And the gap might already be closing...

The AL home run percentage (100*HR/AB) stands at 2.59 in 2008, down from 2.88 in 2007. That means over the same number of at-bats, the American League will hit 224 fewer home runs this season, or about 16 per team.

That doesn't bode well for a team that hits more flyballs than any other American League team

I’d say they’ve been fairly productive given the handicap.

I might be interested in following up on this - just for fun

I NEVER worked with baseball stats before, but I use stats regularly for my work and I would like to mess around. I would be interested in modeling homeruns as a function of gameday temp excluding games that take place in domes. But I have a couple questions:

1. What should I adjust for? Wind speed and direction for sure, but I’m not sure of what other covariates to adjust for. Maybe league, or produce separate models for both leagues.

2. Where I can get this data readily available??

I know that people normally use Excel for basic stats in this area, but there other tools/software I would like to use. Any feedback would be great.

Thanks!

I would ask the guy from hitttracker what he does to model HR

He lists both raw and “true” distances for every HR tracked on his site.

also i remember reading a THT article about the effects of weather on postseason play

you could probably track that down, too.
