Cleveland Indians claim reliever Oneli Perez off waivers from the Chicago White Sox

CLEVELAND (AP) -The Cleveland Indians claimed right-hander Oneli Perez off waivers from the Chicago White Sox on Monday.

The 23-year-old Perez was 0-1 with a 9.53 ERA in 14 appearances for Triple-A Charlotte this season. He was 6-2 with a 2.10 ERA and 16 saves for Double-A Birmingham last year.

The Indians plan to add Perez to their 40-man roster and option him to Triple-A Buffalo.

Great.

Now they’ll know all of our plans.

This is bad news

sure Oneli sucked in ST and anywhere above AA, but he’s got a repertoire that’s sure to kill the White Sox…

pedestrian fastball (for a reliever) and a variety of sweeping breaking pitches that he likes to throw off the outside corner to righties. Sounds like a recipe for success.

any idea why did they waive him at this moment?

the 40-man roster was at 39, now it’s a 38

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

Thinking the same Wiz

I can’t figure out why it’s only at 38….

Same here.

I don’t see the need for this sort of transaction at the moment.

no

but they seem to be playing better. and it wouldn’t surprise me to see some of the barons getting a promotion soon, too. it is that time of year, after all.

by larry on May 19, 2008 6:31 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

oh, he was taking space on chrlotte's roster?

who do you see coming up from the barons? fernando perhaps?

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

by The Wizard on May 19, 2008 6:35 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

that would be a reason to do this

fernando would be a candidate if he didn’t miss time on the DL. i imagine he’ll see a promotion soon. there are a couple guys down there who have been pitching well in relief and may merit a push up. torres seems to have figured it out since coming into the organization. rodriguez has been pretty good. none of them are great but you’re not going to know unless you push them at some point. and there are guys at AAA who deserve innings that oneli was otherwise getting.

or maybe oneli stuck his sixth finger into the coaches’ daughter.

why IS youkilis holding the runner on 1st up 7 runs?

"For those that don't understand stats... that ops is horrifying."

by Toonderstrook on May 19, 2008 8:32 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

right. forgot about the high hopper to lowell.

regardless, why was youkilis holding a runner on first prior to that chopper to third with a 7 run lead in the ninth (no-hitter in progess or otherwise)?

"For those that don't understand stats... that ops is horrifying."

by Toonderstrook on May 19, 2008 9:09 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

perhaps because that's what they do

no need to change it up then, if that’s the case. don’t want lester throwing a ball away to first or getting a balk because he’s not thinking. yes, i’m aware that he’s a lefty and should be able to see but i’ve seen it enough to know that they don’t always look over there before doing such things.

by larry on May 19, 2008 9:12 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

sorry.

i should have been more clear. i understand that there was a reason that youkilis was holding the runner on and that it was possible, maybe even likely, that it is his team’s policy or he did so on this occasion at the manager or a coach’s urging. my question is the following: is there any sound baseball reason to hold that runner on with a 7 run lead in the 9th inning, ensuring that the pitcher is paying attention to a meaningless runner?

"For those that don't understand stats... that ops is horrifying."

by Toonderstrook on May 19, 2008 9:19 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

No. Not really.

Can you come up with one?

I took the "under".

by winningugly on May 19, 2008 9:21 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

no. hence my initial question.

it doesn’t make any sense to me in general, and especially not when your pitcher is three outs from a no-hitter.

"For those that don't understand stats... that ops is horrifying."

by Toonderstrook on May 19, 2008 9:24 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

i'm not familiar enough with how pena hits to answer that

and not having your pitcher balk or throw the ball away is a sound baseball reason.

and holding him on in that situation is probably more likely to ensure that the pitcher (and the catcher and the 2b and the SS) is not paying attention to a meaningless runner. if they weren’t holding german on, there’s little doubt that he would have taken off.

by larry on May 19, 2008 9:25 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

maybe they are the "idiots"

if they have to sacrifice having their first baseman in optimal fielding position with a 7 run lead in the 9th to make sure their pitcher doesn’t balk or throw the ball away or that their middle infielders don’t jump when the runner at first takes off (maybe only the other teams ever allow bases on defensive indifference?).

"For those that don't understand stats... that ops is horrifying."

by Toonderstrook on May 19, 2008 9:36 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

hmmm...

but with a 7 run lead and 3 outs to go, aren’t they more concerned with preventing extra base hits (youkilis would have far more reaction time playing at the depth he was when he fielded the second out than if he was still holding a runner on) and the big inning (or, in the situation tonight, concerned with covering the most ground to preserve the no-hitter with such a big lead)?

"For those that don't understand stats... that ops is horrifying."

I run into a guy and his wife – neighbor of mine a few blocks down – at the Y yesterday after working out. The trifecta – he’s a Canadian (US naturalized now), attorney (criminal), Boston fan. Hadn’t seen the MF in a year (we’re that close). Had to hear about the effin’ BoSux and “Papi”. Now will have to hear about the no-no. Crap.

i agree. dwight howard is a beast. love that guy, too.

peja was terrible and the hornets needed him. they need a serious upgrade at either 2 or 3. cp3 is gonna go deep in a lot of playoffs, but they need to give him more support. but lebron? he has the worst group in the nba. if he isn’t on their roster, they are the worst team in the nba. just pathetic.

Why would he call management out?

The Hornets are the 3rd best team in the West, and they are relatively young. Unlike Cleveland, the teammates around Paul don’t quality for a waste of precious atoms.

They surrounded him with players that compliment his skills.. not sure what else he could ask for. Tyson Chandler fits perfectly with him, Peja, David West, those guys are made to play Chris Paul.

Look the same to me.....just with the best PG in the game running next to them.

Pargo getting hot at the most desperate of times and hitting ridiculous 3s, but then eventually missing a potential game-tier….Tyson playing great D and getting rebounds, yet ultimately reminding us he can score as many baskets as we can in the post.
