Of course...
the article neglects to mention how many votes he’s gotten, or whether it’s even close to enough to get him in.
I’m fine with him not making the team – one less thing for him to get hurt doing.

I don't think his june will be like his april & may
it will be better!
The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.
an even better june from q! and a white sox draft including smoak
will make wiz a happy guy.

Maybe the nickname should be
Q! Lightyear.
Pitching, defense and health.
is there a cash consideration for making the team?
for the right price, I can guarantee he makes it.

My personal "feel good" for the day...
“No one is as deserving this time around as Quentin, obviously. If you want to go head-to-head with the traditional vote-leading left fielder, his numbers (.296, 14 homers, 47 RBIs) are better across the board than those of Boston’s Manny Ramirez (.292, 9, 34). “

Guillen doesn’t seem worried about Quentin handling the pressures of the lineup’s third spot if he finds himself in the middle of a slump. “I don’t think Quentin even realizes what he’s doing—he just goes out there and hits,” Guillen said. “I don’t think this kid’s scared. Thome's not really having a bad season.
The only thing that’s really declined for him is BABIP, so he might see a bump upwards as the season progresses.
Konerko I’m not optimistic about.
by The Jerry Royster Experience on May 30, 2008 3:15 PM CDT up reply actions
he's down 200+ points in OPS
and more than 40 in OPS+ compared to the past 2 years. so while his current production isn’t bad as measured against the rest of the leauge, it’s a significant dropoff by his standards. and though i certainly expected his production to decline with age, i didn’t expect such a steep plunge.
Slow declines with age...
are actually fairly rare.
by The Jerry Royster Experience on May 30, 2008 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions
probably depends upon what one considers slow
one could argue that PK’s “true talent” 2006 season – especially his second half – was considerably less than his actual numbers considering his BABIP. controversial, i’m sure, but one could say with a straight face that his decline began that season, actually manifested itself last year, and continues on down the slope this year.

Ted Lilly = regression to the mean...
His line against the Rockies today—3.0 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 2 HR. However, the wind is really blowing out at Wrigley. Lilly’s ERA is now up to 5.54 on the season.
The Cubs are going to have one of the most pathetic playoffs rotations if Rich Hill doesn’t come back strong from AAA…
Zambrano - only true stud starter
Lilly - the N.L. could only make him look good for so long
Dempster - he will be the next to implode
Marquis - better hitter than pitcher
dempster
i get the feeling dempster will probably implode, too, but is there anything in his peripherals that says he’s been doing it with smoke and mirrors this year? i haven’t really looked at his number. i know he had 12 K’s recently, though, which seems like a good sign.
i haven't looked all that recently
but in the middle of this month he was amongst the lowest in babip. also, if you’re one of those who buys into the “look at runs allowed, not earned runs allowed” (which has some validity, in my opinion), he’s got quite a few unearned runs. so, yes.

Dempster...
He is getting by on an 85 – 90 MPH fastball and mostly breaking stuff like his slider. He has never had good control and hitters are helping him out a lot by swinging at shit from watching his starts. He also does this lame glove waggle during his delivery that must be somewhat distracting to batters. If Dempster is your second best starter in the postseason, you have problems. If the Indians fall further out of the playoff race, I could see the Cubs making a run at Captain Cheeseburger Fatbathia before the deadline.
that glove waggle is obnoxious
but, hey, whatever works.
also, i think “flabathia” would be a smoother weight-based name pun than “fatbathia,” if you’re going down that road.
He also has a significant
injury history as a starter. I could see him breaking down, especially since the is the first year he is back as a full-time starter in a few years.
I think there could be a fair amount of starters on the block come trade deadline time.

anybody the sox might be interested in
if they’re buyers? i’d love to see dunn on the south side but i doubt they’d trade for him unless thome, dye, or PK went down for the year and they thought they could resign him to replace thome next year.
and dunn
will only invite more bitching about low batting average and not enough singles.

I like Adam Dunn a lot.
He’s not aesthetically pleasing, but he gets the job done.
That said, I don’t think he’ll ever be on the White Sox.
by The Jerry Royster Experience on May 30, 2008 3:41 PM CDT up reply actions
probably not, but
i was doing some rough calculations the other day, and if you assume crede, ocab, uribe, ozuna, and thome are gone next year, and a reasonable (5-7%) increase in the payroll, the sox will have about $20 million to spend and only 2-3 spots on the 25-man roster. i doubt they’d throw most of it at one guy, though.
and yet oddly SSH has a thing for him

and it doesn't really make that much sense
to give dunn any more slack on a slump than thome. despite thome being old, he had a better ‘07 than dunn (150 OPS+ v. 136 OPS+, .312 EqA v. .305 EqA) and a much longer track record of sustained success as well.

Thome IS nearing retirement...
he has sucked in late innings, and he is bad against lefties. All true statements.
read the comments.
they aren’t “wow, thome is getting up there, he probably only has a good year or two left in him” comments. at least two of them are closer to “stick a fork in him right now” comments.
so when dunn slumps, does he suck? is he done? or is he just going through a rough patch? and if he’s just going through a rough patch, based on his entire career, even as recently as last season, maybe thome is too?

and thome, at 36, had a much better season than dunn, at 27,
in a year when the national league blew.
thome, at 36, matched his 17-year career OPS+ and EqA. after a bad april, you were already declaring him dead.

And players go downhill fast in their late 30's...
I can’t believe you are even arguing this.
No team in baseball would take Thome over Dunn at this point in their respective careers.
that was never the point.
the point was that were using dunn’s numbers as of today as a “what’s not to like.” well, two weeks ago he was in the shitter. did you like him then? or do you like him only when he’s hitting well?

earlier this week you declared he was a juicer based on his slump.

and kenny williams is a proven moron because he thought rowand would be better this year than andruw jones.
why all the absolutes?

Swisher has been awful this season...
I will feel a lot better about this team’s offense when he starts hitting like he is supposed to. Because I don’t expect guys like Crede and Pierzynski to keep hitting as well as they have.
fun with the search function.
at least it precludes people from claiming they didn’t post something that they absolutely did or that their posts are being misremembered.

Thome sure looked good tonight...
0 for 3 with a BB and 2 K’s. And a nice weak groundout against a lefty in late innings. He sure looks like the same hitter he was last year.
i can only imagine
what you thought of dunn on april 26 when another 0-3 day with 2 k’s left him hitting .192 with a .723 OPS.
by the way, how IS that rowand v. andruw jones battle shaping up?
may 1, 2008 quote of the day: "get owens on the field immediatly… swish can take quintens role…"
by Toonderstrook on May 31, 2008 2:50 AM CDT up reply actions
I know this is shocking but...
37 year olds don’t usually turn into better players, they decline. Meanwhile, 28 is still in a players “prime years”. But if you want to keep acting like a T-homer, go right ahead.
Both Rowand and Jones are around the same age and Rowand has put up a 108 career OPS+ while Jones has put up a 112 career OPS+. A lot of people probably thought that Jones would be better than Rowand this season. We didn’t expect him to show up to the Dodgers 30 pounds overweight. If he gets into shape, I would not be surprised if Jones outperforms Rowand next season, although park factors will probably come into play.
your resort
to cool, calm, and collected analysis re: jones and rowand is welcome.
but remember, jones had a terrible year last year and there were a lot of conditioning concerns then, too.
my question is this: is kenny williams still a complete moron b/c he thought rowand would be better this year than jones?

that's certainly true
but i think your batting average fetish contains in it the implicit criticism of players like thome or teams heavy with slugger-types, like the sox, who are prone to having low batting average, especially during slumps.

Steve Stone predicting
Sox select Gordon Beckham with eighth pick in draft ( or, at least, speculating.)
There's starting to be a consensus behind that name.
Which of course means that won’t be the guy the Sox take.

I've
never seen any of these guys…from what I read he may be the fastest to the big leagues….but this Brett Wallace the most sure-fire major league HITTER. The determining factor could be whether the Sox feel Beckham can be a competent major league shortstop….or will he have to be at another position.
When I read stuff
about Wallace, I immediately think Billy Butler.
