become outs or misses.

dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.

A variation on a theme.

A solo homer in each of innings 3 - 7 and we could head into extra innings.

Sox without Carlos Quentin, 0 - 2. Sox with Carlos Quentin, 5 - 0.

Have any other MLB players that have had the same surgery as Joe Crede gone on adn stayed healthy?

I love the guy, but I keep waiting for him to swing real hard, collapse and be done for the year.

It's a good thing we had a longman like Masset...

to give up 5 ER in 3.2 IP. It might have actually been a game without him!

by SSH2005 on Apr 9, 2008 11:01 PM CDT reply actions

Masset

If Masset wasn't here to get shelled on the mound, we would have had to put McDougal, Thornton, Wasserman, etc. out there. Yeah Masset might not have kept us in the game, but this team needs someone to take a beating when Danks, Contreras, or Floyd goes down in the 3rd, because it will happen again.

by Raf on Apr 9, 2008 11:51 PM CDT up reply actions

agreed. that goes back to the whole origin of the masset discussion,

which is that if you need a guy like nick masset, you aren't going to be very good because your starters are getting killed.

Just because you are a character doesn't mean you have character.
