Around SBN: New York Giants Super Bowl XLVI Ring Unveiled

My first impression of seeing the White Sox play in person – damn this team is slow!

[T]he only possible solution to the problem is that Jerry Owens is recalled from AAA and inserted into the starting lineup immediately.

But the fact is that the only reason Quentin even made the opening day roster was because of the injury to Owens. Quentin doesn’t bring any unique skills to the current lineup. He’s basically just another slugger that can hit for decent average from time to time but would only attempt to steal a base in extreme conditions.

I think it goes without saying that the above does not represent my opinion.

But since I gave it the Bissinger tag, I thought I should point that out.

I’ve been around more than I thought I would the last two days, but I still didn’t really get to see the game… So yet again no recap.

I’ll post a sort of April retrospective, where are we now type piece sometime tomorrow afternoon

Here's a fun stat

Quentin has 52 total bases in his one month on the Sox…

Owens had 111 total bases in his 3+ months last season…

Did I mention that Q has added 14BB and 6 HBP? Owens? He had 27 and 3 in his 3+ months.

AIM: SouthSideCheat

by The Cheat on May 1, 2008 12:51 AM CDT reply actions

Can you really say he's wrong?

Isn’t Quentin just another slow-footed slugger? The Sox have enough of those. If the opposing pitchers had to worry about some speed on base, the rest of the team would hit better. That would more than offset the loss of power from Q to Owens. The Sox haven’t been a winning team without Pods leading off.

I mean if there’s two things we know from the 21st century Sox it’s:
1) Speed and Ozzieball win games.
2) Home runs are bad baseball.

With the Sox offense struggling they clearly need to bench the player leading the AL in OPS and insert Owens. They also should start stealing and bunting because giving up outs like that should fix everything.

I defy anyone to argue against that logic.

If we had a sarcasm font, we wouldn’t have to wonder…although I don’t think this is the best example because hitless laid it out nice and clear.

How do I get a picture in my quote?

Pitching and defense.

by ballyb on May 1, 2008 9:45 AM CDT reply actions

get owens

on the field immediatly… swish can take quintens role… and we can trade jermaine at the deadline? I can not watch games where we are waiting for 3 run homers. You can also tell that this is not the type of offense that Ozzie wants.

by Where Triples Go to Die on May 1, 2008 10:18 AM CDT reply actions

Jerry Owens

is Carlos Gomez minus the potential. I never want to see him in a Sox uniform again.

Trading JD might not be a bad idea, but I’d MUCH rather have BA out there than Jesse Owens.

by mjthor on May 1, 2008 10:24 AM CDT up reply actions

yeah

To me it’s obvious that one of our big 3 has to go. Konerko can’t be traded. Thome is probably making too much for a team to want him (maybe the Yankees though) so Jermaine is probably the only option. Then move Swisher down in the lineup. JO and OC at the top with a high OBP guy like Swisher batting 3rd is way more dangerous then what we have now.

by rhombusface on May 1, 2008 10:26 AM CDT up reply actions

Doesn't JD have a not trade clause this year?

I thought that was part of his deal from last year….

by BobbySouthSide on May 1, 2008 10:30 AM CDT up reply actions

Yep - so does Thome

Thome has a full, Konerko now has a full, I’m not sure if Dye’s is full or limited. In any case you’d have to find the right team for any of them to agree to a trade.

by Brush Back on May 1, 2008 10:32 AM CDT up reply actions

I wish there was a

way to break those three up in the lineup, but I don’t think there really is?

by BobbySouthSide on May 1, 2008 10:37 AM CDT up reply actions

Would anything be accomplished

by moving Quentin to 5 and JD to 7. Probably not cause NO ONE has any speed. Hate to say it but maybe an extended JD groin injury would be a blessing in disguise.

by rhombusface on May 1, 2008 10:40 AM CDT up reply actions

JD and AJ helped carry the team in April

JD is still productive. I wouldn’t mind seeing Quintin in the 4-hole with Konerko at 5 and JD at 6 or 7.

Swish
O-Cab
Thomer
Quinten
Konerko
AJ
Dye
Crede

Anyone else concerned that Swisher is trying to do too much (too many things at the same time) at lead off?

His mindset, his thoughts.

“Be very, very selective, so you get on base.”

NO! (mid delivery)

“Drive this one.”

by ballyb on May 1, 2008 11:05 AM CDT up reply actions

Nah

He is the perfect leadoff guy right now – OBP of .381 and OPS of .725 is exceptional for a leadoff hitter. Keep him there. There isn’t anyone else we have that we could move up in the lineup anyways.

They arent waiting on a three run homer

Runners have been on and they havent gotten the hit lately. Singles and doubles work just as well in that situation as homers.

Awesome, I learned something today

And now for you to learn something.

You can turn off the caps lock function when posting by pressing the caps lock key. Just to be sure that it’s off, you’ll notice that on the right hand side of the keyboard there is a light with “Caps Lock” written under it. It’s right above the number pad if you’re having trouble finding it. When you go back to writing up “bill of ladings”, you can turn the caps lock function back on by pressing the caps lock key again. The light above “Caps Lock” will come back on and you can go about your business.

Mmm-Kay. If you could just go ahead and do that, it’d be great. oh yeah, and don’t forget to put that cover sheet on your TPS reports, new company policy and all.

“IT HARDLY NEEDS TO BE SAID ANYMORE THAT WHEN TEXT IS SET IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS IT IS MUCH MORE DIFFICULT TO READ. THIS IS BECAUSE MOST ADULT READERS ARE SO WELL VERSED IN THE LANGUAGE THAT WE NO LONGER READ WORDS AS STRINGS OF SINGLE LETTERS, BUT WE ACTUALLY READ WORDS BY RECOGNIZING ENTIRE WORDS AT ONCE. WHEN A WORD IS WRITTEN USING lower case letters THE FULL SHAPE OF THE WORD BECOMES APPARENT AND WE ARE QUICKLY ABLE TO RECOGNIZE AND READ THE WORD. WHEN WORDS ARE WRITTEN IN ALL CAPS THE SHAPE IS JUST A BOX AND THE READER IS THEREFORE FORCED TO READ EACH WORD LETTER BY LETTER SLOWING DOWN THE READING PROCESS CONSIDERABLY.”

A future outfield of Swisher in LF, BA in CF, and Quentin in RF sounds pretty good to me...

defensively and offensively. Since it looks like Konerko is here for the long haul, it appears that Swisher will remain in the outfield.

by SSH2005 on May 1, 2008 11:36 AM CDT up reply actions

BA in CF

everyday scares me.

Also, what about Dye at DH and Konerko at 1B in 2009,
then, Konerko at DH and Swisher at 1B in 2010?

"Jenks, who was never afraid to say "no" to a hamburger..."

by BobbySouthSide on May 1, 2008 11:41 AM CDT up reply actions

Nothing

Suggests Swisher wouldn’t be able to at least play LF or RF in 2010 if he is playing a serviceable CF right now. He’s more valuable as an outfielder then as a first baseman.
Dye can play 1B so that’s always an option if you move Konerko instead (assuming he doesn’t block a trade).

CQ, Swish and whoever probably makes for a very serviceable OF the next 3 – 5 years.

by Grinder in Training on May 1, 2008 1:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Dye's only signed through

2009, I thought? He’ll be 37 in 2010…not sure I want him even at 1B then.

by Toonderstrook on May 1, 2008 1:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Regardless

If Dye is gone, you still don’t put Swisher at 1st while he’s still a solid OF, it doesn’t make sense to me. Put Fields at 1B and Konerko at DH if you have to, or just pick up a DH / 1B there are normally a few serviceable ones available.

by winningugly on May 1, 2008 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions

No it isn't

Neither of those guys are any good offensively either. It would be nice to have someone with an .800 OPS at 2B. Let me know when we find out who in the organization that is….

by hitlesswonder on May 1, 2008 11:21 AM CDT up reply actions

I know your comment was a tad bit 'off-hand'

and you probably didn’t mean .800 as a hard-and-set figure, but there were only 11 second-basemen last season in all of baseball who had > 400 PAs and held an OPS above .800. I’d love to get a full list of names but unfortunately, I think that’d require a Baseball-reference PI subscription.

Anyways, my point is that we don’t even need an .800 OPS from our second baseman. A .750 OPS at the bottom of the lineup would be more than acceptable. Hell, even a line like Iguchi’s from last year (.340 OBP, .382 SLG) would be fine. We just need something better than the crap (offensive) we’ve seen there this seen (insert Uribe, Ozuna and Ramirez’ combined OPS+ here). I know the Sox have been semi-hamstrung because of the Richar injury, but the Sox could certainly use even average production at that spot.

Of course, this is also magnified because The OC has been a steaming pile of dung this year, too.

by CWSKeith on May 1, 2008 11:44 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree with all that...

I picked .800 as what I would like, but I’m that’s way above league average. I guess picking .700 would have been better inasmuch as I think neither JO or BA could do that.

Anyway, the SS and 2B positions have been a big drag on the Sox this season. Cabrera you can hope for a rebound to produce at a .700 OPS rate at some point. I think Uribe is what is he is. If I were Kenny, I’d be looking for an upgrade at 2B….

by hitlesswonder on May 1, 2008 1:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Probably waiting as long as possible

To make sure the rest of the team is worthy of adding to. I’d say if we are still in it or near first in a month or two he makes a deal.

immigrants outside my office right now…insane. I think I see Alexei Ramirez out there too – I guess since Canada said no to Cubans.

He just spoke in spanish which was translated as:

“Let me into Canada, I promise I will not touch Canadian women in inappropriate ways or shoot a pig farmer like my teammate Juanito. I also do not eat much and probably will only have a corn muffin for the entire weekend series. Fidel, let my people go! I also think we need to bring Jerry Owens up from Charlotte – we need speed at the top of the lineup. Anyone happen to have a taco? I’m hungry.”
