Starting pitchers are good!

by SoxfaninAZ on May 3, 2008 12:34 PM CDT reply actions

i wonder if the yankees or red sox or tigers broadcasters...

talk about how “this is the type of pitcher that causes problems for our team”. i can imagine that they might mention that such-and-such pitcher has a great career record against their team, but it seems pretty weak to categorically determine ‘these pitchers’ own us. some of these guys have never even previously faced the sox. i’m not even sure what’s scarier: that our broadcasters have just decided that the sox should not even be expected to hit soft-tossing breaking ball pitchers or that the sox CANNOT hit the vast majority of these guys.

i wish someone had told me that sss had replaced rationality with caps lock.

He’s hit .236/.269/.312 since June of ‘06. He can’t play defense. Anywhere. He’s coming off a broken leg, and is hardly the speedster that he once was. He doesn’t pound the ball into the ground and run fast to first base anymore. There’s no use for this loser.

Thanks for telling us non-watchers what happened

this another Saturday where MLB doesn’t allow games before 3:30 PM in some markets, Florida being one. So I pay $44/month and do not get to see some games. On top of that the team is not a joy to watch so it seems to be a losing year for me.
Hopefully we’ll start hitting.

by floridajim on May 3, 2008 1:43 PM CDT reply actions

Fire Ozzie Guillen now

He is the problem. We saw this same shit happen last year when the team was barreling down hill and he’s incapable of stopping it. Jim Leyland has rallied his troop after a slow start, that’s not a shock to anyone. Guillen however has proven time and time again that he doesn’t have what it takes. It’s time to give he and Walker their walking papers.

by floridajim on May 3, 2008 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Yea!!

Fuck Ozzie!! Fuck KW! Fuck Reinsdorf!! They all suck!! What good have they ever done?

Maybe Leyland “rallied the troops” because… I dont know… they’re really good hitters who were slumping at the start of the year. I mean, its not like they were a common pick to win the world series or anything.

by SoxfaninAZ on May 3, 2008 1:59 PM CDT reply actions

I am afraid this is just like 2007 and at year's end

we will look back and wonder how we were in 1st place on 5-1. We are now last in hitting in the American League and our OBP is dropping rapidly. I am in favor of blowing up this team and playing the young guys while we try to emulate the Marlins.
The Marlins get good young players, win a title, dump them and start over thereby keeping their costs low and every few years celebrate a championship. Our costs go up every year, the players get older ,and play more poorly and we pray somehow the season will end up well. I think, on the whole the Marlin theory works better for fans.

by floridajim on May 3, 2008 2:01 PM CDT reply actions

Dumping and starting over != championship every few years

It worked once for the Marlins so far. It hasn’t worked for a lot of other teams. I’m not against playing younger guys, but I’m not convinced the slash and burn technique guarantees a championship every few years.

will be 14-14 in 2007 they started 12-11, then 12-14, 10-18, a hot July yielded 14-15, Aug. 9-20 and Sept finished with a flourish at 15-12. I swore I could never live through another season like that never thinking it might be the next one. Oh, well I have lived through worse.

by floridajim on May 3, 2008 2:13 PM CDT reply actions

The Sox might suck this season

But it’s not 2007

Quentin and Danks alone make it better than last season. Danks won some games at the start of 2007 but he didn’t have the peripherals he has now. There’s reason to be pretty optimistic about him. I’m optimistic that Swisher will deliver several goood years to Sox as well.

Last year they sucked with almost all old players. This year they are sucking with some decent young players at least.

by Maestro D on May 3, 2008 2:18 PM CDT reply actions

Heh

Sitting in the library I’ve been listening to Stone and Farmer call the game, and at one point I looked to see just how “good” Ozuna has been since July of 2006. It’s somewhat a case of selective endpoints as he hit better than .400 in May and June, but my God he’s been so useless basically going on two years now.

As far as the offense, I side with Colin in that I think this, for the most part, isn’t much more than a slump. Swisher is better than he’s been - he’s had specific months with Oakland where he was even more terrible than he was in April. I can’t say that I don’t hold some fears, though. First, I don’t know just how far Pierzynski is going to fall. Second, I have some worries about the older core of our lineup - Konerko, Dye and Thome. Positionally speaking, it wouldn’t surprise me to see the first two not a whole lot better than average (when adjusting for position) and I think Thome will fall a bit as well (although he’d have to drop a bunch to be ‘average’ for a DH).

Oh—and that damn Carlos Quentin provides absolutely NOTHING unique to this lineup. We need more speed in that spot of the lineup.

by CWSKeith on May 3, 2008 2:19 PM CDT reply actions

Trade him now! He just does’nt fit in with this team!

by SoxfaninAZ on May 3, 2008 2:23 PM CDT up reply actions

I really think Ozuna should get released

It’s been fun. I’m glad he made some money. But he’s redundant on the roster defensively and he has no value unless his batting average is very high. Any of Fields, Owens, and the Frenchman would be more useful (even with the Frenchman sucking right now he wouldn’t be worse than Ozuna at least).

I’d like to see the Sox send down Ramirez, drop Ozuna, bring up Owens/JB and acquire a 2B that can hit a little (assuming it doesn’t cost Fields).

by hitlesswonder on May 3, 2008 2:24 PM CDT up reply actions

So why not try Q in the 3 spot?

Move Thome to 4th, Konerko to 5th, etc…

by vince_ on May 3, 2008 2:19 PM CDT reply actions

If this were to continue, I think Ozzie would quit! After last years performance a manager can only take so much!

by SoxfaninAZ on May 3, 2008 2:20 PM CDT reply actions

From Cowley

the last 8 Sox home runs have been solo shots, and that’s also 14 of the last 15.

This of course will be framed with the argument that the Sox need more speed in the lineup… not, you know, more timely hitting, more talent.

AIM: SouthSideCheat

by The Cheat on May 3, 2008 2:25 PM CDT reply actions

That's funny

You can lower the number of solo shots 2 ways:

1) Get more people on base in front of the home run hitters
2) Remove home run hitters from your lineup and so lower the number of homeruns.

Sitting Quentin for Owens would do the trick (method #2).

by hitlesswonder on May 3, 2008 2:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Or hit the HR or even double when there are men on base. Instead of when no ones on, and the pressures off.

by SoxfaninAZ on May 3, 2008 2:32 PM CDT reply actions

Being unclutch

Isn’t a big reason for the Sox swoon, in my eyes.

by hitlesswonder on May 3, 2008 2:35 PM CDT up reply actions

This is the faulty supposition that most will make

Hitting a HR is hard. It’s always hard. It’s never easy. You don’t pick and choose the situation in which you hit ‘em. In fact, trying to hit them often yields in poorer results than if you’d just try to put a good swing on the ball.

Pressure has nothing to do with it.

AIM: SouthSideCheat

by The Cheat on May 3, 2008 2:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe pressures too harsh, I agree. Putting a good swing is important. Is it possible teams have found a weakness, and that certain veteran players are’nt adjusting. Maybe a case of, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”

by SoxfaninAZ on May 3, 2008 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Would’nt say pressure has nothing to do with it. A player can put pressure on himself, especially if he’s in a slump. I just feel that when men are on base, and the HR hitters come up. Teams have learned how to pitch to these veterans under certain situations. They become predictable. Many of these hitters live off of pitches thrown over the inner part of the plate. Outside corner pitches are popped up or pulled on the ground to short or third.
