Bulls #1 pick: Derrick Rose or Michael Beasley?

Who do you think the Bulls should pick on next month's draft, Rose or Beasley? Do you think the Bulls will go in another direction? BTW, I'm leaning towards Rose but I'd like to see what you think.

Here are a few scouting reports I found from their wikipedia pages and google:

[collegehoopsnet]

Derrick Rose: NBA Draft Profile

February 17th, 2008 by Jeff Fox

Derrick Rose

College: Memphis

Class: Freshman

Position: PG

Height: 6’3"

Weight: 190lbs

Accolades:

First Team USA Today All-USA – high school (07), First Team Parade All-American (07), McDonald’s All-American – high school (07), Illinois Mr. Basketball – Chicago Tribune – high school (07), All-State – Illinois – high school (07 & 06), Fourth Team Parade All-American – high school (06), Third Team Parade All-American – high school (05).

Scouting Report:

The best point guard prospect in this year’s draft.

Strengths:

Off-the-charts athlete – NBA athleticism. Is lightning quick on the court. Explosive leaper who can attack the rim. Fantastic one-on-one moves – killer crossover, shake-and-bake moves. Great ball handler. Can beat any defender off the dribble and knife into the heart of the defense to create for teammates or score on his own. Can hit difficult shots over defenders. Quick on defense and can be a tough defender. Strong physique with good body control. Good rebounder for a point guard.

Weaknesses:

Still very young and inexperienced, especially for a point guard. Will take time to learn to run the offense for an NBA team. Not a lot of range on his jumper – hits less than one three-pointer a game in college. Can take questionable shots at times. Playing in Conference USA he didn’t get to go up against NBA prospects on a nightly basis. Despite some highly-touted point guard prospects, Coach Calipari has never produced a top-tier NBA point guard.

Projected 2008 Draft Range:

Second overall pick.

Consensus:

Athletic point guards like Rose don’t come around everyday, so depending on how the rest of the season and the pre-draft workouts pan out, he very well may go first overall. His package of skills and athleticism should make him a star at both ends of the floor in the pro game. With all due respect to Jalen and Malik, Derrick should very easily become the best Rose to bloom in the NBA’s history.

Derrick Rose

NBA Comparison: Dwyane Wade/Jason Kidd

Strengths: A breath taking athlete with terrific size for the point guard position at 6-4 ... His upside is truly special ... An absolutely dazzling dunker with blinding speed ... Likely to be the most athletic PG in the league for years to come ... A point guard in the truest sense of the word. His development in this area has been phenomenal in the past 2 years (which is apparent when you read his profile from a year and a half ago) ... Knows how to run a team, and raises the level of play of his teammates ... A pass-first point guard with excellent court vision ... Has a rare ability to create passing lanes - finding and creating shots for teammates who do not appear to be open ... A relentless defender with quick hands and length. Gets low and will lock his man down on defense and should only improve. Gives the same intensity and effort on both ends of the floor ... Excellent handle on the ball, with a deadly crossover, very tough to contain one on one ... A constant threat to blow by his man off the dribble ... Rarely shows much emotion, very calm on and off-court demeanor, does not get rattled easily ... Plays with a high level of intensity remaining level-headed ... Deadly on the fast break with his passing ability and athleticism ... Powerful leaper. Can get his head at rim level and has the strength to go into traffic and dunk on people ... Catlike quickness and body control ... Excellent finisher around the basket even after contact ... Clutch player who raises his level of play against good competition and wants the ball in crunch time ... Hits his foul shots at a good rate ... Very team-oriented with a great attitude. Willing to learn, very coachable and still improving ... Accustomed to the 'family feeling' with his teams (he is very close with his high school teammates, and his AAU team, coached by his brother, consisting mostly of his high school teammates). Has a close knit group surrounding him and protecting his future ... Tough as nails competitor. A warrior who leaves it out on the floor every time out ... A true floor general who shows a solid understanding of the game. Good decision maker. ... Has very long arms and strong hands ... Loves to drive and hang in the air and shoot when he's cleared the defense ... Very crafty at making shots around the basket, especially fadeways getting great height on his jumpers ... Excellent rebounder due to his size, strength and tenacity ...

Weaknesses: Mechanics on his shot are not fluid, so he may need to adjust it some as he sort of slings the ball from his shoulder, though his shot has shown steady improvement ... A streaky shooter, can go through cold spells ... More effective in an up-tempo game, understands tempo but his speed obviously makes running logical and is still less effective in the half court ... Underdeveloped moves off the dribble. He can become more polished creating shots from the perimeter (ala OJ Mayo) ... Right now relies almost exclusively on his power, handle, and quickness to get by defenders ... Can become a lot better at running the pick and roll ... Has the size to post up PGs all day. He shows great strength and intensity inside but has underutilized back to the basket skills ... Sometimes appears to be coasting during games, though I believe this is when he is getting a feel for the tempo of the game, and he is reluctant to force things ... Not much of a vocal leader, but certainly leads by example. And this is sure to develop with maturity ... A year or two in college will do wonders for his grasp of the point guard position. Easily the toughest to master on the NBA level ... Had a tendency to rely too much on his athleticism early in his high school career, but has developed other facets of his game ...

Notes: With his package of size, speed and talent he's got a legitimate shot to go first overall, which is unusual for a point guard ...

2008 Draft Profile - Derrick Rose

The Best PG in the world not in the NBA? He does everything well and is leading a veteran team in Memphis in just his first year. This kid has 'Super Star' written all over him. The best PG prospect since Chris Paul/Deron Williams, and could easily go 1st overall depending on team needs. Rose would be a GREAT fit with Durant and Green in Seattle.

Draft Profile provided by: Brian Mazique - Explosive first step and 2nd gear to blow by opponents, superior upper body strength allows him to use his body to absorb contact while driving to the basket and taking bumps off the dribble. Possesses great poise, I strongly believe that in the championship game, Douglas-Roberts was mentally and physically exhausted and Rose was a better go to option at that time. He is an above average on ball defender, the nights where he doesn't have a decided advantage on the opposing point guard will be few and far between. He is part Jason Kidd, part Dwyane Wade, potentially better scorer than Kidd, not as explosive offensively as Wade, but a better floor general and distributor. Lacks dependable jumpshot, but does show the penchant for hitting big shots. Barring injury will be top 3 point guards in NBA for next 10 years.

Michael Beasley: NBA Draft Profile

February 17th, 2008 by Jeff Fox

Michael Beasley

College: Kansas State

Class: Freshman

Position: PF

Height: 6’9"

Weight: 235lbs

Accolades:

USA Basketball U-19 Team (07), USA Basketball Junior National Team (07), McDonald’s All-American – high school (07), McDonald’s All-American Game MVP (07), Second Team USA Today All-USA (07), USA Basketball U-18 Team (06), Second Team Parade All-American (06), Third Team USA Today All-USA (06).

Scouting Report:

This year’s Kevin Durant – a dominant freshman.

Strengths:

Exceptional offensive skill set. Incredible inside/outside game – very quick, smooth in the post. Can step outside and drop the three. Able to beat his man off the dribble. Capable of explosive scoring nights. Great rebounder – a double-double waiting to happen each night. Racks up steals and blocks. Has proven to be very consistent in college. Has dominated in one of the top conferences in the NCAA. Has NBA athleticism and jumping ability.

Weaknesses:

Still inexperienced and young – just turned 19 and only played one year of college. Turns the ball over too much for a post player. Is he an NBA small forward or power forward? Can he guard anyone in the NBA – is he quick enough to cover small forwards, strong enough for power forwards? Probably still not strong/muscular enough to dominate in the post in the NBA. Off the court question marks – bounced around at many high schools; questions about his maturity and attitude. Has been compared to Derrick Coleman and Zach Randolph – yikes!

Projected 2008 Draft Range:

First overall pick.

Consensus:

Beasley’s dominant play this season looks to have made him a lock to have his name called first in this year’s draft. While there has been question marks concerning his attitude and maturity, he hasn’t been involved in any incidents while at Kansas State. While he might not be as good a prospect as Oden & Durant last year, if he keeps his head on straight he should be a future NBA All-Star.

[nbadraft.net]

Michael Beasley

NBA Comparison: Carmelo Anthony

Strengths: A fabulous athlete with an NBA ready body... Completed one of the most dominant seasons in college basketball history, as a freshman ... His length, quickness, jumping ability and strength combine to make him one of the most difficult match ups ... He has range from anywhere on the floor all the way out to NBA three, but is especially effective with his soft touch around the rim, where he uses both hands to finish with a variety of moves ... His left handed jump shot is a thing of beauty, with a smooth release, he has good arc and is very balanced getting his legs under him to get great elevation ... Most dangerous out of the mid-post where he can square his man up, and attack with a variety of moves; including strong takes to the hoop, a nice midrange pull-up, or simply shooting over the top of helpless defenders ... From the triple threat his jabs and shot fakes are extremely efficient because he not only has a quick first step, but also a very long one that allows him to get by people at will ... When the defender tries to beat him to the spot, he has a terrific spin move that is virtually unstoppable ... His post game has progressed nicely, and he has shown a nice touch on a variety of hook-shots and fadeaways ... He fights hard to get good position on the block, and even harder when crashing the O glass, as seen by the 4 offensive rebounds that he averaged per game ... His ability to play the passing lanes and come over weakside to block shots, further adds to his ability to fill the stat sheet ... A strong personality with great confidence who never gets down on himself. There are few doubts about him becoming a bigtime impact talent at the next level ...

Weaknesses: Even though he has great length and body strength, he is somewhat undersized for the PF spot at the next level ... His perimeter skills, while effective against weaker competition, may not be refined enough to allow him to move over to the SF position just yet, so there are some question marks regarding his position ... His game is based on sheer athleticism and strength, but his actual basketball skills can use some refinement ... Going right he is very shaky, and struggles dribbling the ball more than twice with his right hand ... He has decent footwork in the post, but an overall lack of go-to moves, forces him to at times get out of control and to leave his feet and throw up some ill-advised shots, although his ability to create in these situations is remarkable ... His mentality is to score no matter how many people are guarding him, countless times, he would find himself facing a double or even triple team, yet he would still opt to shoot instead of finding an open teammate. Something that can be at least partially attributed to a lack of quality teammates ... Averaged a measly 1.2 assists per game, which may not only be a testament to his scoring mentality, but also to his marginal vision ... His decision making is also suspect at times, he gets into trouble by trying to do too much, then attempts to throw difficult passes ... Defensively, he has come a long way from simply wondering around the court, but that doesn't mean that he is by any means a stopper just yet. He has the potential to be an incredible defender, but he has yet to show the willingness to get nasty and play with the same effort on that end of the floor ... Man to man, he is decent and shows improved desire but can improve ... From a team standpoint, he is still not very good at reading angles and being in good help position but that should come with experience ... There is some concern about his work ethic and whether cashing huge checks before the age of 19 will have an effect on his motor.

Notes: His on-court demeanor has looked very good throughout the year, as he has shown no signs of the previous attitude problems ... Off the court he has matured very nicely as well, and most of the problems that have plagued him throughout high-school seem to have dissipated ...

[mynbadraft]

2008 Draft Profile - Michael Beasley

Yet another dominating, fearless, strong, quick power forward at the top of the Draft. Could be another Chris Bosh, but with more size. Smooth off the bounce with countless ways to finish in the lane -- can also hit the outside shot. Could be a great fit for the Bulls, but would also be a great fit for the Sonics (if Durant plays the 3), 76ers, Heat, Kings and Bobcats. Beasley projects to be a starting PF, though perhaps not at the perennial All-Star level.

Draft Profile provided by: Brian Mazique - Extremely talented 3 or 4, with mean streak and swagger. Can play above the rim, but also has good floor game and solid fundamentals. Left handed, with good range on jump shot and good timing on defense for block shots. Coming into college he had a label of a potential problem child, never showed signs of that at Kansas State. Should have been college player of the year over Hansborough, he remind me of a more athletic version of Derrick Coleman. Hopefully, he can maintain his motivation, if he wants to be, he can be a 24 and 10 guy, most of his career, but may never be the best player on a winning team.

I'd love to see Rose in a Bulls uniform.

But I can’t say that I’d complain if Beasley were taken instead. What I want to see is how they start building around whichever player they take. I’d say if they can package some people for a scoring big, then take Rose. I also have a feeling Rose immediately improves some of their other guys, such as Deng and Tyrus.

gonna out-energy a lot of guys, simply by over-attituding them

Deng should benefit

as should Thomas and Noah.

I’ll admit that I didn’t see a whole lot of Bulls games this past season – part of that was me being in Milwaukee, part was me caring a helluva lot more about the Blackhawks and part was a general waning interest in (IMO) a pretty boring basketball team – but I still think the guy that needs to go is Ben Gordon. I know that he can carry an offense when he’s on, but he’s completely useless on the defensive end. His height obviously poses a problem, but I’m also continually amazed by how easy guys are able to go around him on the dribble.

As far as some other random thoughts…

- The one guy I still have relatively high hopes for is Sefalosha. I love those big lengthy guards who can guard, and when I see him play, he strikes me as a guy who has a chance to become a really, really useful asset as a shutdown defender. It also looks like his offensive game improved this season as his PER and eFG% both went up slightly from the prior season (I hope that’s a correct use of those statistics—I’m trying to become beter versed in those stats).

- On the other hand, I don’t have particularly high hopes for Tyrus Thomas, but he’s a guy who could benefit from Rose. I don’t have much hope that Thomas will ever develop much of a ‘real’ low-post game (or a jump shot, for that matter), but the one thing he can do is jump really high and dunk. So I can see Thomas being the Tyson Chandler as Rose is to Chris Paul (if that makes sense).

If the Bulls did get Beasley, I wouldn’t be averse to that. He strikes me as a very unique offensive player… I’ve been trying to think of a comparison - ‘Melo is probably the best comp I’ve seen - but even that doesn’t do Beasley justice.

As the author of at least 100 comments since Monday

It’s pretty much a consensus at BaB that Rose should be the first pick. Beasley would be a no brainer if Tyrus Thomas’ potential wasn’t so tantalizing. If they draft Rose, Thomas and Noah’s value can skyrocket a la Chris Paul & Tyson Chandler. Also, drafting Rose paves the way to trade Kirk Hinrich, which has been the goal of thousands of Bulls fans (at least it feels like it). We get Rose, the Bulls will become fun and exciting to watch again, and in a league were there is now more of an emphasis on PG play than big men, drafting a potential franchise PG could be life-altering for the Bulls.

The case for Beasley is very logical….they’ve needed an inside presence since Brand was traded, and we are now conveniently given the chance to draft a PF who just had one of the most statistically dominant seasons ever in the NCAA. But, there are concerns about size (no one wants the next Mike Sweetney or Kurt Thomas), his apparent “attitude and character” issues (he was basically an attention whore at his multiple high schools, whether he is still like that is up in the air). Drafting him creates a logjam up front with Deng, Tyrus, Beasley, Noce, Noah, and Gooden.

I think with a #1 pick, you draft based on who has the biggest chance to be a superstar. Given how the league rules are now, guards have all the freedom in the world, and a PG with the athleticism of Rose can get into the lane at will, creating better opportunities for his teammates.

Gotta be Rose

I’ve been over at RealGM bulls board and the feeling is pretty much 80-20 Rose over Beasley.

I love Beasley, and those saying he’s “a rich man’s Fizer” (or similiar) are just misinformed. Beasley is a hell of a player, and I’ve love to add him to the Bulls—if they had the 2nd pick.

The pick for this team is Rose. It’s draft Rose and trade Kirk (hopefully shipping out Hughes in the process) and hope like hell he becomes the superstar point he should be.

Rose made me a believer during the tourney when he stepped up big time. I think he’ll be a great, great player for a long time and make Chicago relevent again.

by madvillian on May 25, 2008 10:21 PM CDT reply actions

i dont understand

the whole we must trade kirk sentiment if we draft rose. from what i’ve seen of the bulls (and admittedly it isn’t a whole lot this last year), i dont see what would be so bad with a rose/kirk backcourt. at the very least, keep kirk around as a backup PG because trading him now would be the ultimate sell low move. i would really just want to let gordon go. gordon just kills the bulls when he is not hitting his shots between his horrible defense and taking too many bad shots. i dont want my team to rely on a guy to score when he can be so streaky and inconsistent.

rose would really help the bulls backcourt defense because he can guard the taller player leaving kirk someone to match up against who is more his size. that fills a big hole for the bulls because a gordon/kirk backcourt is too small.

so, i think the move would be to draft rose, keep kirk, and let gordon go.

It is better to be thought of as a fool, rather than open your mouth to remove all doubt

by whitesoxmatt on May 26, 2008 10:57 AM CDT up reply actions

And what about the "hopefully shipping out Hughes in the process" bit?

That’s an incredible pipe dream! Maybe we can get Dwight Howard for Hughes and Hinrich!!

And, Matt, I agree that Gordon should be the one to go over Hinrich. If anything, Hinrich’s a leader on this team of youngsters and could possibly teach Rose a few things about playing defense at the NBA level.

gonna out-energy a lot of guys, simply by over-attituding them

by defensive indifference on May 26, 2008 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Why?

would we want to ship out Hughes anyway? He’s a bigger Ben Gordon who plays defense. He is a perfect #2 to a pass first PG. Rose and Hughes would be VERY tough defensively on other teams guards, especially in the East with teams like Detroit and Boston.

You described Rip Hamilton, NOT Larry Hughes.

Larry Hughes plays defense?

I thought all he did was get hot from time to time and score a few points.

by SSH2005 on May 28, 2008 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I follow the NBA and Bulls very closely

Almost as close as the Sox. There is legit interest in Hinrich as he has a very cap friendly contract going forward and a number of teams are on the “buy low” bandwagon as well. This will drive up his price.

Hughes is an expiring in 2009-2010, so he’s not untradeable.. He has negative value, but it’s not so bad that he couldn’t be easily packaged for a player (Lefrentz?) that is also overpaid but actually gives the Bulls some skills they need.

And Gordon is undervalued by Bulls fans. Playing on a team with no other creators killed him, and he still put up good numbers on decent effciency. He isn’t a star, but he’s a solid starter. Something that couldn’t be said of Kirk last year. And there is no way the Bulls enter next season with Rose/Duhon/Hinrich/Thabo/Hughes all on the roster. One, and probably two, of Duhon/Hinrich/Hughes will be gone.

Anyways, the discussion here is rather lightweight compared to the obsessiveness of RealGM. I find Blogabull not as good as RealGM either. I hate to pimp the site so much but if you want the best Bulls analysis head over there.

Meh

BaB has been infested with people that came along as soon as the Bulls got the 1st pick…not exactly the brightest of the bunch proposing the same idiotic McGrady trade scenarios. The options seem limitless, but in reality there are only a few things the Bulls would…and should do. First and foremost is regardless of who’s drafted, they have to re-sign BG and Deng to reasonable contracts. Kirk isn’t a mandatory trade, only if they can get something of value (like say Corey Maggette, or perhaps some expiring contracts to make a Wade run in 2010.) If there’s nothing out there, don’t panic and trade Kirk…he’s useful as a 2 if they draft Rose, and obviously will still be the PG if they go in the direction of Beasley.

I’m still concerned over Paxson seemingly interviewing every person to ever have NBA experience for the head coaching spot. If Paxson is waiting for the playoffs to end so he can really go after Thibodeau then I’ll understand, but he’s really looking more idiotic as the days go on and the interview list grows longer.

Give me the better shooter

and that’s not Mr. Chicago.
I wish the Bulls got the 2nd pick so they couldn’t be blamed for their decision.

Chicagoans are seriously undervaluing Beasley, who probably had the best college season since Tim Duncan’s senior year. In 32 games, he had just 4 games with fewer than 10 rebs and 2 games with fewer than 15 points. He had at least 20+10 in 23 games. He had 39 and 11 at Kansas. He is a superstar rebounder, can hit the outside jumper (he’s better on 3’s and FT than Rose) and has slick lefty post moves. My only concern would be that he wouldn’t become one of those lazy NBA guys (Q.Richardson, A.Walker, N.Anderson just to name 3 great Chicagoan college players) who just stand around the 3 point line all game. For all of the attitude issues people speak of, he’s never had any sort of run in with the law or a problem with a teammate. He’ll be a 20 and 10 guy for 15+ years if he avoids injury.
Rose will be a good NBA player, likely an all-star type, and the NBA is becoming a PG league, but he’s not Chris Paul or Deron Williams. His shot is average at best and he’s not a big assist man either (less than 5 apg). considering how much he has the ball. His value is in his size, toughness and his history of winning. I like him a lot and I was rooting for Memphis solely because of him, but he’s the 2nd best player in this draft and it’s not close. The 3rd best player is nowhere close to Rose, either. Everyone else is either average or a massive fraud (I’m looking at you Mr. Gordon)

If Beasley were the one from Chicago, we wouldn’t be having this discussion.

by Bull Pain on May 26, 2008 4:43 PM CDT reply actions

Concering Rose's lack of assists

I’m not a Rose apologist, I wouldn’t mind drafting Beasley as long as they know what they’re doing with the roster (ie Tyrus). But, Rose didn’t get a ton of assists at Memphis because of their DDM offense. His value doesn’t just come from intangible things like toughness, but how he uses that toughness coupled with explosive athleticism for a PG to get into the lane seemingly at will. That’s why some are comparing him to Dwayne Wade, not Chris Paul or Deron Williams. Read the SI article on Memphis’ offense, and you’ll figure out why Rose doesn’t get gaudy assist totals.

I know it was talked about on numerous radio shows through out chicago but I think it sounds like a great set up. Melo and AI can;t reallu share the same floor so trade Deng or Noch or both to get Melo in a Bulls Uniform and get Rose to get him the ball.

just checking out mock drafts, i noticed something interesting.

oj mayo will be 20 years, 6 months old at the time of next month’s draft. that means he was 20 years old when he played his first college basketball game as a “true” freshman.

the lopez twins, who played two seasons, will be 20 years, 2 months old at draft time.
chase budinger, who also played two seasons, will be 20 years, 1 month.
roy hibbert, who played four years at georgetown, is less than 11 months older than mayo.

if at times mayo looked like a “man among boys” on the court this season, maybe he was.

Doug Collins expected to be next Bulls coach
Sources confirmed the former Bulls coach is expected to become the new Bulls coach. Collins coached the Bulls from 1986-89 and, as recently as two weeks ago, talked about not wanting to leave his TNT broadcasting job and the family life it afforded him.

But Collins’ extremely close relationship with Paxson, friendship with team Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf (who fired Collins) and the Bulls winning the draft lottery have changed his mind, sources said.
...
Paxson, according to sources, first contacted Collins about the job shortly after firing Boylan. At that time, Collins gave indications he didn’t want to return to coaching.

Change of heart: Doug Collins will not return to Bulls: Collins, Reinsdorf agree to put friendship ahead of job
Doug Collins is a heart-on-his-sleeve type of guy, so when he and his wife, Kathy, sat down for breakfast at their Scottsdale, Ariz., home Friday morning, the obvious didn’t need to be said.

Collins wouldn’t be returning for a second coaching stint with the Bulls.

A 15-minute phone call with Bulls Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf later Friday afternoon confirmed what the longtime friends already knew: Reinsdorf had too many reservations about entering into another business association with somebody he might have to fire.
...
Suns assistant general manager Vinny Del Negro interviewed with the Bulls on Thursday for the first time. Kings assistant Chuck Person and former Minnesota coach Dwane Casey had second interviews with Reinsdorf and general manager John Paxson earlier this week.

Flip Saunders, fired by Detroit earlier this week, has sent feelers about the Bulls’ job, but it’s not believed Paxson has much interest in Saunders.
