CSTB: Hollywood Loves the White Sox...

This Tuesday, May 20th, TCM will show Jimmy Stewart’s The Stratton Story, the sports bio about former Chi White Sox pitcher Monty Stratton who won dozens of games for the Sox before accidentally shooting himself in the leg. He then came back to pitch minor league ball with a wooden leg. Because it’s a movie about the Sox, you know it isn’t going to have one of those tired rag-tag-bunch-of-outsiders come from behind to win it all endings, because the Sox never do. Best moment of the film for me is when players, knowing he has a wooden leg, bunt on him to make him dive for the ball. After this bit of torture, the camera cuts to Stratton’s disgusted wife (June Allyson) and the grizzled old vet who scouted him (Frank Morgan), as Morgan smiles appreciatively, and says, “Yeah, that’s baseball.” Given the trilogy of White Sox related movies out there that includes Eight Men Out on the 1919 Black Sox and the Jimmy Piersall bio Fear Strikes Out, you can’t beat the South Side for good movie material: violence, mental illness, and corruption. When Bob Odenkirk gets his Disco Demolition Night movie made, it’ll make the Sox the most storied team in movies. I don’t know why I’m not more of a Sox fan, or why Bill Veeck never had free beer-filled wooden legs handed out at Comiskey on Monty Stratton nights, but that’s baseball.

Fear Strikes Out?

Red, not White. Right?

Well, Jimmy did play on a Sox

and broadcast for us for years. So we’ll claim him.

I took the "under".

Odenkirk is making a movie about Disco Dem. Night?

Damn I would love to see that happen, I love Odenkirk. What a wild night that game was, both of my parents were at the game that night.

Biggest crowd ever for a ballgame (at Comiskey), turned away about 10K...

Bad press, a forfeit, but so what?

I was there - didn't they turn away 25K?

I was inside, but I heard they had to shut down the Ryan. Or legend has it.

Oh, what a night.

don't know about the Ryan, but they were scaling the walls

trying to get in.
Bill Veeck was the Ozzie of his day: he took the heat (and there was a lot) for his kid (Mike).

Right there with you

Standing only – was behind home. Scariest part was ducking the flying albums (for you youngsters, those were flat disks like a frisbee), they had serious speed coming at you as you tried to enter the park.

Nice seats!

I was front row, RF stands. What a view. Almost scary – my only experience with a full-fledged riot.

The police weren't called in to create disorder, they were called

in to preserve disorder!

Then you missed Point East!

That was the warm-up to the park.

I was one of those turned away

too bad. the Ryan was very backed up but I don’t recall it being closed.

Show mercy. I get to watch the Rangers.

Field of Dreams was a little bit about the 8 men out. I just mentioned to my girlfriend the other day that we have the most movies made about us.

Props to Steve Dahl

Long-time rChicago adio personality Steve Dahl was the mastermind of Disco Demolition on July 12, 1979.

Check it out for yourself at:

Dahl is still on the air in Chicago mornings on JACK-FM (104.3). He is also a huge Sox fan and owns some sweet Scout Seats at The Cell.

I grew up listening to Dahl

My mom every chance she gets to this day

I give him a listen when I need some laughs

now that Stern and Opie & Anthony are no longer on the air in Chicago.

You bet I did

I woke up every morning to his “Death Defying Cereal and Juice Show,” as he called it, featuring (his puppet voices) Travis and Dick Butt Kick.

Radio guys must like being in Chicago. You can still find Jonathon Brandmeier, mornings on The Loop (WLUP), Bob Stroud (and The Stroud Crowd) on the oldies station and I believe I heard John “Records” Landecker doing a weekend show on WLS. I feel like I’m still in high school.

Because you still have performance anxiety and can't get laid?

(Oh, yeah, you’ve got twin 5 year olds, but that was almost 6 years ago, ‘Gater. What have you done lately?)

I'm married over a decade and have little ones...

so, while I have no performance anxiety, I do find that I have a lack of perrformance availability.

You believe...

I know it – you know the coolest part… my father never knew I was there till just a few years ago. He gave me what the hell else did you do that I don’t know about question and laugh.
Not only that – my kids actually think it was so cool that I was there.

Funny thing is, I really never gave it much thought till they celebrated it a few years ago.

Yep

He was The Man as far as I was concerned when I was in college. Garry was a good foil for him.

Plus, like most entertainers, he was more fun when his life was a train wreck.

I took the "under".

Steve has sobered up (a good thing)

but, indeed, his life is no longer a train wreck, thus the humor level has suffered, especially as a solo act.

To his credit, I believe Steve has made more than one effort to “re-partner” or at least feature Garry to some degree, but Garry ain’t biting.

After Garry walked away from his WLS gig with Roe Conn (apparently $7 million for 5 years wouldn’t cut it for him), he had a brief stint on the old WCKG (before it switched to lite/dull/woman/crap rock). His show was sub-par (IMHO) in that he really didn’t have a solid (or funny…or even witty) surrounding cast. I also believe part of the reason he refused to work with Dahl again is because his wealthy commercial realtor wife “Cindy” has him PWed.
