Bullish Pen

The majority of the credit for this win has to go to the bullpen. Coming off a home stand in which they completely shut out the opposition over 12 innings, the White Sox bullpen was handed a one run deficit after 6 and held 'em right there through 12 to run their scoreless streak to 18 innings.

Octavio Dotel, Matt Thornton, Scott Linebrink, Nick Masset, Boone Logan, and Bobby Jenks (in that order) combined to hold the Indians to just 3 hits (2 in the 12th) and 2 walks while striking out 9 in their 6 innings of work. I was a bit upset that Jenks wasn't used earlier in the game, but if you've got a group whose collective ERA is in the twos I suppose they're all good enough for high-leverage work.

Javier Vazquez had a tough night, yet still managed to make it through 6 innings allowing only 3 runs. He was just the second Sox starter this season to allow 2 HR in a game, with the other being Mark Buehrle on Opening Day. For reference, the Sox were 6-25 in such games last season, and have averaged 33 such starts a season, with extremes of 28 and 46. At only two 2-HR starts in their first 51 starts, the home run suppression of the current staff has been simply amazing.

Offensively, it was the top of the order providing most of the punch. The 1-2-3 hitters went 9-17 with a walk and factored into 5 of the 6 runs scored on the night.

Orlando Cabrera seems to be finding his stroke. He had a 4-6 night, hit a couple of nice balls to right field, and finally showed that doubles stroke that he had working in Anaheim. His double in the 7th set up the game tying run which allowed to the Sox to win the battle of attrition between two struggling offenses and one streaking bullpen. It wasn't all rosy for Cabrera however...

OC on the basepaths

Entering the season, I was under the impression that Orlando Cabrera was a good baserunner, which was reinforced by Bill James listing him at +141 from 2002-2007. But my own observations of OC this season, including Sunday's Should I Or Shouldn't I triple, the rundown in the 12th and the non-advancement on the basespaths in the 1st inning, seem to run counter to that. So I headed on over to Bill James Online to take a closer look at the numbers.

Nearly two-thirds (+89) of Cabrera's +141 came from his ability to be highly efficient on his stolen base attempts. (An explanation of James' baserunning numbers is available in PDF form here.) That's not to diminish his obvious skill in that area, as Cabrera again continues to be highly efficient this season with 7 stolen bases against just one caught stealing. But for a player with above-average speed who also excels at stealing bases efficiently, Cabrera seems to be a surprisingly pedestrian, and at times downright stupid, once the ball is in play.

The numbers tend to back this up. The +52 (on non-stolen base baserunning plays) from 2002-2007 would seem to indicate that Cabrera is about a +9 true talent baserunner, but fully half of that positive baserunning (+26) came last season. In fact, from 2004-2006 Cabrera was -2 on the bases (not including stolen bases). It seems that Cabrera had a career season in more ways than one last year.

Other game notes:

  • Jenks recorded his 100th career save, tying him with Keith Foulke for 3rd on the White Sox career list.
  • Late in the game, Alexei Ramirez had what appeared to be a favorable matchup with a primarily fastball pitcher in Rafael Betancourt on the mound, but looked terrible when he was unable to make contact on a hit-and-run which resulted in Crede being thrown out at 2nd. He struck out on 4 pitches in what might have been the ugliest at-bat of the night.

For as bad as Ramirez looked on the hit and run, he made up for it with a great fake bunt, butcher boy sprayed into right field against a drawn-in infield during the Sox game-winning rally.

by the way

that fake bunt last night by ramirez was exactly what i was begging ozzie to do last week in such situations.

The execution of it

was very impressive, game changing at bat. Not sure how many other guys on the team could have pulled that off, most of them can’t even lay down a bunt.

by Grinder in Training on May 27, 2008 9:45 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

well, he didn't lay down the bunt

may have been a smart decision on his part to ignore ozzie’s bunt sign there considering past team history. of course, it was probably even more ballsy then smart considering if he fucked it up…

getting pretty existential there, tdogg

both were obvious bunting situations where we – including the indians – knew what ozzie would call. they’re about as the same as you’re going to get.

I disagree Larry

Different folks up. One was home team while other was vistor. Different pitching situations. Etc. I don’t think you have to bunt all the time in last night’s game. There is a definite benefit to putting 2-3 runs up on the board as the visiting team.

Last week’s game however I’m ordering a bunt almost 100% of the time unless something goofy is going on.

by Tdogg on May 27, 2008 10:01 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

that's nice

what you would do is not relevant. what ozzie guillen and the white sox would do is relevant.

you either missed or are misremembering what my original point was

it was not that last week’s situation was not a situation where ozzie should call for the bunt. the problem is in every bunting situation – as ozzie would define it, which would include last night’s – where he invariably puts on the bunt. there’s no mystery for the other team. there’s not even a question in their mind that a sox player will not be bunting on the first pitch. this makes is very easy to attack sox hitters (and baserunners) in such situations. i want ozzie to at least make the other team consider that a sox hitter may not be bunting on every pitch in those situations.

I understand and agree with you for the most part

I just persnally did not want to see it in last week’s situation. Last night ,even if he made an out, I would have loved the attempt by Alexi to make a bigger inning (by swinging)

Your overall point however I cannot argue with.

Interesting tidbit in the Yahoo recap

"It’s not the way I had it written up," Elarton said. "I just didn’t make pitches—though I was thinking dead bunt with that second hitter and threw it up and away, never thinking for a moment he’d be slashing there."

I agree with larry that Ozzie is really predicatable in bunting situations. Given that most players on the team can’t bunt and the other team expects a bunt, I’d like to see Ozzie get more creative in those situations.

Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos.

exactly

he was going with the same pitch sequence as koboyashi did. elarton isn’t as good as that guy but the pitch he threw would have been difficult to get down. but it was a perfect cookie to slap at.

That Ozzie called the fake bunt and is just being sly with his comments to the press, so he can get away with it again?

by sti3 on May 27, 2008 1:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

anything's possible

but i’m not sure it matters whether he called it or not for the future. if he didn’t call it, but saw how it was successful, teams might think he’ll call it in the future. and if he did call it, teams might think he’ll do it again. or teams will think he won’t call it but players will do it on their own, (especially ramirez of course). whichever way you slice it, it’s now in the other teams’ head.

the winning % is quite a bit different, but the division lead isn't much different at all.

i wonder whether everybody was bitching about the white sox offense and their inability to hit or score in 2005, even though they were hitting in the .250s and had scored less runs than this year. i don’t remember (my memory isn’t quite larry’s), but i somehow doubt it.

We were out of our minds, too – did we have the lead for the first 35 or so games out of the gate in 2005, a new MLB record? I wasn’t on the site then, but I’d wager folks might’ve been more comfortable scorching out of the gate at a .660 clip vs. .560 like this year.

of course.

but the sox are in nearly the same position now in the division as they were then. the point was, despite the fact that certain people bitch and bitch on here these days no matter what the sox do, the wins are what matter, not singles or batting average or “clutch” hits.

and you’re right. people were out of their minds, in large part because they were unspoiled by success and it was unexpected. the sox start is unexpected (by most) this year, too…

I didn't know if...

the Tigers would be as good as everyone said they would be. I didn’t expect them to be terrible, though – very few people did.

I also didn’t expect the Indians to be this bad.

The White Sox are playing about as well as can be expected. I didn’t think that would be enough to compete, but maybe the rest of the division will oblige and keep on losing.

The key, as always, is team health. It’s been said a million times, but the regulars have to play every day if the Sox want to stay in this thing. Keep your fingers crossed…

Konerko...

probably needs to go on the DL, and has needed to for some time. He seems to be seeing the ball pretty well, but he’s unable to do anything with it once he hits it.

He had three really good swings yesterday, and they resulted in a long foul and two warning-track outs. He’s simply not driving the ball the way he should be.

Bullpen

I agree that the big difference this year over the previous two has been the bullpen. In 2005, the Sox had great seasons from Cotts and Pollitte, who could take over from the starter and get the game to the closer. Cotts and Pollitte disappeared in 2006, and the Sox have struggled to make up for that loss ever since. I think that perhaps a key to the great starts that we are seeing this year is the confidence the starters have in their bullpen. I much prefer winning games 3-2, 6-3 in late or extra innings than by outsluggging as the Sox did in 2006. Certainly, the hitting is suffering, but I am willing to bet that so goes the White Sox bullpen this year, so go the Sox.

by VAChisox on May 27, 2008 7:45 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Not to mention...

the fact that Cotts and Pollitte got games to the ninth for three different closers, which ALL worked out somehow.

And while the bullpen was accurately lauded in the recap, I don’t think the defense gets enough credit. Javy was bailed out by great (or at least above average) plays 2 or 3 times. Or maybe after last year, I keep expecting the worst and am pleasantly surprised when they make plays they should?

anyone have those numbers handy - what the average major-league SS is hitting this year? That’s not a bash on A-Ram, either - the Sox finding even a slightly-below-average (if that’s what the numbers came to) SS for a million a year would be quite the coup for the Sox.

Time to move past the generic

“If the the team stays healthy” The Sox are pretty much leading in most indicators among the division rivals with trends that suggest they may get even better.

I’ll just say it. Right now the team is one of the best in the AL.

The starting staff and bullpen is about as likely to get hurt as anyone on Cleveland or Detroit (save Contreras).

Again sorry preseason expectations don’t jive with the current season but its time to realize with the right additions the team can compete for a championship. We are 2 months in I think its fair to say they can compete for the division.
