Ozzie Guillen on the possibility of firing Greg Walker: "That's not going to happen. To be honest with you, I don't think we need coaches. Look at the lineup. Everyone is a veteran, everyone knows what they're doing, everyone has experience, everyone went through it. I think you can ask the players. I'm not going to blame Walker about it. Greg is not a babysitter.
"Greg gives the best information and works hard, works harder than anybody and ‘Walk’ sometimes takes this game too deeply, too serious. I bet you one guy who is sick to his stomach now is him. It's not easy to be a hitting coach, it's not easy.’’

You know, I have to agree
and I know it will piss off all the folks that think a few rolling heads (Walk? Ozzie? KW?) will straighten everything out. But it won’t. We’re at .500, and that’s a damn sight better than I thought they’d be at this point in the season. We are in every game (translation: we are not getting blown out) but od not have that special “something” to win the close ones this year. Lack of timely hitting, a key error, the “big” 3 run inning we give up, can’t be overcome for whatever reason.
Look, deal with it. These guys are who they are -streaky, solo-homer, slow professionals who have seen their primes a couple of years ago. (I’m speaking of the hitters.) Pitching is the most promising chit we have, as it has been for the last 3-4 years. Our farm system, really, is dead for the next 2-3 years, and no one wants our vets for what they are worth. Anyone trying to sell a house that was worth 30-40% higher 3 years ago? Good luck getting what you think fair value is in today’s market.
Quit crying, go to the North Side if your loyalty is that flimsy, and have fun. In the meanwhile, we’ll see if we can maintain .500, spoil someone’s party, and enjoy the fucking game and team that so many of you to love and support. The guys are doing what they do – which is why some of us advocated blowing it up last year and starting over. The team is competing harder than I thought (look at my sig) and I am pleasantly surprised that we can do just that.
Lighten up, guys. It may get worse as the season drags on, and you need to prepare for disappointment. We are at .500, which is what a lot of us picked for the full year. Don’t be disappointed because we were in first – so was Tampa, and they ain’t beating the BoSux or Spanks. We are a 4th place team, and fighting hard. I see no one dogging it at all (the occasional space-out by our CA OF’s notwithstanding). Love it or leave it, gents.
I took the "under".
I'm not sure people are under the impression that rolling heads will fix anything...
...but they will make people feel there is some accountability for bad decisions, even if the person who’s head rolls is Walker.
and which decision is it that greg walker made for which he should get fired?
let’s fire nieves, too. and allen thomas. those guys should be held accountable for bad decisions, even if they don’t make any decisions.
4/29/08: the ginger ninja strikes again
yeah
it’s kind of interesting to read all these comments now about the team after reading all the comments in the offseason about the team. i guess that’s what the sox get for playing a few games over .500 for the first few weeks. which is why one shouldn’t get too interested in small sample sizes. like you say a streaky offensive team with a ridiculously thin bench that can’t afford more than one injury (and, in my view, we’ve already experienced that one with richar).
4/29/08: the ginger ninja strikes again
Hmmm...
So first, our offense was due to turn it around because of their unlucky BABIP. Now, they aren’t going to turn it around due to an injury that we learned about during Spring Training?
no, i'm serious
you often don’t understand the simplest posts. which part of that last sentence was difficult for you to grasp?
Jesus H. Larry! I said the first half!
stop looking at all sides, tracking trends, looking at historical performance.
take a stand, any stand, and dig in really deep.
Repeat after me: reading comprehension, even a little bit of thought before posting, and basic research are not signs of weakness.

richar update
And don’t expect second baseman Danny Richar to return soon. Because of the complication of Richar’s fractured left first rib, he is being brought along slower to ensure his recovery. Richar isn’t scheduled to play in an extended spring game or start a minor-league rehabilitation assignment until the third week of May.

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.
Might be time
To make a deal for a 2B like Brian Roberts if we actually are serious about competing.

And deal whom?
Poreda, Egbert, and the rest (lol) of the farm?

It's tough to think...
of a deal for Roberts that doesn’t involve Fields… Poreda + Shelby + Richar + Egbert is the best I could think, and that doesn’t seem a whole lot better than what the Cubs were offering (Gallagher + Murton + Cedeno + others, IIRC).
It’s not tough to imagine a scenario - at least for me - where the Sox linger around first-place through mid-June and decide to trade Fields for Roberts. That’s probably a deal that the Orioles would strongly consider, as Fields is better than just about anyone the Cubs could offer (unless the Cubs got crazy and offered Hill + Pie or something like that). I wouldn’t like it one bit, but that trade would give the Sox one helluvan offense for the rest of the year.
I don't think Fields gets Roberts
The O’s supposedly turned down Cedeno, Gallagher, Veal, and Ceda. The Sox simply don’t have the talent to match that package. Part of it is that the O’s need young starting pitching and a shortstop and the Sox don’t have that. Plus the O’s have a better 3B prospect in the minors than Fields (Billy Rowell).

I don't know much about Rowell
but he looks to be at least two-to-three years away. I’d also say Fields is better than anybody the Cubs have been willing to give up, although the package as a whole is probably better than just getting Fields. Veal has good stuff but not a whole lot of control. Gallagher is decent but IIRC, the O’s are stacked with those good-but-not-great, B-type prospects. Cedeno has a good minor-league track record but upwards of 700 major-leaugue at-bats of suck, and I don’t know much about Ceda.
Needless to say, if the Sox really wanted Roberts, I think they could go out and get him by overpaying. You don’t think a package like Fields, Richar and two of Egbert/Shelby/Poreda would get it done?
Well, who knows really, I'm just guessing
But the O’s have really targeted SS and SP as what they want. And I think MacPhail likely values Cubs prospects higher than Sox—he’ll certainly feel he’s better informed about them at the very least.
Plus you have to remember that Angelos quashed the Cubs deal. Who knows how much he wants for Roberts.
In your suggested package, I think Richar is unusable in his current state. I think Fields, Shelby, Egbert, Poreda won’t be enough given the position mismatch for the O’s needs and Angelos’ need for an absolute heist in order to give up Roberts. Which is fine with me since I wouldn’t want to see that happen.
Shouldn’t you be studying for finals?

Shouldn't I be? Of course I should...
but procrastinating on places like this site and DailyKos is much better than remembering formulas like debt-to-equity ratio, dividend yield ratio or book value per share. Or, if I’m ‘having too much fun’ with my accounting, reading about the post-Civil Rights era judiciary (for my American Poli Sci class with my uber-liberal, clearly-a-pot-smoker-during-his-time-in-college - and don’t get me wrong, I love every minute of his class - teacher). Or if I’m tired of that there’s the macro-economics.
I’ve also found it tough to actually put myself to study for a test when it’s more than 24 hours away—that’s probably the biggest issue here.
That's only fair...
I strongly suspect many final exams are written up by instructors in the final 24 hours before the test. If they don’t start getting ready before then, I don’t see why you should.
Best of luck :)

Trading for Roberts would be foolish...
even if Fields is not involved. I don’t think this team makes the playoffs even with Roberts at 2B and leading off. If we give up Fields in such a trade, we are forced to overpay Crede or some other bum free agent 3B. Also, Roberts would only be here for one more year in 2009 and we would be paying him $8 million dollars. Unless Roberts is coming here as a player / hitting coach to replace Walker, I don’t see him being worth it. I don’t believe that the rest of our team will instantly start hitting once we add an ex-juicer.
It really depends I think
If around mid june the pitching has still held up and the team is close, well as someone said a while ago, there is no point in half assing it if you are going for it. Roberts represents a massive upgrade at the 2B position. Personally I still want Richar to get a shot but it still sounds far away and of course is still a question mark.
