Before we focus on tonight's game.....
just a note that Aaron Poreda had another solid outing today for WInston-Salem…..7 IP, I ER.
poreda
5/17: 7.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 K, 2 BB
The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.
Again, that stat line screams "Good fastball" to me.
Well, that or lucky. But he’s been maintaining a pretty low hit rate for a while now, so it’s probably not luck.
dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.
I want to thank the Cleveland Indians for not keeping Ryan Ludwick around...
Nice to see him doing quite well for the Cardinals…
116 AB
.336 AVG
.406 OBP
.724 SLG
1.130 OPS
10 HR
28 RBI
Royals lock up their young closer Joakim Soria...
Royals signed RHP Joakim Soria to a three-year contract with options for 2012, ‘13 and ‘14.
It’s rather odd that Soria would give the Royals all of the option years like that, but they’ll probably be under pretty favorable terms. Unfortunately, Soria has been so good this year that it appears unlikely that we’ll ever see what he could do as a starter. He certainly has the varied arsenal to get through lineups three times per night. Soria, who turns 24 on Saturday, just gave up his first two runs on Thursday, but he recorded the save anyway, making him 11-for-11 on the season. If the Royals keep him in the closer’s role, he’ll probably be an elite reliever for a long time.
This guy may be...
one of the best closers in baseball right now, and for a long time in the future.
Rule 5 is made for finding closers
dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.
Cabrera, Ozuna, Ramirez, Hall
AND a pitcher’s spot? Be still, my beating heart!

Yeah, I heard on WSCR 670 that...
Uribe will likely be out until Tuesday, although he may pinch-hit tomorrow. Crede is out tonight with general aching and soreness. The guy on The Score made sure to note that it wasn’t from his back.
That lineup it fucking hot.
The Giants announcers...
are already starting to alibi about the umpiring.
It’s a bad sign for Buehrle, though.

That really was a good at bat for Ozuna
as much as he sucks. Wow.. did Q just crush that ball.

Probably going to have to go yard

He really better go to the bench
When we go back to AL play and can use Thome at DH.
by Grinder in Training on May 17, 2008 8:20 PM CDT up reply actions
At least he can still draw walks...
I really liked the idea of Anderson getting some playing time this weekend. Oh well…
Yeah me too
I think Ozzie may go that route once Thome is useable I just don’t think he’s going to take them both out, and maybe wait for Uribe to come back too, unless Alexei decides yesterday wasn’t a fluke.

In Game 42....
I believe Pablo has contributed positively in the 1st inning more than he has the entire season.
Don't look now....
but we actually like a good team for the first inning plus tonight….
4 pitch walk to get to Q!?
dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.
Remember the mid-90's when
columnists complained about Frank Thomas not swinging the bat enough….
I think that just happened right there with Q….
AIM: SouthSideCheat
He's our Bonds, I tell ya.
Infuriatingly disciplined. Unbelieveably talented. Walked way too often – puss pitchers.
I took the "under".
Ha ha
I think.. until someone else on the team starts hitting, if anyone is on base, he should just swing at balls until he has two strikes just to make sure he doesn’t get walked.

friggin change up
dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.
Guy throws 8 out of last 9 pitches for balls...
...and you’re swinging at something in the dirt. Good eye JD.
balls.
dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.
swinging on that change was the difference there, i think.
dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.
God damnit
Zito is just begging to get lit up and the Sox are content to let him off the hook. Two bad he pitched around CQ wit no no protection.
Lollygaggers.
dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.
Maybe they'll end up beating us 2 of 3.....
but these Giants are dreadful.
I agree
Just needs to get some at bats, in AAA preferably for me just b/c I think he’s probably not quite ready for the big leagues.
Hard line drive for an out, a home run and a walk yesterday. Today another single, and a walk so far. Of course.. it’s the Giants so you take it with a grain of salt, but you can see what he can hopefully do some day.

Couple of comments
Was I the only one who didn’t know that a runner getting hit by the baseball (i.e. the Ozuna play on Dye’s grounder) results in a hit for the guy at the plate?
Also, Jerry—did you have tickets for any of the games this series? You’ll have to forgive me for being sort of ignorant of the west-coast… are you not that close to it?
Even though the Sox are up early, this has been a pretty miserable start. Dye’s had some horrendous at-bats, and that half-swing on the 1-0 “changeup” (Zito’s changeup looks average at best—I’ll have some more comments on him (not that anyone cares) in the post-game thread) was particularly pathetic.
I'm thinking of going tomorrow.
I’ve got to pick my wife up from the airport tonight.
I live pretty close – it’s about 45 minutes by public transportation from my house.
by The Jerry Royster Experience on May 17, 2008 9:00 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't agree....
yeah disappointing that JD didn’t come through….but otherwise they look fine.
Yep.
We have 2 runs in 3 innings. We had 2 all last night. No 2-out hit by JD. So now we suck?
Lighten up – we’re in the lead.
I took the "under".
"Miserable" was a bit of an exaggeration on my part
I’m just a bit miffed that the Sox have had a shot to knock Zito out of here early and haven’t come through with that ‘big’ base-hit (Swisher and Dye’s at-bats, namely).
Zito is going to get himself out it looks like
as long as we don’t give him anything out of the zone, we’ll be good.
dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.
Actually I'm encouraged by the start so far
Having good at bats for the most part. I didn’t like JD’s, but I think he thought 1-0 he’d get a fastball. Not the worst assumption.
dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.
I didn't know either Keith
But then thought to myself you’d end up with 4 outs in the inning if it weren’t the case
About time, Mark
Gotta close these old men out. 2 out hits/walks will not keep you on the mainland.
I took the "under".
Can't believe the only really bad AL teams right now are the Tigers and Mariners.
Even the Rangers are at .500 after a win tonight against the ‘Stros.
nice ab by swish
laid off a curve and a change to get a 3-2 fastball count and Zito wouldn’t put it over.
dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.
he's got a ton of extraneous movement, i'm not surprised

i guess zito must be less than replacement level
if the likes of hall, ozuna, and ramirez are getting to him easily.
He learned everything he knows from Gavin

Oh, the coincidence that Mark faces Zito first
after making the last out. Baseball.
I took the "under".
Pretty easy to hit
When he’s falling behind nearly every batter 2-0 or 2-1 and brings that BP fastball and floating breaking ball.
Does anyone else see a resemblance of Mark and Zito
minus $80MM? Mark is locating better, but Jeez they could be mound brothers.
I took the "under".
certainly not the giants announcers...
dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.
One of them
Is still a major league pitcher.. and if you look at the stats besides ERA it looks like Buehrle will return to at least, well replacement level at some point in his career. Zito is done.

More like the NL thing.
So as a young bon vivant don’t you have something to do tonight? I’ve already been to a wedding, so this is the cherry-on-top of my evening.
I took the "under".
Well
Considering that MB has made a career out of having good command and control with mediocre stuff I wouldn’t say he’s fallen off yet. Zito is like Mark with no control and command, and that pitcher is the suck.
I just know...
the Sox are going to find a way to leave four men on base this inning.

But he’s facing Barry Zito and the giants, so it’s kind of meaningless.

the throw from the knees in the short outfield

It really was
pretty neat he was able to get so much on that throw. Combine that with some of his double-play turns as well as that spin-and-throw from CF earlier in the year and he’s really flashed a plus-plus arm in the field. I’m still getting a read on the other aspects of his defensive play.
