Q Ball in the Left Center Pocket

The Cheat asked me to pinch hit for him in recapping tonight's game, so let's get to it: Carlos Quentin was  the White Sox offense tonight, bashing two home runs, including a walkoff home run in the bottom of the ninth, to lead the Sox to a 3-2 win over the Angels at the Cell.  Quentin, who was three for three on the night (along with a HBP), drove in the first two Sox runs on a blast to left center in the third inning that scored Alexei Ramirez.  The homers were Q's 13th and 14th of the season, which move him into sole possession of the American League lead.  Scott Linebrink, who retired the Halos without a hit in relief of Jose Contreras in the ninth, got the win.  But Contreras was No Way, Jose of old: eight innings, two runs (on a Gary Matthews, Jr., homer), three hits, 10 strikeouts and no walks, and that doesn't even tell the whole story.  His splitter was virtually unhittable.  No one even made contact with it through six innings and no one got a hit on it all night.  Tonight's performance brought back memories of his seventeen-game winning streak.

Aside from the Matthews homer, the downsides (and who wants to focus on them after a great win like this?) were few and far between.  The Sox didn't hit all that well, garnering only six hits, but that was really a function of John Lackey being superb, except when facing Quentin.  Orlando Cabrera did get thrown out trying to stretch a double into a triple when the ball got away from Sean Rodriguez on the relay.  But really, that's about it.

The win allows the Sox to maintain their 2.5 game lead on the second-placee Twinkies, who also won today, and it reduces their Magic Number to 111.  Check out  White Sox Magic Number Update to keep track of the Sox progress on their march to the A.L. Central crown.)

Speaking of numbers, here's a little feature we like to call "We do the math, so you don't have to":

  • The all-time record against the Angels is all-square at 329-329
  • The Sox are now 5-2 in games decided in the last at bat
  • They're 4-0 when tied after the eigth inning
  • The team is 23-8 when getting a quality start
  • Tonight's win improves the record to 17-12 in errorless games
  • The Sox are 24-10 in games when they hit a homer
  • The Good Guys are 12-5 in multihomer games
  • They're 18-6 when scoring first
  • The record is 21-7 when holding the opponent to three runs or fewer
  • Finally, the team is 21-4 when outhitting the opposition

Cheat, thanks for letting me pinch hit, and Go Sox!

TY for the recap

Quentin is just unreal. Every time he swings through a fastball or pops up a breaking ball I thing it’s just a fluke. And then he proves me right later, which is awesome.

Lackey hung a bad pitch (he said it was a 2 seamer, but it looked more like a horrible, horrible slider) and Q just knocked the hell out of it.

Q has an excellent eye, which allows him to get ahead in the count. When the pitcher has to throw him strikes it’s advantage Q as he can hit fastballs as well as off speed pitches.

Simply awesome to watch right now.

Hmmm, from the AP recap
Meanwhile, a White Sox team that entered the game with the American League’s second-worst average (.244) provided little support. Perhaps that explains why fans in left-center decided to volley two blowup dolls like beach balls in the eighth inning, only three weeks after the White Sox caused an uproar in Toronto by placing two nude blowup dolls in the clubhouse with bats of the players fanning out around them in a weird slump-busting ritual.

Proving that people get that it was stupid to cause an uproar. Glad our fans aren’t so sensitive they can’t accept a joke and have some fun with it.

Was at the game.

Thought the park was electric tonight. Before the blowup doll made its debut, the beachball was out in full force. At one point it bounced out of the stands and into center. Brian happily tossed it back into the bleachers where it continued its bouncing ways.

Reminds me of the 05 team

I wonder what our record is in 1 run games? Pete Rose always says the team that wins 30 1 run games will win the world series.

Yeah, last night on ESPN radio,

During the game, they said “the Angels always have been and currently are great at winning 1 run games. This year they’re 7 – 7 and the White Sox are only 4 – 5.”

Oh, really? What a difference one game makes.

Pete Rose, if he really did say that, was full of shit...

Since 2004, nine teams have finished with 30 or more regular season wins in games decided by 1 run. Only one, the 2005 White Sox, even played in the World Series.

2004: Oakland (33-19) didn’t make playoffs; LA Dodgers (32-16) lost in NLDS
2005: White Sox (35-19) won World Series; LA Angels (33-26) lost in ALCS; Nationals (30-31) finished in last place in NL East
2006: Oakland (32-22) swept in ALCS; NY Mets (31-16) lost in NLCS; SD Padres (30-22) lost in NLDS
2007: Arizona D’backs (30-22) swept in NLCS

Meanwhile, here are the World Champions’ records in regular season 1-run games in this century.

2000: 20-18
2001: 23-25
2002: 31-22
2003: 30-23
2004: 16-18
2005: 35-19
2006: 22-27
2007: 22-28

you may want to go back a bit further than this century

considering pete rose, if he did ever say such a thing, would have probably been saying it in the 70s or 80s. when he would have been (more) correct.

"For those that don't understand stats... that ops is horrifying."

by Toonderstrook on May 26, 2008 1:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

no matter.

since 1901, 47 teams have won at least two-thirds of their one run games in a season in which there was a post-season. only 18 of them won the pennant (i.e., appeared in the world series). 38% is not usually.

give pete the benefit of the doubt and use only those seasons prior to his big league career, and the rate is still only 42%.

and i still think this was the real problem: “He’s healthier than last year,” Guillen indicated, explaining that Contreras battled back and hamstring pain for much of 2007.

and i still think he’s a big, big concern to wear down over the course of the season. keep those fingers crossed.

i’m sure it was a problem i’m also sure his inability to pitch properly was more of the the problem. it doesn’t take much to view video of contreras throwing last year and this year and see the difference.

I think his Freddy Garcia-like heater was the reason he got shellacked last season.

He is throwing 94 MPH this season with a wicked forkball. It’s pretty obvious that the difference between this year and last year is that he actually has his stuff this season. The divorce excuse is lame and I don’t buy it at all.

One nitpick, actually:

The splitter and forkball are two distinct pitches and I’m pretty sure Jose only throws the latter.

by colintj on May 26, 2008 9:43 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

It's weird

Broadcasters use it interchangeably. Maybe he did throw more of a splitter at one point, but he doesn’t throw it much faster than Haeger throws his knuckler these days.

Never trust a big butt and a smile.

by Sox Machine on May 26, 2008 9:52 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

My understanding

Is that while the grips are similar, the action and intent are decidedly different. One is more or less a changeup, the other, like you say, somewhat similar to the knuck. The splitter basically left the game as quickly as it and Bruce Sutter took over after the whole “it could be fucking up arms” theory became widespread. Anecdotally, I threw one for a long time starting around age 10 or so, if you can believe that, and it was never a problem…until HS when I noticed that the less I threw it, the better my arm felt and the harder I could throw.

dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.

Forkball-splitter

Full disclosure: I’m a moderately good sophomore pitcher at a medium-size high school in the southwest suburbs. I learned both of these pitches pretty early on (‘03-’04, iirc), so I’ve been throwing them for a good 3-4 years. I’ve also had these on a radar gun in game situations, so I know roughly what the velocity difference is.
(Just trying to clarify a little, this is what I’ve got. Feel free to critique/add what you know)

Forkball
Thrown with a much wider grip than a splitter, comes out of the hand roughly 10-12 mph slower than a fastball/ When thrown properly, it has a very slow sideways spin and appears to knuckle a little before its break. The break itself is similar to a 12-6 curveball, but I’ve also seen it tail similar to a 2-seamer for some pitchers.

Splitter
Thrown with a smaller grip. The thumb is pushed forward at the release point, leading to backspin and a sharp, late downward break, with little to no velocity difference from a fastball.

@colintj- I’ve noticed a small difference when I’m throwing a splitter (3-4 MPH), but it feels like it’d be from a small difference in mechanics just from having to use a very specific motion for a split.
