''If things continue to happen, I'm not going to say we're going to have a problem, but I don't think it looks good to his teammates for him to worry about his numbers, especially the way we're playing,'' Ozzie Guillen said Monday. ''I know I never did that. That's something the manager or coach should do. I'm not going to say don't call up to the box, but it looks kind of bad. When I played, we didn't worry about that. That was for someone else to look at and handle. But the bottom line in all this is whether we win or lose.

''Obviously, a good player, a Gold Glove winner, you want to have a good season for the free agency, and different guys respond to that stuff differently.''

it's BS

for the cash these guys make, they should be broadcasting, via a cellphone or blackberry or whatever, from the dugout.

Total transparency.

This “closed society” is an illusion.

Cabrera should not be treated like a ‘leper’...

....he is a modern ballplayer, a trailblazer.

Players lobbying for a call

not a very classy move by Cabrera and embarrassing to be exposed by Ozzie. I can’t imagine Albert Pujols doing that, I can imagine Soriano however. When given the choice to do the classy thing or unclassy thing I would always hope the player would be classy.

This is the part of the article I liked best

“The one thing that’s becoming evident is that the sides seem assured of going their separate ways once the 2008 season ends, and any talk of Cabrera being inked to a contract extension to stay on the South Side is all but dead.”

Importantly,

are so pissed that cabrera had a good night last night at the plate. they wanted this hatchet job to get some immediate legs. de luca set it up on a platter for cowley and cabrera just didn’t cooperate. but these guys are nothing if not patient with their slams. just wait until cabrera goes 0-4 or something. i know i can’t wait. these guys sure bring the journalist to the sports journalist oxymoron.

In this scenario OC is chum and Cowley and De Luca are sharks. The fact that OC will be gone next year is perfect for them—that won’t lose any important access for going after him with abandon.

Also, I like how setup once again has the motif that moral failings are responsible for being bad at baseball…you know if OC wasn’t so selfish he’d be better.

It’s sad that the game isn’t interesting enough for these bozos—they’d rather report on constructed melodrama and fake morality plays.

journalism

It doesn’t seem like you guys have much of an idea what goes into being a reporter. I wouldn’t blame Deluca or anyone else for a “hatchet job”. And it’s ridiculous to think the reporters care about breaking a trivial story like this. This isn’t exactly Water Gate.

1) The Sun Times is a tabloid and strongly encourages it’s reporters to cover angles like this.
2) When 99% of the stories you cover are players spitting out tired cliches and there is something different to report, you cover it because you think your READERS would be interested.

It really gets annoying reading people on this board complaining and trashing reporters (I’m not talking about columnists) when most have no idea what goes into the job…

from wiki...
Cowley gained notoriety nationally when he admitted on Tuesday Nov. 21, 2006 on the Mike and the Mad Dog show, which is heard on WFAN New York, to be the only writer to vote Derek Jeter in sixth place on the American League MVP ballot. It is important to note, however, that if Cowley had placed Jeter first on the ballot, Justin Morneau still would have won.

That was the second such incident for Cowley; after omitting Blue Jays players Carlos Delgado and Vernon Wells, two top-ten overall finishers, from his 2003 AL MVP ballot, the Chicago chapter suspended him from voting the next year. They accused Cowley of not voting seriously, saying he “embarrassed” the Chicago chapter of the BBWAA.

i'm not POTUS either

but I know some of the things Bush has done wrong.

Part of the problem is systemic, with today’s “24 hr news.” There just aren’t enough things to talk about. This board is proof of that. Esp during the off-season… :) Plus, the quickest-to-press environment is ripe for error, and bent towards sensational stories or conclusion-drawing. Such as (a) Sox had a bad roadtrip > Uribe about to get DFA’d, and (b) Cabrera wants scoring change > team rudderless.

But with the kind of access that these writers have, they surely could come up with better story lines than this…

The guy cares about his stats

so what’s the big deal? It could also be interpreted as being “intense” rather than “selfish”.

And the reality of baseball these days is there are/will be less guys signing on for multiple years, so they are very aware they are also playing for their next contract, probably with another team.

I don’t give a rat’s ass who he calls as long as he produces and contributes to the Sox this year.

Frank reportedly cared about stats a LOT

I’m betting the guys in the clubhouse don’t care much that he lobbied for a scorer’s call. I imagine its a source of humor/embarrassment with the players. They will probably give OrCa serious crap the next time he’s charged with an error.

Yes, OrCa should be embarrassed by it, because it looks selfish, but to say that it shows him as a poor leader, is a projection made up by sports writers and radio guys.

Who would you rather have at this point -- Cabrera or...

Garland?

Jon Garland didn’t allow a run in 7 1/3 innings as the Angels beat the Tigers on Monday night.
Garland allowed just four hits, striking out five and walking three. He left with a man on third and one out, but Scot Shields came in and got a strikeout and a ground out to escape the jam unscathed. Shields, Francisco Rodriguez and Jose Arrendondo combined to throw four more innings of scoreless ball, bringing the Angels’ total to 12 on the night. Arrendondo picked up the win. Garland has made five consecutive quality starts and lowered his ERA over two full points in the month of May.

He's not going to let go one of his few young talents.

Even if it meant sucking out of the pen in the last spot for a couple months while they waited to make a follow up move to get him back in the rotation, they would just suffered through it. If he was Danny Wright bad, maybe he’s gone, but really the chances of it happening were slim to none.
It’s not like Wasserman sucking is ruining the franchise, it would have just been Gavin Floyd taking up that spot.
It shouldn’t be Garland vs. Cabrera though.. it should just be Cabrera vs. whatever else you think they could have got for Garland b/c obviously Garland was moving no matter what.

by Grinder in Training on May 27, 2008 12:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's a tough question.

Williams would have been forced, in essence, to choose between Floyd and Masset (there’s no way he could have justified carrying both in the bullpen).

We haven't finished two months of baseball yet

they’ve exceeded my well beyond my expectations without Garland. But even with Garland in the fold, my preseason prediction would have have been at .500 tops. It was a risk to have Floyd in the rotation, but at the #5 slot, is that a big risk taken? perhaps we could have received more for garland, but anything can be said in retrospect.

Trading garland was the right move

And keep in mind that Garland’s salary = OC + Linebrink.

I would have rather the Sox acquired someone else for Garland, but in the abstract upgrading at SS was a good idea. Specifically targeting Cabrera wasn’t, but if he can get hot and get on base at a .340 clip from here on out all is forgiven.

I wonder if this board would be just as indifferent

if BA, St. Quentin, or Uribe called the pressbox. My guess, since it’s all hypothetical:

BA: He’s cocky and although he’s playing better, he shouldn’t piss Ozzie off (and Ozzie would be pissed and rake hime over the coals).

St. Quentin: He never made the call, The Sun-Times made it all up to stir the pot. Maybe the scorekeeper called Carlos for his expert and perfect opinion.

Uribe: What an a-hole! and he’s fat.

I think what's at issue is the method

Obviously, it is good for both the team and the player to have a player who cares deeply about his fielding stats. The reason why he cares isn’t that important – if its for pure personal gain, that doesn’t matter, because it helps the team too.

Calling up to the press box to protest a blown play – at that point, the team’s goals (stellar defense) haven’t been met, and its just the player looking out for himself. Now, I don’t think this is necessarily that big a deal (certainly not as big a deal as the Sun-Times is making it out to be), but I think all parties would prefer that Cabrera just make the plays in the first place.

No error on the play.

I guess that Cabrera’s argument was that it was not clear if the runner would have been out, even if he fielded the ball cleanly.

Pitching, defense and health.

stats fuel a billion dollar fantasy sports industry

you are right. They are very relevant, like it or not. On every single play in every sport, dollars are made or lost. Both by players and non-players.

tell me some roto-geek wouldn’t be calling the scorer if they could…

Cabrera’s only mistake was lack of discretion. And he is paying the price for that.

Not a mistake, in retro

He’s fueled by intense pride, and the next night he goes 4-6.

Let’s give him a few more E-6’s. He’ll get his OPS up pronto. But you are then insure it will only be a one year contract.

Because after the season ends he’ll sleep with the pirhanas.

I took the "under".

The man is amazing, what can I say?

I saw him give a presentation a few years back at the Paramount Theater in Oakland. Quite interesting.

It seems like he gets a lot of help from his assistant, a graduate student of his. Perhaps you should copy this model?

Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos.

because you probably dont care about your personal performance at your job either, im sure if your stock price goes up but you dont get a raise you are just as satisfied.

not sure why your comment was directed to my post.

i have no problem with what him calling the scorer to tell the guy to take another look. (i probably don’t want him doing it if he’s on-deck in a close game, but that’s another story.)

ultimately, i think this is all bullshit until it comes to the point that a player is not making attempts on balls because of concern over fielding stats. (a first baseman on my brother’s college team, who graduated without making an error, was the king of being a statue on balls in the hole between first and second to avoid having to make tough tosses to the pitcher covering).

ozzie on alexei
Manager Ozzie Guillen seemed half-serious when he said that Alexei Ramirez would have been demoted to Triple-A Charlotte had he not executed an opposite-field single after ignoring Guillen’s bunt sign in the 12th inning of the White Sox’s 6-3 win at Cleveland. But Guillen was delighted to learn that Ramirez is capable of those talents, which will allow Guillen to call for more hit-and-run plays with Ramirez at the plate.

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

I think Alexei needs to be green-lighted more

just to do whatever he feels at the moment. He’s clearly earned it.

Team turmoil
The laughter over a three-man prank before batting practice turned tense Tuesday as White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen and Orlando Cabrera expressed a gulf of difference over the alleged lack of support Guillen has lent toward his shortstop.

But those words were mild, at least in tone, compared to the verbal exchange between reliever Octavio Dotel and conditioning coach Allen Thomas near the first base dugout while Guillen talked to reporters. Third-base coach Jeff Cox stepped in before tensions escalated.

Thomas, through a team spokesman, declined to comment. Dotel joined the rest of his relievers down the right field line during batting practice and was unavailable for comment.

Kenny speaks
General manager Ken Williams on the Orlando Cabrera situation:
"Am I aware of some of the stuff that has been going on with Cabrera? Yes. I also know it has been addressed to him face-to-face. The one thing Mr. Cabrera needs to know about Ozzie is he has faults and his No. 1 fault is that he protects his players too much. If Orlando doesn’t understand that, he needs to talk to his neighbors.’’
